Here is what I have learned about this building: Built in 1883, it is the second-oldest continuously operating business in the county. Hainesville holds the second-coldest temperature in New Jersey and Sussex County, at -32° F. Like you'll find in small Vermont towns, this is a local place that has a little bit of everything on the shelves and behind the counters. It is truly a general store in the big box era. Like you'll find in small Vermont towns, everyone in this building is wonderful to talk to, including everyone behind the counter (young and old) and anyone who walks in. This is clearly locals serving locals, and it survives on this community spirit. It also survives on the delicious food they serve. I ordered up a custom melt and my companion had one of their menu lunch items. We agreed that the deli is generous with ingredients, the food was delicious, and fresh-cooked. One of the best hidden gems NJ has to offer. Don't miss Hainesville next time you're up this way for any reason. High Point. Mahwah. Catskills.
