I was lucky enough to have dined here several months ago before the Maui fires. I pray that Duckine will have a smooth reopening and that the workers are all safe. For anyone thinking of coming here in the future, please do so because the food and service are just phenomenal. Upon entering the restaurant, we were surprised by how upscale the environment was. We originally sat at a table but were moved to the bar area in order to take advantage of their happy hour. The mocktails were so terrific that we wanted to try more but held ourselves back because we needed to save some room for dessert. I highly recommend the Coconut Pandan Lemonade. The bright green color scared me a little, but it was delish and packed some strong pandan flavor. We tried all of the bao wows options since they were just $5 each during happy hour. I appreciate how they all had their unique presentation and taste. But the best part of our meal was undoubtedly the Kaya Toast (hawaiian bread | coconut pandan jam | kona coffee ice cream marcona | ginger syrup ) The bread was deep fried, providing a nice texture that complemented the ice cream. And there was fricken coconut pandan jam in the middle of the bread too!! We were a bit worried about the ice cream being coffee flavor since we're not into coffee like that but it wasn't strong at all. The coconut pandan jam just tied everything together wonderfully. Duckine is relatively a new restaurant across the street from Mala. The ambiance is upscale and you can see the water from certain parts of the restaurant. They offer valet parking at no charge, real treat for Lahaina. Just tip the valet. Our server was Max who was very helpful and had total command of the menu. We started with the pressed duck bao followed by the pork dumplings and garlic noodles with chicken and an order of green beans. All 4 of these were really good. The pressed duck bao being the star of the 4. In addition we had the Crispy egg noodles with all kinds of veggies. The plate as delivered was basically tasteless and the crispy noodles were all fused like two nests, one on each end with a pile of stir fried veggies in the middle. We got some hot sauce and soy sauce and mixed it in the plate to soften the noodles and give it some flavor. That made it better but not good. We informed Max of our feelings on the plate and when the bill came the manager taken the Crispy noodles off our tab, class act. Thank you. A fan of Chef Alvin Savella, the Kitchen Assassin, I was excited to see that he was opening his new restaurant just across the street from where he was at, Mala's Tavern where I followed him to when he took over as Executive Chef. Of course, it was no-brainer that I would show up at Duckine at the first chance I get since I left right before he opened his own restaurant last October. A play on the Hawaiian pidgin word, Dakine, which is used to mean almost anything when you can't think of the word. You may often say "that thing", here you say Dakine. It is also used to refer to something exceptional which this lives up to. With original plans for happy hour, for 30% off small kine plates and $5 each little bao wows, it was easy to make a dinner out of it with puffed shrimp, poke, with the wagyu bao, pressed duck bao, and korobuta pork dumplings earning a second round. Spying the steamed opakapaka on the dinner menu, I had to return 3 days later before word gets out and I won't be able to get a reservation the next time around. We ordered a couple of dinner shared plates of opakapaka, the KAFC, and a full order of pressed duck baos. The opakapaka that brought me back in was served Chinese style with the Chinese sausage, similar to what I already make at home so wouldn't get this again especially since one of the pieces was too chewy. Out of all the restaurants we dined at during our 5-day visit to Maui, we unanimously agreed our #1 favorite was Duckine! Here's what we liked about it: 1. The ahi poke was very fresh and flavorful. The cuts were nice and they weren't chewy like some of the other restaurants. The flavoring was spot on, without being overwhelming in seasoning or bland in taste. We had ahi for just about every meal, so we had a lot to compare and voted Duckine's poke as the best in flavor, freshness, and cut. It's a good thing we ordered 2 bowls, otherwise we would've fought over it! 2. The drinks were just as good as they were pretty to look at. We ordered the Lilikoi Honey Mint Soda, Virgin Ube Colada, Coconut Pandan Lemonade, and Cucumber Yuzu Basil Refresher. Mine was the Lilikoi (Passionfruit) Honey Mint Soda and I loved it! It was very refreshing and had just the perfect amount of sweetness and tartness. We were all very pleased with our drinks and agreed these were our favorites compared to all the drinks we ordered at other restaurants. They were collectively the prettiest too! 3. The food. Maybe after eating Hawaiian food for so many of our meals we were craving something Asian? We really loved the creative twist to the traditional Asian dishes. Most Asian Fusion restaurants try too hard and fail at balancing the tastes among different cuisines, but Owner and Executive Chef Alvin Savella has a natural talent. He brings a playful and unique approach to Chinese-Hawaiian flavors that work! Here's what we ordered and loved: - Pressed Duck Baos: Who would have thought to press duck into a patty, lightly bread it, and then fry it? We were expecting a dried piece of duck breast in a bun, but what we got was a moist, juicy, and flavorful patty inside a soft steamed bun. The buns were soft and fluffy, an indication that they are fresh. I would prefer a little less sauce on top, but that's just me. The duck pattie was already very flavorful and didn't need the excess sauce. - Crispy Octopus Baos: What a unique idea! The octopus were thinly sliced (not too thin) and then lightly battered and fried. They had a nice crisp on the outside and were tender on the inside. - Garlic Noodles: Loved the flavor of these noodles. It's the traditional Chinese garlic noodles, but with a hint of the Hawaiian sweetness to elevate the flavor. - Fried Rice with BBQ Char Siu Pork: OK, I'm not usually a fan of rice of any kind, but boy were these good! It's the Hawaiian sweetness that gave the rice a nice boost in flavor. The char siu pork were very tender and flavorful. We ordered a lot of food and somehow managed to finish it all. The service was quick and our dishes came out a good pace. Our waitress was pretty impressed at how much we could eat, but not as impressed as we were with the food, drinks, service, and ambiance! Came here last night for dinner with the family. We had Robert as our helper through our dinning experience. I love it when people don't b.s. and tell me straight up what's amazing. Robert gave awesome suggestions and we ate like there was no tomorrow. The inside does NOT match the outside. It's very nice inside. A contemporary vibe. Very clean and well thought out space. The bathroom was also very clean which I appreciate. I can't even list all the food we had so I will hit the high lights. The bao and the dumplings wow..... knock you out good. The personal favorites for the bao was the burger bao, the crispy octopus and the crispy duck. Great drinks! They have specials at the bar but you can't beat the outdoor seating. I highly recommend the Escape which has a delightful coconut foam. This cocktail is smooth, boozy, and offers the right touch of coconut. It's not reminiscent of sun tan lotion so don't worry! If you're hungry, definitely grab a boa bun. They have $5 happy hour specials but the regular price is actually a better deal and you get three. My math could be off so double check. read more

My family loves duck, so this restaurant completely spoke to us... and I found it by chance all thanks to Google Maps! We arrived during happy hour which runs throughout the restaurant from 2:00P-5:00P. During this time, they offer 30% off small plates and $5 bao sliders. The host kindly greeted us and we requested a table near the bar area for the open-air seating which he graciously accommodated. They also have several tables out on the patio. Our waitress handed us the lunch menu* (this detail is important later) and also advised us of the HH specials. Everything looked so good with duck offered in many different forms. While my eye went straight to their "Duckine Plates", my family went for their baos and small plates. + CRISPY DUCK LEG ($18 + $2 garlic fried rice upgrade): This meal was delicious and well-balanced. The duck leg was lightly fried, leaving the skin super crisp like a chip! The meat fell right off the bone. A vegetable medley of broccolini, carrots, cabbage and mushrooms were tenderly cooked and had great flavor (maybe cooked in duck fat?). The fried rice was pretty oily, but nice and garlicky! I couldn't stop eating it. Pickled cucumbers on the plate helped cut the grease. * The lunch menu states this plate comes with a cup of egg drop soup, which I remembered as I was finishing up my meal. When I asked about this, the waitress said they stop serving it after the lunch hour which ends at 3:00. I didn't want to argue, but that is just strange. We ordered before the lunch hour ended, but they can't provide the soup because we started eating after 3:00? + PUFFED SHRIMP: These were similar to tempura shrimp except with a puffier crust. For dipping, a POG ginger sauce came on the side which was fairly sweet, but more gingery in flavor. I enjoyed this appetizer! My family members each ordered the DUCK WONTON SOUP which included several wontons in a ginger broth with scallions and chili oil. I tried one which was soft and nicely seasoned, but I couldn't pinpoint the taste of duck. They also had the PRESSED DUCK and WAGYU BURGER BAOS which they enjoyed. The wagyu burger was impeccable and had that delicious charred off-the-grill taste. The staff was kind, checked on us multiple times and also kept our waters full. Whenever my boyfriend asks if I'm hungry & I answer yes. I already know there's going to be a follow up question, where do you want to go? Which is never that easy for me to narrow down. The questions then running through my head include what is it that I'm craving this very moment? Or how far do we want to drive? Should we dine in or take out? Is the restaurant open? How busy are they? It's seriously crazy the amount of consideration that goes into play every time I'm asked to plan a food date. However, I'm thankful my parents helped save me on this one. They recently dined at this restaurant called Duckine. Not only did they say the food was good, but we'd need to go check them out for ourselves one of these days too. Which Saturday just happened to be our perfect day to go. Since we already planned on doing some shopping at the outlets. Being close enough to go eat at Duckine first, then go shopping. Not to mention I'd also get to check off trying a new restaurant off my to-do list as well. So a win-win in my book. By the time we arrived it was 3pm. We were also excited to find easy parking in their mini parking lot. Although if you haven't seen their logo yet, it's hella cute. I felt like a tourist taking pictures of everything. Every time I spotted one it was like my restaurant version of find Waldo. The first half of the restaurant was empty. So there wasn't a wait for a walk-in. It also happened to be their transition from lunch to dinner. So we made it just in time for their happy hour menu too. After sitting down, the waters & menus hit the table moments after sitting. As for our drink orders George ordered a coke, I ordered a lemon for my water, the Jah Mule & the Ube Lavender Lemonade. The lemon for my water never made it to the table. However the garnishes & flavor of my other drinks were so good I didn't care. I ordered 3 of the $5 Lil Bao Wows, the Wagyu Burger for George, the Crispy Octopus & Puffed Shrimp for me. Although after trying all three my absolute favorite was the Puffed Shrimp. That sauce was so good, my mouth is watering just thinking about it & don't get me started on those Bao buns. Seriously though so light & fluffy such a fun texture to eat. Everyone we encountered on this visit were very nice. It made our dining experience here very enjoyable & we look forward to our next. Stopped here for dinner on a whim and while the ambiance and views were lovely, the food was a bit lackluster and underwhelming for the price... We did not have reservations and were able to walk in with no wait on a weekday evening. They seated us outdoors on the patio overlooking the water which was stunning. We started with the pressed duck baos which were pretty good and probably my favorite part of the whole meal. For entrees, we shared the fried rice with char siu pork (recommended by our waiter) and the ube noodz. The char siu pork that came on top of the fried rice was okay in terms of flavor but the meat itself was super tough... Then, the ube noodz is an interesting concept but it just wasn't our cup of tea (though I generally love ube) -- the flavors didn't mesh super well together but maybe this is more of an acquired taste. read more

In addition to two yummy cocktails, we ordered the Kurabota Pork Dumplings, (HH $8.40, normally $12), Garlic Chow Mein, $14, two HH Pressed Duck Bao, $5 each, and 1 HH Crispy Octopus Bao, $5. Would not recommend this restaurant if you're trying to go somewhere for the food. Service was good and the restaurant itself felt pretty nice, so one star for that. Started with the: - duck bao - probably one of the better items I had here, but I'm a carb fiend so opinion may be biased. - kurobuta pork dumplings - dumpling was so big compared to normal dim sum dumplings. The skin and filling broke apart once I tried to pick up a piece. Taste was okay but texture was not good. Then had: - duck soup - lightly battered five spiced duck leg in a ginger broth with duck wontons. The ginger broth tasted like sesame oil and the water used to boil the bok choy. I would recommend adding some chicken bouillon or chicken broth to the soup. Had to immediately take out the duck leg so it doesn't get soggy. Duck leg was not bad. The duck wontons were not memorable at all. - garlic noodles - didn't realize you can mess up on garlic noodles. I would recommend more garlic and add a little bit of oyster sauce. - char siu pork - felt like a dry tasteless pork chop with red food coloring on the outer layer of the meat. Bok choy was flavored with sesame oil. Would recommend using some more garlic in the veggies and to add char siu flavor or any flavor for the pork chop. - roast duck - would assume this is their signature dish, but this was sub par. Only thing saving this dish is the big side of sauce it comes with. Sauce tasted like a traditional plum sauce that goes with Chinese roast duck, however, menu said it's a lilikoi hoisin sauce. Duck was dry and meat was lacking flavor. Theme of this meal: overpriced and flavorless and poorly executed food at a trendy restaurant. The Dim Summah Night's Dream experience on June 1, 2023, exceeded expectations.  I am so glad we went. The menu was creative and unlike any other dim sum.  Alvin, the Executive Chef introduced himself and BJ, the mastermind behind the menu.  This was a seven course experience. My favorites were the Fresh Catch(hamachi), Xia Zao (crispy shrimp ball), Lo Bak Go (chinese sausage). I liked that the meal started with fresh fish. The shrimp ball was crispy and larger than any other shrimp ball I've had. The chinese sausage course was flavorful and tender.  We sat family style and we were served green beans and noodles. I had to stop myself from eating both of the side dishes to be sure I could get through the seven courses. I would definitely order the green beans and noodles on our next visit.  There were 30 people there for the dining experience and the dining room was open for the regular menu. For the most part, food came out without too much of a wait. The servers were attentive in refilling drinks and clearing plates.  The server came around to each party to square up the bill. One word: No. Service was nice, so I guess they deserve something for that. The food, on the other hand-- absolutely not. We came here intrigued by the duck locomoco, and boy were we disappointed. The duck locomoco is outrageously salty. One bite of the sauce and I didn't want any more. I usually like saucy foods, but this was just way too saucy for the amount of salt! The duck itself was odd, and reminded me of candied bacon. Not for me. We also tried the kurabuta pork dumpling, which was basically a siu mai. Not great. At least it wasn't super salty. Egg drop soup tasted kind of like a pho broth, but not really. Not my favorite. Duck baos were also pretty salty, but thankfully not totally doused in sauce. Basic buns. They were okay. Lastly, we got half a duck. Not too much flavor there, but the plum sauce it came with saved it. There was a decent amount of meat, i'll give it that. I really don't understand all the five star ratings. This place seemed so promising, but it was just salty food that was plated nicely. This restaurant replaced the former Fu Lin Chinese Restaurant in Lahaina. It has indoor and outdoor open air seating. During the day, you can park in their lot. After 4 p.m., you need to valet. Their duck and wagyu burgers are served on three steamed buns. Their some nice steamed fish and other prepared food dishes. (Their pressed duck is not served with buns.) Their servings are large, and the menu is a huge value. For presentation, taste, and value, Duckine is a great option for lunch or dinner. read more

We ordered the pork dumplings, squid ink congee, and duck soup. Me and my mom were about to order two congees, but our server was awesome and told us it's more of a sharing platter. Thank god she did, because we barely really finished it. Congee was super tasty. The soft rice texture with the octopus was great. The duck soup was also super yummy! My brother got mad because I kept trying to take some of his duck breast because it was so tasty. Dumplings were typical, but a huge size! We ended the dinner with dessert. I was looking forward to trying Duckine for a couple weeks especially because they are doing half off for kamaina during lunch at the bar. More affordable way to try a new place out. When you walk-in, it's an amazing space, dark and hip with beautiful Asian-style accents that really pop and set the vibe. I tried a variety of small dishes, the duck soup and roast duck. I love the ingredients that they are trying to showcase and incorporate into this fresh concept for Lahaina. For 2 weeks in, the food is impressive but still needs a bit of dialing in, which I'm sure will happen in no time with such a talented team! Drinks are already spot on. Give this place a try. Location is good on front Street in a renovated restaurant with outdoor tables. They were able to seat us with minimal wait. Our server explained how the dishes were shared, and was able to answer drink questions, but could have explained the menu a little more detail, and excitement before asking us to order. We ordered a feast of the Buddhas bowl and endive salad, half duck and shrimp fried rice. We also had an onion pancake for an appetizer. All the food was nicely prepared. It was fresh, and it was tasty. I particularly liked the sauce that they serve; The duck with it was a Lilikoi Hosin sauce. The Buddhas feast would be excellent for somebody is who is a vegetarian. I actually had it with chicken and I thought the chicken was very tender. My partner had a drink with Shiso Leaf. The food came out rather quickly, and a manager did stop by at the table and thanked us for coming out. The Server was polite, but both the ordering, and the checkout could've been smoother. They were kind enough to give us to go containers. They use one of these new credit card machines and it was a little confusing to get the proper receipt with the tip on it. Super super good Chinese/Asian fusion! The winner was definitely the fried rice with shrimp, though we tried a good variety of dishes. Definitely get things to share family style! The drinks are also super innovative and made me want to go back and try more, but that will have to wait until I return to Maui next year. The scallion pancakes were a bit thick and not flaky as I personally like (I'm extremely biased having gone to China/Taiwan multiple times, so take my opinions with a grain of salt here). This place was such a fun time! Came in on a weeknight after we added ourselves to the Yelp waitlist, seems like it wasn't super necessary because there was availability. The service was great and our server was friendly and attentive, and even brought over a lei for my friend since it was her birthday! They have a weeknight happy hour which was pretty nice with discounted drinks and apps from 8-10pm. It has a nice indoor/outdoor seating area and was very pleasant on a warm evening. Favorites were the duck and shrimp baos, and the fried rice. The green beans were a little soggy (we wish they would have been fried vs boiled). Came here while on vacation with my family and some friends. There is a very small lot for parking or you can find parking on the street. It's before you get to the hustle and bustle of the main drag. We ordered A LOT of stuff and I don't recall everything. The duck was huge but a bit over cooked and had a lot of fat still on it. I'm used to that being removed. The skin wasn't as crispy as we hoped either. Appetizers were yummy! Noodles were good too but unless you like the raw ramen taste, I would stay away from the crispy noodle dish. Service was friendly and efficient. We did have reservations as well. Had a buy 1 lunch entree get one free coupon from the activities desk in the resort. i told the activities desk guy that duckine was better than star noodle and he was shocked. he said he'll let the duckine owner know. obviously star noodle has the sunset backdrop but that's pretty much it. duckine's food, drinks, and execution was a level up. The drinks were very tasty and not watered down. Their bar makes some of the most creative and potent drinks in maui. Particularly love that coconut foam that goes on top of their ube drink and another drink i believe. Kids also get some toys to play with while we wait for the food to come out. The bite sized buns can skip imo since its just filler for your stomach. the char siu rice is legit. it doesn't need that red coloring tbh. the meat itself is super tender, kids loved it. the broth on the ube noodles is coconut based i believe, better than most broths here in maui. the pressed duck was great as well. its fried and very tasty. happy hour at 2pm is pretty much the place to be since their drinks are phenomenal. read more

This new concept in an old classic Chinese restaurant space at the north end of Front Street in Lahaina is a bold new gem for the area! Fantastic Asian fusion dishes slam right into the local Hawaiian vibes to create a bright, bubbly, refreshed space in this historically trendy and popular shopping district of western Maui! The well appointed yet focused menu offered a Dim sum-esque experience while covering options from vegetarian to duck! Prices were VERY competitive, especially for Front St., but they could easily grow their price point based on the quality of flavors that were present in each dish we tried! The kitchen even accommodated my 6 year oldest bland(er) palate by giving him "cheeseburger bao" with all the "grown-up toppings" on the side! Excellent ambiance, beautiful views, great location, caring staff with fantastic service, and an exquisite food experience await you at this new little Lahain gem! Food was just ok. Wish the taste matched the price tag. Surprised that the reviews are so high. Came here for a birthday dinner and wish we went to another place...maybe star noodle. Location was great and they offered valet parking. Our favorite was the char sui pork. Disappointed in duck chow mein because it was very dry. Did not like the taste of the green beans and they were a bit undercooked. We sprung for the steamed kampachi and we were the most disappointed in that dish...because the taste lacked character (identity) and plain bland. Hope others have better luck here. read more

So nice to have a new exciting t place to try! Fusion Chinese food.Quite noisy and the place is mostly open and we went on a stormy night so make sure to bring a sweater or jacket in case. Your hostess does need to understand that service and guide dogs r legally allowed inside a restaurant as she first advised me we would need to sit outside as we had our dog with us and then I explained she was a working dog and she did sit us inside. Our waitress Coral was fantastic,very informative and good on recommending things. We had duck baos which were excellent and our fave dish. Also scallion pancakes which were a bit bland and not very exciting. Ube noodles was tasty. Seafood Kung Pao was very spicy and u need rice to sop up the sauce and cut spice a bit as well. We passed on the dessert because it sounded too big even though we wanted to try it- our waitress said on Valentine's Day they served a mini portion and we would've loved that to have had so maybe in future the place should consider it permanently on the menu. The thought of ordering a huge deep fried dessert topped with custard and ice cream is a bit overwhelming. Overall it was quite good and I would Probably try it again to try more things... Order the duck. If you're used to family style dining this spot is doing exactly that. Food is intended to be shared and put in the middle of the table and comes out quickly whenever it's ready in the kitchen. Service from the host to the server to the staff very professional. Concise and efficient. Of course at a place called "Duck-ine" all of their duck dishes were executed very well. Food came out quick. The cocktails are inventive and have great creative concepts. Our Kaya Toast with Foie dessert was by far the stand out. I would go back for that alone. Great view as it sits right across the street from the ocean. The price of things matches the view. I haven't gone into great detail on much of the food and drink as it's still a fairly new restaurant and I can see them adjusting and tweaking and becoming a real force - it is nice to have a foodie-ish restaurant like this on Maui. Overall an experience I'd do again, just a little pricey. read more

I was hoping to up my review from yesterday to 5 stars, but was more disappointed today. We really loved my Mai Tai yesterday, and my wife said it was the best on the island thus far. We were given a coupon and knew if we skipped the Duck Bao, we couldn't go wrong. We ordered the Wagyu Bao. This was excellent and a must try! However, we ordered a pork dish that was super overcooked. Required a steak knife to cut. The bok choy was the best thing on the plate. Skip the flavorless fried rice and save your money. Mai Tais were lackluster today. Service today wasn't up to par compared to yesterday. Thomas was OK, but had to remind him for things and took a long time to return with the check. When we told Thomas our frustrations he said yes people do complain about the dry pork and offered to replace it at the end of our meal. We also told him about the Mai Tais compared to yesterday. He asked me if it was the same bartender! Clearly this restaurant lacks consistency in service and drinks. read more

We spotted this as we were driving to another restaurant and booked a reservation for the following night. We were blown away. The cocktails were unique and delicious, the bao was amazing. Dumplings had a light texture. Onion pancakes were tasty. We LOVED the fried rice with the char sui pork chop. And the veggies were great. We did not do an entree. Loved it so much we cancelled a reservation for another place to go here again. Night 2, tried some new and some familiar things. Bao we're tasty, but seemed a little smaller than the first night. Sxallion pancakes were tasty, and a little less salty. The only surprise was we got the half duck which was disappointing given their duck-forward focus. It was dry and seemed like it may have been repeated from the night before. Not bad, but the weakest of the items we had across the 2 nights. The wait staff and hostess were great both nights. Just a bit of a question on the Tuesday cook vs Sunday-Sunday's seemed better. But I'm sure they'll get it worked out given they've been open less than 3 months. We'll definitely be back blnext trip and I suspect getting reservations will be difficult by then. Glad we found them and great to have a new restaurant to add to our rotation. read more

At first I was afraid, I was petrified Kept thinking I could never live without this food by my side But then I went to the fridge to get the rest of my leftovers And it felt wrong Because now the food is all gone And so I'm back To write this review To tell you how without more Duckine I'm feeling oh so blue I should have this restaurant closer so I could eat here every But alas, Lahaina is so far away I should go, walk out the door Drive back there now Despite the windy roads Because the drive is worth it to try more Duckine food It's just that good Go give it a try Don't know if I, will I survive Since I forgot to get ka'amaina discount the last time When I dined here for dinner Yet I'm still a winner Because the food Is still worth it full price, hey hey! read more
