I came here after hearing folks on my FB feed raving about the place. Underwhelmed about sums it up. I had the chicken fried rice and chicken skewers and he had the mac and cheese. The chicken fried rice was very flavorful but the chunks of chicken looked and tasted...off. The rice was also excessively greasy. The chicken skewers are lightly fried (I thought they would be grilled) and were literally smothered in a peanut sauce. The nuttiness of the sauce overwhelmed the chicken and was overly copious. He had the mac and cheese which was made with a wide flat rice noodle. I could not discern a cheese flavor at all in the dish save for the shredded mound that topped the noodles. After a while, the entree retired into an inedible and unappetizing congealed mass. We ordered a cocktail that was supposed to be presented in a pineapple but they had run out of pineapple. In short, the beverage was very watered down and overly icy. Service was mediocre as well. Our waitperson did not check on us to ask us how we liked the food even though it was evident nothing was being consumed. I wanted to try the famous cube toast but I could not bring myself to spend additional money given our decidedly lackluster meal. If you are on the fence about coming here, DO NOT. Will the food at Double Chin give me a double chin? The food at double chin is creative, delicious and sinful... it will definitely contribute to you having a double chin, but that is ok. We came here during the weekend, and it got quite packed by 8pm. The drinks are very creative here, you can get a drink in an actual fish tank, or soju in a watermelon. We decided to get a huge mojito which was meant for 3 people, but really, it was just nice for 2 people. The menu here has some Hong Kong influence, but with a creative twist. We started off with the spam and taro fries. This was my first time having spam... and it wasn't that bad. I don't know what kind of crap it is made out of- probably some chicken lips, pig butt, cow tail etc but it was quite salty and tasted fine. Those fries came in a spam container, so it was absolutely instream worthy. It also came with spicy mayo which was perfect for dipping your fries in. We also had the scallion pancake chin wich- a sandwich with char siew inside, but sandwiched between scallion pancake instead of bread. It was ok, it didn't blow my mind, but hey, its different. We also had the kung pao chicken which was good. Well, here comes the grand finale... the desert! You have to save space for desert. I wanted to have to have the shaved ice and the cube toast but it was not possible to have both so I opted for the "berry healthy" cube toast. It came with 3 scoops of strawberry ice cream, chocolate and strawberry pocky, all inside a huge slab of fried bread. The plate was also decorated with frosties. This was once again, very Instagram worthy. The desert was delicious- you absolutely have to try the cubed toast! I would come back just to eat desert. The service started deteriorating once it got crowded, I don't think they have enough servers there. My friend introduced me to this place a few months ago and I immediately fell in love with it. It's definitely more towards Asian Fusion than HK style. Usually go here on the weeknights but on the weekends it is open until 4am which is great and super convenient. One downside is that the lights are super dim in the restaurant during the weekend nights. Highly recommend the HK style milk tea. It's more on the bitter side so if you have a sweet tooth, I would try something else. The Chinwiches are awesome but a bit on the oily side as with their other sandwiches. Tried Portuguese chicken rice for a change and was pleasantly surprised because it looks intimidating on the menu - great for cheese lovers. It's packed with a lot of chicken and I thought some pieces were chewy but overall a good dish. Price and portion size are great for almost all dishes. Service is great. Food came out within five minutes of ordering even though we went during a busy time. Waiter was super nice and accommodating. Their bathroom is definitely cool and unique - they post pictures of different food dishes on the bathroom stall walls. Makes for a pleasant relief I guess. read more

Didn't order food myself but the watermelon soju is so good! It says that it's for 3 people but it took 6 of us to finish it. It was sweet and you can taste the watermelon and lychee. Afterwards you can take out chunks of watermelon as well. The place gets packed sometimes but the wait is pretty short. This place should be embarrassed. I ordered their sweet and sour chicken today, but that's not what I ate. I ate straight up sweet and sour breading. I had to double check that I actually ordered chicken before I wrote this review because I don't think I had a single piece of chicken in my meal. And yes. That picture is not photoshopped. Their sauce is actually bright pink. But I will give credit by saying their sauce didn't really taste as artificial as it looks and the veggies were rather fresh, especially for Chinatown. I'll give them a star for their atmosphere as it is rather clean and well-kept and the server was nice. But in terms of food...laughable at best. What i liked about it: You have some creative comfort foods that have a bit of asian fusion elements, but done well. No over imagination, and you definitely see the evolution from what you might see from a HK restaurant. That day we got the cola wings, if you're into that kind of quirkiness of sweet and salty, definitely worth a try. Basically savory wings w/ what tastes like a light coat of cola dressing. Well first off, I don't think people should rate them too hard because it is a new restaurant and they are just starting to figure out the ways of running. They have a lot of improvements but that comes with time. They do have potential though! The wait does take a little while, and it is kind of hard to sometimes get the servers attention, but they are all very nice and polite. For appetizer I had the spam fries, Mac n cheese, and the chicken skewers. The spam fries are my favorite, but the spam fry is very salty so I suggest eating it with the taro fry at the same time. Mac n cheese was very different and kind of weird at first, but after awhile you get use to it, but I think you just have to get use to the fact that you're eating mac n cheese with flat noodles. If you get the chicken skewers ask for less peanut sauce, it's very thick and can glue your mouth together. For food I had noodles (I forgot what it was called), and then chinwich, which taste like a Banh mi in a scallion pancake! Dessert I had the matcha ma call it, it was soo good. It is very filling and definitely Instagram worthy. If you come, place your drink order first!! It takes awhile for it to come out, the Hong Kong style milk tea was very good. The place is small, so if you were hoping to come with a large party you should probably call ahead of time. But the place is very cute, bright colors and a happy atmosphere. I came the first time with some friends for savory food and the second one for their desserts. We ordered the Cola Wings, Portuguese Rice and Ramen. Overall, compared to the other restaurants in Chinatown, the food was pretty standard but a tad overpriced. Their cube toast--we got the Matcha ma callit, is absolutely incredible for $13. Significant better than the $7 cube toast from Café Bene. The warm toast with the cold ice cream is so delicious with fresh fruit, crunchy corn flakes and mochi (wasn't chewy enough though). They're also the only place as far as I'm aware of that serves warm Horlicks in Chinatown. The only other place would be Dong Khanh, but they're usually out half the time :(( Anyways, Double Chin is the perfect place to come hang out with some friends and split dessert and have a few warm drinks-- it's more of a café than a sit down restaurant I'd say. If you want a quick bite or dessert, this is the place to go but if you want to have a full meal, I would walk around Chinatown and eat food anywhere else for bigger portions and a better price. read more

A very interesting and inventive restaurant but the execution is so poor. I went in the evening after people should have been coming in from work - it's right in a busy section of the city. It was really empty. The smell as well as flies were witnessed by me and made me really nervous to eat anything. The hostess was clearly bored to death and the only guests were friends of servers sitting idly at tables. The food is so colorful and it's been really well publicized and hyped up, which is partially one of the problems here, because it falls short. I got the french toast cube (do it for the Insta) and it tasted fine. It was fried and din't have much taste in and of itself, but the fruit and ice cream inside were good. But that doesn't really justify the meal as a package. The menu is also really confusing and WAY too big. No restaurant needs that many dishes. Focus on halving it and doing those dishes well - it would still be a ton compared to what I saw. I think the owner needs a new, clean location and to invest more time into the business to really match the hype. read more

We got the Hawaiian fried rice, beef chow fun/ gravy, salt and pepper calamari, curry fish balls, poutine, salt and pepper wings, and chicken skewers, with berry healthy cube toast and I want my baby bao as desserts. The curry fish was a little bland. The two just don't go well together. The aroma is good but there's barely any taste to it. The beef chow fun does not have any flavor in comparison to the other dishes. Everything else is good. The poutine is not spicy at all even though it was topped off with sriracha and kimichi but enjoyable nonetheless. My favorites were the fried rice, calamari, wings, and the dessert. I definitely would recommend it but maybe substitute the wings for cola wings and the dessert with the matcha ma call it since they ran out when we went. The dessert here is worth a try. I recommend the cube toast over the baby bao since it just wasn't what I was expecting. It was still good but it was very lightly sweetened which I don't mind since we dipped it in matcha sauce anyway. The service is awesome here! Super polite staff and they were very considerate of our party and it made the stay so much more enjoyable overall. I have like triple, if not, quadruple chins now. But it was worth it. read more

I went here with my parents and a friend after seeing a picture of some of their desserts online. After looking through the dessert options, we decided to go with the muddy madness. Was this dessert picture worthy? Yes. Was it something I will be going back for again? Probably not. As some other people have mentioned, the dessert is very toast heavy and lacks a lot of extra ingredients. I would love to have had a little less toast and another scoop of ice cream on top. Also, it looks like from previous photos, that there were more varieties of fruits with it, but we only had a couple of bananas, blueberries, and some canned peaches. My friends and I ordered the curry fish balls and waffle kimchi fries, as well as beef chow fun. To be honest, I had higher expectations and was slightly disappointed. The dishes tasted like food at any other asian restaurant, but slightly pricier. Dessert: we ordered the Matcha Ma Call It, which we all devoured - I recommend this if you come to Double Chin! The food on Double Chin's menu is very much like what I grew up eating with that HK, canto influence on American. The flavors are great here. We stopped in for dinner on a Saturday night. The wait was significantly shorter than many other places in the neighborhood. We ordered the rice noodles with pork and shrimp, two kinds of popcorn chicken, and fries with peking duck on top. We loved the chicken with sriracha on it, and the noodles were amazing. They also have beer and some fishbowl drinks with gummy sharks in them. Service was a little slow, but we were not in a rush. The food is worth the wait! Although the decor is not much, and I was put off by the smell of a heavily scented candle when we walked in, the food is amazing and worth a visit. Came here for some snacks and drinks while exploring Chinatown. We got the lobster Rangoon, an ice cream macaroon sandwich and 4 Capri-funs. The Arnold Palmer Capri fun was by far the favorite of the table. The strawberry one was good, but just had a weird taste to it. Would have given 5 stars, but our service was pretty slow. This place is amazing! All the menu options are so creative and so reasonably priced. I ordered the skillet Mac and cheese, which was actually made with rice noodles, and my less adventurous friend ordered a classic Kung pao chicken. The portions were quite large for what we payed. This restaurant is actually relatively cheap. Most importantly, the food was delicious! Especially the mac and cheese; the combination of a classic southern soul food with traditional rice noodles was surprisingly delightful. We ordered a mango snow ice with mochi and boba for dessert. I got the tomato pork chop rice and my boyfriend got the Tom yum seafood udon soup. We also got a Hong Kong style milk tea to share. First, the tomato pork chop rice was very disappointing. The dish was distastefully sweet. I was mint able to finish it because of how sweet it was. The overall dish looked really good and appealing, however, the taste was not good. It was simply too sweet and not savory whatsoever. Second, the Tom yum seafood udon soup was very spicy. It spiciness was overpowering and it was hard to taste the flavor of the meal. Delicious, creative, and such a refreshing take on "Asian Fusion" -- which is usually an outsider spin in Asian food. Conversely, the Double Chin method seems to be the Asian take on Western food. Their chow fun Mac n Cheese is incredible as is their char siu skillet hash. Desserts are really unique as well and the drinks are dangerous in that they barely taste of alcohol yet pack a punch. I went there once a week over the summer but have had to dial it back since eating Donut ice cream sandwiches all the time makes it increasingly harder to button ones pants. Great food here. I know some of the reviews noted poor service, but I got seated almost immediately. The minute or two that I waited, I sat on the neat swing that they have (Yes, a swing). I went with one friend and we got scallion pancakes as an app. Lots of pieces. The pancakes could use a little more flavor but it's made up for with the special dipping sauce that comes with it. She got beef chow fun with gravy and I got Portuguese chicken rice. Both were quite large dishes and both very yummy. I could only finish about half of mine. It's about $12 for the rice dish, but considering how much food you get. Definitely worth it. Was here for the desserts, and was not disappointed! The waitress was super nice and friendly with my group of 8 people (I think her name was Mitchie!). We had the toast dessert and some boba drinks, which were promptly served and the waitress was able to describe each item on the menu in full detail. My friends and I were able to gauge how much we could take in (we had fried chicken beforehand) based on what she said, and in the end, it was all perfect servings. The milk tea was super good, along with the regular teas. I believe we had some matcha toast dessert, which was super pretty to take pictures of along with being delicious! Double chin is a hip cool place to take your friends late at night if you're visiting boston. The negatives is mainly the taste but the hype and presentation of the food over power that. I got the berry happy cube toast and shared it with 2 other people. The serving is huge and it's definitely a great thing to instagram. The actual taste is very sub par. The toast is way too saturated with egg, it was to the point where instead of french toast it tasted like cinnamon scrambled egg toast, It was just way too thick on the egg and hard to eat. My sister and boyfriend didn't really like it and i took the responsibility of eating most of it and risking getting an actual double chin lol. Updating my review. I decided to come here for a friend's fundraiser after work. I was shocked that Double Chin opens until 4AM on a Thursday because I thought it was only Fridays and Saturdays. Anyways, decided to give this place a try again after a year and I'm happy I did! I was pretty hungry after work so I bought myself the basic chicken fried rice and the Hong Kong milk tea. I've been trying to find a place in Boston that sells Hong Kong milk tea because I've been missing and craving it every time I leave home, which is LA. I was so happy that I finally found a place that sells Hong Kong milk tea and that is reasonably priced. The Hong Kong milk tea from here definitely satisfied my craving and I was trying to savor every sip of it before getting home. When I finally got home, I could finally eat my dinner! In my opinion, I feel like it was a pretty small portion because my fried rice wasn't even close to be filled to the top. Kind of disappointing, but that didn't stop me from eating it! The flavors were all there. Nice portion of REAL chicken, not some BS cheap chicken you usually get. There were a fair amount of eggs and peas spread through. Overall, even though I took everything to go, I definitely want to come back here for another shot! I want to try other things since Double Chin has won me back with the milk tea and the food. Although there is still that stench there, it is not as strong as last year. I've been intrigued with this place ever since I saw it in Chinatown. My wife and I tried it tonight and we were both thoroughly disappointed. She got the ramen stir fry with chicken with extra spice. It's served in a fun way with the ramen bowl right on the plate, and everything had a pleasant texture. But that's where the good things to say end; there was very little taste, and no spiciness that we could taste. I got a half roast duck, and it tasted reasonably well, but I've definitely had better in town, both in and out of Chinatown. My wife picked a piece, put it in her mouth, and immediately frowned, exclaiming how salty it was. My pieces tasted fine, so I took a little from her piece, and yikes, it tasted like licking a patch of pure salt. Looks like the salt was very inconsistently applied, to the point of kind of killing the appetite after tasting that much salt. The salt and pepper smelt was the high point of the meal, although it still wasn't particularly flavorful. Alas, it came out after the ramen, and at the same as the duck, so it wasn't quite an appetizer. On the other hand, the ramen came out really fast. Given the wide number of delicious flavors in Chinatown, I'd skip this and go to pretty much any other place. We ordered the Hong Kong style milk tea, scallion pancake, salt & pepper calamari, beef chow fun with gravy and Cha siu crispy noodle. The Palmdale and calamari were the best of what we ordered. The noodles were so so. The beef chow fun was a tad bland while the Cha siu crispy noodle was a bit too salty. The calamari was perfectly seasoned and fried. The scallion pancake was also pretty good. Not sure what the shipping sauce was but it tasted pretty good with the pancake. The milk tea was pretty good. My sister lines hers not to sweet while I like mine really sweet so it was perfect that it wasn't too sweet and had sugar available. I do plan on coming back to try their wings and desserts.
