I do like how hot and fresh they are, but they lose 1 star for being a chain and 1 star for being a bit too heavy for my tastes. A little chalky and not wet and gooey and doughy enough for my tastes. I am new to the area, and I was very excited to check out this place because they have cake donuts. As a vegan, cake, donuts are often pretty safe for me, and when I went in to ask if they had any vegan donuts, the girl working immediately told me no, and turned me away. I'm disappointed because our entire household is vegan and loves donuts! We had countless options in our old area, but have not been able to find anything local. My hope is that this establishment will consider adding vegan options not just for those of us that choose to be vegan but for people that have allergies toward milk and eggs. I can't reply to the business owner so I'm going to reply here. My rating is one star because this place has nothing for an entire subsect of the community. Best. Donuts. Ever. I don't need to even say anything else other than try for yourself but they're so delicious that I'll provide some details for those who haven't had the chance to experience these donuts. These things come out nice and hot, baked perfectly with just the right amount of fluffy and moist texture, the closest resemblance to a cake out of all donuts I've tried. I'm not sure how they do it, but nothing compares to it. Absolutely blown away. I highly recommend the Strawberry Shortcake, Blueberry Crumble, and Cookies & Cream flavors. Second visit on Father's Day, service was very busy and haphazard, as you would probably expect on Father's Day, so they looked terrible. After all the hype about Duck Donuts, I happened to be in the area with my mom, so we decided to drop on by and have a quick snack. There is tons of parking in the area. It wasn't terribly crowded, and we were able to order our donuts pretty quickly. The employees were helpful and friendly in answering our questions as we didn't know anything about how to order their donuts. The concept is quite unique by having the choice to the coating, toppings, and/or drizzle. The list seemed a bit overwhelming at first, but think I would be better prepared the second time to know how I would want to order :P We ended up ordering lemon icing with shredded coconut and yelp's special Five star Fried Oreo. The donuts were prepared quickly..took less than 5 minutes to get our order. The lemon icing was quite delicious and the donut was perfectly heated and soft :) The fried oreo was a bit too sweet for my taste, and drizzled with a bit too much icing. This branch used to be amazing, friendly employees and fast service. The last time I'm here, with 3 customer ( each ordering 2 donuts each) it took them 20 minutes to make our order. No one was on the cash register even though there's two employees and both employees were unfriendly and were extremely slow. Disappointing. Even my 70 year old grandma moves faster than both of the employees combined. There was no napkins in any of the napkin holders. Empty coffee pots and the restroom was in a horrible condition. Bottom line: my fiancé is a fitness fanatic with a secret sweet tooth and this place is his new obsession. As soon as you walk in to this adorable little place, you're hit with smells of wonderful gooey, high calorie goodness that's made fresh right in front of you (mesmerizing watching them dip in the icing through the glass, haha). There are some other donut places that I think are pretty great but I think Duck Donuts beats them in terms of pricing, this place is way more affordable. These hearty donuts definitely hit the spot (warm or room temperature). Use the pen and paper to jot down exactly what you want (flavor donut, icing and toppings...there are lots of options) and give it to the cashier. You can pick from the favorites or make your own. Honestly, you can't go wrong either way. This may not be the ideal place to hang out since there's really little place to sit. Because it's chaos there each time I go. There is no order to how everyone is working, the line is crazy long due to no one knowing exactly what they're suppose to be doing. If you're still deciding on combinations or have a larger order, there's an order form and pencils at the counter. They'll usually have signs up suggesting good combinations, if you're not good at that sort of thing like I am. I ordered a blueberry pancake donut for my husband, and a regular cinnamon sugar for myself. The donuts come hot and fresh if you eat them right there; I took mine home, so by the time I'd arrived, the glaze had caused the donut to melt a little. Nonetheless, it's tasty, you just need a fork or be willing to make a mess. TLDR; YES! They do live up to the hype!! I love that you can create so many different combos of donuts and their ordering process is pretty straight forward with the order sheet. They're also food allergy friendly and they can make your order in a separate area if you do have an allergy in case of cross contamination as long as you give them a heads up. Halfway into what would turn out to be a three-hour meeting with a business coach in Fairfax I knew I wanted a reward. (Ok, I knew Duck Donuts was close before the meeting started and the idea of visiting was already on my radar, but the meeting's longevity certainly helped to solidify the certainty of the deal.) I had been wanting to visit this location again. I wanted to be certain my previous wonderful experience was not just some fantasy. Well this place is for real. I ordered four donuts and spent just a little over five dollars. And these donuts are SO good, especially if they are still warm when you munch them. Because hubby and I were coming from a business meeting I dragged him in with me. Much like his first experience with &pizza his was skeptical and moaning about the line. And, much like with &pizza, I told him the line would move fast, it was worth it, and he would understand after he tried it. Guess who was right; I was (shocking I know...;-). We got a Reese, maple with bacon & coconut, strawberry with color sprinkles, & vanilla with color sprinkles. We took them out to the car, opened them up, and enjoyed ourselves for a moment, or two. These donuts are good, really good, but they are even better when they are warm. The middle was soft and the toppings were great mixed with the warm donut. What is particularly nice about these donuts is that although they are cake they are not overly heavy or dense. Although I really like the toppings the donuts themselves are really good. I am looking forward to trying the cinnamon sugar as the weather gets colder, perhaps with some warm tea. Great customer service, good system, and tasty results (plus fun duck items). This annoying guy (an alternative lifestyle person) at the front register kept trying to argue with me instead of just making me new ones. This new location opened about a month ago. Word in my hood is that it was not as crowded as the semi-established Herndon location. So.... on a Saturday morning around 10am, we took our chances and headed to Fairfax. This parking lot is always busy because of the Petco, Panera, and Party store. Adding the Duck Donuts will make parking a challenge. This morning was rainy and parking was not so bad but everyone entering the lot was out for donuts! It was a parking war. Once inside there was no line to order, but with the LARGE crowd waiting for their orders, it can get confusing. There were people lined up behind people who had already ordered. Duck Donuts is interesting in that they make an effort with every single donut. You custom order every single donut from the choices on their menu. All donuts cost the same whether you have a plain, or one with a glaze and a topping. It starts off with making the decision to have a cheat day/week/life, and have a donut or two. Then you pick from a multitude of glazes. I have eaten the regular glaze, chocolate, maple, and the cinnamon sugar. All are good, although I particularly liked the maple. It's a little different, with a nice scent and a hint of maple. Chocolate is very thick and tasty too. Then you pick toppings. Sprinkles are good, and the bacon is legit fried bacon that has been chopped into small pieces. I really like watching them dip the donuts in the warm glazes with incredible dexterity. Interestingly they have to-go boxes for as few as two donuts. Apparently they predicted that ordering a single donut was unlikely with the choices at hand. Donut itself is pillowy inside with a slightly firm/crispy exterior. Not quite as soft inside as fresh Krispy Kreme, but it's pretty close. Overall this is about as good as it gets with the exception of fresh off the conveyer Krispy Kreme glazed donuts. They will always be my number one. read more

I had been wanting to check out Duck Donuts for quite some time, but since it was out of the way for me I didn't make it there until last Sunday (Sept 30th). Decided to drop by after the Fall for Fairfax Festival. Went there after 2pm. There was a family eating at the table and the place was fairly quite. Wasn't sure what to order so I checked out their signature donuts as well as the fall flavors. Ended up ordering two donuts, vanilla icing with oreo crumbles and hot fudge drizzle and the second one, vanilla icing with salted caramel drizzle. I paid and waited for my order. This is where things went downhill. I waited for almost 15 minutes, during which time, three families came into the store placed their orders. Got their donuts, while I waited. One had ordered a dozen donuts, the other half a dozen and the third just 3 donuts. I just couldn't understand the wait, while all other after me had been served. I asked how much longer it will be and the woman behind the counter told me that these take time since they are custom made. I asked how is it possible for two donuts to take longer then the 21 donuts she just made. At that point she asked me, what my order number was and said that she never received my order. Two other staff members are looking on, none of them apologetic or even trying to acknowledge the fact that they messed up my order or that I had been waiting in the pick up area for so long. She then made my order, put it in a box. Chocolate sauce dripping from the box and said it's ready. The donuts looked sloppy and not appetizing at all. They might have tasted better had I not had to wait so long and the indifferent attitude of the staff. Even though this place has glowing reviews, for me at least customer service matters. Guilty pleasure is one way to describe my feelings when I drive past Duck Donuts. I love that the chain has done so well to become a mid-east-coast phenomenon from NC to here. Really a great chain that is consistent in quality throughout the locations. Tons of flavors and thankfully very visual menus help you pick what catches the eye, when you don't have the 'vision' to do it yourself. Their style of super-fresh donuts reminds me of the joy of the cupcake craze from the early '10s. I'm not much of a dessert person. I like Dunkin Donuts because they aren't too heavily frosted, they are cheap, they are small...and I hate Krispy Kreme. So I was skeptical about another donut shop that seemed to go heavy on the frostings and toppings that cost a bit more. I was wrong to be skeptical. This place is great. Each donut is like a meal. I like the idea of the toppings. This location usually is pretty fast and the donut makers seem to be very nice. I've been here about 5-6 times and I make sure to stop in when I'm driving by if I have time. If you are unfamiliar to Duck Donuts you are going to need 400 napkins and a shower after eating them, so keep that in mind if you are looking for a snack before a business meeting. I ate at the original location in the Outter Banks as well. I think the quality transferred pretty well. read more
