*Buyer Beware* This isn't as much about $120 as it is about principal and doing the right thing. Last weekend, July 6th, 2018, we had record-breaking heat climbing above 107 degrees and of course my 87 year old grandmother who is bravely battling breast cancer had no AC! Needless to say, out of concern for her health and well-being, I immediately called to have someone come out and address the issue. Although they were reasonably prompt in coming to her home (a few hours), the technician informed her that it appeared to be an electrical issue and advised her to call an electrician...And then he charged her $120! This was very disappointing. She is not only an elderly Widow with her share of health challenges, to say the least, but she lives on Social Security. And $120 for nothing?! Left with no choice, we called another contractor and, unlike Downey Plumbing Heating and Air, this contractor quickly diagnosed the problem as a blown breaker, replaced it and had the unit up and running in no time. It is now 2 days later and Gram is cool as a cucumber, but still, that $120 was bothering me. I called to speak to Joe, the owner and explained my frustration with his company's refusal (or inability) to deal with something as Elementary as replacing a breaker, which is without doubt, an issue they come across from time to time. He explained to me that it just wasn't practical to equip their trucks with the variety of breakers that are available while several times flaunted his company's 20 years of experience. Well Joe, if after 20 years you haven't found a way to stock a few breakers and train your technicians to pull out a blown one and replace it with a new one then I am left to wonder if that is because it is more cost-effective and practical for you to take money from trusting seniors in their time of need. I asked Joe for a refund or even a partial refund for my grandma and he refused, stating only that he will take my suggestion of stocking breakers "under review." Well Joe, REVIEW THIS!!! UPDATE: Joe, the owner replied to my review within an hour, apparently patting himself on the back because they "prequoted the diagnostic fee, arrived on time, and did diagnose the problem." But Joe! The AC wasn't fixed! Do to a blown breaker! It's not rocket science! if you're reading this as a potential consumer of Downey Plumbing Heating and Air, I'd be willing to bet that you're shaking your head right now. If one calls a roofer it is because they want their roof fixed. If they want a fence installed they call a fencing company. In this instance my grandma desperately needed to cool her house down so I called a company who supposedly specialized in AC! The breaker functioning properly is as essential to an AC unit as is the compressor! Without it there is no AC! The fact that this company doesn't even deal with something as simple as a breaker is Ludacris! And telling my grandma to call an electrician, charging her $120, and walking away is unfathomable. Shame on you Joe! Better step up your game because your competition sure has. Perhaps you could get some pointers from them! read more

Outstanding Service - Above and Beyond! Early one morning, we needed a plumber fast! Due to a backed-up toilet and tub. We called Downey Plumbing because they had a 24-hour customer service line. After getting in their cue for an on-call plumber, we remembered we had a Home Serve insurance policy. We figured that would take too long, but we called them anyway, just in case. Fortunate for us, Home Serve called Downey Plumbing too! Within an hour, Downey had scheduled a technician and within just one more hour she had arrived. Yes, SHE! Alicia showed up even earlier than estimated (when does that ever happen)?!) Alicia was able to clear the blockage quickly. She saw there was still a little water holding so she scheduled to return the next day with the camera for jetting. Since she did such an incredible job, we decided to inform her that the Water Company reported we had excess water use. She told us if it was approved, she'd check it out when she came back. Alicia returned the next day. Early again! Just how we like it! She took care of the jetting on the first issue then dived into the second problem. After assessing, she discovered the shut off valve was broken. She did some further digging- literally-- and replaced an old pipe with a copper pipe (something we thought the old plumber had done years ago!) I may be getting some of the wording wrong, but I trusted Alicia. I knew she wasn't trying to get over on me. She was able to get supplies, fix both problems in a timely fashion on both days BY HERSELF! It was amazing watching this young woman dig up dirt, replace pipes and put everything back in right working order. She was clean, organized, respectful, kind and even fun. You rarely enjoy having a plumber around, but she made the whole process easy. I am so grateful to her. And a shout out also to the staff who worked so efficiently with us, Home Serve and Alicia to make all this possible. It was an invaluable experience. Thank you, Downey Plumbing. read more

I've been meaning to do a review of Downey Plumbing, but one thing led to another and I was busy and never did it. Well almost a year after we received service from DP I am finally doing the review. In July of 2025 our mainline from the city water meter leaked and we had water coming from it and leaking down the street. Because it was the pipe from our pipe not the city's pipe, we were responsible for fixing it. We had work done by DP before and felt they were competent and reasonably priced, so we contacted them again. The person on the phone set up an appointment for a plumber to come by to that very day. Talk about prompt service. A plumber named German came by, gave his assessment and said the office will email and estimate. I was okay with the price, and the next day German came back. He brought another plumber to work on the job with him. The other plumber was Omar. Both German and Omar are very pleasant people and very competent. They gave me an estimate of how long it would take to fix, which may have been five or six hours, if I remember but I think it took about four hours. They had to break the concrete on our property and dig the dirt out, repair the leak by replacing the pipe with a new one, and fill the dirt back in and repour the concrete. Well, they finished and everything was perfect. After nearly a year we so far have had no problems. I'm glad the whole process was fast from first contact to finish because the longer it takes the more water leaks and the more money is spent on the water bill. I recommend Downey Plumbing. Downey Plumbing is by far the best plumbing company that has done work for us. We had a clogged double sink drain, as well as a leaking shower drain pipe. The company was able to assign us a plumber very promptly and provided updates on when the plumber would arrive. The assigned plumber, Alberto, also provided us with updates of his exact arrival time. Alberto was professional, courteous, knowledgeable, and honest. At one point, he had to go into our house's crawlspace to assess what was causing all of our problems. He then patiently explained the work that needed to be done, and he showed us photos he had taken in the crawlspace of our old corroded and leaking cast iron pipes. We appreciated his honesty and the fact the he did not try to up-sell us in any way. Alberto repaired the leaking pipes, unclogged the double sink drain, and later showed us the replaced parts and explained how the replaced parts were causing our problems. It was clearly evident that he made only necessary repairs, and it was equally clear that he took a lot of pride in his work. He was pleasant, efficient, and he cleaned everything up before leaving. In summary, Alberto was the best plumber who ever did work for us, and we will be asking the company to send him out to us again if we need any future plumbing work done. My house is 88 years old, with a floor heater and a wall heater. Unfortunately, last month, both of them stopped working. Frank and Roberto came and after taking the time to go under the house, doing a complete check, and removing the unit (even though it was stuck and very difficult to remove). They suggested that since it was the original equipment and in good condition, it was worth keeping. They took the unit back to the shop, repaired, cleaned, and made it good as new! Frank and JT came back to replace our second heater (a newer wall model) after doing a complete check and finding a huge crack in the back of the heater. My family and I could have been died from carbon it! Within a few days, Frank and Manuel brought the new heater they special ordered for us and it was in place and up and running in no time. Both of our heaters are now safe and in perfect condition. I've relied on Downey for years, since an emergency came up and I had to call after 9 pm on a Saturday night. Downey had a tech at my house, with the problem fixed in two hours. Frank, Roberto, JT, and Manuel are professional, patient, and friendly, with a level of expertise (especially Frank) that is rare. It's no exaggeration to say that I owe these men my life and the lives of my family. I have had Downey Plumbing and Heating out to my house twice for two separate problems. The worker was on time, called to let me know he was on his way, and had my plumbing problem fixed in about 10 minutes. He was in and out and was courteous and friendly. I then called them because my floor furnace had not worked in a year. Once again, they called to let me know they were on their way, and were on time. This problem was more involved and they had to remove the heater and do a complete rebuild. I approved the estimate and the date promised for it to be finished. It was done on time and came under the amount of the original estimate. Santiago was the name of my heating guy from Downey Plumbing and Heating. He was friendly and had my heater back in and working in less than an hour. I also have a 1 year guarantee. I would definitely call them again and I hope I get Santiago again because he knows what he is doing. read more

I am really happy to be able to write this yelp review. I had insurance on my house for a sewer line issue and unfortunately, it backed up several times over the past year. the insurance company sent out Downey to clean the line, which was a short term fix. The Downey folks were sympathetic, but clear with me that they would likely have to be back to fix the issue. After the fourth time in a year, the insurance company finally did the right thing and agreed to replace the line. Victor was the lead guy that serviced my home and he was really terrific. He was clear about what needed to be done, when they would do it, how long it would take, and how much my portion of the bill would be (there was some cost I needed to absorb). Victor and his team finished the work on time and all is working well. I would highly recommend Downey and in particular, Victor! read more

We had a rough week and Orlando Cuevas came to the rescue! Little did he know that my daughter and I had been to the hospital earlier in the week after an accident. As a result of the accident I had to have surgery. Upon returning back to our home after being in the hospital someone noticed a leak in our backyard. Marco from Downey Plumbing unclogged our sewer system last week due to roots problem. We have been having this roots clogging problem every year, since we moved to our current address in Carson in 2012. The techs who did our past roto-rooter services, just unclogged the drain and when I asked as to where the specific problem was, they did not have any idea where and even don't know where our sewer connections to the main county sewer are located. We were very fortunate that Downey Plumbing sent Marco and Albert to unclog our sewer line last week. Marco knew where the roots clogging problem was, based from his plumbing expertise, and, voila, I saw the sewer pipe he extracted and replaced which was full of roots build up. I cannot say enough about the technician Victor Bostos. It is very difficult these days to find so many good qualities in one so young. Victor is the type of person who takes his job to heart and you can tell he is striving to be the best in his field. Victor has a personality that puts you at ease and the feeling the job is going to be done right. He let us know what he was doing and why he was doing it in polite language we could understand. Of all time, right before Christmas. I placed the call. J.T. was kind, sweet, and gave me his honest option of how to handle the situation. Main block are not fun to work with and having our entire plumbing down over a weekend is not great. But they did get us up and running in no time with little interference. They have been to my home on numerous occasion fixing things for me such as: Heating Unit, Cooling Unit, Garbage disposal; this time it was for plumbing. Over the past 20 years, our family has often called Downey Plumbing for a variety of heating, air conditioning, and plumbing problems. Their repair personnel are very knowledgeable and friendly. As an example, earlier today the outside faucet in the front of our house began spraying water when I attempted to turn it off. Had a plumbing problem this week - roots in sewer line. Albert came out and provided excellent customer service. Given the situation, I was really worried about the repair. Albert explained his resolution steps and was patient with us. It really felt like he cared - not just about doing a good job (that was evident) but also cared about the customer aspect. Often we get repair techs who rush through and you feel bewildered. Not Albert, he took his time, made sure everything was working before leaving and made sure he explained everything that was completed.
