My oldest grand and I took off to go the few miles to Down On Main. The place was HOPPIN!!!! There were people waiting for tables, waiting at the bar, standing around chatting with friends, and it was noisy!! Hahaha We went to the bar to place out to-go order. Jayla put our order in quickly, made sure everything was right, and never stopped. She was holding down the bar, making sure everyone was satisfied, plus taking orders, and getting other drinks done as well. Our food came out in about 15 minutes. Down on Mainstreet is a busy place in Downtown Washington. You can enter from the street side of the parking lot side. I lucked out and did not have to wait for a table. They have inside, bar and some outside tables in the back. The atmosphere is casual. The menu has a lot of options but I went with the Steele Burger and fries as the side. My burger was cooked to order and I liked I could pick my cheese and toppings. It was good sized and tasted great. The prices were reasonable. Being so busy it is a noisy place. Dog friendly! Sat on patio with my yorkie in her stroller so I loved this fact. Extensive reasonably priced menu and food was pretty good but could have been seasoned a little more so decent food just a little on the bland side. Our waitress wasn't friendly she was ready to go home for the day but all other staff that we encountered was very friendly especially the food runner and host staff. The place was busy, but they accommodated our request to sit outside (to escape the noise) without hesitation. I was able to get my burger very rare and it was delicious! I had a special friend in town last night who had previously shared Down on Mainstreet was her favorite place to eat in Washington. I wanted it perfect and it was. DOM never disappoints from service to the lettuce wraps I can never get enough of. We waited a tick to get a window table which I recommend. It's just so right. My wife and I were enjoying a weekend getaway and found this place along Main St. where we were staying. We were immediately seated at a table near the front windows. Our waitress promptly greeted us and took our drink orders. Our Margarita and Lynchburg Lemonade arrived quickly and were delicious. My wife ordered the crab and shrimp quesadilla and I got the Nauti Philly. The Philly was very hot and gooey with lots of cheese and shaved ribeye, along with onions and mushrooms. The Cole slaw did not disappoint either. Very tasty! The crab and shrimp quesadilla was quite nice as well. Lots of meat and the portion size was like a meal considering my wife ordered from the starters menu. First experience here was terrible. We ordered shrimp with rice and a salad. Everything was extremely bland, and the salad was literally just lettuce with ranch and cucumbers. (I don't like cucumbers so mine was just lettuce with ranch). Our server literally abandoned us the whole time, only came to take our orders and only came to bring the orders and check. Very gross food but we decided to try again and got some Cajun pasta and salmon. This time around it was delicious and we will definitely be back. Our server (different one than first time) still didn't come around much and wasn't the friendliest but at least the food was good! We came to Main street Friday 01 17 25 as we do when in town .. Ordered Gumbo .. salad and Taco salad .. Was not pleased with what we received .. I have often recommended your Gumbo and Taco Salad as how good it is .. I am from East Orange Texas and grew up on Gumbo and Cajon food.. Yours was very good to me until our last visit .. Gumbo was VERY watery as it was watered down ,, Has very little okra and no sausage,, and no texture to it .. Hardly any rice .. I should have said something but didn't .. Taco Salad was BAD .. All it had was lettice ,, and hamburger meat .. Very dry and no flavor and dry.. The salsa didn't change it .. With this I must say it will be my last visit when in town .. Salad was good as normal. Love to have lunch here. If you are trying to keep away from carbs the Hamburg lettuce wraps are great. A taco seasoned beef with tomatoes, onions on romaine wraps. I am a crazy coleslaw connoisseur and love the creamy type, this is the best I've had. My husband had a cheesesteak sandwich with fries, not so much for the figure watchers but if you are in need of your dose of fries and a cheesy, meaty sandwich this is the ticket. Our server was very pleasant and very attentive. The ambience is more of a busy talkative environment, great for meeting people. A comfortable casual nautical vibe. First experience at Down on Mainstreet and did not disappoint! (Wednesday 5:30) We will be back! Why, the food was excellent if not exceptional, and the wait staff was extremely pleasant and cordial. The 3-4" deep bowl of gumbo would be comparable to NOLA. The Shrimp Lettuce Wraps had mounds of delicious flavored seasoned shrimp. I asked for my tai sauce on side, as first time trying the way I wanted. The key lime pie, in house made as were told by our delightful waitress Timia, was nice and tart the way key lime pie is to taste. Clean restaurant, floor- tables to utensils. Was told by Timia that the restaurant has specials throughout the week from beers to food. Her pleasantness is one reason we will be back soon. read more

Have been by this place a few times and always wanted to try it out. Went for lunch on Friday. Very busy and was seated up front. Hostess was prompt and nice and ended up being my server. I ordered the shrimp and rice lunch which was very reasonably priced and came with a side salad. This should've been my warning looking at the price. The salad was fine , Caesar's salad. The shrimp and rice was delivered and I did a double take and looked at the food and up at her. I have never seen something so horribly cooked and on top of that presented to the customer. The rice looked as if it was taken out of a little microwave bag and tossed on the plate. The shrimp were supposed to be "blackened" but basically has some light butter with maybe some pepper in it. They weren't grilled but barely cooked. If I was a chef and cared anything about my job I couldn't for the life let something off my line that looked like this or was cooked like this. As a waitress I would never accept this from my cook staff so the fact she delivered it to me and thought it was "good enough" said all I needed to know about this place. It was priced well but even then I was embarrassed for them. I should've sent back but I didn't want to be "that guy" next to a table full of ladies trying to enjoy their day. They accommodated my salad changes and the food was ok priced. I ordered a medium well steak. It came out dry as a bone. It was seasoned well. But to eat what I ate I dipped it in ranch dressing. The hubs said his steak Was fine. But he likes em well done. Y'all the pimento cheese was delicious. Be sure to order ya self a cup of it. The experience was good. Nice looking place. Waited for about 20 minutes, which was to be expected on a Friday night. Everyone was friendly. With that being said....the food just sucked. I got the crab cakes with rice and zucchini. The crab had something too much in it, idk if it was Cinnamon or Nutmeg or what seasoning, but it just overpowered them. The rice was probably the blandest I ever received at a restaurant, and the zucchini was too. My husband got the Tuna, which he said was pretty decent and cooked right, but he also got the rice and zucchini. He also got an old fashion, which looked like watered down Oj. Yeah, they are not supposed to be orange in color. We spent $90 on food that was suppar. I would not recommend this place at all. read more

Worst experience ever, my husband and I have been to Down on Main many times over the years but the last couple have times have not been great. Our experience last night helped us decide that we will never go back. It didn't take long to get a table but it took over 20 minutes for the waitress to take our drink order which of course we were ready to place our full order. We ordered an appetizer and our entrees. We waited almost an hour to get our food and when the waitress brought it everything was cold and hardly cooked including getting the appetizer at the same time as our meal. I flagged down the manager, she didn't apologize or anything just grabbed up the plates to take back to the kitchen. I am sorry I don't want microwaved food so we left. Great way to celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary. We will never go back. read more

We used like this place but we won't go again. Ordered a BLT with fried green tomatoes. It came out and didn't have any bacon, it had regular tomato and fried breading with tiny peace of green tomato. Waitress brought me bacon and apologized and we were good and then we realized that her club sandwich didn't have any bacon. I let the waitress know and we ate what we wanted. The food was good. We had spicy buffalo shrimp as an appetizer. Children had chicken tenders and fries and they cleaned their plates. I had a Reuben with cornbeef and potato salad and it was fairly typical. It was extremely busy at lunch and the service was slow. Found myself looking around for her alot. It amazes me how all of the people who give 1 or 2 star reviews survived life before Covid-19 happened. I would be happy to walk in to any restaurant that has been able to survive this "pandemic" and be greeted by a maskless server. I would most likely be a return customer! The wait staff and cooks that show up everyday are amazing! They are still willing to show up and serve all of the nit picky complainers with a smile on their face.
