Big, foldable, piping hot NY slices with good sauce and a solid thin crust that has crunch and chew in the right places and holds up to the toppings well. I've had the margherita, maple bacon and pepperoni and enjoyed all of them. Fav is the maple bacon - the savory n' sweet with the chili maple, bacon lardons, cheddar and scallions is really dang good, but also quite rich. I typically get a marg slice to balance it out a bit. Wash it down with a beer or lemonade. I like posting up by the window to people watch or sit on the patio if it's open and nice out. The space has a retro pizza vibe and service is pretty fast. Me and a couple of friends are scrambling for a place to eat before a concert. We're near Davis Square and we're looking through Yelp for a quick eats place when we find Dragon Pizza. Boom, we pop in for a quick slice. Right away, you can see that there's a vibe going on. There's cassettes on the walls, a retro color palette going on, and there's some slices ready to go for reheating (not to mention some cheap cocktails!) I get two slices (I was curious about the Kung Pao Chicken but I would've had to get the pie) and sit down with my slices. A solid meal for about $10. First few bites are enough to tell, this is a really, really solid place with good pizza. Think of it as a cross between a NY style pizza with some out of the box flavors. If you're in the area, absolutely stop by. Great place. Maple bacon cheddar 5/5 - oh baby this was such a good slice. Came right out of the oven and the lardon mixed with the chili maple syrup on this is insane. A little bit of salty, spicy, and sweet was a great combo and then the crunch of the scallions on top. Chefs kiss. Broccoli Rabe 4/5 - a solid slice but the rabe on this one was definitely overpowering the white sauce. The bitterness of the the rabe was a bit strong BUT the white sauce and parm was delicious so if you love white sauce, this might be the slice for you. Love this super quick, casual pizza place in the neighborhood. They offer basic flavor pizzas (cheese, pepperoni, etc) as well as more exotic ones (Ben's Mushroom, broccoli and rabe, kang pao chicken) to suit your mood. The wait is never too long and the staff is nice. You can order a whole pie that comes in 6 slices ($21-26) or just by slice ($3-5) for you and/or others to enjoy. The serving portion is big (a slice is good if you aren't too hungry) and I don't think I saw anyone ever ordered more than 2 slices to eat. They have a small selection of other items like kabobs, salad and gelato that I have yet to try, too. Kung Pau woweeee! As an avid fan of Asian food, especially fried rice and Kung Pau Chicken, my interest was peaked when I thought about the opportunity to eat Kung Pau Chicken on pizza...the greatest cure to any ailment. I grabbed a decently sized slice to eat during my walk home from Davis Square. (If you have never walked home while eating a slice of pizza, you have not lived.) I was pleasantly surprised! Dragon is an unexpectedly awesome spot! It's hip without trying too hard... they try just hard enough. You feel like you're in an old school pizza place, with a standard counter and tables with plastic booths for seating, but there are cool quirks like the cassette tapes on the wall, artistic touches, and interesting light fixtures. It's a quick bite that still feels cool. All three pizza flavors were great in their unique way. The broccoli rabe is a white pie with roasted veggies on top which gave it a great texture and roasted flavor. I loved the red pepper flakes, which added a spicy kick to eat bite. The cheddar on the maple bacon adding a different cheesey element, along with the savory sweet morsels of square bacon bits. And the garlic sausage & ricotta - our personal fave if we had to pick - was a perfect blend of salty sausage & sweet ricotta over marinara and a mozzarella/parmesan blend of cheeses. The crust is thin, which creates more surface area for toppings (the way it should be!). You get full off the good stuff, not just bread. And the crust was also perfectly cooked, slightly charred to make it crispy but not burnt. I recommend Dragon to anyone looking for a quick bite in Davis without compromising on inventiveness or quality. Gave them a few tries at this point and sadly not impressed besides with the topping creativity. What makes the awesome sounding pies worse is that the execution does not seem to match the concept. I've had the kung pao, roni and a special that had chicken and collard greens on it amongst other things. All just were shadows flavor wise of what you would expect and for the price it did not justify it. For example the kung pao lacked the tingling depth of true sczehuan with chicken that was rubbery. The collard greens on the special were plain as can be. The basic roni was nothing to write home about (I mean it's pizza so it's not gonna be bad). What a neighborhood gem, this is!! We moved to Davis Square over a year ago, and this is our go to pizza spot. The pizza is STELLAR. Best basic pepperoni around, but the specialty pies are always incredible, as well. That being said, this is a "pizza" place but the kale Caesar is excellent, the fried chicken sandwich (weekend special) is amazing, and they make GELATO! The mint chip is so fresh and so so good. No artificial flavors or ingredients. This place is truly the essence of what makes Davis square such a wonderful food centric place. On top of being great quality food, the staff are always insanely friendly. Like insanely! It feels like home. The owner is frequently there, serving up customers with the rest of the staff. While on a pizza crawl, sampling slices from every pizza joint along the red line north of the Charles, Dragon Pizza was by far one of my favorites. Although the slices were likely sitting out for a short while awaiting their next customer, the bacon scallion pizza was nearly unbeatable. The crust was fluffy, not too thick, crisp beyond belief, and robust with balanced flavor. The sauce was perfectly matched by the cheese and even further enhanced by the sweet bacon (with a slight teriyaki flavor) and cut by the freshly chopped scallions. Most other pizza places charge less than $3 for a slice. Dragon's slices weigh in at about $5, however, the quality far surpasses that of any $3 slice in the area. I can only imagine how amazing a fresh, full-sized pizza from here might compare. I'm looking forward to trying more of their pizza creations! read more

I tried Dragon Pizza because of David Portnoy -- not because I'm a fan of that disgrace of a man, but because I wanted to prove him wrong. I'm also not a huge fan of parm, and thought Dave was overexaggerating, but he unfortunately wasn't. You really have to like parmesan on your pizza if you want to enjoy a slice from Dragon Pizza. If you DO (like my partner) then you're in luck! My partner raved about the pizza all night. I will say, their garlic knots were out of this world! When I first moved to Davis Square a year ago I tried Dragon Pizza and I really wasn't a fan of the pizza. Fast forward to now, they are on of my fave pizza spots around Boston! They got the crust right finally! I've only ever ordered slices in-store, so no clue how a whole pie is. I usually order a slice of cheese and a slice of pepperoni. I also ask for it to be extra hot, so it'a reheated a little bit longer and the crust gets a nice crisp to it! The slices are New York style and they aren't too thick, nor too thin. Usually minimal flop. The cheese slice is a three cheese recipe and it's quite tasty. The pepperoni they use is an artisanal 'roni that is sort of shredded kind of and has a really interesting flavor, it's almost sweet, but also salty. I thought it was bacon the first time I tried it. Slices are cheap too so this is such a solid spot to pop in and grab a slice or two. Dragon is definitely a must-try for slices if you are ANYWHERE near Somerville! read more

Came here after hearing some reviews about it being NY pizza. It was a quiet Wednesday evening and pizza was ready in 15 min. It was definitely much more NY like than most places but something about it was different. Not in a bad way though! The pepperoni was good, which we got on half of it (& the main reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. They charged us the same as a pepperoni pizza even though we only had it on half. I'm struggling really hard to write this review because our experience was so bittersweet! I'd say it's a 3.5 right now but honestly the sky is the limit for potential. First things first, look these guys know how to cook and they can make some really good dishes BUT their craft still needs to be fine tuned... it's like a lot of raw talent with a lack of direction. Some of their items are ridiculously delicious while others completely miss the mark in an attempt to create something trendy/hip. Unfortunately you're really left at the mercy of their menu which seems to change often...a lot of their specials that you see on social media or this site won't be there, they go pretty quick. They're still new so again they can only go up but honestly I hope they find their bread and butter for what to serve. Anything they make with red sauce is worth trying however we didn't see a lot on the menu tonight with red sauce. I love the creativity behind their pies but it would be really interesting to see their executions on some classics. My wife and I went for dinner tonight and had one slice of the Sausage with Ricotta an easy 4/5 very robust with a good balance, one slice of Maple Bacon Cheddar which sounds amazing in theory but honestly didn't blend well a forgettable 3/5 with the cheddar overpowering the rest of the ingredients, one shrimp kebab probably the best thing we ate 5/5 lots of flavors & great texture, one meatball kebab second best item 4.5/5 something so simple but crafted so perfectly but finally came the disappointment...the heart breaking disappointment, one whole Ben's Mushroom Pizza that was unequivocally not what we hoped for... a whimpering 2/5. I get it, sometimes part of pushing the envelope and doing something creative means going to extremes but for me the mushroom pizza was way too dry and salty. The extra globs of cheese pushed it over the edge as well and had me wanting to down a gallon of water to wash it out. I really wanted to love it because I love mushrooms, mushrooms on pizza , mushrooms in pasta, mushrooms with Asian food, mushrooms in soup, anything mushroom! But even with my soft heart for fungi it was so hard to eat compared to the rest of the dishes we had. I'm not sure if the sauce was dried up or if that's just the design of the pizza...but I just wouldn't/couldn't order this or recommend it. I could write on and on but I'll try to wrap it up, honestly these guys are a great addition to the area with great potential but they need to hone their craft more. Maybe I'll love it more as I try other parts of their menu but so far it's been up and down. I want to love it because they can get certain items so right but unfortunately I just can't overlook our first experience filled with let downs. If the owner is reading this my wishes are... 1) Focus on that sauce! Whenever you guys do these sauces (especially the reds) they're to die for. I understand not every pizza needs it, I can appreciate a good white pizza but seriously don't be afraid to sauce it up! Pizza is supposed to be easy to eat and comforting not dry and forceful. 2) Expand your menu! It's clear to any pleb that you can cook so add some more nuances or special rotations. It's already interesting seeing a pizza shop doing kebabs but with your skills I would love to try a pasta dish or something of that nature maybe only as a daily special so you don't lose the roots of the restaurant. 3) Have some form of scheduling or ability to find what the specials are, it sucked not being able to try the prosciutto pizza. Also didn't see any BLT or Kung Pao either. I want to know which pizza represents who the chefs at Dragon really are, what's your style, what're your favorite ingredients? Overall just go try it, it's obvious they are great cooks and there's a certain crowd that loves anything they put out but again, for me, I am left wanting more...my review is tough but it's because they're so good that I know they can do even better. read more

My boyfriend and I met Charlie and the extremely cool staff at Dragon Pizza last night. I had read reviews prior to deciding where we'd eat dinner and I was dying to know who the poised, friendly owner was who very clearly loved to meet and chat up guests - while we waited for our patio table, we had drinks and played "guess who the owner is". ANYWHO, the drinks were amazing. Matthew, who was new he told us later, was very nice and he and the bartender/other server, were super knowledgeable and helpful when it came to the cocktails. Craft cocktails on draft! AND they're actually good. I got the pink margarita and was introduced to Cappaletti which added a hint of bitter and citrus to my margarita while also keeping it super balanced - I highly suggest the marg. My boyfriend got the Strawberry bourbon smash cocktail - UNREAL. I might have had a little drink envy, but it's fine. After about 15/20 minutes, we had ourselves a patio table. We knew what we wanted to eat - since getting a few slices was an option, we went that route because everything sounded incredible. Based on reviews I thought we'd love the maple bacon one the most, and don't get me wrong! It was incredible. Thick chunks of bacon and a chili maple syrup, it kind of tasted like a bonfire in the best way. But our favorite, hands down, was the sausage and ricotta. So much ricotta goodness in every bite mixed with the sausage flavor was just incredible. ALSO, I can't forget to mention, the slices are HUGE And the crust is sourdough and thin and crunchy and supportive (!!!) I hate a floppy crust. Charlie (the owner) ran our food and I asked him if he was the owner, as I had guessed earlier in the night - he confirmed and said, "give me a few, we're almost out of the rush and we can have a drink!" Well, we finished dinner, he helped us settle up our tab and he poured us a round of amaro while we talked about where we were from and the greatness of this little gem in Davis Square! Without exaggeration this was the WORST experience and pizza I have ever had. DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE! The first 18' pizza was delivered on a bike COLD, SMASHED and the cheese and topping were stuck the top of the box. Mind you I added mushrooms and there was only a couple mushrooms on each slice on and 18'. The cheese was covered in black ink because they flipped the box inside out to paint the their name on the box, so the printed side ruined the entirety of the pie anyways. The Caesar salad came with little to no cheese, soggy croutons, and one small side of dressing which barely covered half of the salad. So I called back and they told me they would send a new pizza. Almost an hour later the second pizza arrived with just cheese and no mushrooms. I called this pathetic place back and the owner picked up, (he took the order) and as I explained I was unhappy, he cut me off and told me "Sorry you had a bad experience" in a sarcastic tone and HUNG UP! I have never seen from start to finish such lack of care of food handling and customer service. This is coming from THE OWNER. No wonder the delivery guy could care less how the pizza was delivered. Lastly, as it had been two hours since I had started this process, I attempted to have a slice to feed myself. Could barely get through half a slice before spitting it out. The sauce tasted like ketchup and the mozzarella was like rubber, the middle of the pizza was RAW. Save yourself the embarrassment of being hung up on. This place is shameful and a disgrace. Pizza is really good, staff was nice. I just grabbed a slice of pepperoni, which is a little spicier than I expected. But good for sure. They had some interesting options that I'd like to try (Maple Bacon, Lemon Chicken). Ingredients were fresh and quality. That sounds like a given, but there's plenty of Boston-area garbage pizza where the ingredients taste cheap and bland.
