This place is LEGIT. Like, the line moves fast, the live music is awesome, the food is delish....and you check your bank account and you're not completely broke after early dinner and drinks in Maui. We fed 2 adults, 2 very happy kids (due to lots of food and a shaved ice), and got 7 drinks (not just for us but also some family we met up with...jeeze judgy judgy) and spent about $100 with tip during happy hour. Not bad! I got the sampler plate so I could try a bit of everything and it was quite good! Husband says the chicken sandwich was bomb. Kids loved the chicken but didn't love the grilled cheese (look, they're weirdos that don't like tons of cheese oozing out...that's not the restaurant's fault...just picky kids). I'll go back. With Fish and Chips you sometimes lose the fresh fish taste due to it being fried, but that was not the case here. Really good sandwiches and fries! I had the lava lava chicken sandwich with lava sauce on the side, and my partner got a lobster & crab stuffed grilled cheese. Both were good. The bread on both of our sandwiches was high quality and toasted nicely. The lava lava sauce was mostly just spicy, so it didn't suit our taste buds very well. We like a little sweetness and garlic in our sauces to balance out spice. That being said, I think a lot of people who love spicy food would LOVE the lava lava sauce on shrimp or a sandwich. Their fries are perfectly crispy and salty, and they are shoestring which is our favorite! It is kind of an odd set up for dining, most likely due to COVID.. However, we didn't mind it too much. You will need to walk to the order counter to get water refills yourself, and waiters don't come by your table. This wasn't an issue for us, but it's something you should be prepared for when you dine here. I really think DTH is worth your money & time while in Lahaina. The food is good for the cost, and the menu has something everyone can enjoy. I would call it American cuisine with a Hawaiian twist. (Hawaii was an independent country long before America acquired it, with their own culture/customs etc.) A bonus is that you get a 15% discount on the shave ice company next door if you dine at DTH, so if you're in the mood for dessert, you can walk next door and enjoy a cold treat. read more

Our favorite restaurant in Maui from our seven day trip. Really nice outdoor dining scene with great Hawaiian classics. We even got to sit next to a koi pond. This restaurant was featured in Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, and later at night we got back and it was fun to go back and watch the episode (season 26, episode 15). I wish we watched it before we went, as the Lobster and Crab stuffed grilled cheese featured on the show looked so so good, but we did not know to order it. But the dishes we did order were also excellent. The Day's Special, Ahi and Avocado poke (4.5 out of 5): A shoyu-based poke. It was a bit on the salty side but the fresh fish and fresh creamy avocado paired very well, and it was served on a bed of rice in a cute martini glass shaped dish. Macadamia crusted Mahi Mahi (4 out of 5): The fried fish was really good, but what it was missing was some sort of sauce. What would have really enhanced this dish is if it were topped with something special, perhaps a pineapple mango salsa or some sort to give it a bit of contrast and tang. Sampler platter (5 out of 5): The Lava Lava shrimp, similar to a popcorn shrimp, was fried to a crispy perfection. I don't normally eat shrimp but even I enjoyed this one! Next, the Kalua Pig quesadilla... WOW. The juicy pig combined with cheese and tortilla, and melted and grilled all together, was a joy. To be fair, I've enjoyed every kalua pig I've had on this island, but still, this dish was great. The last item in the sampler platter was crispy calamari. Again, I normally don't order or eat calamari, but as far as calamari goes, this was really good. It was really soft and tender, not rubbery like I always fear. It reminded me of a mozzarrella stick, given how soft the calamari was. I was impressed that even a seafood I don't normally enjoy was made so that I thought it was good. Toward the end of our dinner it approached 8:30 pm and trivia started, which was a load of fun. Woo Hoo! We found a place in town that has amazing food and strong tropical cocktails! Go for their piña colada! It tastes so yummy but don't let that sweet deliciousness take you off guard because there's some potency floating around in there. Same goes for their Mai Thai! Food is solid. The food comes out super fast, and it's incredibly delicious. They have a happy hour from 2-5pm when drinks are half off and some appetizers are discounted. We ordered the lava shrimp, poke of the month (ahi), and fish and chips. Our shrimp was actually free because we took a surfing lesson with Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy, and they give you a coupon for free shrimp afterwards. DELICIOUS!!! The poke was indeed solid too since you can't go wrong getting raw fish in Hawaii. Last but certainly not least, the fish and chips were phenomenal. Glad that we decided to order takeout. When we got there to pick up the food the line to dine in was ridiculously long. We ordered the fish tacos, seared ahi salad and Brussel sprouts. Everything was delicious even when we got back to the hotel to eat it (about 15 minutes away). The fish tacos were fresh and weren't soggy and mashed up like some other places when you do take out - they put the salsa on the side in a cup. The seared ahi salad was also really fresh on a bed of spinach and had some mango salsa which added a nice sweet and tangy touch to it. It also came with some garlic bread which was surprisingly really good - very buttery and garlicky! And of course we also had to get a side of brussel sprouts - it came with this sauce which we didn't really like and just didn't use it. I lowered it one star because there's no seating for large groups. We were 13 and had to all sit separate because it was busy although it always seemed to be. You stand in a long line to order then have to tip upfront and then sit down. One of our drinks was wrong and we mentioned it and it was not fixed. Not for single people. My husband and I are staying on the end of front street. Locals and people online rave about DTH to me. My husband was napping so I walked up from street to get some shaved ice and take advantage of happy hour. I got the margarita and lava lava shrimp. Margarita was very watery and didn't really taste like a true margarita. The shrimp was okay. Is literally a copy cat or Bonefish Grill (the chain) Bang Bang shrimp. Also not friendly for single people. No one showed me the water cups, forks and napkins. I tipped 20% up front thinking they atleast brought you silverware? But no. So they'd ask me if I "need anything". First time j asked about water. Was pointed to the cups 30 feet away and the soda fountain further down. I decided just to skip water. Shrimp came out. Was asked if I needed anything again. Asked about silverware and napkins. Was once again pointed to the far wall despite being alone with stuff. So I finally gathered up my purse, sunglasses and phone, put on my mask, left my food and drink unattended and went and made myself two ice waters and got napkins and a fork. I felt uneasy leaving my food and drink. I have no problem helping myself, but the lack of communication from the cashier and the lack of compassion or awareness from either host/food runner that I might need some help since I'm alone would've been nice. There was absolutely nothing crispy about the calamari... the calamari was cut into thick squid sticks, which made it super chewy. The lava lava shrimp was delicious, but the kalua pig... was a bit too much. I expected more from the Ahi Samurai. As the saying goes, a little goes a long way. The Ahi Samurai had too much going on.
