I met the Dude and I liked his food. Such a nice guy, glad I gave it a try! He visited my 'hood, and his food was good. Now I'm fat and happy, man this rhyme is so sappy... Enh...I suck at rhymes. On to the food! The Dude was parked near my office and I just had to pay him a visit on this bright sunny Tuesday. I jumped into my sleek high end vehicle (a banged up 1999 old car) and raced as fast as I could to the Dude's location....as fast as you can go without having the wheels of a poo poo ride pop off. Less than five minutes after leaving my office, I spotted the Dude's truck. The truck was huuuuuuuuge and had the same cheerful surfing chef logo that is on his website. On the recommendation of a friend, I embarked on this trip to: 1) Check out Doug's food and the highly recommended steak fajita egg rolls. 2) Snatch up the first to review (FTR) for this business. Wa-hoo! After scanning the lunch menu, all thoughts of a steak fajita egg roll left my mind as the Parmesan crusted Salmon wrap caught my eye. Oh decisions, decisions. What to do? Well I did what any self respecting fat boy would do; I ordered both. Here are my thoughts: - Parmesan Crusted Salmon Wrap ($8): Holy crap this was good! The Parmesan crust wasn't that powdered Kraft Parmesan you get at the local grocery store. No my friends, the Parmesan was the real deal. Each bite of the Salmon had that tasty melted Parmesan flavor which was enhanced by the fresh (Romain?) lettuce, raw onion slices and a delicious chipotle sauce. Everything was held together by a flour tortilla which helped me expedite the process of shoving my face full of tasty Salmon goodness. 5 stars for this refreshing wrap. - Fajita Steak Egg Rolls ($9): The fajita steak egg rolls (which are baked, not fried) were served on top of a generous serving of white (cabana) rice mixed with small pieces of red bell pepper. The rice itself had a mild 'n tasty spicing that was a perfect "blank" canvas/bed for a more flavorful entree. The egg rolls themselves were okay, and a bit disappointing compared to the Parmesan Crusted Salmon Wrap. The egg rolls appeared to be big, but had a thick flaky too doughy exterior leaving little room for the filling. The actual filling of steak fajita meat was deliciously spiced and well flavored. The entire dish came with a very very good pico-de-gallo like salsa which added flavor to the rice and complimented the steak flavor quite well. 3 stars for this dish. While I waited for my meal, I talked to the Dude (Doug Maheu) who was a very personable and nice gentleman dressed in a bright red Hawaiian like shirt. I could tell he was proud of his food truck and happily talked about what separates his food from the other food trucks. He was such a nice guy, you can't help but wish him and food truck the best of luck and a very long & prosperous career. Based on today's meal, I am definitely going to make a return visit to the Dude's truck as I had my eye on the Chipotle Chicken wrap. I would give it a 4.5 if anything. I saw this truck one day on my way to a lunch meeting and had to try it. So today I did just that, I got the Caribbean pork over rice with Mango Salsa, I must admit this is really good for a food truck. However I could do with out the sredded lettuce mixed in with the rice, it kind of takes away from the yummy rice and other flavors. Portion size is just right enough to keep you satisfied if not full. I have to come back for the Salmon that he claims is the first thing that sells out! bonus they take credit cards! read more

Ordered the Cajun shrimp wrap and the bbq pork wrap at tonight's Birthday Celebration for the city of Alexandria, despite eating prior to the event. Surprisingly, the truck had the shortest line of a dozen people and just a handful of people waiting for their orders. This is my first time ordering at this particular food truck. Both wraps were fresh, satisfying and filling. Both wraps were covered in the right amount of their special chipotle sauce. The pork wrap just needed a touch of salt, short of perfection. Both were wrapped in a neat presentation. Service was fine, and "Doug" dressed in a Hawaiian print shirt and baseball cap behind the truck window was friendly enough. I definitely will order more stuff if they are around and consistent with the quality food service, and I hope to bump the rating up when I check them out again. read more

I work in a food truck No-Man's-Land in DC. Trucks *never* venture up our way. So when Doug the Food Dude appeared, I almost wept with delight. He might as well have been Delacroix's "Liberty", leading a culinary charge over the carcasses of the few dining establishments up here whose menus coworkers and I all have memorized. Yes, folks, aside from Pedro & Vinny's -- which happens to predate the current food truck fad by nearly a decade or so, and happened to park across the street from my first job out of college -- DtFD was my very first intro to DC's food truck scene. Cue the "womp womp." I'm giving the truck three stars because Doug, the food dude, is so, so, so incredibly patient and warm. You can tell he's a hard-working, stand-up kind of...dude. The other folks on the truck are equally earnest and Puritan. A million props to all of them for dealing with our crowd of hundreds and keeping a smile the entire time. Otherwise, I would give DtfD's truck two Yelp stars. The food's just not inspired or particularly flavorful. I ordered the Lobster Roll at a whopping $14 (didn't even include the Utz chips everyone else seemed to be getting). The lobster salad itself was bland, and the onion, lettuce, and cucumber underneath just seemed odd (and the raw onion completely overpowered what meek lobster flavor there was to begin with). The filling didn't even really matter, tho, considering the overly dry, *massive* roll on which it all sat. I picked half of it away to achieve a better ratio, but it still didn't save lunch. Colleagues ordered the Parmesan Crusted Salmon over Cabana Rice -- but they were out of rice (whaa?), so Doug offered the wrap version instead; the Mozzarella Garden Wrap with fresh mozzarella, tomato, lettuce, and black olives -- but my pal was off-put by the tinny flavor of the clearly-canned olives; and the Veggie Wrap containing cucumber, lettuce, onion, tomato, (more canned) black olives, bell peppers, cheese, and "the Dude's chipotle sauce." I think the general consensus was that the food was average. Not bad by any means, but not life-changing. So for food, the dude kinda disappoints. When it comes to positive, engaging personality and a butt-busting work ethic, however: the dude abides. read more

Actually, she usually hits the reviews so much on the nose, that I'm not always sure why I bother writing a review after she's reviewed it...oh wait, I know why...because I'm a Yelpin' fool. heh. In a nutshell, while I'm grateful for Doug the Food Dude pulling up in front of my office (which is NOT in DC, so getting food trucks out to us, is generally a big deal), the food is just...bland. Extremely underseasoned and not really inspired. Nothing unique or different, or even delicious enough for me to want to walk that one block to where Doug is parked. However, it's not bad. Doug. I want to love you doug. I really do. You are super friendly, and laid back in your hawaiian t-shirt and flip flops, but, its not me... its you. More specifically, your food. The chipotle chicken was disappointingly dry. The sauce finally made a guest appearance in the middle of the wrap but, like "Arrested Development", was cut short. The Carribean Pork suffered from the same fate. The meat was on the dry side, and the marinade/sauce just didn't have the punch I was looking for. The parmesan crusted salmon was decent, definitely their best dish. But again I feel like the flavors were on the tepid side. The entire menu could use a shot to the proverbial nuts of flavor. It wasn't overwhelming, nor underwhelming, just .... whelming. And with everything being in the $8-9 price range, it leaves me desiring more. read more

I know for this summer at least they hang out in Ballston during the Art Market once a month, and in Crystal City during the outdoor movies. I love food, but it's so much better when it's mobile! I had the chance to hit up Doug the Food Dude on a day when I had two choices for lunch due to my hectic schedule that day: 1) eat various snacks around the office for lunch (bagels from who knows when, an assortment of nuts, bags of chips) or 2) call ahead to Doug and see about getting a to-go order. I opted for the latter and let's just say that was the best decision of the day. I ordered the chipotle chicken wrap via phone and also inquired as to whether or not there was a line outside the truck. I was lucky enough to put my order in before the Tysons lunch rush and there was no line when I arrived. I was able to pick up my food straightaway and dug right in. The wrap is simple but delicious-- a whole wheat wrap with leafy greens, tomato, chicken and of course, the creamy chipotle sauce. Really tasty! Would I eat it again? Absolutely. Can't beat a combination of a healthy lunch and quick service! Now, if only Doug the Food Dude did house calls... read more

This review is based on their Maine Lobster Roll, which cost me $14. It is served on a normal sized sub roll, but it is mostly filled with spinach & cucumber. There is too little lobster on it and it is season with too much celery seed (or something that tastes very similar to celery seed). Overall it is not a very good lobster roll, and for $14 I expected a lot more in terms of quantity of meat and definitely a lot more in terms of flavor. They serve other sandwiches and wraps, mostly wraps, such as a Caribbean pork wrap and a Cajun shrimp wrap, which are more reasonably priced around the $8 range. Maybe you will have better luck with those, but I would not recommend their main lobster roll based on its current pricing and recipe. read more

Was headed to one of the main chains of Crystal City but saw Doug the Food Dude standing outside of the truck and taking orders... had to try! I am so glad I did. I ordered the chipotle chicken wrap and was very pleasantly surprised. It wasn't huge so I wasn't too full. The sauce was really awesome and the highlight of the wrap for me. I also tried the Cajun Shrimp Wrap -- the seasoning on the shrimp is also super yummy. Not too spicy but so full of flavor! This truck definitely has a place in the food truck world... sometimes the trucks are disappointing but I hope Doug sticks around!! read more

Over priced and unoriginal. Two stars because it was at least edible. I love good trucks because of their originality and variety. This truck has neither. It's very much Applebee's style cuisine. Generic, processed and low on flavor. They serve wraps. The tortilla wrap is not homemade. The sauce may be homemade but if so it's greatly lacking in flavor. The vegetables are at least fresh. The wrap came served with a bag of chips. The mini snack size. I was still hungry. And couldn't you at least make your own chips? $8 for a chicken wrap with a bag of chips. Twice as expensive as Subway with just as much excitement. I was very disappointed. read more

When I walked out of my office door at saw that Doug the Food Dude was on the same block--that I didn't even have to cross the street--I was excited. Mainly, because I'm lazy and spoiled and if I have to cross the street for something, I always think twice. Also, I had looked at the menu and it seemed interesting. I ordered the Caribbean pork roll-up, which was seasoned pulled pork, cucumber, and tomato. It was tasty, but I bit dry since I couldn't eat the sauce option. I appreciate the bag of chips, as I love chips and a sandwich, but would've preferred a different brand. But, definitely a good option for lunch. read more

Stopped by in Crystal City after glancing at the menu in passing headed somewhere else... very glad I did! Doug was standing outside the truck taking orders. It's mostly sandwiches and wraps, and I chose the Cajun Shrimp Wrap -- delicious! It was spiced just right and hit the spot. I only wish it was larger and I inhaled it really quickly. I've tried a few dishes here but I haven't been impressed. The Caribbean pork was incredibly disappointing. I was expecting more spices than fruit, and the lettuce mixed with plain white rice was kind of off putting. Prices are good, though. On par with most of the local establishments. read more

Doug's menu has changed a few times over the months I've seen him, and with every change it improves. He uses spinach in the wraps, not that cheap tasteless iceberg lettuce that most places use. His chipotle sauce and Cajun spice are both great. Entree prices range between $7-$10, and you get a bag of chips with every entree. AND, the meal is actually filling and nutritious (compared to most other trucks). That's more than most trucks give for that price. read more

I have to say, this is one of the better food trucks around. Don't go in expecting Cafe Atlantico: This is good food for a reasonable price. If you don't believe me, go to another food truck where you will probably get gristle in your meat. The Jerk wings are excellent (esp. with the sauce), as is the parm covered salmon. Lastly, I'll say that Doug is a great guy. He's always been extremely friendly and does really focus on the customer. read more

Went to the food truck when it was at Crystal City this past week. I read good things about the Parmesan Crusted Salmon over Rice and that is exactly what I ordered. My order came pretty quick (Doug taking orders and his wife "cooking") which made my kinda question the quality. I got it in a big to-go box with plenty of rice and a bit of salmon. I would have waited an extra 10 mins if it was going to get better. The Salmon was not dry but not moist by any means. The Parmesan crust was just OK, tasted more like just normal bread crumbs. The pineapple mango salsa was OK also. It was $9 which is not too bad for a piece of salmon and a food truck but I just wish the salmon piece was bigger, more moist and I tasted more of the Parmesan in the crusted part of the salmon. Will I try something else from Doug's food truck? Maybe. Will I order the salmon again? No. read more

Doug the Food Dude was one of the first food trucks that caught my eye when reading the Truckeroo lineup. The wraps advertised on his website looked quite healthy and flavorful and a departure from some of the less healthy options that I knew would be tempting me later. Still, after arriving at Truckeroo, we decided to do a walk through to make sure we scoped out everything before committing to ordering our meals. Ultimately, despite the appeal of the Cajun shrimp wrap (feta, grilled shrimp, and chipotle sauce particularly caught my eye), I went with another food truck. My boyfriend, however, ordered the grilled mahi mahi tacos from Doug the Food Dude. After his first bite, his reaction was "where's the fish?!" followed by "I didn't order cabbage tacos". I took a bite and had the same reaction as I, too, had a mouthful of cabbage slaw and nothing else to speak of. He ate a couple more bites before extracting the measly portion of fish out of the two tacos (which were $5 each) to consume alone. The mahi mahi was highly disappointing not withstanding its small portion size. It was advertised as "blackened" or "Cajun" and there was no spicy rub on the fish. Also, the chipotle sauce, while somewhat flavorful but certainly not spicy, was barely visible in the taco. All in all, I was glad I did not choose to order from Doug the Food Dude and my boyfriend, while disappointed with his meal, is happy he knows not to order from this food truck in the future. read more

As the food trucks at Metro Center have gotten stale and appear to be the same ones every Friday, I had to get outside of my comfort zone and broaden my food truck horizons and attended the final Truckeroo of the year. Came across Doug the Food Dude truck and was intrigued by the menu. I decided on the Parmesan covered salmon over rice with chipotle sauce. I am torn as to how to rate this dish because half of it was quite good well the other half left a whole lot to be desired. The rice wasn't very good at all, it was very overcooked. The chipotle sauce did enough to add a little flavor and made the rice more bearable but the rice wasn't up to par. The salmon on the other hand was very good, at first I thought the chipotle sauce would overpower the salmon and after the first few bites I thought I was right but then the taste of the salmon comes to the top and adds a nice kick to the bite. So salmon which is the key part of the meal was great but the rice which is suppose to compliment the main portion just didn't do anything. Doug the Food Dude has potential but has to work on the delivery, it is a little out of my commuting zone so I don't know when I'll be able to try it again but I would be willing to give it a shot down the line. read more

I was excited to see the "Food Dude's" truck parked on Crystal Drive this Friday, so I thought I would give him a try. First off, the owner, Doug is really nice and friendly, and the portion size of the dishes is very generous. I ordered the parmesan crusted salmon over rice with a mango sauce for $9, which is apparantly their most popular dish. Everything was great -- except the mango sauce. The rice was the perfect texture and the fish was cooked well with a wonderful garlic and parmesan flavor. But the sweet mango - pinapple sauce with a cherry on top of the fish was not a complementary flavor to the savory cheese and garlic and fish flavor. I still happily ate it though -- just probably won't be ordering that dish again. read more

A nice variety of foods on different days. The ingredients are fresh and the portions are nice. I only have one major complaint. The food is bland like a hospital meal. I've eaten several different dishes, including those with "spicy" sauces. Sorry, but a little bit of salt is the only seasoning I've found. read more

He was hired to do a employee appreciation event and the food showed up a day early plus the chips were expired.The so called meat that was in the wraps was completely over cooked,dried out and was uneadable and not fixed to each person's order. The actual wraps were so soggy and mushy that you could not even pick them up. Most if not all of the food order went in the trash! I would NEVER recommend this person, nor would I even give the food to my dog! It was horrible! read more

I'm usually a pretty happy camper when I am eating anything that has not come from a chain/franchise restaurant, however, i did not like what I had off the 'Doug the Food Dude' truck at all. The truck visited my place of work on March 9, 2016 and a friend and I got the shrimp wrap, and the pulled pork wrap, and the pulled pork was worse, but the shrimp was meh.... I have never tasted pulled pork with less flavor in my life, could do better at home, i.e., where was the flavor or spice??? You say, 'In the Chipotle Sauce'....BUZZZZ...wrong!!! It was the mildest, flavorless Chipotle sauce I have ever had. Spinach, Cucumbers and Chipotle on everything, who puts cucumbers with pulled pork? I'd rather cole slaw with pork, stop trying to be foo-foo! No napkins, no drinks for sale, and oh, don't let me forget, we TRIED to order the Salmon wrap and they said, 'the salmon is questionable, we had a problem with the generator/compressor'! You would have to be drunk at 2 am to enjoy this food. Even then, order Domino's, or go to Wendy's up all night, you'll be happier! read more

Ordered the caribbean pork over cabana rice. granted that the pork was slow roasted for over 18 hours, this thing was so dry there was no moist aspect of the pork being able to shred ever so delicately. Same review about the parmesan crusted salmon over caban rice, there was just too much rice and not enough meat (same price - $9). P.S. where's the pineappple mango sauce?! The couple working the truck were extremely nice and took the time to explain the menu and allow for me to make a special request. Had the Caribbean pork over rice. The chipotle sauce is perfectly flavored; it's stuffed with fresh veggies, and the pork is juicy and well seasoned. All this and a bag of chips for $8. I attended the outdoor movies in Crystal City this past Monday night. And as I hadn't had the time to eat dinner before going, I thought I'd try Doug's food truck. So I ordered 2 hot dogs with cheese. And after taking one bite out of one of them, I had to spit it out into my napkin as it was the most overlooked, water logged piece of mush that I've ever had the displeasure of trying to eat. How this guy can sell hotdogs that have been in his cooker for probably amounted to all day or more is beyond ridiculous. To describe it as despicable would be an understatement as I had to toss $8.00 worth of hotdogs into the trash can. I've been in this planet for almost 58 years, of which 52 I've probably been eating hotdogs at ballparks, New York City, etc. and this was nothing short of disgusting. I also sent Doug an email asking for a refund as I didn't want to cause a scene that evening but he didn't even bother to respond. Doug the Food Dude made an announced visit near my work this week, A second truck also made the visit. All morning we anticipated two new food trucks so when 11:30 rolled around we were out the door and ready to eat. After browsing both menu's I felt in the mood for items off of Doug's truck. I got the chipotle chicken wrap and i hedged my bets by also getting a bbq pork sandwich. $8 and $6 respectively, each came with potato chips. Took about 3-4 minutes for my order to come out, with two people ordering ahead of me. The chicken in the wrap was chunked/shredded, surrounded by fresh greens, with a large slice of bell pepper, and sauced with a creamy chipotle sauce. It was alright with the chicken being a tad on the dry side. The bbq was pretty nondescript, shredded pork with a slightly spicy sauce on a squishy bun. It had a lot more meat than my wrap so at $6 is a bit of a bargain. The coworkers with me on this trip got their food from the OTHER truck. I wasn't keen on waiting around while my food got cold so I headed back to the office. I was done with both sandwiches before they even got back in the building. 30 minutes they had to wait and they both wished they had ordered from Doug's truck. I'd be interested in trying the lobster roll and the parm salmon if he makes this trip regularly. I'm also curious to see if his combination of shrimp and feta is any good, it doesn't sound that good to me. read more
