I went here for the second time to pick up food because my first experience was pretty good. That first time, I got the spicy fried chicken sandwich. It was juicy and well balanced with slaw. But this time I was really disappointed. I got the non spicy version this time, and the chicken was gross. Super stringy, woody, and overcooked. And when I say stringy, I mean it was so stringy that the first bite stretched a piece like a one foot elastic band and snapped back spewing food all over the place. I'm not even exaggerating. Bland as well. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined lol. If I was dining in I probably would've asked them to remake it. I actually wanted to dine in today, but I decided to order to go because the inside is super dark and dreary feeling, with shitty music being blasted at you. I had a pretty good experience at this place. I was here on a Sunday at 12noon and [[HIGHLIGHT]]there was plenty of seating available throughout the restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I had the salad and added a "half" order of chicken- the half order is very small...three medium pieces of chicken topping the salad. I also tried the chicken biscuit, which was just okay...the chicken was decent, but the biscuit was dry and crumbly and didn't hold up well to the everything inside the sandwich. The Bird is a solid go-to chain spot with two convenient SF locations in SoMa and Hayes Valley, and I love their partnership with Super Duper since it means you can mix and match from either menu anywhere they operate. The bun strikes just the right thickness (I hate when the bread to filling ratio is way off in either direction) as it is sturdy enough to hold everything together without falling apart mid-bite. I'd love if they cranked up the spice a notch, but that's obviously specific to the individual. On my latest visit, I also tried the lemon pepper chicken tenders, which were a letdown and would not recommend. They had basically no seasoning (zero lemon pepper flavor but also barely any salt or pepper) and were also a bit over fried. The curly fries and tots are standard issue, nothing fancy but the mango habanero sauce was just weird as it was oddly not sweet or spicy, with an unpleasant vinegar-like consistency that I tried once and never went back for. Otherwise, it's not really worth getting. ------ Used to eat at the Bird as a regular back when they first opened in Berkeley. Those were the days when it used to be spicy, crispy, crunchy, seasoned extremely well, and fresh. Nowadays, not so much -- more like soggy, cold, and bland. It's one of the few times where I felt like the food's cost and calories was not worth it. However, they were able to remake the burger that everyone should receive by just flash frying and re-seasoning the patty. So make sure to ask for that when ordering. read more

I was really pleased with my visit to The Bird. I went on a weekend during lunchtime, and the place was quite busy. Despite that, the service was super quick. The sauce had flavor but was not spicy to me, but whatever it was, it had a sweetness to it that made it taste disgusting to me. The celery slaw was not to my liking at all. It didn't help balance out the sauce that coded the chicken and the buns. The only thing salvageable on that sandwich was the pickle slice.
