This place was disappointing to say the least! Took a 15 minute Uber to get there as it was on diners, drive-ins and dives. Guy Fieri has never let me down, till now! They don't serve alcohol till 8 am, may be a state law, but something to note for visitors. You walk up to order, service was quite slow even though many people weren't there. The eggs Benedict were watery and the mimosas were made with very cheap champagne. I came here with three other friends and no one liked their meals. Came here 3x, here's the rundown: Delicious avocado toast. It was 4 small pieces of toast (delicious bread): 2 pieces were topped with avocado, 1 was topped with blueberries and 1 was topped with strawberries. They all had a sweet cream base and were drizzled with a balsamic glaze that added a nice tartness. Well balanced flavors, excellent quality, not too sweet. Aunties Omlet is so good! Nice amount of veggies, I like the mango salsa with it and they give you half an avocado on top. I got it with fruit instead of potatoes and in all, it was almost too much for 1 person- you'd probably be fine splitting this. The breakfast nachos were a miss. Too greasy and the potatoes were over cooked- mushy without any crisp. BF didn't like the gravy but I didn't mind it, at least it was flavorful. I'd skip this dish though. Liliokoi (passion fruit) basil martini was great!! Tangy, tart and sweet I thought it was Perfectly balanced, couldn't taste the vodka but could definitely feel it lol Ahi tuna salad: Very large portion of tuna- I couldn't finish it. First off, let me say: BEST fries on maui. I know I know, not what you were expecting, but for real. They are skinny and crispy and deeeelicious! We hardly ever get out to lahaina side so when we do, we spend all day on the west side. Been wanting to try here for a while because I love fish and was eager to try a fish dish here. Plus I saw pics of the fries and thought "man, those have GOT to be the best looking fried I've seen in a long time!" Came here around 515pm on a Saturday. There was only a few people in line ahead of us and then it was our turn. So you order at the counter and then go find a table and they bring the food to you. And it's pretty darn fast too which was great bc I was staaaarving. But that's pretty normal. We ordered the ahi samurai as an appetizer, and for the main dishes, I got the blacked ahi tacos, my husband got the lobster grilled cheese (with fries), and my son go the mermaid chicken tenders (with fries). I really enjoyed my ahi tacos and the chips and salsa it came with. I had to try some of my sons chicken (and fries, duh!!!!) which was delicious although since I am not a big "sauce" person, I chose pieces that didn't have too much sauce. Don't get me wrong, if you like sauce, it's pretty darn awesome. My husband devoured the rest of the chicken after he ate his grilled cheese. We thought the ahi samurai was pretty good but I don't think we would order it again, next time we are def trying the Brussels sprouts. This was one of the restaurants on Front Street that we were eager to try while on vacation....we didn't even know it'd been featured on "Diners, Drive In's and Dives". We stopped by for dinner on a Friday evening, and were a little apprehensive. They have a counter for ordering food, and a large open air dining area that looks like it's shared with several food shops, so it was very possible we could order food but have no place to sit to eat it. Luckily, we did manage to find an open table. Anyway, we all tried the Lobster and Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese with Mermaid Fries. Pretty amazing...lotsa crab, but for a "grilled cheese" it didn't seem like it had much cheese. We'd love to return to try more of their menu! read more

The boy that was bussing the tables was doing a fantastic job, such a hard worker going around the tables. If the manger reads this, give him a raise! The line to order was long which was a good sign. There were some shops in the area so we would take turns waiting in line while others perused the stores. As a group of 8 (3 different families), eating in restaurants was a challenge for us. Down the Hatch was perfect because we could order and pay separately and then we found a large table that would seat all of us in the outdoor dining area. One of the members of our group has a gluten allergy and she was able to order food she could safely eat without any issues which was also really nice. Everyone loved the food and we of course had to get Hawaiian ices since we got 10% off with our DTH dining receipt. read more

Just a suggestion: for the lobster and crab grilled sandwich: reduce the proportions to half and price it at 13.99$. I got discouraged from buying it because of the high price (24$) and huge proportion. That's the only item I wanted to really eat. If you sell the half proportion at 13.99 you'd really sell out super fast. It won't act as a barrier for people to order that dish. Initial impression: Love their process of waiting in line to order and then being seated after that. Didn't wait in line any longer than 25 minutes even during their busier times. By the time we sat down, food was delivered to the table within 10-15 minutes. Pro Tip: For dinner, you'll be seated after you order. No need to find a table before ordering. For breakfast and (maybe) lunch, it's probably best to have someone in your party sit at a table while someone else orders for you. Can be difficult to get a table if it's too busy. Scenery: Beautiful outdoor setting in the lower part of a shopping mall. Surrounded by lots of outdoor plants, fish pond, and little birds eating your "left overs" on the ground. Live music at night creates such a relaxing and even more enjoyable experience. This is the first outdoor setting I've heard live music in since COVID started. Service: Ordering with cashier was easy. Food brought out to us by "server" and picked up dishes when finished. Overall, not really a service type of restaurant. If you need refills or something you need to seek someone out. If you just need refill on water, you can freely grab a glass bottle from their cooler by the register. Food: Breakfast at #1 - well-known chicken and waffles. I typically don't enjoy gravy on my chicken/waffles but I would recommend keeping it on. Breakfast #2 - burrito with home potatoes; ordered as is and loved it! The lava lava sauce is a staple for this. Dinner - chicken sandwich. Matt the bartender is great and one main reason we've gone back a few times this trip. It's a little crowded at times and quite loud, which can make communicating with waitstaff difficult. Everyone seems cordial considering how busy it gets and how stressful that must be. We only had 2 food items so, as we usually visit for the cocktails. The mermaid fries were quiet salty and although I asked for the sauce on the side, it was smothered and making the fries a bit soggy. We want to try the whole fried fish, as it looks pretty good. The kalua pig plate was good, but my husband said it was also too salty. I dropped a star because the bathroom is not the cleanest and sometimes ordering food is a pain when the line gets long. read more

Ordered bloody mary at 730am but can't be served it until 8am so the food came out first. Everything was very good. I had the chicken and waffles and it a lot bigger than it looks. Four waffles and 3 big pieces of chicken. My family loves the food. But unfortunately the Bloody Mary carafe was horrible. We all agreed that it tasted very off. You can see in the picture there was way too much dill in it that it looked like a drink of grass. And the species were just all off. I would come here again just nit get the bloody mary. Another one of my Maui local favorites! Down the Hatch is located in the center of Lahaina, a fun and lively area to enjoy at any time of the day. The often have live music throughout the day that simply adds to this fun outdoor atmosphere. My husband and I dined here twice in the matter of three days it was that good. Down the Hatch does not take reservations, this is the type of restaurant that you wait in line to place your order, you find a seat and your order is delivered to your table. Both times that we went the line was not obnoxiously long, but if it is, I promise the food and vibe of this dining establishment are worth the wait. You are able to view the menu as you wait in line using QR codes that are posted. The wait for food was not long at all especially considering the number of patrons dining. I was pleased with a swift and efficient delivery of our food each time we dined. We ordered the Sampler which can be a meal for 2-3 quite easily. I was a good amount of food to enjoy a little bit of everything this local establishment cooks up. Other items we ordered consisted of the Spinach Summer Salad with the local catch and the Captain's Catch Cajun style. All the dishes were served with a plentiful amount of food. Leftovers to enjoy or perhaps dishes to split among friends and family while dining here. For the price, the quality and quantity of food is on par. Down the Hatch is an ideal location for lunch and dinner. I also saw that they offer breakfast. We did not try out the breakfast but the menu to no surprise looks excellent. The gravy has lots of good flavor and there were some spoonfuls of lava sauce (hint of spice). Little waffle rounds topped with fried chicken pieces. I enjoyed it. We were soooo excited to come here for the food! All the food pictures on Yelp looked amazing. So you actually order first, then get a number and seat yourself. We got two tables near the DJ because those were the only ones left. LITTLE DID WE KNOW that they were about to turn into a silent disco nightclub. First of all, our tables were super rocky and uneven. Second, more than one employee that looked like bouncers, asked us to move our tables so they can prepare for the dancefloor. One of the patrons were very pushy about it. Third, all of our food presentation was absolutely beautiful, BUT not very appetizing. Most of it was dry and bland. This gem is one of the best places to eat while visiting Maui. It is a bit tricky to find via gps walking g directions. The area is open seating amongst stores. You stand in line( it was about 15 minutes) then place your order and they bring it to you(pretty quick) to your seating you choose. I had the chicken and waffles which are so delicious. When I got to the front of the line, I ordered a burger. Me and my family found a table. I busied myself, expecting the wait to be around 15-30 minutes. Probably about 1 minute after we sat down the food came. The service was incredibly quick! I ate my burger and wow, it was incredible. The meat was perfect! I also got dole whip there that was amazing. Also, the staff are really nice. I accidentally knocked over all my fries. I was really sorry but they said it was fine and got me more fries. We were fully prepared for Down The Hatch to be over-hyped and it absolutely was not. Our family stopped here for breakfast on our last full day on Maui and we all LOVED our meals. My brother had some kind of breakfast burrito over rice that he devoured. Dad had an omelette with breakfast potatoes that he loved. My hubby had the French toast with ice cream, which he thought would be weird and he said it was the best thing ever. I ordered the avocado and berry toast which came as four slices of toast and was DELICIOUS. My mom went next door an ordered an Açaí Bowl and said it was the best one she had all week. Hate to leave a 2 but i drove all the way here from kihei based on the reviews and was disappointed. Guess many of the great reviews are for breakfast but we came for a later lunch. We found the place, it's all outside (but in the shade). They have fans but it didn't do too much for the hot humid day. We ordered 2 cocktails (lava flow and I can't remember the name but it had cucumber vodka) and both were ehh. Couldn't taste any alcohol in either. And wound up not finishing it. I actually just switched to water after and my husband a draft beer Food- the lava lava shrimp was ok (basically like bang bang shrimp on the mainland but tiny shrimp ). We got the lobster grilled cheese (what guy fieri had from DDD when he came) and it was meh. I wish I listened to the local who said don't get lobster/crab from Hawaii. It was covered in the same lava sauce from The lava shrimp which is the only flavor I got. Tried this place on a recommendation of a friend who came here 2 weeks earlier. Overall, a good place to try and it's on Front Street - where there are a bunch of shops. We got the Sample Platter and Seared Ahi. My husband and I really liked the Seared Ahi and the Asian flair on the dish. We loved the Lava Lava Shrimp on the Sample Platter. Calamari strips were interesting as it was the first time we've had it served in that cut, but it was very crispy! I was so excited to try this place with my family bc of all the hype.. honestly I was let down.. we ordered 3 orders of the macadamia crusted mahi and it was completely fried. I mean to a crisp! It was burnt, all three and that left the fish very dry and couldn't taste any macadamia what so ever?? Was not impressed by the pina coloda or the da kine cocktail. They were so sweet and melted, separated and undrinkable. We left them almost untouched.. I did think the lava shrimp was good!
