I was impressed by the burger quality and the milkshakes, but I think that's due to the quality of the products: niman ranch natural beef and delicious mitchell's ice cream. otherwise, the salad was bitter and came as if we were eating it to go, complete with dressing and packet of "parmesan" we had to toss in ourselves in the plastic container. I finally got off my ass and got to Double Decker to do my job of consuming their burger and sharing my experience with you guys. It's a strange little space connected to a Day's Inn Motel on Grove between the Opera House and The Western Addition. I normally don't trust restaurants that cover walls and windows with photo's of their food, but this joint looked like they posted their own pictures and they are authentic. A cool young Asian dude took my order and he's like in your face the second you enter the doorway. I thought it was really tiny until he told me I could wait for my food upstairs, but I chose a table out front on the street instead. I usually opt for a restaurants signature menu item so here I ordered the Double Decker, a soda and fries and outside I went where I waited about five or ten minutes for my grub. There was a steady stream of customers coming in and leaving, so food was always being cooked but there was no frantic feeling. I was happily surprised when the guy who took my order appeared with two red plastic baskets containing my delicious looking burger 1st and my fries 2nd. The burger consisted of two patties, one draped with melted swiss, the other with melted cheddar, cooked to perfection resting on a toasted sesame bun. A wide swath of mayo covered the bottom under the meat, and there were pickles, tomato, onion and lettuce on the side. The fries were obviously house cut rather than frozen and had the added pleasure and taste of being twice cooked or pre-blanched which adds depth and richness to the fries, delicious! My first bite into this thick and gorgeous burger was heavenly, hot juices, good meat, melted cheeses and a toasted bun are beautiful things when put together like this. I didn't give this place a 5th star because there was a lingering taste that just didn't match all the other great attributes of the place, but I have no idea if that was me on a bad day or something in one of the ingredients. But I give this place high marks for quality, cleanliness, pricing and presentation, and I'll go back soon and double check that taste question. We placed an office order through Eat24. The food was delivered promptly, but my sandwich was so burnt it was not edible. I called the restaurant to see if they could remake the sandwich and was told that they toast the buns the same way. The guy couldn't believe my sandwich was burnt. He finally said that I'm not their customer that I'm eat24's customer so go through them to get a refund for the sandwich. I hadn't seen or heard of any good wings in the city until I came here before a March Madness basketball game. The wings are pretty good although could use a little bit more meat. The flavor is spot on though and apparently the hotter the better. I've seen a guy in there sweating with three Sprite cans in front of him housing a basket of wings. The burgers are really good - I can't believe people opt for Flipper's around the corner over these patties. I've had a basic cheeseburger which was really tasty and cooked perfectly. Undoubtedly the best wings place in SF. I treat myself once every month with a dozen of the "inferno" wings dipped in some extra inferno buffalo sauce and believe me, they are awesome!!!.... Inferno wings, fries and beer, what else do you want?? I like it super hot and spicy and so I always get the inferno one. But they have mild and hot ones as well and they are as good as they can get. Among the more affordable places in Hayes Valley. No frills, kinda old school burger diner, think truck stop-ish after a long haul. A little hideaway of the neighborhood if just want to get some good old fashioned eats without the bother of pretense and fluff. Happy hour has a couple beer selections: macrobrews, but inexpensive and good enough. I tend to have the buffalo chicken burger which is mildly spicy (can ask to turn up the heat though), generous size of chicken breast and topped with fresh veggies. The bun is toasted perfectly and adds a yummy crunch. There are two floors for seating with all condiments. Only qualm is that the seat benches feel a bit on the sticky side. I ordered delivery from them - $15 minimum, which is understandable. The prices were fairly reasonable, kinda. The burgers are $7-9 and the sides are $2 (no, burgers don't come with fries. Congrats Dirty Decker, you get my first 1star review. I ordered food to go so I took a seat down inside with a partial view of the kitchen. I knew I was in for a treat when I saw a bag of frozen Kirkland Turkey burgers sitting on the counter. My excitement built when I saw the cashier repeatedly fingering burgers in the kitchen to check if the toppings were correct. Did I mention he didn't once wash his hands in the 30 minutes I was there. Things got more exciting when I watched the guy making my milkshake blow his nose repeatedly, no hand washing attempted. The fun continued as I watched incorrect orders get sent back to the kitchen where the cook scraped toppings off the burger only to regrill the patty, re-top with new condiments and send back to unsuspecting guests. All things aside, I still held hope for a tasty burger. Nope. Fool. A frozen over cooked patty tastes like a frozen over cooked patty. $30 for the worst burgers I've had in a long time. Burgers and wings are awesome here. I love spice and the wings have some major kick to them. I usually get "hot" when ordering wings but at DD I get "mild" and are still full of spice. The bacon cheese burger is excellent. They have some great HH specials are well as all you can eat wings on Wednesday nights. If you are craving for some hot wings, this is a great place to go. I've only gotten takeout on the buffalo wings and garlic fries so I can't speak to the burgers, but I've always been happy with the wings - especially for the price. They have happy hour on the weekdays where you can get half-priced wings, which is a great deal. Well well I had dinner here last night and yes it has taken me til today to think of how to describe my visit. We had a all cousin dinner and all 19 of us took up the upstairs of the restaurant. It was very clean as we had 6 kids with us. On to the food. Since there was so many of us we were able to order burgers, wings and several sides. Since I wanted to try both the burger and the chicken buger I shared with my cousin (I know which one..well one of them that was there) and my sister. The California Burger...very tasty (they use NIman Ranch beef) and just the way I like it. With melted swiss and creamy avocado. I definitely didn't have to add anything else to it ie. ketchup. The California Chicken....i know same thing as the regular burger. Hey I gotta give myself an opportunity to come back to try the other burgers here. The chicken was very good and juicy. Most places with chicken burgers they usually come out dry but definitely not here. Definitely a must if you are a white meat lover. Hmmm..now the wings or the sides. Let's go with the sides..I would need more time to think of how to describe the wings. The garlic fries were really good...there was garlic bits all over the top. Definitely don't eat this if you are planning on kissing anyone after. The chips very also very good. The kids were definitely fighting for this. We will definitely order 3 and not 2 the next time. Now the onions rings were also another good side to have. Yes they look exactly the way they are in the picture. The batter was perfect and fried to perfection. There was a little spiciness but definitely a good choice if the hot is too hot. Then 3 of us crazy ones decided to try the inferno since one of my cousins had previously tried it. After half of a wing he couldn't talk. So what I did was i licked it first and my whole mouth was burning. Then I took a bite and I was on fire. Chugging my Hef I just jammed the rest of the wing in my mouth and lived with the burning and drank the rest of my beer. I think my tummy ached after from the inferno wing. I will definitely come back again for the hot and mild wing but don't know if I am brave enough to eat the inferno one again. Definitely a great wing and burger joint and another plus they deliver. New burger joint just half a block from my place of business- I ordered their Western Burger & some (homemade) chips- the chips were pretty good, considering it's really the first time I've ever found a place that make their own, rather than relying on the fat-filled Frito-Lay monopoly- They are getting better at making these as days go by, and the hot sauce that comes on your wings makes a nice dip for the chips as well. The burger itself was a tad smaller than the burgers round the corner at Flippers, but as the last time I went to Flippers is gonna be the last time I EVER eat there (thanks to the 2 cockroaches in my breakfast platter!)- this place actually beats out Flippers for Price. What sells at Flipper for 10 bucks you can get here for 6. And I think they actually do a better job of grilling the meat, tho the burger is not quite so thick and wide as Flipper's, & there's no acoutrement of salad on your plate- but - (big but) for no frills, this was not bad. The burger had all that (ALL the fixings) on it. And no roaches either! The salads are good but they ought to give you a larger container of dressing- somehow there's just not enough to really get the greens all wet, since they load it up with a good healthy dose of them... Their real problem is space. Not a lot of it considering the amount of business they are getting at the lunch hour, which means a longer wait if you are upstairs, perhaps, but then it's interesting eating there- just a little cramped I would say. It's very reasonably priced, pretty simple burgers and wings menu, and comes out quick... not to mention they use nothing but fresh ingredients. The lettuce on my burgers have always had the crunch i'm looking for. Who would've thought Chips would go so well with Burgers and wings, and they've made on site too. lightly salted and fried to perfection. On tap beer, Happy hour on the Buffalo Wings, they've got tasty, simple and quick down perfectly. It's a very small place, and the upstairs area kinda gives it a cozy feel when you have an assortment of people in there. The only gripe i'd give to this place is the service can be sketchy now and then. They're wings are high priced like most places nowadays so I figured those might be good, but no it's bbq sauce on chicken bones no meat like why would you even offer these I'd be embarrassed to sell them. This place is pretty dang good!! I ordered the california chicken burger (comes with swiss cheese and avocado) and large garlic fries. My friend that the chicken wings which I tried and were pretty good. I felt like they were a little too wet and there was a huge puddle of grease on the bottom of the basket but hey when is there not a big puddle of grease on the bottom of a basket of chicken wings. Also the wings were juicy and cooked well inside. A lot of times chicken wings have this greasy dried up stale taste. Also my burger was cooked to perfect! and the fries were DELICIOUS!! they give you fresh tangy garlic. The only complaint I can make is that I felt the prices were too much. I want to start this review by making an important distinction. There are, in my mind, two kinds of burger. On one hand, you have the homestyle burger like your mom used to make - an inch thick, maybe grilled on the barbecue. This is a delicious kind of burger, like the kind you get at Zeitgest or Bender's. On the other hand, there is the old-fashioned hamburger stand kind of burger, ala In-N-Out, delicious, but in an entirely different way. Double Decker is of the second sort, and it is magnificent. To risk heresy, it's better than In-N-Out. Greasy, American Cheese, onions in the meat. And the fries are great too. And the building is a throwback. I mean, it's in the Days Inn in Hayes Valley. Yeah, no. Paid $22 for the double decker burger and a large cobb salad through a delivery site. When it arrived, the salad was rather small, didn't come with bacon, and the burger didn't come with fries. How do you justify charging $9.50 for a burger with NO FRIES?! Called them up to ask for my money back and was met with the same rude service that I'm now seeing on many other reviews here. No compensation given, no apologies made, and no more orders from me. If you want a burger worth $9.50, there are plenty of other places serving them WITH fries and under that cost. This is not one of them. read more
