I've been a client of this salon for over 20 years on and off while living in NYC, and have always appreciated the quality of work. At my most recent appointment, I had a very uncomfortable experience. After being seated, I was addressed in front of others about a comment that my hair is "never right" and that my stylist may not be the right fit for me. This was not what I intended, and it felt embarrassing to have that conversation publicly while already in the chair. There have been times where I've needed minor adjustments after seeing the final color fully styled, which have always been addressed and corrected without issue. I continued to return because I was generally happy with the end result. I completely understand that concerns about adjustments may need to be discussed, and I respect that not every client/stylist relationship is the right fit. However, I would have appreciated a private conversation beforehand rather than being put in that position at the start of the appointment. The way this was handled felt unprofessional and disappointing, especially given the level of service and cost. I will not be returning as there are many other salons that can do it right the first time. Just sharing my experience for others. read more

I have been to several Drew James Salons -- Hollywood, Pembroke Pines and Plantation. I had amazing stylists at two of them -- Plantation and Hollywood. On my last visit to the Hollywood store, I had no issue with my stylist or the service but asked the receptionist as I was checking out about the discriminatory price structure that charged a 3 or 4 times greater cost for cutting curly hair vs straight hair. I was told stylists had to get special training to cut curly hair that is not taught at Aveda schools and therefore they charged more. I asked didn't that essentially amount to a race-based tax for patrons of color who typically have curly hair. I took a picture of the price menu and the outside of the salon and made a personal social media post about it on which I tagged Aveda and Drew James. It wasn't rude; just objectively noting the facts and asking the question and asking them to reconsider the practice and its consequences. No one reached out to me to address my concerns. Since that encounter, I had not been to a Drew James salons in quite a while -- years -- but needed a quick color retouch so I recently called the one close to me to make an appointment. The number didn't work. I called over two days but couldn't get through and, because the salon was so close, I drove over to make an appointment in person. I had also texted but got no response and asked when I walked in if the number had changed. They confirmed it had not. They confirmed that three stylists could see me this afternoon and because it was just a retouch I selected the least costly one. About 10 minutes later, I got a call from the salon apologizing that they had made a mistake and that the stylist was actually not available at the time slot they scheduled for me. So, I asked to just be booked with one of the other two stylists who I had just confirmed had availability. Then I was told none of them were available. I asked how could that be the case in the 10 minutes since I left the store and then the story changed. She told me I'm sorry but we can't book you because it's not a "good fit." I asked if she could tell me what she meant as I had been going to the salons over two decades. She said there was a note in the system that they could not service me, but she wouldn't tell me what it said. I recounted my history with the salon and said I had never had or been made aware of any issue with a stylist, I had paid for all my services so I couldn't understand why I would be banned. She said she would ask a manager to call and, hours later, I've heard nothing. The only thing that could be an issue is my questioning the discriminatory price structure. So, not only are Drew James salons okay with practicing racial discrimination but now apparently they have a retaliation policy and practice as well. If you go to a Drew James salon, take note and see if the practice is still in place and consider whether this is the kind of company you really want to do business with, or,if you are employed there, if it's the kind of company you want to work for. I heard good things about Drew James Salon and didn't think there would be such a discrepancy between locations. I bought a Groupon for roots color, scalp treatment, cut, and blow-dry. Semaj was my stylist. Super sweet, tried very hard but she must have been very new. The color did not match, the cut was terrible (think Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber). The assistant manager was able to instruct her on how to minimize the damage but I left looking like an idiot. read more

Stay away! Don't waste your time or your money or suffer heartache like I have of losing my hair to this place. Sorry to say I tried two hairdressers here and both bleached over my already processed blond hair when I asked them to just do the roots only. They overbook the stylists so the stylists do a rush job and don't care about you or your hair and just pour chemicals all over your hair and break it off. They just wanna get you in and out and see you as a a dollar sign. There are too many salons around...don't take a chance and go to this one if you wanna keep your hair. read more

I recently had my hair colored and styled by Estephanie. She always does a great job! She is very efficient and makes me feel comfortable. I have had some health issues causing problems with my hair. I'm always sorry to post a low review but I must in this case. I'm not bashing the salon. I'm not naming the stylist. Mistakes happen and people have bad days, and I'm sure this salon does good work. But I went in with photo illustrations of what I was looking for, and a realistic understanding of what my hair can and can't do. I was talked out of what I really wanted, saying "the upkeep would be too hard." Um...it was a curly bob. No color or anything. People get bobs all the time. I've worn them before. I am not sure what kind of upkeep the stylist meant, but we were on to plan B. I have very thick hair that I am certain is no picnic to work with. As such, I am forgiving, but I walked out with a terrible haircut. He did not dry it so I could not address it there. As it dried at home, the horror began to set in. Was it a shag? Was it a bob? No one knows. It was definitely the worst haircut I have ever had. I texted a photo of it to thee stylist, who replied, "What is wrong with it?" And here's where I lost my trust. The problem with getting a truly bad haircut (as opposed to a good haircut you don't happen to like, or one that needs tweaking) is you lose trust in the stylist. You are supposed to go back to same one for a fix, but how can you trust they will fix it if they crashed and burned on the first one? I could not go back. After wearing a hat for a few days, I went to a Deva stylist who understands curly hair, and walked out with the same cut the first stylist talked me out of, only much shorter, since the original stylist undercut SO MUCH of my hair in the back that the repairing stylist had to go very short. It's fine. It's hair. It grows. At least my Deva cut looks good! Also: I don't think Aveda products are Curly Girl safe. All my curl was gone after the wash and style. It was pure frizz. If you avoid silicones and sulfates, don't use Aveda products! I'm sure it's a fine salon. Just be careful if you have thick, curly hair. read more

Aysa does a great job and is pleasant to talk with. I usually just get a cut and blow dry, and love it every time. The staff and environment is very friendly and helpful. So disappointed. My hair cut was really bad. I told the hair stylist to do some layers in the front she only cut one layer, 2 sides unequal and she didn't even cut all other layers and she did back hair straight. That's it. I went for hair cut came back with same hair. No difference at all. I usually do layers in the hair because my hairs are so straight, I never had this kinda bad hair cut in my whole life. My experience with Heather was great! Loved my highlights. However, I did see another lady on another occasion and she did not mention exactly what texturing meant and my hair was left to feel like I had none. It meant to use a razor and basically leave me with what felt like half my hair. I was trying to just relax and not be picky and just thought she was cutting my hair. Probably my fault for not asking what "texturing" in salon language meant. read more

My husband and I had a good experience at this place, they were welcoming and gave us a date very quickly. My haircuts are very simple since I barely have any hair. But Courtney (I think that was her name) cut my husband's hair very well and styled it perfectly. He wasn't exactly the easiest client because he has so much hair, specially after spending a few months in quarantine, and he usually prefers to have his hair cut only with scissors instead of using the machine. DONT GO TO HEATHER OR TYLER!!! Didn't believe me I had asthma and the hair salon talked badly about me. Don't go there if you want to feel comfortable. I was crying and had to explain I was on chemo and steriods (60mg) to control my Crohn's disease which worsens my asthma which is severe. They were making fun of my social media and were disgustingly rude. They were only nice because they saw I was sick. Also, Tyler was rude to my mother who didn't schedule the appointment right and made a mistake. He's the one who said 2:30 and not 3pm and then reversed it and didn't apologize right away. Don't go there unless it's your last choice, it's the only reason I went cause I have an MRI this week and am moving. They're terrible people, it was a nightmare. I've o my been here once... I hate looking for a stylist and have had no luck recently at any of the places I've gone to. I saw Courtney here and I hope she doesn't quit or change locations any time soon- because that's who I will be going to see from now on. You can tell that she knows what she is doing. I give awful directions to people when they ask me how I want my hair cut... I don't know what I want. I just k ow that I like my hair to be blended well and not look like it was cut by a blind 4 year old. Courtney is very, very good. I've been to this salon several times but today was the last straw. I always saw Lyn because she was said to be good with blonde hair. Before I called the first visit they told me the amount but when I went to pay it increased $50 without my consent because the hair dresser never talked prices with me. I kept going to her and recently she did a horrible job own my full head of highlights. She didn't actually cover my hair and the color was brassy and it didn't cover my roots. I went back because they said she could fix it for free within the week. - she did the bare minimum. Reluctantly I went back yesterday to get a hair cut and full head of highlights. Wow what a huge mistake. After she finished the highlights she went in for the haircut. I showed her a video of exactly what I wanted and let her know I wanted it shoulder length which was basically what I already had and I wanted it blunt. we talked a little about the styling and asked me if I trusted her and I said yes. She cut my hair before and it was good. I thought I was as clear as possible. I felt like she was in a rush and I kept showing the video to her and I just kept seeing her chop it off. As soon as she was done I knew I was going to hate it. She thinned out my hair so badly. Who in the world wants thin hair? Instead of a blunt cut she gave me layers and a bob with choppy hair circa 1999. I paid and left because I just wanted to get out before I bursted into tears. As soon as I got home I called the salon to make a complaint. The people at the front desk were awful to me. They basically said they could do anything for me and if I wanted to fix the color it would have to be the same person to fix it. Why in the world would I go to the same person who destroyed my hair??? I called back and ask for my money back which I now have to buy extensions to cover up her mistake. The AWFUL associate said "it's just hair, it will grow back" honestly how can some one who works in the beauty industry who is in the business of making people feel their best say something like that? And although hair does grow back that isn't true for everyone and so many people suffer from hair loss. Honestly they should all be fired. They are awful and have no regard for customer service. Mari is by far the stylist you want cutting and coloring your hair. Before I let her color my hair, I saw her 3 times before for a cut. I felt that if she LISTENED to me about what I wanted, then we could go on to coloring. I have come across stylists that say they will do as you want then end up cutting what THEY seem to think it is. Not with Mari! She listens and follows YOUR ideas completely. My color is perfectly matched to what I wanted. She is attentive and has a good sense of style. She is good humored too! I will continue to see her. The place is ALWAYS clean and the staff adheres to Covid safety protocol. What more do you need! read more

A friend of mine recommended this salon to me, I naturally have very dark brown almost black hair. I decided to make the translation to light hair after many years and was super nervous about it, I knew my hair most likely wouldn't get as light as I wanted in the first session but it ended up coming out almost exactly the way I hoped for. All I have to say is "MARI, MARI, MARI!". I came here for the first time today without having ever gotten my hair professionally colored and I'm officially hooked. I had no idea what I wanted going in, and Mari took the reins and we FLEW. I am now a beautiful blonde! I came from NY for a wedding and this place was able to accommodate all 8 of my family members at the same time. They were super understanding about why were late to our appointment (because we had just come from the wedding ceremony) and took us in without any problems. I've never in my entire life felt so relaxed at a hair salon! All the staff were extremely friendly and sociable having just met us. While the stylist was blow drying my hair, I felt like I could fall asleep in that chair, something I've never felt about any stylist I've experienced! In NY most stylists tug at your hair while they blow dry, which I thought was normal until I came here! The blowout/styling was smooth, and my curls stayed put as I danced the night away. Mediocre not an aveda experience. Sloppy hair color left stains all over my wife face the ears, forehead and side brows. She did not realize, but we did when she arrived home. She called and their answer was to removed with rubbing alcohol. This salon is lame, we paid over 200 dollars for stains on the skin and bad treatment. read more

I was lucky enough to grab a Groupon for this place, I am pretty faithful to Aveeda salons since they've saved me from hair disasters while maintaining the integrity of my hair. This salon was no different the service checking in was great, my mother was in the hospital so my spirits weren't the best. These women put a smile on my face and got to work on my hair. Alicia colored my hair, the exact color I asked for a very dark red-free brown. She was courteous and made sure to cover all of my at home screw ups lol. As for my phenomenal hair cut, I have Rebecca to thank to for that. It's hard to explain (for some), but I also come to a salon for the people, if they are professional and make me feel at home I'm going to be back there. Rebecca cut my hair EXACTLY how I wanted it, and styled it incredibly. She also was so great at listening to the fact that I wanted to keep as much length as possible. Very Disappointed. I went in and was sat with Autumn in Hollywood to get a balayage and a hair cut. The hair cut was so bad it makes my hair look thicker and the balayage was so horrible that i look like I have blond stripes in the middle and dark on the sides. I cant even wear my hair in a ponytail it looks horrible. When I called to complain (because it was a lot of money) for a job i'm 100% unhappy with I was told the only thing they can do is try and "fix it" and i said the last thing I want is for my hair to be touched again by your place. Also, I have curly hair and the combing through my hair was so painful. I said ouch like 4 times and the other times I just gave up. Horrible job!!! I will never go there again. And I appreciated the little touches of asking if I wanted coffee, and receiving a fresh warm towel after my shampoo. The entire salon is bright and friendly.
