Stopped here for a quick lunch between appointments... everyone is super nice and welcoming service is great! [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a cute restaurant laid out really nice and gives a great vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food is amazing!' The best Blt I have ever had I know it's an easy sandwich but they made it so well and put an amazing twist on it!

This was by far the best meal we had in DC. Service was quick, incredibly friendly and perfect. Burger and fries were delicious. Definitely look forward to coming back.

Came here to try out the mac and cheese and sad to say it was not my favorite. I wanted it to have way more flavor and seasoning. Under the top layer of baked cheese there's nothing going on. I also tried the highly rated burgers. It was good but I don't think I'm in a rush to go back for it either. Surprising to me, the best part of the meal was the sweet potato fries! I could eat those endlessly. The staff were attentive and friendly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have sitting inside but also a really nice outdoor patio.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

It was decent! Overall we were hungry and needed a quick bite and saw Dukes had some availability on a Saturday night. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were seated outside in the heated patio which was totally fine.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] For food we had the Tuna Melt, Caesar salad and Waygu burger. The Tuna melt was good but honestly was a little bland which is not typically the case on a tuna melt. It was good though and perfectly cooked and full of tuna. The wagyu burger was particularly good with the onion jam really elevating the dish. Service was good - nothing special but no complaints whatsoever. Overall I would come back to Dukes for a quick bite!

I felt underwhelmed given that it was voted DC's best burger. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is cute though! It's large with some outdoor seating options.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our server was also super sweet and accommodating given the large group I was with. I tried the proper burger with a side of their sweet potato fries. I liked that the burger was served on a potato bun, but it was so greasy and the acidity of the pickles and onion did nothing to cut through it. The bun on the bottom was also soaked and kind of fell apart, so the structural integrity of this burger was also a little questionable. The sweet potato fries were way too soft in my opinion. I love an occasional soggy fry, but the lack of crunch made them rather unenjoyable to eat.

It's holiday season so that means plenty of Christmas inspired pop ups. I got to check this gingerbread land one out which is in a series of several holiday pop ups at different duke's grocery locations throughout the area, with each one having a different theme. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a pretty quaint space and the pop up is located on the second floor, with all the festive decorations you can imagine.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I arrived not too long after they opened so service was quick and the server was energetic and engaging with the few of us that were in the space. Their holiday inspired cocktail options included a tootsie roll'd old fashion, gingerbread lane mule, and a peppermint espresso martini (each $14). I decided to try the mule and the martini, the martini was probably my favorite of the two I wasn't sure how well a peppermint vodka base would go but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and compliment of the ingredients. The gingerbread mule was a bit more potent and maybe the one I had had a bit too much lime juice so I didn't truly get to appreciate how the overall flavors would mimic the taste of gingerbread but still a decent drink. [[HIGHLIGHT]]All in all it was a cool spot to check out.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

My friend found this place online and I'm so glad she did as it was a nice walk from the hotel. The staff was very friend. The decor was so cool that it makes you wish you lived closer so you can be a regular. The food was tasty. I had the burger and fries and was glad there was plenty for later that evening. They have upstairs and outside seating Next time I'm in DC .. I'll be back.

The mac and cheese here is so good. It's got a subtle truffle flavor to it that makes it unique. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have patio seating out front which would be perfect for nice summer days.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Came here on a Friday and was lucky enough to get a table! I ordered the waygu burger with sweet potato fries and the fries were perfectly done! The burger itself was the perfect size, although I asked for no sauce and they forgot but oh well. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Their outdoor area seems super great for the summer.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Can't wait to come back!

Ask the Community - Duke's Grocery

    Is the patio Heated?

Yes it is! There are dedicated heaters inside the strEATery tables, plus tall heaters at the patio tables. Enjoy hot cocktails from the Toddy Bar!

    Are kids allowed?

Yes they are! My son loves the burger and my daughter likes the Mac and Cheese 😊

    Are you open now?

Yes, open for in person dining too!

Do they take reservations or call ahead?

No but you never really wait more than 10-15 min on weekdays/late night and there's always a seat at the bar!

Can I order the proper burger with cheddar cheese and add bacon?

Absolutely. I've done that a handful of times before. They're pretty good with substitutions and/or additions.

    Any gluten free options?

I went back to get an answer to your question. I've now been 3 times and find the burger delicious and the staff friendly and the drinks decent.…

    Can I order takeout?

Yes, but only in person at the bar. They do not accept orders over the phone.

Is this place good for vegetarians?

They definitely have veggie options but its not what they're known for.

Can dishes such as the burger be made dairy free?

I know they don't allow any modifications to their burger, but I can't speak for the rest of the menu

Which meats are halal if any?

Hi! The Proper Burger is made with certified Halal meat (Creekstone Farms premium Angus). See you soon. Thanks!

    Is duke's gay friendly?

    Definitely!

Had a friendly greeting from Cat, who informed me that they didn't have any tables available at that time since it was trivia night and a popular time to be there, but one would probably be opening up soon. Thankfully I scored two spots at the bar and told her I'd take that table when it was available. So I bellied up to the bar and admitted to the bartender, Amir, that I'm not great at beer. He was gracious and had some recommendations and let me taste a few options. I landed on the La Chouffe Belgian blond ale. Tasty! And I loved the little gnome on the glass, the brand's adorable mascot. Friend joined, ordered a beer and we were quickly escorted to our table to order dinner. They opted for the classic house mussels, served with fries and several slices of bread for sopping up those tasty juices at the bottom of the mussel pot. I got the cheeseburger and subbed onion rings for the regular fries. Rings were great(!) but the burger was pretty dry and mediocre. We also shared some mozzarella sticks and they were tasty. Lastly, we decided to participate in the evening's trivia festivities. We didn't expect to do well, especially since we were the only 2-person team. Turns out we ended up getting 2nd place. Fun!

I believe only 3 types of canned cocktails are available. There's a beer and wine menu but I'm not sure how exhaustive it is. Our food also took forever to arrive, long after the show started and we ordered about 20+ minutes before the show started. The seating is inconvenient and narrow, and tables and floors are sticky. I'm only giving it 3 stars because my cheeseburger was good and the patty was thick. I would come back for the comedy show probably but not get food or drinks. We ordered the truffle fries which were alright and the lemon pepper wings with blue cheese. The wings were really good but the fries were just ehh. Also ordered a lemon drop which I did not like. There's only one sever for the whole room which made the service sometimes a little slow as it had to been at least 30 people or more at the show. It was a (2) drink/item minimum which was no problem but the menu was limited. Would we come back...most likely no unless we went to another area of the location. My interpretation of the gist of what everyone was complaining about was that they used to come here all the time (as did I years ago, but it's been a year since being here) and they didn't like the new, slimmed down menu... and they definitely hated the prices here now. Our service was ok, nothing special. I feel like the majority of the servers are very young and might not have the training, nor experience to understand what true service is, not just taking orders and bringing food. The menu was nice. We liked their "Everyday is Sunday" section of the menu, so we tried 2 orders (4 persons) of the pork chop tomahawk and 1 order (2 persons) of the Côte de Boeuf. We started with their Scotch Egg - WOW! Really flavorful with a great texture, inside and out. Definitely a very nice way to start. Cocktails and wine were a hit here for sure! Especially Jarad's G&T, which we got a couple of. Main dishes were great! Plenty of food too!! The spices on the crust of the porkchop tomahawk were so tasty and the temperature was spot-on! The steak in the Côte de Boeuf was incredible! Perfectly seasoned and at that absolute perfect temperature too! The carrots that came with this were very nicely done, but the potatoes stole the show! This dish came with OUTSTANDING Fondant potatoes... They had a great, smokey flavor to them, as if they were basted in pork fat. The meat was perfectly textured and flavored. Overall - While this is no longer the Hunter's Head that many came to know, love, and enjoy, I feel they're doing a decent job here. I'll definitely return, as I want to try their fish & chips!

I ended up biking and there's a bike stand really close by. My friend was craving fish and chips, so we ventured out this way. Because we came on a Thursday they had a deal going where if you ordered a pie, you could get a beer for free. Of course I had to partake, so I ordered the special pie, which was a masala, chicken, curry pie, and it was quite good. A bit small for the price point but with the beer included totally worth it also because their fries are so good. I could demolish over a pound of those fries. They were thick potato and maybe the extra added bonus of having to use a glass ketchup bottle added to it. My friend and I were also taught how to properly hit the ketchup bottle to get the ketchup out by the bartender. You find the 57 on the bottle at an angle and bump you palm there that instead of hitting the bottom and hoping and praying that ketchup comes out. It actually worked or at least it was more efficient than trying to hit the bottom of the bottle upside down. I had never had a hand pumped beer before, but it was quite good. They are a warm beer rotating and it was quite good, it especially paired well with the pie or fish and chips.

The beer selection is incredible, vibes are solid - it is pretty old world and upscale for a beer joint - but if you are looking for a full meal vegetarians should go elsewhere. They *have* vegetarian options but it's one of those things where they do the bare minimum because they have to and your choices are like...the one thing. Which leads me to the one vegetarian entree, the risotto. It was fine. Not mindblowing. Small portion for the price - small portions all around, frankly. See my pic. Our server, who was impressively attentive/efficient given that he was the only person making the rounds to all of the tables in the upstairs room, which were packed because of the World Cup, recommended getting.the brussels sprouts small plate without bacon, so I did. I did not like it. It came with pomegranate seeds and a sauce that were sweet but then had parmesan and savory flavors that did not go. I suspect the salty, fatty bacon was important to balancing out these flavors. People I was with got house pickles, fries and meatballs which all appeared solid. The portions for the fries and meatballs were pretty teeny for the price IMO. Like I said, beer selection is out of this world. Not mad at the prices or portions there, especially given that it's largely imported. Is this personally a place I would make a go to? No. Only if I am taking out a friend who is super into beer tasting. But if I were super into French and Belgian beer and or really liked that kind of food (eg mussels and very meaty Northern European dishes) ? Maybe. So my personal recommendation is to come, have beer, enjoy the ambiance, and treat food as an afterthought for if you need something to eat.
