ok. came here for lunch w a friend and shared ramen and a big plate of sushi. i THOUGHT i was getting japanese ramen. NO. it was SHIN RAMEN - the ones that come in red packaging. that you get from H-mart. whole box of 20 of these would cost $12. i asked the owner if this was shin ramen or shin ramen black and she said, "well the noodle is shin ramen. but the base is pork base. noodle is shin but base is japanese pork base." FURIOUS, i asked her if she has ever tried shin ramen and she said, "no... but is it good?" This is the second time I eaten here and I just ate here today. Honestly this should be rated as the most customer service oriented sushi place in the area. They always greet you with a smile and it is very cozy here. We had a party of 8 today and we got a private area in the back that conveniently seats 8 people exactly. That is the largest size table they have. We first got water that they give everyone complimentary without asking then they asked for our drinks. I got some Dry cold sake. It is very good. Especially if you sip it with your sushi. Then I ordered the shrimp crunch roll and the philadelphia roll. 2 of my favorite rolls by the way. ;) The chopsticks are already part of the table layout for people once they grab their seats. Some of the other rolls ordered in my part were: yum yum rolls, kamikaze rolls and spicy tuna rolls. Those are all real good rolls. When I ended up getting my crunchy shrimp rolls, I wasn't impressed because the sushi was good as always. Im used to it. After eating that rolls, my philly roll cam next. Now this is what I call art. The sushi looked like it was part of a tree. They used sauce to draw a tree on the long plate and the sushi were supposed to be like the berries of the tree. It was very artistic I have never seen any restaurant do something like that. Everyone at my table was impressed by the skilled art. I felt bad destroying it and eating it but I was real hungry for sushi today. My friend got a cool face drawn on her plate with sauce too. 2 of the people got soups which smelled real good. Then what really surprised us is that they gave us a free complimentary banana cake roll. It looked like a long sushi roll but they were banana cake pieces. you could almost call it a banana cake roll. it was breaded on the outside and had warm banana vanilla inside with almonds and chocolate mocha sauce drizzled on top. We didn't order it, they gave it to us for free. I have never seen that either at restaurant. Free fancy dessert? Am I in heaven? Then they split our checks which we didn't have to ask for. They also repeat the order to make sure they got everything correct. They HATE making mistakes here. Then after we left the employees of the restaurant ALL thanked us and gave us a bow (Japanese style). They really treat the customer here like a king or queen. Took my family out for dinner to celebrate our 21st anniversary. So the minute we stepped in, you can tell that we got so ''profiled'' instantly. So right after we sat at the table and sat down, the server came and asked if we had reservations. What?!!! Huh?!!! By the way there were 5 empty tables at the time. And to make matters worst the server was holding off on our menu - The (Caucasian) folks that was sitting in front of us who came in 10 minutes after we came in got their menu before we did. Came here for dinner after moving into town and ordered probably $100 worth of sushi between two people. The sushi tasted a little off. I ate maybe one piece of everything we got and couldn't eat any more of it. I usually lean towards more of the raw stuff at better establishments, and the cooked stuff at places where the fish does not taste as fresh. The cooked rolls were alright here. My favorite place for sushi in the burbs would be Chef Soon in Woodridge (some of the best sushi I've ever had), and favorite budget option would be JuRin in Elgin (good cooked rolls). When we moved out of Evanston, our first concern was finding a good sushi place near Des Plaines. Much to our surprise, Dotombori was within walking distance to the new digs. We were concerned, as downtown Des Plaines is not know for their great restaurants. In any case, we gave it a try, and I'm glad we did. First, my son and I love sitting near the sushi prep area. One thing that sells me every time is whether or not my son is treated as a regular customer and not some annoying kid. Gladly, the sushi chef immediately acknowledged my son's knowledge of the fish and other things in the cold case. For a seven year old, I've created a sushi monster. We had both shared a number of rolls and nigiri while we dined. Everything was fresh and flavorful. It didn't take long for my son to see the "flaming" choice on the menu, and we had to order it. It's called the "Oh My God" roll and boy did it deliver. We order two every time we go. We had their banana dessert and was very pleased. We haven't been here in a while due to our crazy schedules, but it's not like we don't want to. I'm in need of a Dotombori fix extremely soon. read more

When it comes to Sushi this place is incredible, especially during happy hour. My friends and I like to go there during happy hour as the prices are high outside of happy hour. They have all your favorite rolls and they are made fresh to order. They have a large selection of drinks and their menu is quite large, unless you want dessert then it is very very small and they usually don't have all of them available. This being said they do not have a lot of tables or room to fit a large group of people so make sure your group doesn't exceed 4 people. read more

Love this place! The sushi tastes fresh (my fav is crazy boy and dragon) and the Bento Box makes a lovely dinner. The staff is very friendly, seems like it's owned by a family and I love supporting establishments like this. The Bento box comes with salad, soup, your choice of entree, tempura and sushi. It's the perfect amount of food and a great variety. I've also tried the noodle dishes here and they are made perfect. I reiterate everything tastes really fresh and the atmosphere is very quaint and friendly. It's not a huge restaurant but i've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a table. I'm megapicky about Japanese food. This could be my new favorite. The lunch bento box was perfection, wall to wall. Tempura was flawless. Chicken teriyaki was char-grilled, and easily the best ever. The California roll was perfect. Even the rice had an extra something. Didn't care for the loud techno music, though. I love downtown Des Plaines. This sushi place is great, and has a little something extra with the flaming rolls. There's three different types of specialty rolls that will come out on a rectangular plate with black rocks. A sushi roll is folded in aluminum foil and sitting on top, like a small mountain and has a fire blazing around it. The rest of the rolls are great- and it's one of the few places around the suburbs that has relatively fresh tuna. The salmon has always been fantastic, and the sauces are spot-on. This was actually my second visit and I had meant to review it the first time and forgot. The food here is delicious and the people couldn't be nicer. After our meal they gave us all dessert on the house. The only complaint I have is that the service is extremely slow, so if you have plans to go somewhere after dinner you may want to give yourself more time. I don't remember it being so slow the first time so maybe it was just an off night? Anyway, I will definitely be back-slow service or not. The lunch specials are not varied, and they seem to have a penchant for using crab stick in most of their lunch specials, but you can always request them not to put any. On a sunny afternoon, I walked into the poorly lit sushi bar. I ordered an Asian peartini. It took 20 minutes for me to get my drink. My waiter was unfamiliar with one of the drinks on the menu, and didn't both to ask for clarification. He was friendly but inefficient. A different waitress had to help him pick up the slack. Overall, the service was slow. The lady behind me got and ate her food before I got mine. The decor was cute, I suppose. I ordered what I thought was a spicy tuna roll with 5 pieces of chef's choice Nigiri. I checked twice with the waiter to make sure it was Nigiri. What I got was the spicy salmon roll with sashimi. I checked with another waitress who said I got the right thing, but I'm relatively certain that it was wrong. Sashimi has no rice, I got the sushi that the waiter told me was nigiri. The sashimi I got was tuna, salmon, and some type of white fish. Fresh, thick pieces but the white fish was a little funky. The spicy salmon roll was a hint of spicy, but not bold. Too much rice. Overall, it was an okay experience. Not mind-blowing, but not terrible. Mediocre. It took me an hour to get 2 drinks, and the lunch special. Not good if you're in a rush. Fortunately, I had an hour to kill before my car appointment. read more

Service is tremendous, food is fresh, parking is easy. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is that they do not have the number of 'specialty' rolls that other less traditional sushi places have. That said the viking roll was terrific. Miso soup had quite a bit of seaweed in it, we like a bit less. The monk fish liver (cooked) was excellent, think pate with hints of the sea. Oysters were VERY fresh. We also tried a beef bowl, while we still prefer the beef bowl at Bowl House (rolling meadows), the fact that Bowl House moved further away from us makes them no longer viable. We are so happy to have some more ethic choices (something other than Mexican) here in Des Plaines !! read more

If you have to choose the between the Asian restaurants on Miner Street in downtown Des Plaines (there's the Vietnamese place, the Thai place, the the Japanese place), I'd definitely choose Dotombori above the others. Tonight a friend and I arrived a little after 5pm, and took advantage of the Happy Hour specials that are available between 5 and 6, Mon-Thurs. I got 8 salmon rolls ($5), a plate of fried dumplings ($3), fried tofu ($3), and a miso soup ($1.50) and had plenty left over. The presentation was very nice; the plates and bowls were classy, and the food was plated elegantly. The sauces were very tasty and the food was very fresh. The staff was also friendly. The chef behind the counter made us a swan out of an apple, which was a great touch on an already fantastic dinner experience. Des Plaines has a few nice restaurants to eat at and plenty that are middle of the road. If you ever find yourself in the area, do yourself a favor and eat at Dotombori and skip on Leona's. read more

*I'm going to preface this by saying most people aren't going to know differences between Japanese and other Asian foods and might not realize they aren't eating authentic-style Japanese food at this restaurant* "Misrepresentation" is how I would describe my experience at this restaurant. We ordered ramen expecting to get Japanese style ramen as this is a Japanese restaurant and we were craving that flavor. Unfortunately the restaurant serves Korean-instant ramen with some diced up vegetables added. I know this because I've lived in Korea and had plenty of ramen there as well as visiting Japan. $9 for this is ramen is outrageous. The staff all speak Korean and many of the items on the menu are Korean - Bulgogi, Soju, the above mentioned ramen. Service was very basic, our server wasn't able to make recommendations on the menu - "everything is popular/good". We didn't try the sushi so I can't comment on that, but it might be the only Japanese part of the restaurant as far as my experience goes. read more

I really enjoy going to Dotombori. The staff is polite and always willing to make any accommodation you may need food-wise. They are super fast and when they promise a time for pick up, it is always ready. The food is fresh and the restaurant is clean, along with a hospitable staff this place makes a very great place to go on a date or go with a group. I have eaten here twice now and can say that I really like this place. Both times I was with my kids and parents and both times we had a very nice time. The service was very friendly and attentive and the food was really good. We especially love getting the specialty rolls that come to the table flaming! We come at happy hour (5-6 p.m.) and the prices on certain things are reduced. The dinners come with soup and salad and the portions are pretty large so I usually split a dinner with one of my kids and have more room for sushi! read more

There was only 1 other table with a couple people there. It took 20 minutes for the waitress to take our order. I asked for a take out container immediately upon getting our food, since I knew I would not have enough time to eat it. Tip for the owners and wait staff...Learn to make eye contact with your customers when you are walking around to see if they are trying to get your attention. Most people that come in for lunch during the week are on a schedule with allotted time for their lunch break...you could potentially lose business at a prime time if more attention is not paid to your customers and their busy schedules. I would advise anyone on a time constraint to tell them you are in a hurry the second you walk in the door. read more
