I've been in Seattle for about two years and Duchess Tavern has the best pizza I've encountered in that time. In a bar I was almost expecting a frozen pizza but it was freshly assembled and seemed to use quality ingredients. My only small complaint is that the pizza took about a half hour to make it to our table. Not a huge deal as they seemed busy, but the also only had one guy doing all the cooking. The beer selection looked pretty solid and there is a whole room of pool tables and some other bar games. And, they're dog friendly! Overall, it's just a very average bar with very average bar food (read subpar). Duchess is located right next to a home supply brew store which ironically does not encourage a more exotic beer selection. This is a place for locals, older UW students and recent grads who have stayed in the area. For regulars it gives off a familiar hometown bar vibe and if you're from out of town it may not be for you. The patrons are what I would expect of seattle post-msft but pre-social media boom. The Duchess is a dive bar tucked away just north of U Village in Ravenna. This place is a popular hangout for college kids during UW football games, but otherwise attracts a wide mix of patrons, including the four-legged variety. Duchess features a full menu of decent pub fare (the chicken burgers are great!) and a decent selection of local craft beers and timeless favorites (read: PBR). The lower level has a whole bunch of bar games... pool tables with purple felt, pop-a-shot, and a great, long, non-bumpered shuffleboard table. During the summer on Saturdays the bar is packed with Softball players (Sauceballers) and it can be nearly impossible to move around let alone get a drink. Speaking of which, you better play nice with the bartenders here or they will just ignore you. If you're a decent person, leave a good tip, and are not remotely douchey, you might get served with a smile. Somehow the tab always ends up being more than I expected. It is what it is. Dives will be dives. This particular dive is a beautiful one, at least insofar as dive bar beauty goes. The Duchess is NOT a 5-star dining establishment- it's a dog-friendly bar that features bar food. Self-seating, self-service, etc. Decent beers on tap. Full bar. The bar staff were older gentlemen who were very friendly- almost reminiscent of an east coast bar (Boston-ish feel). I felt welcomed and could've stayed all night had it not been for other plans. While I'll never have control over the crowd (which included a skanky hipster girl who rudely cut in front of us at the bar as well as a load of extremely loud sports fans), I liked all that the Duchess had to offer. P.S. - My pooch loved that he got to hang out with the "big kids" and join us for our night out... he was even offered a water dish and treats. read more

This is my favorite bar in Seattle. The pizzas, burgers, hot wings and fries are some of the best bar food in Seattle. The beer select (Beer Hunter List) is excellent with 40 options. If you like drinking cheap lager then you are in for a treat with multiple selections. The age range will be 21 to 81. Everyone seems to get a long even before and after Husky games when the place is rowdy. There's no wait staff so you'll need to order all food and beverage from the bar. This is as close as Seattle gets to Cheers. I see the same people anytime I go in there. It is not, however, the right spot for me on Saturday night, and so you won't see me there again. I may venture back on a weeknight when I suspect the bar is filled with local neighborhood folk, and not drunk frat-like boys who were jostling to get at the bar and spilling beer everywhere. Decent bar, lots of space and gotta love the pool tables and shuffle board in there too. I had no idea but this place is "DOG FRIENDLY" like literally, not just because it is a UW husky bar. I dont think I would ever bring my pup in here but it is good to know I guess. What a great dive bar! Tons of tv screens to watch the games and it just has a relaxed atmosphere. The place can obviously get quite packed when UW is playing, but that adds excitement. Staff is friendly, tons of beer to choose from and the food is pretty decent. I love how they call your food order. So classy! The wings are pretty darn good. Hard to find a good wing spot in Seattle that also has a good vibe. This is the place and the wing sauce is PERFECT! Good crispy fries too. Yum. I kneel before Duchess Tavern for showing me a fun, casual dive to grab a beer with a couple of friends. Granted that the bar will probably be filled with loud, college crazies, but I think that adds more than takes away from the environment. There may be people down the table chugging pitchers and downing shots, but if you get over the rowdiness of it all, it's actually pretty fun to see the wide variety of people in the bar. Speaking of a wide variety of people, Al from Tool Time from Home Improvement was in the house. He looks exactly the same, sporting the same exact beard, and the same exact wardrobe. The only thing missing was his tool belt. Drunk guys and gals alike were taking pictures with him all night long. He seems like a nice guy, but he was definitely squeezing in a feel every once in a while. The girls didn't seem to mind though, probably because they were too busy throwing themselves onto him. A drunk old guy, who seemed to also be an employee or owner of the place, recounted how "close" of a relationship he has with Al. I think he told us that story about four or five times. Classic. Not only will you see a wide variety of people, but you'll also see a wide variety of beers on tap, including Blue Moon and Mac & Jack, which is all I really need to unwind on a weekend. The rest of their selection is great, and their pitchers are a pretty good deal. All the food that came out of the bar looked good, but I didn't order any because I was busy filling up on beer. First off, this is a bar. Not an upscale restaurant where the waitstaff is at your feet asking if they can serve you. This is a hands on, do it yourself kind of place. It has survived the sands of time. The Duchess is a Husky Landmark. Did I say that this is a bar? Dont expect fine dining, expect greasy bar food. Great big gobs of greasy bar food. The fries are crispy and delicious. The fish is golden brown and fried to perfection. The pizza looked pretty damned good, I plan on trying it next time we go in. The burger that I saw go out looked damned good. They call out your name over a muffled PA system that is hard to understand sometimes. Especially later at night. You serve yourself, pick it up at the counter. Dont expect someone to walk around asking you for a drink order or clearing your table, you do the work yourself. Once again, this is a bar. The beer is relatively cheap and they have a decent list of beers available. Ranging from tap to can, $2.25 - around $5 if I recall correctly. But who needs the high end stuff when you are throwing down greasy food. Just toss back a few Rainiers or PBRs (both $2.25) and call it a night! Dogs are welcome! Yes, it's a dive bar/sports bar and is kind of run down, but it has really good personality....mean that it has a surprising substantive beer menu, good food options, and friendly bar service. Great for watching Husky games! I've never been here except to watch a game. They get most all of the Husky Basketball and Football games and it is a nice place where a lot of fans get together and root and cheer for the dawgs. The food and drink prices are reasonable. The Duchess is a staple UW dive bar. Since my parents live around the corner I go there whenever I'm home however it's not my first choice to drink at. The upsides are a solid, local heavy, tap list. Big TVs in the main room always showing sports. Three pool tables, shuffle board, and pop-a-shot basketball. Tons of UW football memorabilia on the walls. This is one of the better places to go watch a husky game. The downsides are the price of beer, a bit too high for a dive bar, the general mustiness of the whole bar, and the bathrooms with one of the weirdest half door bathroom stalls anywhere. Also, keep in mind what you're getting into, if the school year is in this place will be packed with students to the point it becomes standing room only. The last time I went was before the school year started and it made for a nice evening. Just be prepared. read more

Fun, relaxed place to hang out with friends, watch the game and have a few drinks. The crowd is usually fun and friendly, and the staff are great. I had a big party here last fall and it was the perfect spot for entertaining. They let me reserve part of the bar for free, and they have something for everyone: pool tables, shuffle board, darts and big screen TVs. The food is typical bar food (burgers, fries, etc) but its good quality and I believe you can even get some salmon. It's off the Ave so the frat boy content is relatively low, but the Husky memorabilia gives it charm. read more

Went here on a weeknight with some friends cause our regular bar had closed shop. Things seem a bit pricier here: 4.50 for a beer. not bad, but I've found cheaper. We are in the younger group, 22, and the other people seemed quite a bit older. Didn't feel super welcome, which is dumb because this is basically in the university district. Bartender was sort of brief with us. Upside is they do have some games here,like pool and darts. I think a shuffleboard too. Also, they allow dogs inside, which is cool. The Duchess is a great place to go if you go to the University of Washington and want to avoid the AVE, and the kind of chain restaurant feeling of The Ram. It's got a million tvs, big tables, shuffleboard,a jukebox, bouncers who remember who you are after only having been there ONCE, a pool table, UW paraphanalia EVERYWHERE, and a very good selection of good AND bad beer -- there's something for everyone. I'm hesitant to review The Duchess because it's my favorite neighborhood gem, but it's only fair that others know. This bar somehow manages to be low-key and high-energy all at the same time. Watch out for the angry cook! I thought I found the perfect dive bar in my neighborhood. We love dive bars and this one allows dogs. Sure, the food is previously frozen, dry, over-salted and greasy, but they have my favorite local beer, Mac and Jacks. On Tuesday, 5/31/2011 my husband and I were almost assaulted by their ridiculously angry cook . Our little dachshund got tangled under the table so we unleashed him for a second. As we leave, the angry cook stares us down and tells my husband he could be banned for life for unleashing our dog. What? huh? I ask him what the problem is and he says my dog was unleashed and my husband didn't turn around to talk to him when he was shouting at my husband's back to leash him. I tell him that my husband is DEAF and we will never be back. He shouts, " Good! Don't come back!" Anger management problems? YES. The fact that the Duchess employs this guy speaks volumes about management here. I also couldn't help notice we were the only inter-racial couple in the entire bar and I was the only non-white person. He mostly yelled at me. Did that factor into his hostility towards us? perhaps, but I don't care to find out. read more
