I've eaten at dozens of authentic ramen places and Dragonfly Noodle is on par with the best of them. Friends and I came here for an early dinner and good catch up session. I ordered the eggplant bao bun which was lacking in flavor on the eggplant and needed more sauce. The bun itself was fabulous so it was really disappointing to have the insides not match the skill of the bun. I also ordered the vegetarian ramen and the broth was so disappointing. No, I am not a vegetarian but it takes skill to make a veggie dish that you don't miss the meat on. The ramen was delicious as were the mushrooms but everything else was pretty one note. For dessert, we ordered mochi and had asked for two flavors in one order. The waiter didn't get the order right so we ended up with more mochi than we had wanted. I am sad to say that during my hunt for ramen, Chimera was a let down. I ended up passing by with my family and we ordered an order of pork buns and 4 ramens. Mine specifically was the chimera ramen made spicy. Onto the food! Now, the ramen. I had high hopes for the ramen considering the high amount of stars. But I just couldn't get into it. For me, at least, the broth threw the whole bowl off. It didn't taste right and then when I mixed the chili paste it really threw my taste buds off. The ramen noodles were good and the pork belly was well done, but the broth really ruined everything for me. The one redeeming factor for me was the pork buns. The buns felt fresh and paired extremely well with the pork belly. The sauce at the bottom also blended well with each bite. They might need to cool down on the green stuff (I can't remember the name) because it almost overpowered the bun itself. Overall, Chimera was a let down but I'm not opposed to giving it another shot. It is possible that it was just an off day but for now I'm going to have to give Chimera a 3 star. read more

Pretty good! They definitely had good COVID protocols in place, more so than most restaurants I've been to so that was great. There seemed to be a nice little patio but it was freezing so we ate inside. The food was all around good and really no complaints at all. The pork bao is reminiscent of Peking duck (烤鸭）with similar sauces, although the pickled cucumber was an interesting addition. Wasn't amazing, and would skip this. I have had iffy experiences with ramen in Boulder and have been in search of a new spot when I'm feeling like I need a little noodle in my life and I think I have found the spot. When you walk in you order and take a seat and they bring out your food, which I enjoyed but not sure how it would work if I wanted several beers which is often times the case but I'm sure would be no problem if I just asked. I got the spicy ramen which hit the spot, the noodles were thick and cooked well and the broth was outstanding, but be warned it is spicy. Lastly, the environment was welcoming and friendly. I was only passing through Boulder and was craving Asian food. I was a bit disappointed when we got the food as it felt very Americanized. My husband and I ordered the following for $28. - chimera ramen (shoyu/kombu broth) - spicy red ramen (miso/kombu/bonito broth) - added bamboo for $1 each Both broths were decent; the chimera was a chicken stock based broth so it was significantly lighter. The spicy red was a bit creamier/heavier and too spicy for me. Toppings that come with the dish are scallions, bean sprouts, wood ear mushrooms, and pork. The pork was the biggest offender. It is NOT the typical "char siu"...it is some type of Canadian bacon that was pan fried. It was so incredibly dry and inedible. I couldn't finish the pork because it was so disappointing. read more

Boulder's foodie scene has a wonderful new addition in the form of Chimera, which offers cuisines from several Asian countries. Sometimes when restaurants try to be pan-Asian restaurants, they end up being a jack-of-all-trades and master-of-none. I'm very happy to share to this is not the case at Chimera. Almost everything we tried during our first visit was a huge hit. I knew I had to have the butter-poached lobster ramen, and it was a great choice! The organic ramen noodles are made in-house and remind me a bit more of Chinese noodles, in a good way. The broth was flavorful, and I am guessing that there is black garlic infused into it based on color and taste. (This isn't in the description on the menu or their website). My husband ordered the Chimera Ramen-- also another must-try. A word of warning: the quality of the ramen here is reflected in the pricing. We ordered a pork belly bao for our 1-year-old Master Taster, which he enjoyed, but what he really loved were the duck dumplings! He eagerly gobbled them up so quickly that we ended up having to place a second order, which he also polished off. Chimera also offers soup dumplings, which means that we don't have to make a trip down to Denver whenever I get a craving for these. They're not the best soup dumplings I've ever had, but they get points for proximity. Our waiter mentioned that they're thinking about expanding to either lunch or dim sum style brunch in the future. Be warned: Deceptive business practice! Upon entering the restaurant we ordered at the register and tendered our credit card which was processed. No receipt was offered. We were then seated and ate our ramen. We waited for our check/receipt but the cashier/server never returned. On our way out we asked for our check/receipt to sign and add a tip, and was told it was not necessary. We were NOT told at any point that 15% had already been added, without our knowledge or permission, when we ordered our food. Only when we got home and checked our credit card account did we notice this. Is this even legal? Ramen was decent and staff was friendly, but I was really turned off by the shady tip policy. They make it sound progressive by having a sign that says tipping is "racist and sexist" and so they have a fixed 15% service fee instead. I'd be totally fine with that... if there was service! I went up to order at the register, and my only option was to "opt out" of the mandatory tip. Who is going to do that *before* being served? Heck, I may even tip 15% for fast-casual-type service during covid, but that certainly isn't standard. To me it's clear they're taking advantage of progressive-minded locals, and using social pressure, in order to eke out another 15%. Not cool. The way to do this is to raise prices and ban tips entirely. Then you actually pay the price you see-- even if I paid the same in the end, I'd be much happier with that policy. read more

The pacific Island Iced Tiki is delicious and mighty boozy. I comes in a pineapple and suggests "for 2" on the menu. between 5 people, we shared 2 pineapples. Next we dove into the appetizers. Without question, the single worst bowl of Pho I've ever had in my life. If I had to describe it in a word: Salt. So, so much salt. The broth basically just tasted like a bowl of salted water and nothing else. The reason for this became apparent after I asked the waitress for what I get at every pho spot; a side dish with hoison, sriracha, chili oil, and fish sauce. See, I was taught by an old Vietnamese grandma that owned a restaurant I used to live above to always put your condiments in a side dish, rather than directly in the broth. Putting them straight in the bowl is seen as an insult to the chef who worked over two days to make that broth what it is. So you season to your liking from the side instead. They had the chili oil and the hoison, but no fish sauce. Let me repeat that: a restaurant serving VIETNAMESE FOOD didn't have FISH SAUCE. That's like saying an Italian place didn't have any tomatoes in the back. It's a core, essential ingredient to pho and just about every other major Viet dish out there. Major red flag for authenticity or flavor. For comparison, Black Pepper Pho on Pearl has two different house-made fish sauces, one sweetened and one traditional. Giving two stars because the waitress was nice enough and the service was decent. Nice ambience too. But my goodness, the salt. Just hypertension in a bowl at a certain point. read more

The takeout ramen came as a pile of what looked to be noodles from a .99 cent ramen, 2 pieces of sliced chicken that looked like it came from a can, and a small side of seaweed. Some other veggies but not enough to really be noticed. No egg included. Ignoring the atrocious portioning, it had literally zero flavor or texture. The meal is best described as "instant freeze dried noodles mixed with salt water". Genuinely surprised a place could be of such low quality and have so many people inside of it. I guess their location on Pearl Street is strong enough to support a zero quality business. Do yourself a favor and look at the pictures posted on Yelp in other reviews. I had the chimera ramen with egg and bamboo shoots. Here is my breakdown Broth: it's clean. Usually ramen is made with a pork broth and at some restaurants it can be too greasy and heavy but the broth here is made with chicken and so it's clean. I liked it. 4/5 Pork: it's good. 4.8/5 Sprouts: it's not spicy but on the menu it said spicy. 3/5 Egg: don't order the egg. It's an extra $2 charge and it was refrigerated cold. I have never had my egg cold when going to a ramen place. Also they don't marinate it prior like most ramen places. I can make this egg at home. 0/5 Bamboo shoots: they were too hard. But the marination was okay. 1.5/5 Customer service is good. 5/5 I think there aren't many ramen places here so this place will do. read more
