I think it's unfair when Yelpers slam a new business when they first open up.Every new place has kinks that need to be worked out.That being said,I think was a little unsure about what to expect from the Double S Smokehouse. We were seated quickly and the atmosphere is very homey and comfortable. No pretentiousness allowed,with a roll of paper towels on the table to let you clean the BBQ sauce from your face,fingers and elsewhere! The staff were all very friendly and efficient. And the food?Well everything was awesome.I had a full rack of ribs and I chose corn on the cob and collard greens as my two sides.With a piece of cornbread thrown in for good measure I was in BBQ heaven! Am I in NJ anymore? ...one of the better BBQ places I have been to. I had the brisket over salad and I found it quite good. The brisket itself was not over seasoned thus I was able to sample and enjoy the four sauces they had at the table. The portions were huge. The brisket was falling apart. The ribs at the table were fall off the bone goodness. Overall, the problem getting the 5th star were: Sauces were too close in taste. Need far bolder differences at the table. So this was the first time that my girlfriend drove to a restaurant near my house...The first time I went here two years ago it was nice like I liked the popcorn,catfish, and the fried green tomatoes...This time I got a veggie burger,fries, and south west pasta....When I was inside of the restraint to get me food...The waitress upfront was being so annoying to me saying buddy wait here and saying like all these weird remarks...We then got the food and drove to my house....The burger tasted pretty good and the fires tasted nice but a bit too greasy...The Southwest pasta had zero flavor...You couldn't taste the oil,beans, or even corn...This meal was 27 dollars just for a veggie burger fries and flavorless pasta...One thing I did really like was on of their sauces that tasted very very good...This place use to be amazing but is now just mediocre I do not know if I should come back but let's wait for what the future brings us. read more

My wife and I both had the "Slider Trio" since we didn't want a lot of food, and we wanted to try several items. There was one each of pulled pork, brisket and pulled chicken. Each was served in a small pretzel roll. We both liked the pulled pork followed by the brisket. The chicken was not our favorite. The side of cole slaw was a good sized serving, and it was very tasty. The wait staff was pleasant, and the service was quick. This is a BYOB establishment, and we wish we had known that in advance. We went here before a Miners game on Friday. We were really looking forward to good bbq in NJ. We made reservations and were seated immediately, but it took over 30 minutes to place our orders. It was empty when we arrived, but others seated after us were served first. The food was unsatisfactory; several steaks ordered were still mooing and completely tasteless and the ribs were dried out and over pepper. When the bill came the tip was added in and we were charged a fee for using a credit card even though we paid cash. Poor service and awful food. The ambiance was cute. The owner was terrible. The food was dry and had no flavor. The nachos tasted like ketchup was poured all over them. I asked for a medium hamburger for my daughter and when it came out it was burnt to a crisp. I let the waitress know that my daughter doesn't like it and asked to see if the manager would allow her to send it back and pick something else out or make another burger medium. The owner said they only make the kids burgers well done and if the waitress got it wrong then she will need to pay for it. I thought that was terrible service. He said the food cost is expensive and he won't pay for it. I told him nachos and my grilled chicken sandwich tasted bad too. he said I was the 20% that his food was not for and there was nothing he could do for me. My daughter had stomach cramps the whole way home from eating just a little of that hamburger. I felt sick to the stomach once I got home too. This place was beyond disappointing. Very good bbq place. Got the half rack ribs and was not disappointed. It came with two sides and corn bread. My sister got pulled pork and liked hers as well. The smoked potato salad was very delicious. There were 4 different types of bbq sauces on the table that all kind of tasted the same but they were good. Service was very nice and fast. They stayed on top of water refills and checked up on us. We sat outside which had a pretty view. A few too many flies for me though so maybe next time we'll eat inside. Years ago I use to enjoy this place, not so much now. Prices increased significantly & the food was sub par. First bad sign was that it was not busy like years ago. Second when looking at the menu & seeing $50 for a full rack of ribs is ridiculous. Third, all 6 of us who dined there tonight had an unpleasant visit to the toilet shortly after eating there. Ribs and Chicken came out cold/Luke warm @ best. Ribs had no flavor not even a discernible dry rub. More importantly "WHERES THE SMOKE"? There was no smoke flavor. Waiter took it back to heat up. It came back out hot but food had NO TASTE at all. The ribs liters "melted" off the bone as if they were stewed. So this was my first time here since I am not from the area I figure I stop for a quick bite to eat. My boyfriend ordered the burger which he thought was good. For myself I ordered the cheddar hush puppies & wings. I had one bite of each & had told them I didn't like it . The wings were burnt to almost black , the blue cheese tasted very strong like rubbing alcohol, and the hush puppies were dried up & burnt too. I didn't cause a scene at all , was very respectful & just asked for my check. When the check arrived I expected not to be charged. My family owns restaurants for over 40 years that are very well known & it was completely unprofessional. The sauces on offer really aren't anything special. Watered down ketchup and down vinegar based sauces. It's a BBQ joint...where is the spices? Brown sugar? A place with so much potential and I hope that these guys do well. They run a decent diner and made the jump into BBQ. Just awful. After waiting 30 minutes to order( we understood, short staffed) the food was underwhelming at best. Positives- cornbread was nice and sweet. The beans with burnt ends while delicious did not have any burnt ends in it. At least none at our table. The french fries were crispy and perfect, we could eat them all day. The mac and cheese was the perfect balance of sharpness and was not gooey. The brisket was good, but I would never drive for it. Negatives- the spare ribs were horribly over seasoned too heavy on the black pepper and dry as jerky. The flank steak ordered medium came out rare and mooing. It also lacked flavor! Yes it was smothered in onions and the demi glace was on the side, but we had to salt the meat to make it palatable. Soft drinks were $5 a pop, could have gotten a beer for that. They added an 18% gratuity to a party of 5 and an additional $6 for using a card all without telling us. I was so excited to try this place because I've always loved the Double S Diner. Unfortunately, our food was awful. It was cold, over priced, and had no flavor. It seemed old too. We had the rib appetizer and it looked and tasted as if it was put in a water bath for hours! It was dripping water on the plate. My boyfriend had a burger and I swear it was a Bubba burger that you buy in the frozen section at shoprite. I had the brisket and it had no flavor and had an odd yellow tint to it. We sampled the pulled pork, brisket and ribs. The ribs were unremarkable and none of the sauces were particularly helpful making them better. The pulled pork was good, but I wish they would have had a western Carolina sauce to go with it because that would really bring out the smokey taste. I arrived with high hopes and an open mind. While the food was decent, unfortunately, Double S Smokehouse was nothing special. We started with onion ring fritters which were kind of a smaller onion ring, but not quite onion straws. These were quite good, and the highlight of our meal. Alas, at a BBQ joint, the highlight should be the meat. We had the sampler for 6, figuring it was a great deal for the amount of food. BBQ makes for great leftovers. This came with about 3 lbs of meat, divided more or less evenly across brisket, pulled pork and sausage. 3 sides and 6 pieces of cornbread. Both the brisket and pulled pork were on the dry side. There was very little smoke flavor, and very little seasoning. Neither the brisket or pulled pork seemed to have any bark. I'd have loved a little pepper crust on the brisket, and a real deal rub on the pork. However, they were both on the bland side. I felt that both the brisket and the pork needed BBQ sauce to be passable, and that simply shouldn't be the case. The sausage was cooked right, though I can't really tell if it was smoked. There was simply no smoke flavor. At least the sausage wasn't dry. It was the best of the 3 meats. For sides, we did mac n cheese, brisket baked beans and sweet potato mash. The sweet potato was far and away the best. Nice creamy consistency, not overly sweet. The baked beans suffered from the flavorless brisket. Simply a bland rendition. The mac n cheese was your basic pedestrian version. The cornbread was pretty flavorless and on the dry side as well. This place has potential. They just have areas for improvement. I stopped here on my way home from a road trip. I would have liked to have tried the ribs, but we'd already ordered more than enough food. I won't be traveling back just to try the ribs, but should I be in the area again, I'll give them another shot. read more

Can't say the pulled pork was bad, but definitely more on the bland side. The reason my review is low is because of the BBQ sauces. Two of them tasted like watered down ketchup (I hate ketchup), one tasted like watered down vinegar, and the last one which was labeled "Sweet and Spicy" tasted the same as the vinegar one. Definitely disappointed and not impressed. This place has so much promise, it's a shame they lack so many basic things. One other thing that bothered me was that you can tell they microwave the sides. Mushy describes most of the food, just disappointing. Loved the outdoor, rustic seating until we sat down and were swarmed with flies and there was an odor that smelled like roadkill sitting in the sun too long. No one could determine where it was coming from. We ordered our drinks (sodas) while we looked over the menu. About 20 minutes later, our waitress came over to take our order and I had to ask for our drinks as she had forgotten. We were the only patrons outside!! I ordered the filet mignon, medium rare and my son ordered chicken fingers. My filet came out and while I like my steak rare, this was too rare! Definitely not done medium rare. My son went to take a bite of his food. Apparently the corner of his tray was just off the edge of the table so when he pushed down on it, the tray flipped and all his food landed on the floor. After 10 minutes of no one coming out, I had him clean it up (I am in a wheelchair). The waitress finally showed up and saw what happened and asked if we wanted his food wrapped up. I said no it was on the floor and she said he could eat it anyway. There is a "5 second rule!!!" She never offered to replace it. Service was subpar. Food okay. Won't be returning. read more
