We went here several times because of location and easy access. In mornings and lunch time, we order food at a counter and find our own seats. Which was actually pretty good because they had lots of available tables and allowed us to pick a place that was comfortable for us. We had breakfast there twice! We had the Lava Lava Shrimp and Avocado Omlette and French Toast. Both were AMAZING. It was so good that we had to go back and have the Lava Lava Shrimp and Avocado Omlette again. We ended up there at lunch as we finished an excursion and was super hungry. Their lobster and crab stuffed grilled cheese was really good as was their fried fish. We ordered fried rice and Loco Moco We also ordered a carafe of Bloody Mary's. We were told that due to Hawaii laws, they can't serve alcohol until 8:00. We ordered the Bloody Mary anyway The food came out right away (since we were first to order) The Fried Rice was good. The Loco Moco was very different. Didn't like it very much. We were done eating and still had to wait about 10 more minutes for the Bloody Mary carafe. Crunch and little zing. The Martini glass was pretty filled with shrimp! I should have ordered my own. Mermaid fries were good too. Saucy. Staff was friendly. Other patrons were all having a great time. It is a cool hang out place to have casual drinks while enjoying the outside weather. Been to Down the Hatch twice on this trip (so far). They actually do a good job even when slammed. Bloody Mary is huge and good, breakfast is fresh and well prepared. With the many positive reviews on Yelp, Down the Hatch was pretty crowded the first day we arrived to Maui so we ended up going somewhere else nearby. We quickly realized that the best time to avoid the crowd was to come by around 11 so we were able to get a table on the third day without having to wait. We've decided to stop by Lahaina from Kihei to do some shopping and site seeing. We wanted to try this place based on the Yelp reviews. Outdoor seating only, no indoor seating. It was a hot and humid day, so we've found an area that was a bit cooler in the shade. I had ordered their chicken and waffles, should of looked at the pictures on yelp. I thought when they meant fried chicken, it would be whole pieces, but what I got was chicken tenders instead. The pieces were a bit small too. Not what I had in mind when I wanted chicken and waffles. The waffles were good, had a nice sweet taste to it. I liked their Lava lava sauce, it was a little spicy, went well with my chicken tenders. This dish was meant to be shared between two people, but the portion were small, so it left me and my two year old still hungry. $5 drinks 3pm-7pm every day in Lahaina? We had parked in the big 3 hour free public parking area a block away at Prison and Front streets, across from the school. We were cruising down Front street near Banyan square, when we saw this sign 'Down the Hatch', which led to a courtyard, complete with bar, overhead TV, overhead menu, and ordering counter, with tables and chairs amid the tropical plants, serenaded by a old timer singing local Hawaiian songs. Romantic huh? Sister was with my wife and I, and wanted to see the rest of the Warrior basketball game on the overhead TV, so this was the place to eat. No more romantic. I ordered the $22 Macadamia nut crusted Mahi, covered with mango chutney. The wife got the $21 Cajun butter grilled Captain's catch, and sister got the $22 sesame seared ahi. Service is typical Hawaiian. Wife got a $5 lava flow, and I got the $5.50 virgin smoothie, to tide away the time waiting for our meal. Tried a bit of the lava flow, and it was very tame, with low alcohol content. This is one place where I could have drunken the alcoholic drinks with no problems and no after effects. Who says Asians can't hold their liquor? The mahi is one of the best tasting fish I eat on the Islands, perfectly cooked tender with the crusted macadamia nut to give it crunchiness, and the mango chutney to give it some sweet flavor, along with rice and broccoli. Wife like her dish, as did the sister. Checked a neighboring table, and next time will have to order the grilled cheese lobster crab sandwich -looks like the mother of all lobster crab sandwiches! In the center of the courtyard, an old timer croons soft Hawaiian music, while playing the guitar. Brings back memories of my first marriage here in Hawaii in 1982. Yeah, I'm that old! . The concept at this place is interesting. Wait in line by the stairs, get to the counter, order your food, and be seated. They bring your food out to your table and you can't really reorder unless you want drinks and you can go to the bar. Great way to increase turnover. We ordered the sampler appetizer and the ahi tuna on rice plus two drinks and our bill came out to 70 something before tip so this place is definitely not cheap. Ahi tuna was a little over cooked and we were confused by the quesadilla situation where most of it up to the end was actually 100% cheese and chips of some sort. Sauces for the quesadilla were good but the ahi tuna came with too much of the wrong sauce- wasabi aioli is the way to go with this one so get one on the side. Lava lava shrimp are just your basic bang bang shrimp and we wish we got more because those were solid. Calamari was tasty. Drinks didn't seem alcoholic enough. There is no clear delineation of who to talk to, where to sit/shared seating or where to order. They should've replaced the koi pond with seating, as its a bit cramped. The food is ridiculously expensive for a place that is supposed to be low key, appetisers starting at $10 and entrees closer to $20--for tacos!! This place isn't a fish market or even fancy, so charging the fancy prices seem to be unregulated and are incomprehensible. I was truly disappointed in this spot as I'd heard good things from locals. After a king day we wanted to try this place out badly since we had seen the Guy Fieri's episode on the food network Chanel. There is no reservation available is a first come service and we had to stand in line but luckily it moved quickly. Once you get to the cash register you order your food and drinks and get an order number and someone tells you were to sit, they had live music and it was good. We had exactly what guy fieri ordered the lobster grilled cheese sandwich and the adult shaved ice, my husband also got the grilled Brussels sprouts with bacon and he liked them.
