Generally I don't get too annoyed at service but I placed my order the day before since we were leaving Asheville this morning to pick up on our way out for 11:00am. Since it's a small place I was trying to wait until exactly then to go in to get them. Walked in and the girl told me they had got busy and forgot my order when it was taped up with the rest of them. Four groups came in and out before they even started working on mine and I was made to wait another 10 minutes after my pick up time. Not how I normally would think things should go. Maybe might try them again since they didn't make them sloppy as long as service isn't the same. I did at least get an apology. read more

This is the best place in town to get good doughnuts but there hours suck! You can never get in there when they are open. I spoke to the Winston sales store and they are running more normal hours! I don't see how they stay in business closing at 1 o'clock on a Monday through Thursday! We've been to the original Duck Donuts location in Duck, NC, on the northern Outer Banks. They now have several other locations on the Outer Banks and have begun franchising. I believe they now have more than 40 locations. In September 2017, they opened in Asheville, in part of the shopping complex that includes Harris Teeter, AAA, Chick Fil a and other retailers. I believe it's in the same building as the new Five Guys. We tried it today, a few day before their official grand opening. Their concept is a little hard to explain. They make the basic donuts in advance, which are a kind of light cake donut. Then you choose the flavoring (cinnamon, sugar, whatever) plus toppings (for example, sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles, bacon, graham crackers, etc.) and glaze drippings. We got a half dozen of their donuts ($7.50 plus tax). Service was friendly, despite the fact that the little shop was jammed. The problem was that Duck at this location doesn't seem to have its systems down yet. You go in and order, but unless you already know the options you probably will be confused. Signs are small and hard to read. There are plasticized sheets that explain the various combinations, plus forms you can fill out with the kinds of donuts, toppings, glazes, etc. you want, but these are not placed where you can get easily them when you come in. The busy cashiers really don't explain how to order. You would think that a chain that has 40+ locations would have its basic systems down pat by now. Duck has good fresh donuts, and relatively good prices, but so far the place is a little disorganized. Also, the parking directly near the store is limited, because of the way parking is arranged in that part of the strip center. On a busy day it could be hard to get in and out, as there is just entrance/exit from the parking area iin front of Duck Donuts. You could park at the side of the building or elsewhere and walk to the donut shop. It took us 23 minutes from entering the shop to walk out with our half dozen donuts. read more

Upon entry I found this place confusing. A made to order donut shop implies to me that you should sit down and enjoy it while it is hot as opposed to a fast in and out sort of deal. They don't have a drive thru which would only support this case further yet they only have like 5 tables. So I feel like I am kind of missing something here. The decorum is also bland and uninspiring. I love the fact that they make the donuts to order here and you can get excessively outrageous toppings like bacon or keylime. Some seem to think this is a bit much and it can be so its definitely not a place I could frequently visit but would enjoy it every now and then. Service was neither here nor there and I wish they had more tasty beverage options to wash down these decadent treats. Good but not great and beats Dunkin donuts any day of the week because at leat you know you won't be served something stale. read more

I am a huge fan of cake donuts. This place has absolutely mastered the art of making them. A lot of places (DD, KK, etc.) serve dense, OK-tasting cake donuts that are basically sugar bombs. Duck's are light and fluffy, served hot, and not like a sugary sponge. That's the essence; then, you add glaze, toppings, and drizzle (if you want - each is a choice), and these things are just phenomenal. Or, get 'em plain and you'll be very happy, too. Over-rated. Went to this location in Asheville NC, but we have one here in Ft Myers FL also. Don't see what all the fuss is about. They're just cake donuts, custom made. The wait is too long, and they weren't this "oh my god" super delicious, never had anything like it donut. (Have you been to Bennetts in Ft Myers). We're in town from California visiting family and were told this was a must stop. We were not disappointed!! The coffee is the best coffee I've ever had and I used to work in high end coffee shops. It's the perfect medium roast and had the slightest sweetness to perfect it. I don't like sweet coffee but it's delicious. And the donuts were amazing!!! So many donuts to enjoy, so little time! I stumbled upon this gem because it opened up right next to European Wax Center, where I go to get my eyebrows done. I arrived about 20 minutes early due to my errand running being a little ahead of schedule. I looked over and thought, "Coffee and a donut? Why not?" Headed inside and there was a bit of a line. I didn't realize they had just opened officially the day before, so there were lots of people excited to try it out. You can grab a menu and pencil and start on your order so it's finished by the time you get to the front. Very efficient! Unfortunately with the staff being so new they were having trouble keeping up. When I got to the front I decided to get a two donut combo with coffee. I picked out one of their specialty donuts to take home to bf (Oreo donut!) and I made one for myself. You can choose from such a variety of toppings! I made a donut with lemon frosting and a raspberry drizzle which I thought was very original...until I came to the front and realized they already had a specialty donut with those toppings called the Sunrise donut. Haha, well great minds right? Just an FYI, these donuts are cake donuts! They don't taste like your average Krispy Kreme! So soft and dense and delicious and MADE FRESH! I dare say these donuts are the best donuts I've tried here in Asheville so far (and that includes Vortex!). The coffee wasn't anything too special, but I'll definitely be back for a box of these bad boys when the sweet tooth craving strikes! read more

Love duck donuts and was super excited to see them come to Asheville. Wish the location had a little more seating so you could sit and enjoy your donuts and coffee. Although it is small it is still a great environment and consistent with the other duck donuts locations. We visited here the first week and I am sure it's because the staff was still learning but about half of our order was messed up. They seemed hesitant to fix it, as they gave us "beach balls" instead of "the beach. They eventually made the order correct and the donuts were delicious as usual. I appreciate that they came warm and obviously made fresh, but most of the icing was on the bottom of the box, which, from my understanding about heat and icing, means that the icing was put on the donuts immediately after they left the frier and then put directly in the box. I could be wrong, however, if I wanted plain donuts, I would have ordered plain donuts. They were pretty tasty, none the less, but a bit on the heavy side in terms of the cake. These are hands down the best donuts we've ever had. The dough is like soft cake and you can personalize the donuts any way you'd like. All of the donuts are made to order but they are made so fast you'd think they were pre-made. To be honest, we also found them very affordable, a donut at Dunkin' Donuts will cost you $1 and these are $1.40 and the quality is by far superior! We went with a few of the favorite options and it was the best choice we could've made. We ordered two maple bacons, two of the seasonal with lucky charms, a peanut butter, and a s'mores.
