Classic hometown/cozy cafe that always has friendly staff and quick but tasty food. Definitely a local place vibe. The place is very small but that is what makes it so special. Awkward foyer so it is hard to find a spot to sit or stand and wait for your table. A little awkward staring at the people eating at the tables while you wait for a table for yourself. We usually retreat to the back of the restaurant there is a little hallway before the restroom that has a line of chairs in order to get out of the way from the front door. The decor could use a little makeover but at the same time it does give a warm grandma's kitchen vibe. Single stall bathroom in back is ok - feels a little grimey though. Menu has both breakfast and lunch. Be sure to get the fresh squeezed orange juice - it is a pricey treat but so worth it. They also have specials that are written above the kitchen so be sure to check those out. Staff are great and working hard hustling back and forth between tables and the kitchen. Never feel neglected or that they are too busy to check in. Food is awesome! Had a little but of everything but the quiche was my favorite. I swear I've written a review for this place, but when I checked, nothing showed up. It's been a long time since I've eaten here, and the food was really good. A bit on the pricey side, but well worth the few extra dollars. I was here early on a Sunday morning and I was one of the few people in here, so it was easy to get a seat. Menu's pretty decent and the server was fantastic; one of the better one's I've had in some time. Anyway, I went with the corned beef hash and it was really good. Fresh off the grill hot and well presented. Bill was about $17 before tip, and I enjoyed my time here. It's located right next to Sargent appliance off old town road near the library, so it was reasonably easy to find. Parking was okay, a bit tight but my car isn't that huge, so it was a bit easier to get in and out. Will be back at some point in the future. read more

Downtown Cafe is a classic. They're very small & there's often a wait but it's so worth it. The Maurice salad is perfection. If you remember the old Hudson's one, this is even better. The chicken salad croissant is excellent, crispy croissant, not too much mayo in the salad & the unexpected sweetness of dried cherries. 10/10. I've been here at least 30 times, and they've never missed. Not once. I'm a creature of habit, and I stick to my staples because, frankly, they're the best on the menu. The Michigan Pancakes--stuffed with apples, walnuts, and sun-dried cherries--are the best pancakes I've ever had. The apples taste like homemade pie filling, and every bite is perfection. Comes with a side of bacon or whatever else you're in the mood for. If I'm not getting those, I'm going with the Chorizo Hash, packed with onions, peppers, and poached eggs, or the Corned Beef Hash--made fresh to order, never from a can--sautéed onions, potatoes, and more poached eggs on top. This is the kind of place you leave happy, every single time. Great food, fair prices, and it's clear they just want to share their cooking with the world--not rob your wallet. A tiny little place on Main Street but with the nicest staff. For our latest adventure, we came back to Rochester because apparently we can't get enough of it. I ordered the southwestern scramble off of the specials menu. The eggs with jalapeño and sour cream was delicious. It came with a jalapeño cheddar corn bread. That was a little dry but still had good flavor. This dish does not come with any potatoes or sides, fyi. They didn't have a kids pancake special but let us order a single pancake with chocolate chips, we also ordered a side of sausage. The pancake with chocolate chip was under $5 and even with the sausage came out to just $8. This is Rochester.. and they still know that you don't need to charge $2 to add chocolate chips to a little pancake. (I'm looking at you shine cafe of Troy). The place was filled with those that seem to frequent this place. I can't blame them, between the service and the food, I would be here often as well. Afterwards, we went across the street to the paint creek trail so I could burn off every calorie I consumed. We shall be back! read more

We got there slightly before 8 am, almost all the indoor tables were filled with regulars -- everyone knew each other on a first name basis, which really enhanced how quaint this place is! Small cozy spot downtown, 11 tables, 36 seats available. Not too long for a table, turnover is fairly quick. Started with a coffee, large fresh squeeze OJ. We asked for flavored delight for the coffee, half order of their Caramel French toast, it's baked in the oven and a turkey Rueben with a side of potato salad and eggs Benedict. The fresh squeezed OJ is not super sweet, it's vitamin c intake but flavor wasn't much, needs some mandarin or something to sweeten it some. Our waiter, Josh is nice, quick and diligent. The caramel French toast was mushy and soggy, would have been better if they had pan fried it and then toasted it. Tasted good but the texture turned into mush with every bite. The eggs Benedict was subpar, nothing special about it. The turkey Reuben was utterly disappointing and nasty, had thin deli slices, their slaw wasn't bad but it would have better accompanied with some kraut to make it more of a Rueben. Their Russian dressing tasted strange but was the only thing that helped to get some of the turkey down. The bread wasn't bad at least. The side of potato salad was awful, maybe as bad as the meijer potato salad I had the misfortune of trying once. This place was really disappointing to say the least. Can't believe it since it had 4 stars on here. There was no part of the meal that made the drive Royal Oak worth the trip. read more

I will plan to go back so I can try some of the other interesting, non-standard choices on the menu--they are what made this place stand out, so if you are bored with other breakfast places, go here. The table umbrellas provide some much needed shade from the hot sun. Surprisingly quiet considering you are on Rochester Road with bumper to bumper traffic. I showed up around 11am to try and have brunch with my service animal & friend. I was denied because my dog was not wearing a service animal tag -- tags are not required & are not indicative of the task a service animal is trained to perform. I tried to show the manager my service animal documents and he was literally waving his hand in my face shooing me away not willing to even look at what I was showing him. I've never been so embarrassed about having a disability that honestly my small dog has been a life saver for. I have debilitating panic attacks and he is trained to lick my hand when he senses them coming on. He went through training for this and I had just arrived to Michigan off a 5 hour flight from the west coast. The manager is unprofessional, uneducated & rude. He does not deserve his business. I will be reporting this establishment as denying a service animal is a misdemeanor. I am so disappointed that this behavior exists in my hometown community. read more
