My favorite meal on my Maui vacay! We made our way up to this part of the island to do the coconut farm tour and chill at Napili Beach. The north west side of Maui is super popular and was the most touristy area we visited. By the time we got here we were tired and hungry and ready to go Down the Hatch! From the popularity I thought there might be a long wait but on this Tuesday we were able to walk right up to the counter and put in our order. From there you grab all your table items and drinks, pick your own table, and wait for your food to come out. The seating is all outside and has a fun beachy vibe! We ordered the sweet potato tacos, veggie burger, and blackened fish tacos. Everyone really enjoyed their food! And as I spoiled it in the beginning- this was my fav meal of the trip! My friends and I went to Down the Hatch on a Wednesday night, and the ambiance was amazing. The area has outdoor seating and there is a bar, which is a big plus, and there were two guys singing! I am sensing a theme when it comes to Hawaii and their live entertainment, but I'm not complaining at all. It was honestly such a fun experience and it made it that much more lively. I drank more than I ate, but I particularly remember the lava lava shrimp and brussels being my favorite food items. I wish the calamari was actually crispy and not the kind that looks like fish sticks, but they were still good. It took a while for one of my friends to receive her food, but that was the biggest "complaint" for the whole night. The drinks were all very delicious! There is also a menu that consists of $8 shots, which are fun, and dangerous. The workers were all pretty cool, and we befriended one (hi Gaston!) My mom lives in Lahaina, Maui. Hence, I have been on this island many times and I always make sure I get my mermaid fries before I leave! The portions here are huge, so I usually share a couple items with whoever I am traveling with. The shrimp is awesome, and I don't like seafood!!! The location is perfect, the live music is a plus and the free dole whip for the kiddos definitely helps make them happy at the end of a meal. The only downside is that finding a table can be tricky. Especially for a large party. Fresh off our flight in from San Diego, we still had several hours to kill before we could check in to our AirBnB and needed a spot that could accommodate our group of 7 and all our luggage. Lucky for us, we wandered into Down the Hatch and found everything we needed to do just that. Most of us opted for Lava Flows which were served in perfectly Hawaiian glasses and were just the frozen, sweet, tropical, alcoholic, beverage we all needed. After one or two of those, we decided we needed to try some of the food we kept see flying by us by the servers. I'm not a fan of seafood (unlike the rest of my table) so while they all enjoyed their fish n' chips and lobster grilled cheeses, I happily chomped away at my loaded quesadilla (loaded with kalua pork, of course). Everyone really loved the food and the casual service. It's the kind of place you just feel comfortable kicking back and staying a while at. Down the Hatch became our go-to spot while we stayed in Maui. I actually think the rest of my group came here for breakfast every morning while we were there, though I didn't wake up in time to join them. Located in the wharf cinema center across from the Banyan tree, this casual eatery is just the place to enjoy a mimosa carafe (or two!) while listening to the live music playing in the morning from 8-10am. We arrived right as they opened and were seated quickly even with the line that already formed. The place quickly filled up so I recommend getting there early. The setup is order first then sit down with your number, so could be a good idea to look up your choices ahead of time online. We had the macadamia coconut pancakes and chicken and waffles, and both were amazing! The pancakes came with coconut syrup which is absolutely incredible, and was perfect with the fluffy macadamia nut filled pancakes. Expected this to be a full-service sit down restaurant... But when I went I noticed that I had to order from the counter, they gave me a #, and I chose my seat anywhere on the bottom floor. They give you a cup so you can serve yourself beverages. You grab your own utensils, condiments, and napkins from the corner and wait for them to deliver your meal. My family came to Down the Hatch around 4:00 PM on a Thursday (07/20/23). The last time I was here was about four years ago with my fiancé, and the line was out the door with absolutely no place to sit. Surprisingly, when we came there was just a short line and we were able to find a table for five right away. IMPORTANT NOTE: If this is your first time eating at down the Hatch with a party of two or more, I suggest one person waits in line and orders the food while the other party looks for a table as it can be extremely difficult and frustrating. Anyway, as for the food, I ordered the lobster and crab grilled cheese. It came with four separate slices, which was more than enough to share with my fiancé. Each bite was filled with the lobster and crab stuffing in between a delicious, perfectly toasted piece of bread. It had a delicious chipotle sauce drizzle on top which added so much more flavor to the sandwich. I wish the dish came with more fries, but fries were skinny, and cooked perfectly-not to crispy or under cooked. We came during happy hour, and I ordered the my Thai and my fiancé ordered the lava flow. My mai tai tasted delicious and had a delicious POG taste with every sip. My fiancé's lava flow was the perfect refresher after a hot day. Sitting is all outdoors, but there are umbrellas over most tables. Just flew in to Maui and my wife and I stopped by here to grab our first since it was on the way to our resort in Kapalua. We ordered the lava lava shrimp and coconut shrimp which we saw were some of the popular dishes on Yelp. The coconut shrimp was very subtle at first but the taste grew on us as we ate more. The mango salsa that it came with was good and refreshing and we paid the extra $4 to add steamed veggies and rice. The sides were actually well seasoned which was a pleasant surprise. The lava lava shrimp was a favorite with its bite size flavor bomb qualities! We came around 2pm which was happy hour so we decided to grab some cocktails. The POG foam mai tai was very strong and rum forward with very little fruit juices so be warned! The lava flow was a delightful pina colada with a nice tart from the strawberry purée. This is one of our go to spots in Maui. We love this place because of their tasty food and shops. We came here on a Tuesday afternoon and it was fairly busy. The line was semi long going up the steps, but we looked for a table first. The seating area is down stairs and there is no elevator to get down. We had a wheel chair and a stroller with us and had to carry them down the stairs. My wife and I shared the lobster and crab grilled cheese which was amazing! It came with seasoned fried which was more than enough for both of us to share. The kids got popcorn shrimp with fries which they shared. Everything was delicious and very affordable. There is also a bar which has a variety of drinks. My wife got a maui sour and I got an IPA which completed our meal. After we ate, we looked at shops which are conveniently located close by. Found this place on Front St, and saw it was a decently priced place with good options. You order your food first and then find a table to sit at. My friends and I ordered the Cajun ahi and shrimp po boy. The ahi was tasty and paired well with the rice and sauce, it was cooked not too raw or not too over cooked. The shrimp po boy was also delicious as the baby shrimps were crispy and came with shoestring fries. My friend ordered a pina colada which was also super good and refreshing. Don't be deterred by the long lines, the food is worth the stop and the outdoor seating with full bar and live music has great vibes. I want to preface this by saying the lava lava sauce is really good. But just like most things in life, it's best served in moderation. We got the lava lava shrimp, fish tacos and mermaid fries, all of which were doused in the sauce. That first bite, amazing, second bite, delish, but after a bit everything ate heavy and became one note. Now granted, that's on us for ordering that way. We liked Down the Hatch so much that we came for a second time before leaving on our last visit to Maui. Also, throughout the week, my eight-year-old niece asked us multiple times, "Can we go to Down the Hatch?" Simply put, Down the Hatch is a great fast-casual restaurant option in Lahaina. It works well for groups of all sizes and was ideal for our family of eight. There's plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the delicious food, drink, and fresh air. This is an open-air restaurant which is part of a larger complex known as The Wharf Cinema Center. It's located directly across from Lahaina's historic banyan tree. We were able to find free parking on Front Street right in front of the restaurant. Free parking is also available on nearby side streets. Paid parking is available behind the shopping center, accessible via Luakini Street. Down the Hatch's bar and dining room are located in The Wharf's central courtyard, situated below street level. The entrance to the restaurant is actually a stairway down from the street-level sidewalk. There are other businesses that surround the plaza, such as Aloha Thai Massage and a shave ice place, but I think Down the Hatch's customers, by and large, are the ones who utilize the courtyard seating. Down the Hatch also has an indoor dining off to the side in the back. The bar has TVs so you can enjoy live sports. The courtyard has a koi pond surrounded by beautiful plants. Seating is mix and includes small two-tops, picnic tables, and communal high-tops. Several of the tables have umbrellas for shade from the sun, but not full coverage from the rain. Happy hour is 2-5pm, daily. During happy hour, you can get $5.50 cocktails, $5 well and draft beer, and 15% off appetizers. Hawaiian residents get 15% off with ID. Next door is sister shave ice shop, Breakwall Shave Ice Company. Breakwall serves regular shave ice, "adult" shave ice (with alcohol), acai bowls, coffee, smoothies, shakes, and more. When you buy from Down the Hatch, your receipt gets you 15% off at Breakwall. We used our receipts both times to get dessert at Breakwall: Dole Whip pineapple soft serve. It was a real treat, especially for my nieces, who loved it. My nieces got their Dole Whip for free because it's included with kids menu items. It's good and I recommend it. Food-wise, one thing Down the Hatch is known for is their Lobster & Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese ($24.49). It was featured in an episode of Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on Food Network in 2017. I'm allergic to lobster, so I didn't try it. Super cool place and food is amazing. We came here for a rehearsal dinner and they had buffet style and all of the food was delicious. My husband and I ended up coming back again once we heard it was diners drive ins and dives for a quick bite after a late movie and so glad we did. Of course I got the lobster and crab grilled cheese. Duh! I don't miss a chance to try something featured on DDD. This is a big sandwich. I questioned the size of the of Hawaiian sweet bread slices because the quarters were so large. It comes with lobster, lump crab, creamy butter sauce, cheese, tomatoes, cabbage and lava lava sauce (reminds me of bang bang sauce), and it's garnished with paprika I think. I could only eat half, probably because I had dessert before dinner. It's the most decadent grilled cheese I've ever had. I also ordered the fried Brussel sprouts and the lava lava shrimp. Let me tell you about these sprouts; there was bacon, brown sugar, and a balsamic glaze. It was smoky with a touch of sweetness to balance the slight bitterness of the sprouts. I love Brussel sprouts now ( I hated them as a child) so I typically order them if I see them on a menu. If you like Brussel sprouts, definitely get an order of these. The lava lava shrimp were fried just right, lightly breaded, & tossed in sauce. It's a great appetizer but would taste good in a entrée too. Not one compliant about my meal or my visit. Yum. Yum. Yum. Best fish tacos we have ever had. The crab and lobster grilled cheese is to die for! I am allergic to bread and cheese and still get this sandwich. It was on the TV show "Diners, Drive-in's and Dives". There is live music some nights. Has a bar with sports on TV (no sound sine there's music). Even though its outside, there is a fan and cover to keep you cool. The team is friendly. They validate parking. They have good sized portions so you will leave stuffed ! This is a place we go each time we are on Maui. Never disappoints!! read more

One of the best restaurants in Maui. The lava shrimp tacos and lobster toasted rolls were amazing. The seating area was also nice with koi and turtles that they let our daughter feed. We would retun here definitely. read more

Absolutely loves this spot. It's pretty casual, you walk in and order your food / drinks at a counter, and they bring it to your table. There's also a second bar, loud music is playing. All seating is outside, (mostly covered for shade ) with a koi pond / river running through the seating area. They have live music most days of the week I believe around 3-5? . There's also a spot to grab shaved ice, fruit smoothies, açaí bowls & even adult shaved ice (get one ! ) . We stopped in twice on our 7 day vacay. I would definitely return when I make it back to Maui. read more

Line out to the street, one of the most reviewed places in Maui... and now I know why. We waited in line for around 30 minutes but worth every minute. They have an open seating area that is very lively and good for people watching. At certain times, they have live music and the musician was really good! Now let's talk about the food. It was "Down" right DELICIOUS! The best thing was the Lava Lava shrimp. It was an explosion in your mouth. Creamy, tangy and really good. Then the Captain's Catch was cooked perfectly. What a nice casual find by the movie theater. Good food, music, and casual bar & grill atmosphere. Employees are nice and efficient and leave you alone even when they are trying to clear patrons out to make room for new ones. The local IPA's are delicious, although priced about $1 too much.
