Excellent!! On each our many visits over the last several and challenging months every employee was masked and gloved. They're also pleasant and make the experience a good one. They have one employee stationed outside during peak times to control the amount of people inside. No business in any part of the country can be perfect, especially now. I've never had a doughnut this good before. Ever. Duck Donuts (another OBX local chain) bakes fresh every morning these delightful, light cake doughnuts. With a plethora of different icings and toppings (maple icing and peanut butter icing being two of my favorites), your doughnuts are topped-to-order and come to you warm and delicious. What's more, the prices are incredibly reasonable, especially for a "tourist town." For $3 you can get two hot doughnuts and a coffee (they use Kill Devil Coffee, another plus). You can't beat that! While they do not have too many tables on the inside or much in the way of decor, that's not why you come to Duck Donuts. You come for the food, and they definitely deliver in that respect. It is 97 degrees outside and after I get our donuts and iced coffee, I noticed they don't have any seating for guests. We have to walk to our car, crank on the a/c, and awkwardly eat our donuts in the car. These things are messy and I'm trying not to smear icing on my dash. We just wanted a sweet cheat treat, but it makes you start questioning what you're doing with your life when you are sitting in a running car, watching traffic go by, eating a messy donut. I try to not eat doughnuts in general anymore but I was on vacation so I was like wtf. I live in Chicago and the donut craze here is huge. So my expectations were pretty high walking in to Ducks. I have to say that Ducks Donuts is by far my favorite donut place in the WORLD. The donuts are fresh and warm, and the 3 step ordering process was a great change of pace. You pick a glaze, You pick your own toppings on the donut then end it with a drizzle. Yeah, I'm going to be that guy that says, "I don't get it." Seriously. I don't. There are many restaurants that I know of that have a cult following (like In-N-Out Burger!) and I get most of them. The line was out the door by the time we ordered and I honestly said after eating the donuts that I would be fine being 3rd or 4th in line, but there's no way I would wait in a line out the door, no matter how fast it was moving. Since you custom order the donuts, we decided to try some interesting combinations: Vanilla Donut + Peanut Butter Icing + Chocolate Sprinkles: We were going for the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup effect and it worked okay. The icing over-powered everything else, so it was more peanut butter than anything. Vanilla Donut + Cinnamon Sugar + Rainbow Sprinkles: Pretty much what you would expect from any establishment selling sprinkled and/or cinnamon sugar donuts. Nothing to rave about. Chocolate Donut + Maple Icing + Bacon: This was the "way out there" donut we tried and it was okay. Again, like the first one, the icing overpowered everything. If you take sprinkles out of the equation, you essentially have some flavored donuts with flavored icing. Whoop-de-doo! The craziest things they have are maple icing and bacon. Okay, but I'm not standing in a ridiculously long line for hot donuts that essentially taste like something I can buy at a supermarket and warm in a microwave. We asked friends of ours about "must sees and do's" in the OBX and they surely didn't disappoint. Having never been to the Outer Banks, we had never heard of Duck Donuts. Our lives were so incomplete and we had no idea. Tears. Thankfully, we are now whole and so much more the wiser. My bacon loving husband and I indulged in the maple glazed donuts with bacon topping. My Twinkies each had their share of cinnamon-sugar, glazed, strawberry glaze, and vanilla glazed and I also tasted the powdered and chocolate glazed with coconut flakes. True, true heaven. The crumb on this donut is delicate, yet substantial (how'd they do that?!?). It's a cake donut that's fried, topped and served Ford Model-T style. I can see how the store would be inundated and crowded as the assembly does take some time. We must have, inadvertently, timed it well because there was a minimal wait. I loved the attention to detail that the young man and two young women took in preparing our order as well. The store was very clean and the donuts were so hot I did the whole, "mouth-in-the-shape-of-a-hole-breathe-in-and-out-to-cool" thing. I love hot food that's actually hot. It makes me feel warm and safe inside. We also ordered a 1/2 gallon of orange juice. Very good quality orange juice, not that watered down mess. I believe the total for our entire breakfast (which everyone, save Hubby couldn't finish) was approx. $26. A bargain compared. We packed it up and headed back to our rental and ended up so satisfied. Of the two Duck Donuts we visited in the OBX (yes, two, don't judge), I preferred this location for its cleanliness, attention to detail and proximity. What do they put in these donuts that makes them so good?! Duck Donuts is a small operation, so they make their donuts pretty much to order. They have these small automated donut makers, that are fun to watch. They fill up a repository full of batter, then they flip a switch and the batter drops from the repository straight into hot grease. A conveyor belt basically moves donuts along and flips them until they eventually fall into large collection pan. Once you place your order, they apply any frosting or toppings to your donuts. All this might be interesting for one order of donuts, if this were all there was to it, but the donuts taste delicious too! What do they put in those things cocaine? HA! All varieties are on $1.20...not bad for what I consider a gourmet donut. Two donuts and coffee special for $3.50 is the way to go. Have a donut of the day as well...today was orange creamcicle. Go each morning during your vacation and try a different flavor each day. Wish had a few tables to sit inside our outside but understand the volume of customers makes this problematic.
