Was concerned about hitting up a favorite tourist spot but I'm so glad we did! We luckily beat the crowd for a Sunday dinner. You simply order first and then find a table. We luckily quickly snagged a table for 8 in front of a separate shaved ice spot located adjacent to the restaurant. Everything we ordered tasted great. Even a simple chicken Caesar salad was done right. See my pictures for food ratings. A koi pond is in the middle of the restaurant and our kids were given fish food with their meal to feed the fish! Definitely recommend this spot.

Another wonderful location to eat a meal out. Great vibes with live music. Different restaurants to order from and then eat outside with other visitors. Another one of my Favorite means in Maui. I got the frozen pina colado but didn't like that much. Overly sweet and very frozen so got plenty of brain freezes. Very cute to look at but I couldn't drink more than half. My aunt ordered a pork plate of some sort. Very big portion unfortunately I thought this was alright. The pork (at least on this day) was overly salty and no other flavor besides salt. The mango salad was refreshing and we all agreed that was the best pet of the plate. We got the lava lava shrimp appetizers which was so good! Very filling since it's fried. That sauce is chefs kiss. I recommend that. The star of the meal was the lobster rolls we ordered. One of the best lobster rolls I've ever had (and I've only had two great ones!) that's a definitely must get if they still have that on the menu. I dined here in early 12/2022.
This place gets so much hype. It's dingy in the front but really nice once you go downstairs and enter. The food was mid, very diner-esque but if you get a coupon from any local store then it's worthwhile
One of the stops on our honeymoon to Maui. Walking in it isn't much but after you seated, it has such a vibrant and bright vibes. Arrived around 11:30am and was seated right away for brunch. We got a pint of mimosa, avocado toast and southern style moco loco. Everything was very tasty! Especially the moco loco!!! The price wasn't too bad for Maui
Read some great reviews about this place & liked how they were open past 10pm- which is a rarity in Maui I've heard. I think they stay open until midnight or 1am most nights! AMBIENCE We got here on a Tuesday night- and it was POPPIN!!! Live music & sailor trivia event followed- lots of knot-tying involved...have legit island vibes! It's a good time & the whole bar & seating areas are outdoors. There's an adorable moat (haha) that runs through too. So cute. There are also 3 TVs behind the bar so there's something for everyone. FOOD I ordered the local grilled fish tacos & their fish happened to be mahi mahi. I expected it to taste dry & flavorless, since this spot seemed more like a bar but NOOOO- it was amazing! And I usually hate fruit with my tacos, but this combo worked. Salsa tasted really generic like it came from a bottle but the tacos were great. Fish tastes fresh- which was most important! And I was so impressed with the fact that they will prepare fresh fish you catch as well. How legit is that! DRINKS I didn't try any cocktails but I heard the POG foam mai tai & mule island style were pretty well balanced in flavor. Foam part didn't taste flavorful though. I got the mule mocktail & loved the tartness of it. CASUAL Order at the counter & seat yourself. Very laid back but a fun spot to eat, especially for late night when everything seems to close early. It's on a busy street with lots of shopping & dining options too. Water is serve yourself which honestly I think is perfect for bars. If you show your receipt at the shaved ice spot next door, you get 15% off! Nice PARKING It's street parking only fyi, so plan accordingly.
The Lobster and Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese is what caught our attention, and it did not disappoint. The bread was fluffy soft, and the sandwich was quite filling. Very good! Also wanted to try the whole fried fish, but it wasn't available on the day of our visit. We also arrived at the very last minute to order breakfast. Mom went with the Southern Fried Chicken and biscuit, which was the perfect size for her. Hubs ordered the Pork Belly Benny - poached egg cooked perfectly and liked the crispiness of the pork belly. Kiddo enjoyed the ahi tacos, and the other kiddo liked his fish and fries. Decent portions for the price, and we enjoyed the atmosphere.
Had the fresh catch of the day grilled. Forgot to ask what the fish was and didn't take a picture. It came with white rice, broccoli and carrots. My parents ordered the fish and chips and lava shrimp which I did take a picture below. The shrimp is fresh. It's open air dining with a cool pond with goldfish.
Down the Hatch restaurant is a seafood restaurant located in Lahaina and boy is it good! Reasonable prices for lunch with super fresh seafood that is full of flavor! We spent the day in Lahaina and we're looking for a good place to eat for lunch. Excited about the good reviews on Yelp, we decided to try Down the Hatch. We ordered the lava lava shrimp appetizer, grilled lava lava shrimp tacos, seared ahi tacos, and the fresh Ahi fish sandwich, and everything was excellent. Especially the seared Ahi tacos, was very generous on the ahi which was surprising. Everything tasted very fresh, and full of flavor. The tacos were accompanied by housemaid chips and salsa, and the Ahi fish sandwich was accompanied by fries. Simple flavors, but definitely a big hit!! My daughter just gobble down her all he fish sandwich, my husband couldn't stop talking about how good the food was! They also offer a kamaaina discount of 15%. We will definitely come back next time we are on Maui.
POG MAI TAI FOR THE WIN This place is one of few that i would say are worth the wait. The food was yummy, the drinks were good and strong, and the outdoor/indoor seating is so nice in the Lahaina weather.
Another recommendation from a friend. She went here last summer and really liked it so told me about it. Upon research I found out that it was on a DDD episode! (Diners, Drive-ins and Dives) So it must be good. ;-) After a long day of traveling, tired and hungry we ended up here on our first night in town. The line to order moved fairly fast and our food came out even faster! We all liked what we got and would visit again.
Highly recommend coming here if you're in Maui! there was a 15 min wait when we came but it didn't take too long, we ordered and found a table + food came out fast + we got the shrimp po boy, lava shrimp and crispy fish tacos and everything was delicious! Big fan of the shrimp!! The po boy had soft buttered bread and came with shoe string fries yum + the mango salsa on the tacos was divine. Also the fish tacos (came with 2) were HUGE! Biggest tacos I've ever seen + nice ambiance with ponds and koi fish + outdoor seating (can get a bit hot but they have large fans and shaded seating) My second favorite meal after Tin roof!
We were in the area shopping and I had this place bookmarked. So incredibly glad that we stopped by! We got the fish and chips and it was absolutely fabulous. It must've been the most fresh fish and chips that I ever had and one of the best I've ever had as well. The outside was battered and fried to perfection. It was a nicer thicker batter (if you like that) that was crispy on the outside, and totally moist and juicy on the inside. The pieces of fish were huge! The shoestring fries were quite good as well. I must add that the staff were extremely helpful, accommodating, and fabulous! I had a walker, but there was no way to get down the stairs, and immediately a staff member grabbed the walker and brought it down for us. They have outside dining and it's quite packed. But we ordered online and the food was ready promptly.
Stopped by for a quick lunch before hitting the beach. Down the Hatch is located on the bottom floor of the open-air plaza, towards the right side. Plenty of table seating options and a bar. We found the food to be average, if not a little underwhelming. The sauce in the mermaid fries was a little too similar to straight mayonnaise. The fish portion on the Captain's Catch was very small and quite salty, not very fresh tasting. The best part of the meal was the fish sandwich with the seared (raw) ahi, but the texture of a huge chunk of raw fish can be unappetizing. For the price, we expected a bit better. Perhaps we would have had a better time if we ordered drinks. The bar had quite a few tasty looking signature cocktails ranging from $10-15. Can't say I'd really recommend this spot over others on the same street for food, however. read more

After a long day driving the coast of Hana... we came to down the hatch for a bite to eat. I had seen reviews and the menu from Yelp before deciding to come here and the menu had me sold. There was a line and a full house but the line was quick. We got seated at the bar because we were going to order drinks with our meal. We ordered the "Summer Sandia" I liked it, but if you want to taste the alcohol order something else. Also got the bacon & sprouts (yum). My bf ordered the small cantina pig plate (essentially Kalua pig and cabbage). I ordered the grilled local fish tacos with avocado. Everything was delicious. Also had a classic mule and was not disappointed. Careful when ordering mixed drinks like (vodka cran) the well is Karkov. "Order better liquor lol" unless you want to feel like death later. Where to even start? This has been on my list of places to visit since they came out on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives. I feel like that episode DID NOT do this place the justice that it deserves. The staff is super friendly, especially Chef Jorge who is just such a cool guy. He was so attentive to all of his guests and you could see how much of a staple he was to this place as people were coming specifically to look for him and chat. He is AMAZING. We came 3 days in a row for breakfast. THREE. Whenever I travel, I like to diversify my restaurant hopping as much a possible. But Down the Hatch makes it impossible to want to go anywhere else. I legitimately woke up drooling and thinking about their breakfast. Since we were a group of 3, we were able to all order a variety of dishes so we could try them out. It was very difficult to share because the food was SO SO SO good. We tried -Seared Ahi Benny, Pork Belly Benny, Southern Style Loco Moco, Lava Lava Shrimp & Avocado Omelet, Bloody Mary carafes. Honest rating, all were 10/10. I am a huge benny gal and I cannot tell you which I loved more. Ahi Benny - they pair with this insanely good wasabi hollandaise. At first I was a bit skeptical (which is why I waited to get this on the 2nd day) and I was proved wrong. The wasabi flavor is so good. It's not spicy but has that powerful wasabi flavor that pairs so so well with the ahi. Pork Belly Benny - The flavors of this were just out of this world. I always as for extra hollandaise because I love to have extra for the potatoes on the side and I basically had to stop myself from licking the plate at the end. They also make the benny's on baguette slices and this was a game changer. Southern Style Loco Moco - no words. Picture the perfect loco moco with fried rice, nicely grilled patty. Now, add melted cheese (what?)! Also add GRAVY. Like the kind you find on biscuits and gravy. MIND BLOWN. Like there really are no words to describe the insane flavor fusion this brought. My dad ordered it the first day and on day 3 I had. to order it for myself because I just needed to have it again. The service is also crazy quick. You form a line, place your order, find a table, and within minutes your drinks and food are ready. We went on 3 different mornings and all of them were pretty busy, but the service was just as fast. The ambiance is super cool and it's all outdoor seating. I really wanted to go back for happy hour and dinner, but we ended up reserving our visits for breakfast this trip. But you better believe I will be coming back every time I am in town. LOVE THIS PLACE! A must visit if on Maui, especially if you're staying near Lahaina. Every positive you've heard about this Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives fave is true. Both our airport shuttle driver and Road to Hana host gave this place kudos. We went there for our last breakfast in Lahaina town. From the wonderful live blues and jazz being played on the patio to the great food and friendly service, arrive early and plan to eat well. You order at the counter and then you grab a seat near the koi pond. Hubby had the lavalava shrimp omelet, babygirl got the breakfast burrito, and I ordered the hotcakes and flakes. Now I'm bummed we didn't come here for lunch or dinner or for some grown folks drinks at Breakwall. read more

I didn't expect the counter serve style of this restaurant when I was reading about it online, but I wasn't disappointed. Everyone there was super nice and friendly. The seating area is in an outdoor courtyard with plenty of umbrellas to protect you from the spontaneous rain that seems to frequently occur in Maui. I ordered the local fish sandwich ($16.95) and the local fish tacos ($17.95). Both were delicious! Both dishes were pretty similar. They both had fish with a really good mango salsa that brought a nice taste of freshness to the dish The sandwich was served on a Hawaiian bun that was super soft and fluffy. It also has a hint of sweetness that I thought complemented the fish. I also really liked the red onion that they put on the sandwich. They serve the burgers with fries on the side. The fries were shoestring fries and they were pretty good. I thought it was a hit on the oily side and could have used more crunch, but was good nonetheless. The fish taco was like an average fish taco I liked that they had some cabbage and mango salsa in it though to give the taco some freshness. It was served with tortilla chips on the side and salsa. The chips were ok. I thought they were a little bland, but the salsa tasted like the one you buy at Costco. Overall: 7.5/10 Food: 7/10 Service: 8/10 Ambiance: 8/10 Price: $$ read more

This is our third time at Down The Hatch. Today we went for breakfast at 8 am and there was live music which was nice. We had the chicken and waffles again and the Fried rice. The presentation of the chicken and waffles is beautiful and it was good but the chicken was a bit dry. The fried rice had two fried eggs on top and small pieces of cut up sausage. We loved the fried rice. The carafe of bloody Mary's was also good and you get more for you money then if you just purchase two bloody Mary's. Seating is all outdoors and there are birds and a few flies but that can't be avoiding and we love the open atmosphere. The owners of Down the Hatch also own Mala Tavern and Duckine. Both are really good, high end (expensive) restaurants and worth a visit read more

definitely a must-go! the food is very fresh and the vibe/environment is laid back. you order first and grab any open seat - so no reservation required (when we went on a saturday night). the highlight was the fried lava shrimp! i'm a huge fan of grilled over fried, but down the hatch does fried right. the batter is not overwhelming and too heavy - it's lightly battered and doesn't sacrifice the crispness. paired my meal with the summer sandia - super light and refreshing, while not overly sweet. read more

Lava Lava Spicy Chicken Sandwich We came to this place since it was visited by Guy Fierri on DDD. The food was good, but I feel like this place is slightly over-hyped. The lava lava spicy chicken sandwich wasn't as spicy as I would've liked it. The service was also kind of slow, and for finger food, the place is not cheap. They also had live music playing and the guy who was singing wasn't great and was SUPER loud so we couldn't really hear ourselves talk! I am giving it 3 stars becuase we were seated pretty quickly, despite it being busy. The lava flows were yummy & it is in a great location! read more

This place was well located in the heart of Lahaina and across from a park overlooking the docks. Food was excellent as was service. Portion sizes were LARGE and the drinks were tasty and strong - note the vodka cocktail was a pitcher which was good for 4 drinks, an absolute steal for the price paid. I would take off one star simply because it doesn't seem authentic Hawaiian food, but because the area is very touristy and the restaurant does not seem to market itself as authentic Hawaiian food, I'll leave it at 5 stars. An excellent choice if you're in the area and want something for breakfast or dinner. read more

A little tricky to find the wheelchair access, just keep following the signs, the ramps, go around back, ask for directions again, take the elevator, and just think, if you had put your name down for a table BEFORE all of that, your food would be ready and you'd be seated! Loved this place! Their service is super fast and the food was fantastic. While the lava shrimp looks like a LOT of shrimp, it's actually just on a bed of cabbage in the glass. We didn't mind it so much since we over-ordered anyway :) One minor issue though for me was that I asked for a diet coke but when I went to fill up my fountain drink, it was some generic "diet cola" that wasn't as good. This wasn't enough of a deterrent to not give the place 5 stars though! read more

Trying to find something to eat in Lahaina, my friends & I decided to go to Down The Hatch. I ordered their lobster & crab stuffed grilled cheese which consists of lobster, crab, creamy butter sauce, cheese, tomatoes, cabbage, lava lava sauce, Hawaiian sweet bread, & comes w/ a side of fries. It was quite a bit of a wait but once when we sat down, I was able to take in the atmosphere of the place. There was live music playing & I saw a gecko on the wall trying to remind me about my car's extended warranty. It was definitely a great vibe for a dinner w/ some friends. The plating of the dish is aesthetically pleasing & inviting to eat. Overall it was pretty good & full of flavor. I tried some of the other things my friends got & they were pretty good as well. Great food, great service and a cool vibe. We ordered pickup then came back again for lunch. Coconut shrimp is excellent. Fries perfect. Shrimp tacos are superb. Fried or grilled the food is fresh and tastes really. Homemade corn tacos are excellent. Great menu selection, too. Some places in Maui I've noticed the fried food is being cooked in old oil. Not here! Everything is fried perfectly and taste like real food and not greasy or dark colored from old oil. The best is the staff. One of the bartenders pulled us from lime and took our order. Best advice is try to order from the bar slyly... you may be able to by pass the line. Go to the bar and order a drink then say "I'm kind of hungry... can I order food?" Try to do it like an after thought. You may be able to bypass the long line. Shhhhh... you didn't hear it from me, lol read more

You wait in line to order then find a seat and the food is brought to your table. Not stroller or wheelchair friendly. You have to go down a flight of stairs for ordering and seating. Really cool atmosphere. There's a koi pond. It's all outdoor. But has some under cover areas to sit. There are very few high chairs and the ones they did have all had broken seatbelts which is not fun with a squirmy baby. Kalua pork loaded quesadilla was delicious. Lobster roll was very flavorful, definitely would order again. Fish and chips were good but nothing to be blown away by. The fries do have a cajun seasoning and they were crispy which I did really enjoy. Ahi steak was fantastic. Shrimp app was really good, definitely would order again. Drinks were great. read more

Down the Hatch is the best spot in the area it's in! Sooo good - and for an area where you usually have to make reservations for a food joint that is elite We we're really pleased when there was barely any line around lunch. It's a bit different in the sense you order first and then sit down. The fish tacos were just what we wanted and needed! If it wasn't for the lobster grilled cheese, which was also amazing but very filling, we would have ordered more. Very casual vibe and chill place to come grab food. We actually ate ate a diner before coming here, but the place had terrible food so we sent a lot of it back and came here. Very grateful for the decision! If you're hungry then for sure order the lobster grilled cheese, otherwise the fish tacos were bomb! read more

In A Nutshell: -Down the Hatch in Lahaina is a good place to grab some Hawaiian food. -It's located inside a small courtyard amongst other businesses. -After you order your food from their counter, you can find a seat in the outdoor courtyard. -The outdoor courtyard is a nice place to eat your food w/ a koi pond, outdoor bar and other shops. -I ordered the Southern Style Loco Moco which is a Hawaiian comfort food w/ a Southern twist that features potatoes, gravy and egg w/ runny yolk. This place is always buzzing! The line to order was SO long, but after reading so many raving reviews I decided to wait around. I must confess it paid off! The restaurant doesn't work with assigned seating. So you either are lucky to find a table big enough for just your party, or you have to share these high tables. I didn't really mind sharing the table and as it turned out, I was sharing the table with a couple I had sat next to in a previews restaurant (super random, but also kinda fun). Great mind things alike I guess. But I digress, back to the food. The food was really tasty and for a good price (they have generous portions). Food: * Avocado Toast - This toast is a great contender for top avo toast I've ever had. The eggs were done just right and the roasted garlic cream cheese brought so much flavor. Yum! My mouth is watering just remembering my first bite. * Banana Bread French Toast - this banana bread was moist and not too dense, which I prefer. Now add lilikoi sauce and I'm in heaven. I love myself some comfort food. Drink: * Lahaina Sunrise carafe - I hadn't realized it was an entire jug of the drink. It was a lot for me, but def a good deal if you are accompanied. Amazing food at a really good (for Hawaii) price. This became our goto lunch/dinner spot and we eat there four times. Portion sizes are large. Lines can get long at peak lunch and dinner time but they have an electronic sign giving wait times. We never had trouble finding a table. The greeter guy is awesome and informative. Wait staff were friendly. Only criticism was 2 out 4 times the person taking the orders was totally off. It was a combination of the loud live music and rotating menu on the big screen but we felt like we were really putting them out and the ordering experience just sucked. read more

Saw that this place was on triple d so decided to swing by and give it a try! Everything is outdoor ordering and outdoor seating. Food was affordable and delicious! I got the loco moco with potatoes and husband got the breakfast (with coffee) for $7.95! Excellent pricing and service was friendly. Loved the ambience and would definitely return to try other things on the menu. read more

I'm not sure, but it seemed like a more casual place that would be Walk up...
What do you recommend?
For me it's breakfast. Uncles omelet or burrito. And the Bloody Mary carafe.

I think it will depend on the time of day you go - peak times will be hard to get seating for that many people all at the same time.

We do not. We offer our $12 carafes between 8am-11am

Yes they do! For both breakfast and lunch/dinner menu. It's $8.95.
What does the Lava Lava sauce taste like?
It has a hint of spiciness - not like a spicy mayo

Nope! It's considered an outdoor restaurant so masks weren't required nor proof of vaccination

There is no capacity rules it was pretty busy when I went and no reservations you can just go right up order and take a seat and wait for your food.

3 or 4 at the bar. BUT SKIP THIS PLACE! There are much better places to eat.

yes all tacos can be made with hand made corn tortillas, sandwiches in gluten free buns, and salads without bread. No we have a tiny kitchen, anything fried has gluten. Mahalo
Is this a sports bar to view early soccer games?
This is a restaurant that has a couple TV's at the bar. It is in the middle of a small shopping and dining complex and is open air.
