Two words: Blackened Tofu. If you've never tried tofu, find it disgusting, or think it's a food that only weird hippies eat, I dare you to give Dr. Grubb's Blackened Tofu a try. It's charred to perfection, with the perfect garlic, peppery seasoning and bold umami flavor. Absolutely delicious, and my number one choice for protein at Dr. Grubb's. The menu here is simple: choose your protein, choose an accompanying side dish, and choose a sauce. Aside from the vegan tofu, there are healthy shrimp, salmon and chicken proteins to choose from. When it comes to the side dishes, selections range from a light salad or sautéed veggie dish, to more hearty choice like pasta or cous cous. While the proteins and sides are mostly fresh and healthy, if you're watching your waistline or counting calories, watch out for the accompanying sauces. They're all delicious, rich and creamy, but will also add fat and calories to your meal. That being said, the sun dried pesto is my favorite sauce, which is vegan and filled with Italian spices and flavoring. When I'm in the mood for dairy, I love the creamy dill. If you have picky eaters (I'm looking at you vegans) or are dining with people with food allergies, Dr. Grubb's is accommodating and has something for everyone. They're very knowledgable about food allergies, and since all of their food is healthy and fresh, they know the exact ingredients of everything on their menu. Because they make everything fresh, it's takes a minute to get your order. If you're in a hurry, call in your order ahead of time, and they usually have it ready to pick up within 20 minutes. This place was SO YUMMY! We decided to randomly eat at Dr. Grubbs, one of the few places in downtown Claremont that my cousin had not eaten at. It was an all-girls lunch date, and we walked in not knowing what to expect. The way you order is confusing at first, but the helpful cashier/chef guides you through the entire process. We ordered this crazy $36.99 combo, which included four types of protein (we went with blackened salmon, shrimp, chicken, and tofu), four sauces (the chef hooked us up with all the sauces!), and three sides (couscous, salads/pasta salad, and steamed veggies). Everything was very fresh, as it was cooked to order. All the food is cooked with soy oil, which surprised me because everything tasted so savory. And so we arrive at Dr. Grubb's, a tiny sorta whole-in-the-wall little corner restaurant cooking up some grilled proteins and greens. Their business model is simple. 1) pick your protein, 2) pick your side, 3) pick your sauce. Easy stuff! Kitchen smelled great, everything on the menu was making my mouth water. I let Jeff do the honors since this was his turf. We went with Doc's Herb Marinated Chicken for the meat, Sauteed Vegetable Medley for the side (hmmm, healthy!), and finally Roasted Garlic Apple Aioli for the sauce. YOU MUST GET THE ROASTED GARLIC APPLE AIOLI. Trust. Originally I was going to go for the sundried tomato because that sounded good. But I let Jeff choose and Dr. Grubb's did not disappoint. Even if you ate the entire plate, you'd still only be hitting 400-600 calories a meal as opposed to 1500 calories from a fast food place (or somewhere like BJs or Red Robins). Other than that, the food is TASTY! I am a person that likes foods that aren't TOO heavily seasoned so if you're looking for a shit ton of flavor (like literally "drench my food in salt and seasonings"), then you should go eat at a fast food place. This place is clean eats and the flavor is a good amount. I had a combo 2 (which is one entree, one sauce, and two sides) and got the tofu, which was delicious. It's too bad Subway trademarked "eat fresh" because food here's much more fresh. The concept here is simple, but unique; like Karen L. said, you pick a protein, then a sauce, then a side. Basically, you have your choice between chicken or fish as far as meats go, but the sauces and sides are all good. Sure it's a little pricey, but what isn't in The Village? This place has certain "service quirks" (i.e., "closes" early, "Clerks' Randal-sque" dude working the register...), but it has deterred few from coming back frequently. Sure I've given Dr. Grubbs 4 stars, but that's because I think the service is good. I like the quirkiness; it gives the place character. One time, there was a "minor issue" with my order. The wrong plate was given to me. The dish was replaced, but minutes later my "real" order came out so I had two of the same dish. The server was nice enough to give "my real order" to me for free. (I tried to tip as generously as I could... partly out of unnecessary guilt and as an attempt to show love for quirky small businesses everywhere.) It's amazing that Dr. Grubb's has lasted as long as it has. Word on the street is that restaurants on corner of Bonita don't last long. In April/May, it'll have lasted a year. Based off of the name, I thought it was a BBQ place. To my dismay, it wasn't. It was more of a healthy dining place. With a name like this, it'll definitely catch attention. Let's grab some grub at Dr. Grubb's in Claremont. Located on the north side of Bonita Ave, west of Indian Hills Road, and right before the first alley, you will find the corner restaurant, Dr. Grubb's. From the outside, it looks very appealing and seems to hide quite a lot. When you walk in, my perception of the place changes quite a bit. Before walking in, it looked like a full-service dining restaurant, but it became a small quick eats shop with a few dining tables. With the rising fame and popularity of Dr. Grubb's, you would think the dining area would be bigger. Dr. Grubb's is all about healthy eating. A DEFINITE PLUS! Their menu is interesting as well as innovative. First, you pick your protein (Chicken, Shrimp, Salmon, or Tofu), then your side, then your sauces. The prices will vary from the number of proteins, sides, and sauces that you choose. The common theme is healthy eating. Whatever you choose, you will be eating well. With the fresh food, comes with higher pricing. Also, the beverages are not from a fountain machine and are bottled from the refrigerator next to the counter. I chose the 1 protein, 2 sides, and 1 sauce combination ($12.99). My selections were Blackened Tofu with Hot Penne Pasta and Vegetable Medley with Honey Balsamic sauce. My girlfriend chose the same combination with shrimp ($13.99). She had Blackened Shrimp with White Rice and Baby Potatoes with Lemon Thyme Vinaigrette sauce. As we ordered, we were informed that they were out of shrimp. It was only 6pm, but they would make more and be about 10-15 min more of a wait. We got the bottle drinks (Water- $1.50 and Sobe Green Tea- $1.75). I am still not sure why they don't have fountain drinks here. As I mentioned, the dining area is quite small. We were a little nervous if there was any place to sit since it was almost a full house, but a few tables had previous customers leftovers on the tables. By the time, we sat down, almost everyone had left. Maybe because they knew we were Yelpers **smirk** While we waited, most of the tables are decorated very elegantly with a plant making the scene a little more intimate. At the same time, I was a little worried of knocking the plant over. The employee brought our food over with steam rising all over with a little warning on the shrimp that just came off of the stove. I haven't seen tofu so long that Dr. Grubb's made it so appealing to eat it more often. Blackened Tofu almost looked like it was actually meat. Seasoned and toasted very well and steaming hot. The Vegetable Medley main consisted of broccoli, carrots, and sliced cucumbers. With the Honey Balsamic, it added a tangy flavor to my meal. I was mixed on the Hot Penne Pasta. When my girlfriend tried it, it was cold. Some of the pieces that were under the Blacked Tofu were hot. I wondered if they were waiting on cooking her order that mine was finished too fast. I wish you could sample the sauces since it could be a major difference in your meal. I'll let my girlfriend describe her meal in her review. I did like the potatoes, but I did not try the rice as she did not like it very well. Overall, I am still neutral. I like healthy eating, but it comes at a cost. I'm so sorry Dr. Grubbs, but I have to take off one star since my last review. I came here about two weeks ago and ordered my usual -- Doc's Herb chicken, apple aioli sauce, potato wedges and rice. I had originally wanted the cous cous, but they ran out so I opted for the rice. Well, I'm not sure when they changed their prices on their menu, but they now charge more for a sauce and an additional side. From what I remembered, the price used to be about $9 and now it is $15!!!! This is a bit ridiculous to me because there really isn't THAT much food to be charging $15 for. I can get a dish at The Cheesecake Factory for $15 and make 3-4 servings out of that! The food was still decent, but definitely was not as much as it used to be. Wow! It's rare I give 5 stars but I think this place deserves it. I came here earlier today with my friend after we hiked the Claremont loop & was very satisfied! First of all, it's nice inside and was very CLEAN. There's an area with bar stools which we choose to seat, you order at the register and then they bring your meal. I ordered the Atlantic salmon, brown rice & sautéed vegetables with the pesto as sauce. My friend got the same salmon, broccoli and rice. (We both got the combo 2- mine came out to about $16) Our meals took maybe 5 minutes to come out and I was very satisfied. The portion size was very good and the salmon was perfect. It was nice and soft on the inside and packed with flavor as well as the brown rice (which is sometimes hard to actually taste good!) and the vegetables were on point. And that's saying a lot considering I'm not big on veggies haha MY FAVORITE PART of my visit was that the guy who had taken our order (wish I got his name but he wears glasses) had said the kitchen had an "extra" blackened salmon and asked if we wanted it! This is one of my favorite places to eat. I live in Rancho Cucamonga but my husband and I find ourselves here at least once a week. And the reasons why is because the food is fresh and healthy, I always opt for the blackened tofu it is delicious, pair it with their vegetables and potatoes or brown rice it's perfect. But in addition to that, what keeps me going back is their people are so nice! I can spend my money anywhere, and in fact in Rancho there is a restaurant with a similar menu, but the rancho restaurant, not affiliated with Dr grubbs , that I know of, the staff are rude. First time in Claremont so we asked for recommendations for lunch. My husband's coworker recommended this place. It was Saturday and we arrived 10 mins before 12. Sign said they open at 12. If you have a party of four the best deal is to do the combo. It saves a little $. We did not notice the combos until after we sat down. It's one of those places where you order at the counter, seat yourself and help yourself to silverware and napkins and drinks. The food came pretty quick. There were four of us and they messed up the orders. Instead of broccoli they brought out sautéed vegetable medley for my friend. Then they had to ask what the last person ordered after three plates came out. Strange... it wasn't like they were that busy and the day just started. My salmon tasted amazing and I loved the roasted garlic apple aioli on my sautéed veggies. I would give them 5 stars if I was rating just the food but in this case overall only 4. That day was extremely hot but being inside I would think the ac would keep me cool. I have never sweated so much in my life while eating lunch inside. We asked the staff if we could turn the ac up and he said it is on the highest. He was nice and friendly, I will give them that. But sweat was dripping down my back and my thighs were literally stuck to the plastic bench seat. The food was amazing but as I wiped away the sweat off my forehead it was really hard to enjoy. I would eat at this place every time I go to work and get a lunch break, except for the fact that it's fairly pricey for a quick meal. "What's your prescription?" so ask their menus. The first step is to pick-a-protein (chicken or salmon), the second step is to say-a-sauce (I prefer the Vinaigrette or Dill Yogurt), and the last step is to select-a-side, which are all very very good. The place is called Dr. Grubb's for the fact that their meals are supposed to be healthy and not filled with fried goodies. Their meat is very flavorful at the same time, so it's not something you'll regret! And I definitely don't feel lethargic after eating their food.. which I feel often after I eat "unhealthy" food, from where I go straight into food-coma and may not recover from. This is a quick dine in and to go place but the owner treats everyone like fine guest while dinning and I appreciate the tentativeness he and his staff offer... okay so you're here for the food. I ordered the blackened salmon, potatoes and veggies. The Salmon was so moist and seasoned perfectly. Not dry or overcooked at all. The sauces are handmade and each one has its own taste whether you're a sweet sauce garlicky type, to the always fav lemon sauce. My personal fave is the pesto (chefs kiss ) literally amazing. Had the blackened chicken with roast potatoes and garlic apple aioli sauce - the sauce was perfect with the chicken, although the chicken was seasoned so well, it didn't even need any sauce. Next time, I'll get their tasty vegetables - I tried some from my friend's plate and it had a medley of zucchini, carrots, brocolli, and baby corn. Yum... BEST EATS IN THE VILLAGE! I've been coming here consistently for four years and it's still the best, healthiest eats in the Claremont Village! The have NEVER disappointed. Their quality, taste, presentation and friendly service are head and shoulders above the rest. Their salmon is a generous portion and perfect with whatever sauce you pair it with. Tender and juicy, it feels more like a cheat than a "healthy choice." But where they really excel at is their chicken! It seems strange to get excited about skinless, boneless chicken breast--until you've tried it done right--like they do every time! I've never had a more perfectly cooked, delicious piece of meat. They marinate the chicken for ever and then cook it in a special oven which apparently magically seals in ALL the delicious juices and flavors before they blacken it. Order it with their scrumptious huge side of steamed veggies or amazing cous cous and you have a PERFECT, delicious and healthy lunch. The portions are usually too big and you get leftovers as a bonus! YUM! I love love love this place! And they have some of the most genuinely sweet and friendly servers ever. We shared our sides and it was definitely enough for the both of us. There was a lot of seasoning on everything...but I feel like as someone who loves the more bland flavor, their food was perfectly seasoned in my opinion. And the Honey Balsamic was a great touch to my Salmon. And lately I've been steering away from pretty heavy foods like pastas and burgers, so this was a great alternative for me. It had all the flavor and great taste without feeling so tired and food coma ridden. Place is kind of small, but it wasn't too busy when we went. Service was impeccable. This place is a fast-food sit down and I wish I got the cashier's name so everyone can know how awesome he was. He worked on Thursday 4/12/12 around 3PM, so maybe he'll give a name of some sort. This was an amazing dining experience! I had been here once before and really enjoyed myself so when I was in the area with a couple others plus our dog I suggested that we grab lunch. I'm so glad we came here. We grabbed seats on the patio and before we had even walked in one of the staff had run out with a dish of water for our dog. So kind and thoughtful! One of my faves in downtown claremont. Its healthy, refreshing, and flavorful. You can order on the phone and pick it up to go if you're in a rush. The place is small and has 7 tables tops with booths and chairs. It's affordable but a little bit on the pricey side. The menu is broken up by sides, proteins, and sauces. If they didn't close so early I would eat there after work all the time! Their salmon is delicious! You have to get it with steamed vegetables, basmati rice, and the apple aoli sauce! For the longest time, this place looked like it had a boring menu and was over priced but I went in, got the chicken with yogurt sauce and cous cous and i was amazed. This is some of the most tender chicken i've ever had for that price. It costs about the same as a Quiznos sandwich and they take claremont cash. perfect. Also, the place looks pretty cool inside. Great place to grab a fast, healthy and hearty meal. The choices are simple and everything I've tried has been good. I don't really understand the overall atmosphere of the restaurant, but you can't judge a book by it's cover. They have their silverware pointing out (so you grab the tines end of the fork instead of the handle) in the dispenser, which really weirds me out (most likely because I'm a germaphobe). Also, it is a bit expensive for what it is, but that's pretty typical of restaurants in the village. I recommend the herb marinated chicken with the lemon thyme sauce. read more

Fantastic food and service. I got the blackened salmon, baby potatoes, rice pilaf and lemon sauce. Definitely could have done without the sauce but my girlfriend got the tomato basil sauce and it was BOMB. We both loved it and with food like this I usually have to add hot sauce or lemon but there was no need for either, the flavor of everything was great. I come often to Claremont village and this place as well as Eureka! both hold a special place in my belly. Most definitely coming back. Went today and had the blackened shrimp with cous cous and my friend ordered the grilled chicken with veggie medley. I can not say enough positive things about this place. The service was impeccable! Welcoming, attentive, even cleaned up the table after us, I definitely left a cash tip in the jar on the counter, mind you this is a quick serve pay at counter style business. First of all, Victor was SO AWESOME. They're an "order at the counter and grab a number" type place, but Victor was so polite, nice, and was checking on us constantly! Even though he wasn't "our server," he still made sure to make his rounds throughout and check on customers. Their beer selection is small, but they have great local breweries on tap. Also...
