Du Bu Gong Bang is a tofu restaurant. "Du Bu" is "tofu" in Korean. So they specialize in tofu. Their gimmick is they make all their tofu fresh in house. So you get to taste some fresh tofu. The place looks large inside. It is designed to accommodate a large amount of people. It has the typical, factory, grey, minimalist look that every modern restaurant is going for these days. They have a tree in the middle to add as an accent to the minimalism and grayness. When you walk in, you automatically get Hot Barley Tea. They don't give you cold water unless you ask. They also give you a minimal amount of banchan from your typical kimchis, marinated roots, and others. They also give you cabbage with some doenjang sauce to dip it in. All the silverware is in a drawer on the side of the table, like most modern, Korean restaurants do these days. Since they're a tofu restaurant, they have all the Korean tofu dishes: Soon Dubu and Dubu kimchis. Most foodie people should know about Soon Dubu. It's your typical Korean stew with soft tofu. Well, in this restaurant, the tofu is all the same, they don't seem to differentiate between soft or firm. They probably hand make a huge batch and use the same tofu for all dishes. Unlike other Soon Dubu restaurants, you don't choose spicy level. They have different stews with their own spicy levels. For example, their "Plain Soon Dubu" is indeed plain. It is a clean, refreshing Soon Dubu that comes out bland. They give you a soy sauce based sauce to flavor it. I think it's a dipping sauce for the tofu. Their Spicy Oyster Soon Dubu is the opposite. It comes out heavily flavored and is salty and spicy. The oysters are fresh and plump. The Soon Dubu comes out piping hot. It takes a long time to cool down. It's like drinking lava. The hot tea they give you doesn't help. Also, you have the option to order the rice in a hot stone bowl. And that rice is a billion degrees too. They love everything to be scalding. The other tofu option is the dubu kimchis. They have one that is just tofu and kimchi, with pork, or with squid. I typically like the Pork version. And their version is solid. It's one of my favorite traditional Korean dish. It comes on a hot plate. It has flavorful kimchi and its juices, mixed with the fat from the pork that you can smear the tofu in. I like it better than the squid version because of the delicious rendered pork fat. Their fresh tofu does indeed taste good. I thought it was just a gimmick, but you can taste the freshness. It's also very heavy. The tofu are bricks. You'll be full. For their non tofu dishes, the seafood pancake is excellent. The pancake comes nice and crispy and the seafood is fresh and delicious. It's also huge. For summer only, they have Kongguksu. It's cold soy milk noodle soup. I'm sure the soy broth is made in house. It taste great and refreshing on a summer day. It's one of our favorites to get here. The portions are big. Even though the price is a bit on the higher side (what restaurant isn't these days?), I feel it's a decent value due to the amount of food you get. This place is popping as one of the newest tofu soup spots in Duluth. This shopping plaza may be the best Asian food plaza with this new addition as well as chubby cattle. As such parking was a PIA, it's incredible how empty (cause it's large) this parking lot was prior to these openings as well as Teso life. I came here on a Saturday and there was a 10 min wait. The inside is beautiful filled with fake plants and wood decor to flow. It does not feel like a tofu soup restaurant on the inside which was a nice change. They make their own tofu which tasted pretty good although it's grainy looking it was firm and savory. My girlfriend ordered the spicy seafood it was a mild spice level but she was grumpy they forgot the oysters. The tofu soups were good the galbi was great. I think overall I give them a 3.5 because of the oysters and because the banchan was so weak... The banchan included cabbage (soybean), cabbage (kimchi), cabbage (leaf), peanuts and something else I forget the name. I've always appreciated a well diversified banchan plating. I wasn't sure if I would return, but we decided to give it another try and enjoyed it significantly more. I got plain last time so my daughter could have some tofu, but decided to go with spicy kimchi tofu soup this time around; it was way more flavorful compared to plain. Plain didn't even seem to use broth(?) as it didn't have much, if any, flavor and we were given soy sauce to season it with. Spicy kimchi tofu was delicious and I did eat the entire dish (in 2 sittings), but I think there was a bit less tofu compared to plain, probably replaced by kimchi. The spicy pork dish was also very flavorful! I'm don't know if it's because it's no longer grand opening, or if it was because we came at 2:45pm, or because we ordered the "right" dishes that fit our tastes, but I enjoyed it a lot. Both dishes were great. The service was good, but the issues I stated before regarding the language barrier continues to be an issue. Now let's talk about the food; this isn't your average tofu soup restaurant that we are all use to GA. They have limited toppings for their tofu soups and you can't change the spice level either. With that said, the food was really good. The seafood pancake was thin, crispy, and packed with seafood. We also got the spicy seafood tofu soup, spicy oyster tofu soup, and oyster seaweed tofu soup. All 3 were super flavorful without being too spicy or salty. I was afraid the oyster seaweed one would be too fishy but it's not at all! Also, the tofu texture is not silky, but rather lumpy? But in a good way! It soaks up all the flavor of the soup and it just melts in your mouth. The LA galbi was so well marinated and delicious. My mom and I stopped by here for lunch on Thursday and were blown away by the hospitality and kindness of everyone here! The interior of the restaurant itself is quite surprising, though it seems small on the outside, it's quite spacious. To start, we had a seafood pancake (small)- unlike other Korean restaurants we've visited, this pancake isn't too flat nor too greasy to the point it feels as though your mouth is saturated in oil. The seafood itself in the pancake was plentiful so I'd highly recommend this! Small was more than enough to satisfy two people! For our main dishes, I had the perilla mushroom soup- it was quite savory and fragrant with perilla, the tofu itself was broken up but because it's made in house, you can truly taste how freshly made tofu is. On the other hand, my mom ordered the oyster seaweed soup which had a strong but not too overwhelming umami flavor- she described it as quite refreshing and light on the stomach. To accompany the soups, they also gave a wonderful serving of scorched rice on the side. Outside of our appetizers and soups, the side dishes themselves were in my opinion also one of the major highlights here! To end off the meal, they also give you Yakult :). The service was so bad, it was almost comedic. Our party of 5 was sat and put our order in around 6:30 PM on a Wednesday evening. Our entrée didn't get to our table until 8 PM and was constantly asked "Is everything okay?" while we waited with no entrée at our table. I've been wanting to try this place for a while and finally went for lunch with my husband. Wow! First, it's beautiful inside and provides a lovely ambience. Second, this is some of the best fried tofu I've had, and the soondubu is also thicker and very hearty. I don't think there are any other restaurants in the arra that offer the thistle rice so that was a nice treat. The service was very attentive and smooth, even though we came during a food inspection! Lastly, the ssamjang is the best I've ever tasted in my entire life! Absolutely love the layout and decor. It's efficient, modern, and pleasing to the eye. There is plenty of space between tables so it isn't cramped like some places. The waitstaff was very attentive and helpful, but not annoyingly so. After placing the order for a spicy seafood soon dubu the banchan arrived. The server also pointed out that spoons, chopsticks, and napkins are in a drawer at each table. That's another nice touch that newly opened restaurants are offering. Drop your spoon? No worries. Grab another one yourself. The tofu is made daily here and they don't press it. It looked like a scrambled egg or feta cheese in the bowl. Irregularly shaped and kind of crumbly. The texture was great and the broth had all these little pockets to cling to. I definitely would have appreciated tofu more if my first experience was with this texture. They have an extensive menu and they serve house made tofu dishes. We ordered the tofu soup with mackerel combo, and seafood pancake. We also upgraded our rice to the traditional pot rice. We also got an assortment of side dishes. The seafood pancake was packed with seafood and green onion, but I thought it was a little too thin. The tofu soup was great and had lots of tofu! It was literally filled to the brim with tofu and you could definitely taste the freshness. I do prefer soft tofu but the firm tofu provided a great layer of texture. I also enjoyed the pot rice, there was a layer of spinach and it added a great flavor to the rice. The mackerel however was a little small in my opinion but still pretty flavorful. Overall, I would come back again to enjoy the tofu soup. This establishment is still pretty new so be mindful of the service. Yet another amazing experience at Du Bu Gong Bang. I came back for lunch on Saturday and we waited around 10 min for a table. It was busy!! (Also be prepared to have to circle around a few times to find parking) We ordered the vegan tofu dumplings (very good, but we kind of wished we got the kimchi pancake with squid), the perilla soon dubu, dubu with spicy pork, and taiyaki for dessert. The portions are huge, you will definitely have leftovers and maybe split one dish between two or three people. I love restaurants that specialize in a type of food, and Du Bu Gong Bang really does tofu so well. The texture may be off-putting for some people, since homemade tofu is more mushy and grainy, but I loved the taste of it. I was curious about seared black sesame tofu too, but it was actually delicious. All the flavors were light, and I feel like I could eat it everyday. A good homecooked meal. The stew was interesting and definitely the most mushy of the items we got, but I'm glad I got to try it still. Being vegetarian as well, I appreciate the variety of vegetarian offerings available. The location is at run down shopping center, but the interior of the place has a modern city atmosphere which the concept of the food does not match well. We ordered two soondubu combos. One with a grilled fish and other one with a jeyukbokeum, the matter is the main food what is soondubu. The server must have forgotten my order. Grilled fish looked cooled down and even there were no taste on main dish that was the worst food I experienced in decades. I am not sure why many people praise about this place. My husband and I enjoyed dinner here. We arrived around 6pm on a Friday night and were seated immediately. The decor and atmosphere is modern chic while still approachable. Plenty of lighting and high ceilings, industrial with greenery. Service is traditional Korean style, where they give you plenty of space and don't check in too often, which we are fine with. The food was quite tasty, fun to eat and presented beautifully. Everything was good, but the oysters in the seafood spicy tofu soup directly impressed us. We also noted the rice was well cooked and enjoyed it being served in the hot pots. All ingredients were high quality. Portions were generous We live in Duluth and enjoy trying new restaurants in the area.
