I know that the name of this restaurant has donuts in it, but what Duffin's is really known for is their fried chicken. There are some things about Duffin's that should normally steer you away: their sketchy restaurant set up, the bathrooms, not the best service... But there are things that keep people (myself included) coming back. The fried chicken (crispiest and definitely top 3 in the city), and of course their donuts. Also, you can't beat their prices. A full meal under $15? Fantastic. Duffin's is open 24 hours (one of the few establishments in the city), so if you've ever come in during the wee hours of the night, you know that you've seen some interesting things. My suggestion? This was my third consecutive weekend for my craving of donuts. This was the most affordable by far which meant great value. Again I selected half a dozen to go. I always thought this placed served only donuts. But it was a pleasant surprise to see they served a full menu of other items. I couldn't resist by ordering their chicken wings and fries. This one of my favourite go to places for food, not only because it's so close to where I live, but because the food here is great! They have an amazing selection of donuts and other menu items. The fried chicken is so crispy and juicy - they do spicy and regular flavours (always go for spicy haha). Their springs are also very good and nicely deep fried to golden brown - you can choose between meat or vegetarian filling (must dip in plum sauce!) Hands down THE BEST fried chicken in Vancouver. They have two options - spicy and regular. I had three pieces of spicy and tried a bite of regular and both were incredible. I don't know how they make it or what seasoning is in their batter but it is divine. Best part too, it's open 24 hours and it's extremely cheap! If you're not in for fried chicken, this menu is huge and has a mix of so many things from hot dogs to tamales. MMMMMM.... Doooonut. As a kid growing up in Vancouver, I used to go to Duffin's a lot. Since then, many of the local donut shops (Duffin's and Nuffy's) have disappeared and replaced by Timmy's. So just for kicks, I decided to pay Duffin's a visit to relive my childhood memories. When I walk in, I immediately notice the variety and quantity of donuts in the main display case. There's everything from the traditional powdered donuts and long johns to spinkled honey crullers. The donuts are freshly made as I can see into the back kitchen where there's 3 ladies dipping and powdering fresh batches. I was there for half an hour and saw 3 new trays of donuts being brought out despite the case being almost full. I was with a few friends and split a dozen which cost $9. The freshness and quality of the donuts was certainly a step up from Tim's. This Duffin's is a little odd in that donuts is only half their business. The menu board on the wall have pictures of all sorts of subs and sandwiches - pork, lamb, vietnamese, etc. There's even fried chicken and bubble tea if you're so inclined. I already had dinner so I can't comment on the other food items but one of my friends insists that the food is excellent. They also are less than $5 so there's certainly value to be had. The sitting area is something to be desired. While there was ample seating for our group, it could certainly use a makeover. It reminds me of an old food court from the 80s. We were there on a saturday night and there were a fair number of questionable characters wandering around. No one that made me worry for my life but caused me to stare for an impolite period of time - and not in a good way. This is my absolute favorite place to get sandwiches fried chicken bubble tea quick snack spring rolls salad's donuts .... And that's just the stuff that I like. They have shaved ices that are huge and shareable. I guess they're kind of like a snow cone but this is beyond the cone. The staff are always super friendly and super nice and even when it's really busy there quick. Anyways, I went there last Saturday night around 11pm for their fried chicken after hearing multiple rave reviews about it. Oh boy! Was I ever disappointed. The chicken had a light crunch, was a bit greasy, dry, and lacked any real flavour despite being spicy. Man was I disappointed after ordering a 10 piece box costing $20. It tasted more like boiled chicken later fried, man were those breast pieces ever dry. Not sure how long it sat under the heat lamp or how often they make new batches, but I was not impressed. Came here on a Sunday around 11pm for a late night donut run after some drinks. The place still had some ppl dining in and coming in and out. Although I've never dined in and tried their other food, I'm giving this a 5 because it's 24hrs, service was good and staff was friendly, the value is great, and the donuts were delicious. Since it was late night, I would have expected the donuts to be stale, however they were fresh (not sure if it's because I got lucky that they just cooked up a fresh batch). This is a cheap, simple no frills place. The owner is a filipina lady who lived in California and so does a mix of Mexican/American food. But there are a few things to avoid. Pupusas. They are not so good and served with cole slaw and a strange salsa not like the Salvadorean style. Who the hell serves pupusas with coleslaw?? Tamales are under par. Was so excited to finally get to Duffin's but they misunderstood my order and gave me a regular Boston cream which I thought was going to be a maple Boston Cream. It was a very good donut, just not the one I wanted. Sadly on a Sunday afternoon the place was completely filthy from the night before which kind of ruined my appetite. During the day we drove by and started making fun of the name. That same evening we were hungry after bowling and didn't want to go to the golden arches. This place is amazing for late night food for the drunk, the munchies, and even the sober. I had a cheese burger, fries, and one drum stick. I wanted to make sure I tried all my cravings. I loved it. Fries has some lovely extra crispness shelling on it, the cheese burger I didn't have too much expectations, but it was delicious as well AND neatly put together. Feels like I have the world at my feet when I'm here! They literally have all kinds of food -- sub sandwiches, Chinese food, Vietnamese food, bubble tea, fried chicken....donuts....everything!!! I'm a huge fan of their fries. They're really substantial -- pretty much identical to costco fries (totes amaze). So I always get these on the side with my Vietnamese sub when I come here! This is my favorite place to go on hot summer nights when I'm craving a burger and some soft-serve ice cream. It's kind of a ghetto Dairy Queen of sorts, but better. They've got all kinds of menu items to please every palate: burgers, fries, ice cream, donuts, bubble tea, Chinese food, pupusas and tortas from Latin America and fried chicken too. Get the fries. So Vancouver has Lucky's and Cartem's which serve these fancy donuts that are admittedly too rich and over the top. My kids love donuts, but actually prefer Tim Horton's to Lucky's. But they like Duffin's best of all, probably because they serve donuts with pink icing, but also because they like the lightness and simplicity of the cake batter. I'm a fan of their perfectly-made simple glazed donuts. I also enjoyed my "hot torta sub" quite a bit. And yes, these tortas are akin to those that you would get in Mexico. Duffin's bakes (and sells) its own bread on which the fillings are placed. And my spicy pulled beef was absolutely delicious. Based off of my takeaway review, I really enjoyed these doughnuts (donuts...?)! They're fresh, soft, and not overly sweet. As far as I know, they're also half the price compared to the ones you can get from typical specialty donut places. I tried their double chocolate dip, chocolate dip with sprinkles (my fave so far) and the chocolate peanut. My mom had the doughnut with the raspberry on the top and she really liked hers as well. I'm looking forward to tasting more of their flavours because I haven't been let down at all. Gotta love that this place is 24 hours too! Finally, I give 4/5 stars because I reckon they should have seasonal or signature Duffin's creations - but again, this review is based on a takeout experience so perhaps they have already implemented this; if this is the case I'll update my review at a later time. :) read more
