I admit openly and shamelessly to being a coffee snob the way some folks are wine snobs (I call them wineauxs) and I spend my coffee dollars wisely. This little shop on Ocean Isle Beach really has something special going and though several friends have suggested it for months I just got a chance to go today, and at the worst time, around noon-ish, a slow time, which means the coffee, if it's still on from earlier in the morning, is pretty much wrecked by this time of day, at least that's how it seems with the bigger coffee houses. I was pleasantly surprised to find the owner who also is, in my estimation, the consummate barista, friendly as can be, and offered to hand-brew anything I wanted off the menu. That's the sort of service and attention that it takes these days to compete in any niche market and I must say, I only see good things coming for these folks as long as they stay the course and find a way to make it through the off-season (it's in a tourist area that only sees major traffic for half the year), and the smart money is that they will do just that. I had a hand-brewed/dripped black of the Organic Sea Turtle Blend, their featured bean, and a darned good one, light acid, overtly smooth on the finish, perfect for those who like something a bit less vicious than dark roasts. The clincher for my trying that one is that they donate X-number of percentage to the local Sea Turtle hospital and that won me over so well that I bought the whole bag. Yes, I would recommend this place to others, you bet. Premium coffee well pulled and poured is at a premium in these parts and it's nice to know they're not far down the road. I didn't try any of the foodstuffs but they looked interesting and I've included a shot of their menu in my Yelp photos. My husband is the coffee lover in our family and enjoys a good cup of flavorful coffee. He fell in love with the Americana coffee and we visited multiple times during our stay at Ocean Isle. Myself, I admit that I am a tea snob. Nothing but the best, flavorful, loose leaf teas from England will do for me. However, I gave their tea a try. It is looseleaf tea bags and Earl Gray blend from a Canadian based company. I give the tea 4stars as it was quite flavorful and not very bitter at all! Pleasantly surprised. read more

The only curious thing was that when ordering my avocado toast they said they ran out of poached eggs, but I could have a fried egg on top, not sure how that made sense because if you have eggs to fry wouldn't you have eggs to poach? This cute little coffee shop was located minutes from our beach rental property. When I first arrived I wasn't expecting much based on what the place looked like from the outside. It is located on the second floor. When I walked in I was pleasantly surprised. I wish I discovered this place a bit sooner. It seems like a really cool hang out/study spot. I loved the decor and the simplicity of the menu. I usually get overwhelmed if there are too many options. I ordered a triple berry smoothie. It wasn't absolutely amazing but it was refreshing. I was a little disappointed with the price. It was $6. Next time I am in town I would like to actually order a coffee. The other drinks on the menu seemed to be decently priced. read more

I only wish I had found Drift sooner during my week at Ocean Isle. A really cute coffee shop in the heart of Ocean Isle (almost hidden!). I've been coming for six years and just found Drift yesterday. Will definitely be back next year. I love the iced black Amber (espresso with almond milk - in my case - and agave) and avocado toast topped with a fried egg (you can also get poached). I love to grab a quick breakfast and coffee and read during the early hours while at the beach. I've finally found a cute spot to do both in ocean isle! Be patient because it's worth the wait. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food and drinks are absolutely delicious. We'll be back...again...and again. We ordered the avocado smash with tomatoes and egg. You can have a fried egg or a poached egg. You can also have gluten-free bread, which made this choice my absolute fav. We also had the ham, egg and cheddar toasty. It's similar to a panini and is delicious. The cold brew iced coffee was strong, which is my preference. It's difficult to find a Starbucks-like coffee/espresso in the area, so this place is my new fav coffee place at the beach too. We also had a chocolate chip cookie, which was devoured as we waited for the main food. Hey, you only live once, so when we enjoy dessert first, it's a good thing. ;) My only concern about Drift is that it won't stick around for years to come. Love it here. Solid 3.5 bordering 4 stars. This place was right next to our rented beach house so it was the easiest place to frequent during our weekend stay (and we did frequent it often). Not sure if there are any other competitive coffee shops around so it's difficult to say it's the best around when it is literally the only thing around, get my drift (heh!) ? I will say the drinks are enjoyable, but the food is just okay, and everything is slightly more expensive that it should be. Atmosphere: Spacious.Order at the front and if you decide to eat in they bring you the food (depending on if it's busy, if it is they call your name and you pick it up from the kitchen window). I enjoyed their iced mocha with almond milk. It had a strong mocha taste and it wasn't too sweet. The strawberry banana smoothies was also blended well and had a good balance of the two fruit, and wasn't overpowered by sugar. My partner tried both the caramel and vanilla lattes, and we both agreed that the caramel was more flavorful. I will say that I 100% enjoyed the ham and cheese scones that they toast for you. Delicious and filled with yummy herbs and seasoning. I also tried the banana bread with ricotta and honey. The ricotta was a little lacking in ricotta flavor (if that makes sense) and it seemed to only add a different texture to the softness of the banana bread. The sandwiches (specifically the turkey and avocado) are standard and nothing to write home about, and they come with tortilla chips that taste like they're mission brand. The plates are upwards of $7 and the drinks range from $5-7 so it all adds up. Service: Friendly. read more

So lol when I write a review you know it's pretty bad. I went with a friend to try some light breakfast since we heard it was good. We ordered around 9am and didn't get served or any notification until 9:30am. I went up to ask what was wrong to the cook and they said "I never got your order" so I went the the cashier who was kinda distance with us and he said "oh I forgot". So we waited for 45 mins for our food and never got an compensation or apology. On top of that our food was somewHat bland and we had to ask for salt and hot sauce. When we waited to ask the cashier he said "uh hot sauce?? The other customers are using the bottle". And for that I asked if they had an extra bottles or to give me a small side of Hot sauce and he said "no. But I have a packet from my car I can grab." I deadass had to leave and say no thank you it's okay. That's so disgusting for a person to offer to get a random hot sauce packet they got from another franchise that's been who knows how lonG it's been sitting in their car. And the whole time the cashier looked at me and my friend weirdly. I'm not sure if it was because we weren't white and people of color, he just didn't like us, or racist but that's how we perceived it. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone and especially people of color!! Service too long as the cashier didn't care to place our order, poor management and training of this employees to offer hot sauce from their car, or just the staff judging us. My husband and I came to OIB for the week and came to Drift this morning for some caffeine and a little something to eat. We were blown away by the friendly customer service, delicious drinks (with oat milk!) and food options. I got the iced latte with oat milk and he got the iced coffee with oat milk. Super yummy. To eat, I got the avocado smash with added tomatoes and it was the perfect blend of something healthy to eat in the morning. My husband got the banana bread with the ricotta cheese on top. I wanted to enjoy Drift so much more than I did given all the great reviews on Yelp, however I can't say this place is worth the money regarding their coffee (did not order food). In my opinion it was well overpriced for the flavor, and feel that it's also overpriced due to its location. On my visit, 2 sugar containers were left empty, only cream to choose from, and although only a few customers in there at 1 pm, still took 4-6 minutes to get my iced coffee. For the location and taste of the coffee, this place is definitely a five star for Ocean Isle Beach. There is literally no direct competition at this beach, so they've got a monopoly on what they're selling. I wasn't sure if it was going to be the lack of competition that has given them good stars, but I can assure you it's not. Drift is a breath of fresh air (and it's not because it's located close to the ocean!) Just walking into the second floor location I immediately felt relaxed in the clean and inviting shop. Lovely couches, an inviting wooden counter and glass cases. We ordered an iced chai and iced coffee. I'd skip the iced chai next time, it was a little too sweet for me, but I also was comparing it to the coffee which I LOVED! The iced coffee took the cake though, it was some of the smoothest coffee I've ever tasted and almost tasted naturally sweet, is that possible?! I don't even like sweet coffee but something about this made my mouth water. I need to start going to Joe Van Gogh's more often, they're located right here in Durham and I don't think I've ever been there for an iced coffee. Definitely worth a visit if you're a coffee lover and looking for a treat for the beach! read more
