It took 45 mins to get our food! Just two of us. The waitress apologized profusely for the delay, it was not her fault. Our salad portions were a joke, not enough for bunny rabbit! Our meals served on brown kraft paper, not a plate, pathetic. The portions were small, the flavor was so-so. The steak was tough, overcooked, and tasted old. Their sauce selection for a smoke house was poor, not even one barbecue sauce offer. Seems like they like vinegar. The dry rub on the ribs dried out the meat. The owner should stick to his diner business. We give it one star for the sweet waitress. We will never go back and do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. The food was so bad I had to laugh...Long story short: long wait, slow service, non-attentive staff (they were running around in a rush and the table behind us had the wrong order), poor food quality (soggy bread, not-cheesy mac and cheese, dry meat and the water just tastes funny). Perhaps the food was so bad because they just opened up, but the owners have another restaurant in Sussex, so you would think they would have perfected their craft. After eating less than half of my meal I had to go to Yetters (the diner down the street) to feel satisfied. Awful! Will never go back again. The ribs were burnt the macaroni and cheese tasted like it was made with powder, the owner said it was fresh. Filet mignon was butterflied "to cook it properly". I asked the waitress if she could replace the macaroni and cheese with yams, the owner came over and said no, they're not in the habit of throwing away food. Nice place. Our waitress Samantha was nice and constantly checked on us. A $4 cup of coffee is unacceptable, anywhere. We complained that the coffee was disgusting it tasted like it had been sitting on a pot all morning we got there at about 2 and I'm sure that was the rest of the coffee that was in a pot. When our waitress offered to brew a pot I should have insisted on that. I would never want to say anything that would cost anyone their job and since I am a local I want my local Merchants to be successful. While we were in this place we started looking at the reviews and I have to say that I cannot give this a positive review but I can't give it a horrible review either. I had an open-faced hot turkey sandwich with a side of macaroni and cheese and I could tell by the first bite that the macaroni and cheese was definitely reheated. The turkey was fine with the gravy but the plain bread tasted like generic bread, the cheapest you can find. I feel that in these times where I have to watch every single cent that I spend I will not be going back unless I see a change in some customer comments. There are too many businesses that would want my money and changes in the kitchen have to be made immediately. I recommend the owner of this Smokehouse have her/his family come over for dinner and be made to experience what the rest of us have. Good, not great. Had brisket, sliced entirely to thick. Brisket needs to be mopped when it comes of the pit. This brisket lacked moisture and flavor. I used to Drive a truck thru the south..I know what good BBQ is all about.This is not it. Second time here and the last. The pulled pork is average to bland. The ribs are dry and without much flavor. BBQ sauces are just OK. Only one other table occupied in the place and it took 25 minutes for the food to be served. Today my wife ordered the Salmon with dill sauce.When it arrived No dill sauce.. Called the waitress over.. She said they ran out,,but would give her some lemon slices.Started eating the fish and it was raw inside..Sent it back to cook it again. RIPOFF - I ordered takeout on Sept 3rd. Staff forgot to include 1 entree. When I called them, they admitted their mistake and offered to refund me $10 towards a $24 entree. I had a wonderful experience with the Double S when my boyfriend and I were CRAVING GOOD BBQ. We aren't from the area, but I am frequently in Branchville and decided to give this place a try, and WOW were we happy we did! First off, the decor is VERY homey and quaint, absolutely adorable and unique. When we walked in, all of the staff were friendly and greeted us. We asked to be seated outside since it was a nice day, and their seating is unique and fun! They have water barrel tables with high chairs and each table has 4 signature sauces to choose from. Our server (who i believe was Alexa or Alexis, I have a horrible time with names) was wonderful with good quality customer service! She read off the specials and really sold us on each and every item, we had a hard time choosing. Overall, the food was amazing, the presentation was spot on, and the experience was a joy! The ONLY negative that I had was that there were a LOT of flies swarming our food which isn't anyones fault, we were outside. Only thing I could think of is if food fell through the deck, they may hang around and nest. I felt that this did not deserve a shot down in a star because the place is truly amazing! Visited Double S for the first time! A quick stop to do takeout! First impressions: a nice, rustic venue. Clean and efficient! Wheelchair ramp means it has handicapped access. Did not visit the dining room or restrooms for an evaluation! Loved the smells! BACON smoking! My mouth watered! Quickly ran down the menu. Many choices! Wished I could sample them all! Friendly staff made great suggestions! I settled on a pound (qt) of pulled pork, a half pint of slaw and their classic homemade tomato BBQ sauce. Pricey, but not extra humongous. When I finally got home, I truly enjoyed the smoked pork and BBQ sauce! Succulent! But I am not a fan of their homemade coleslaw. It is mayo based and I prefer vinegar base. It cost them a star. I WILL RETURN! Too many more selections to taste. Hope to eat in next time, to get a different perspective of the place! Best that YOU stop in and try their other meats. I was here with a companion a week before Halloween. The best why I can describe is place is as a "fake" smokehouse. The service was great, and our server was fun, but unfortunately we were there for the food. Please note: Pulled pork tasted like it was frozen blade meat, no smoke flavor at all when tasted sans sauce. Brisket did not seem to be frozen, but again- zero smoke flavor if tasted plain. "Smoked" potato salad was simply a mix with some VERY cheap liquid smoke that tasted burning tires smell. Corn on the cob side was about a quarter of a very soggy, mushy ear. They didn't have my favorite corn fritters or suffle here - usually a staple. The corn bread was fresh and moist SO, as stated NOTHING seemed to be actually smoked (although there is a smoker out front that is cold to the touch and seemed unused). Any smoke flavoring was expected to come from one of 4 sauces supplied on the table. I have seen the "sauce yourself" style before and it CAN be great- not here. The problem is that NONE of the sauces matched the flavor of the regions they represented. we pretty much mixed things to approximate a decent flavor, but since- as stated- it didn't seem like the meat was smoked in the first place, it wasn't easy. The atmosphere was fun and relaxed, but the food was horrendous- and the portions were huge. If you like BBQ, eat anywhere but here. read more

The beef brisket was excellent. The staff seated me immediately and made sure I was well attended to throughout my visit. One of the staff was training a new employee and I overheard her reinforcing how important customer service was. Underwhelmed is an understatement for a new restaurant for which I had high hopes. They've been open for several months now so I would expect the bugs to be worked out by now. Arrived for lunch on a Wednesday and sat outside on the front porch. Started with the rib sampler- $8 for 3 small ribs that were clearly leftover and the reason the meat was falling off the bone was that it was completely dried out. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich; on the second bite I found a piece of aluminum foil. I brought this to the attention of the server and there was no further action. The "Texas toast" was already soggy and had no kind of spices on it; and the pulled pork itself was dried out and needed a healthy dose of BBQ sauce. My friend had the chicken and the total for lunch was $42. Will not be coming back. read more

This is a pretty good BBQ spot. We stopped here after a 10 mile hike locally. We were famished and the food wasn't a disappointment. The brisket was pretty good, very tender and with a bit of fat on it for extra flavor. The smoked sausages were okay, they were sweet ital sausages, not my fav for smoking. Collard greens were my fav, nice flavor with bits of pork in there for a rich taste. The baked potato was kind of small, not that I had room for a bigger one. The sauces on the table didn't thrill me and I enjoyed the meat without them. I found them all either too vinegary or too sweet. I also found the baked beans too sweet. Not terrible, just not to my liking. My partner thought they were very good. Same for the corn bread. Tasted more like yellow cake mix with cornmeal than actual corn bread. (My bar might be set higher than others as I am a southerner, lol) All in all I'd definitely eat here again if I'm the area. I'd avoid a few items as mentioned. read more

Just had a wonderful lunch here at the Double S Smokehouse. I ordered the half chicken and it was juicy, deliciously seasoned (so much so ,that I really didn't even need the bbq sauce) and the portion was enormous. My husband had the brisket and it was melting ly tender, rich and full of flavor..just like it should be. Mac and cheese was pretty good, but the bbq baked beans were a stand out. Drinks served in cute mason jars. Staff was new to the biz,but pleasant and attentive. For only being open a few days this place is great. Sussex County NEEDS more diverse and craveable dining spots..and this fits the bill! We will definitely come again to try the rest of the menu! read more

Delicious! We shared a sampler and enjoyed the ribs, chicken, brisket and pork. Then we added a taste of sausage which was also delicious. Enjoyed the fried green tomatoes (4 pieces) with spicy ranch sauce. Pecan pie was terrific (thick/tall piece, not the little thin style that is more common and canned)! I wanted to take my family out for a nice meal. My daughter ordered a cheeseburger for my four year old grandson. While the adults finished up an unimpressive family sampler and while waiting for the waitress to return our credit card, my son cajoled the four year old to eat more of his burger. Then my son took a bite and good thing he did because tasted horrible. The poor child was being encouraged to eat this putrid meat. I told the waitress about this. She said it was too late to take it off the bill because they charged the card already and she would tell the kitchen about it. She also offered a free dessert. I will not be back. Wife and I go for dinner, as we've done since the Smokehouse opened. We both order tri tip steaks and sides and the wife orders a flight. Flight comes and is heavy on the foam, HEAVY. We wait and let the foam recede, no server in sight so I walk it up to the bar and explain to the young lady what happened. The staff member behind the bar replies, ' that's how we have the taps set up, that's all you're gonna get". I walk away and engage our server - she addresses the issue and corrects the pour. Steaks come and are horrible - under cooked and so tough we had a challenge cutting no less chewing them. Bring this to our servers attention and she immediately advises me that the manager will be by our table. Few minutes later, the manager (staff member from the bar) walks up and says 'what's up here'- can't remember exact wording. But what I do remember is explaining the the issue with the steaks - the manager telling me that 'it's steak - it can be chewy'. she proceeds to tell me that she'll comp 1 steak, no sides. I reply that I won't be paying for a steak that wasn't eaten. The manager then leaves only to return a few minutes later at which time she says she will only charge us for the sides that we ate. I request only for her to do what she thinks is right... nickel and dimed us for each side and the flight - bad food and low Customer service at high prices. The owners clearly haven't set this staff up to succeed or empowered the "manager" by training her and setting expectations. Left the server a good tip based on what the bill would have been if there were no issues. Nope, not a chance of returning. So sad....hope that is worth never returning AGAIN ever and we will share the story with future customers. read more

When we arrived it was a cold night outside. Inside the restaurant was almost as cold as outside. Apparently they didn't have the heat on very much, why was beyond me, but it made the experience unpleasant. The food was good. I had the brisket and it was cooked well. There are times I wonder why I accept inferior food and do not make a stink about it. Tonight is a perfect example. If you go here avoid the Prime Rialto sandwich. It was at least 50% fat. Staff is completely disrespectful and inconsiderate. Got multiple orders wrong and when informed of the mistake got defensive rather than just fixing their mistake and bringing the correct item. Also, barely touched my dinner and asked for it to be wrapped up, waitress returned and informed me that she dropped my food with no intent of making up the mistake by offering to make a new meal or offering a discount, especially since the meal was barely touched. Live locally and was so disappointed. The decor was awesome. However, the staff kept coming over numerous times asking if we were done with our food when clearly we were still eating. The full rack rib platter was $21.95 and the ribs were charred. The barbecue sauces were horrible. They were all similar and watery. We were immediately greeted with Friendly staff , cute country style BBQ restaurant. When you're seared , instead of bread or chips they serve popcorn which is so yummy and addicting but don't fill up on the popcorn because you're going to need room for the food! Unfortunately both of our water glasses were dirty , but the waitress was apologetic and quickly brought us clean glasses . Off the menu, The Cow Girl : Grilled cheese with pulled pork and Mac and cheese was unbelievable ! And , it came with a choice of a side , as if that sandwich wasn't enough? We did the entertainment at a recent wedding catered by Double S. We set up, and stacked our equipment boxes safely in a back room. When we were packing up our equipment, we found our boxes with brand new items in them( obviously not trash) filled with food scraps and grease in the dumpster!! Some equipment needed to be discarded, the rest took hours to degrease, wash and rinse. You can't bring your own contractor bags?!! Extremely unprofessional, do not recommend.
