Came here for the bottomless bloody and mimosa brunch on a Saturday and the place was slammed. They offered to seat us outside, so we took the opportunity and sat in the 50 degree weather . They did have blankets though, which was a nice touch! The bloodies had the perfect amount of spice and the mimosas were a good mix of OJ to champs and they kept the drinks flowing! I had the smoked lox press, the salmon was pastrami smoked and had great flavor and I got a side of potato boxy. In DC for memorial weekend and I had to go to the place that is said to have the best burger. So on a nice night a friend and I walked over from our hotel. I was a bit on the fence after I ordered when I was told that there are no fries. I'm like who doesn't do fries with a burger. The bartender who took our order said trust me you don't need it. I gave him the side eye saying...I'll be the judge of that. The Proper Burger in word was...... PROPER!!!!! I don't believe that I ever had a burger that was so full of flavor. How did they know the flavor combinations would make that taste so good. As far as no fries...the bartender was absolutely right. After eating that burger you can't fit anything else in anyway. Duke's Grocery is listed on my my blogs as a must eat place in DC. My bf and I checked it on a yelp and looked great and was right next to our hotel, a huge plus. The place is 2 stories, the host let us know there were 2 spots at the bar upstairs so we went to grab those. Skimming through the reviews and pictures we knew we had to order the burger. We also decided on ordering the short rib sandwich. Both portions were large and the burger, so tasty! Definitely want to order that and it comes with all the toppings. The meat was cooked perfectly and the flavor was very good. The short rib sandwich came up short, looked great but did not have much flavor and the bread was not warm. Pretty disappointed in that. Came here for a late lunch with friends after seeing the Cherry Blossoms. Service was super quick and everyone was so nice. Everything was so good, but tip if you don't really like burgers that are on the sweeter side go for the Wagyu Burger instead of the Proper. Here's my honest review: everyone raves about the burger here, and yes it was good, but I HATE coming here! Both times I've come here I haven't been seated indoors, even when tables are open inside. The birds outside literally attacked me for my food one time, and it was chilly, I would've really appreciated indoor seating but there's just always something going on here and they're really stingy with indoor seating. The Mac and cheese was mehh, I did like the corn though. All in all the food is ridiculously overpriced. This place is too hyped and overrated to enjoy because everyone wants to be here. Duke's is not a grocery store and I almost skipped it on a Yelp restaurant search. Luckily I found out it is a sandwich joint, but not your typical Subway. It's a cool, laid-back restaurant that serves up most the unique sandwiches! You can dine al fresco, indoors or if you're by yourself like I was, at the bar. If you come for a late dinner a number of their fav dishes may be sold out. I missed out on Che Guevara! I also missed out on the lamb kofta. As a general rule, I do not eat catfish because of its "fishy" taste. However, the bartender assured me that their Ca Tre Banh Mi was not fishy. He was right! I also stay away from pâté but once again threw caution to the wind because I was hungry. The Banh Mi was perfectly marinated and cooked catfish, with chicken liver pâté, chili, pickled daikon, cukes, fish sauce and a ton of cilantro. You have to love cilantro like I do. They are more generous than most Vietnamese Phô places. All the competing and complimentary flavors blended into one delicious hot sandwich! For about $12 plus a beer, I'm confident my boss will like this dinner business expense. Just don't tell him about the next night's expense ;) read more

The sweet chili sauce, Gouda, and charred red onions really make the burger perfect. But seriously, I don't want to eat a burger without fries! Also, for me, $13 for a burger without a side is on the expensive side. Even if I do want to pay to get a side or shared plate, the menu is pretty limiting, especially at brunch. I know their proper burger had been mentioned again and again as one of the best burgers in the DMV. But my eyes were set on their catfish banh mi. This banh mi was one of a kind - perfectly toasted french baguette overloaded with not only catfish but also pork floss, chicken pate, and pickled daikon. Thanks to my curious stomach, I might just had the best sandwich of my life. It was such an unique, delicious, genius combo. I thought I would have leftover to take home but my inner fatty just won't stop. I've heard here and there that the proper burger at Duke's is the best burger in DC, and while the burger is good, I don't think it lived up to that title. Truffle mac and cheese was as magical as other reviews suggest, a little smaller than I expected. Order it without the bacon though--the bacon comes in full pieces rather than crisps and didn't really fit in well with the rest of the dish. I've walked by this place a few times over the years and never went it. About a year or so ago a friend of mine and I were trying out as many burgers in the city as we could and blogged about it. I think that's when I first heard about the Brunchie. Duke's is basically in what looks like an old row house, has two floors and is pretty cozy. The first floor has mostly counter seating, and the second floor has tables and a few comfy leather chairs in a bay window that's next to a small but well-stocked bar. There are also picnic tables out front for dining alfresco. I've been here a few times, and I may order elote, or potato pancakes, but you can guarantee that I'm going to have either the Brunchie, or the Proper (depending on what time of day I'm there). Their basically the same burger with gouda, pickles, charred red onion, chili sauce, rocket, and garlic aioli, but have different names for brunch and dinner. When I first ordered the burger I noticed that my server didn't ask how I wanted it cooked, and then found out because it's a double stack of two thin patties and they come out lightning fast. Came here with a group six on Sunday right before they opened at 10am in order to get seats as they don't take reservations. We were lucky we did as the lunch rush soon followed! We were seated upstairs and served pretty fast. On suggestion from our server, the husband and I got a lox burger and a proper burger to split. My friends tried other assorted brekkies on the menu. I must say, the food was really, really good!! I wouldn't recommend getting the coffee. Although they do give refills, the mugs are tiny at three bucks fifty. The proper burger lived up to its reputation! I was a bit disappointed that we couldn't try the mac and cheese (they don't start serving that until 4pm). One of our group never got her fresh-squeezed orange juice, but I don't think they charged her for it. This was a go-to whenever we were in town. Deeply disappointed this last visit. Menu was limited with everything spicy except the grilled cheese which was super salty. They need an acid like dill pickles to cut the salt. Bread was too fried, not buttery at all. Service was nice when they decided to visit the table. Weird selection of appetizers too. Duke's Proper Burger is the best burger I've ever eaten. I have visited Duke's 3 times and brought at least one person new to the place each time. They agree that it may be the best burger they've ever eaten. The burger has many different flavor profiles of sweet, savory, pickley (the burger comes with pickles which supports my personal opinion that good burgers comes with pickles without you having to ask to add them on). Their truffle mac and cheese is very yummy too. Truffle isn't overpowering. They use pasta shells which I support. Cheese is broiled on the top for a nice satisfactory crunchy top layer. Definitely get to share with others as a side for the star of the show: the burger. Not pictured is the Torta Milanesa "Cubano" which I have also tried. Its definitely a good option although I should warn the condiments on the sandwich can be strong for some folk - I believe it was the dijon or the pickled jalapeno that gave the sandwich an overall wasabi like kick to it. It is undeniable that they serve one of the best burgers in America. The "Proper Burger" is a proper delight. We had very high expectations going in after reading an article hailing praise for the burger... they were met. It's a juicy, luscious patty topped with gooey Gouda cheese, fresh arugula, pickles, pickled onions, and some kind of delicious complementary sauce. My friend chose to add on the egg and bacon for a quite decadent feast. I will say, when you get into the top ranks of the burgers in America, it becomes a matter of taste. This may be your favorite burger ever. For me, it's on the sweeter side. The pickled onions play a louder tune than their harmonious salty counterparts. So I think adding bacon would be the way to go. If you're in the area, you definitely have to go here. Andddd the service was excellent. Freshly squeezed lemonade at the bar, quick food preparation, pleasant staff. Overall a great experience. Let me start out by saying the Proper Burger was excellent. So was the truffle mac and cheese. Unfortunately, quality food alone does not equate to a four or five-star experience. My friends and I came in on a busy Saturday evening, so we weren't surprised that there was a wait. We were added to the list and were told to come back in 30 minutes, so we went next door for a drink. When we returned, there were still several names ahead of ours. I was a bit concerned that we wouldn't hear our party name called because of the noise, but we were assured this wouldn't be a problem. Bear in mind there are restaurants that take food orders with an iPad, but Duke's can't even join the 21st century in how it notifies customers that their tables are ready. If you're not going to call or text diners, at least hand out pagers that light up/buzz. Nope -- Duke's uses a pad of paper and a pencil. When we still hadn't been seated 15-20 minutes later, I went over to check on our table and was told that our names had been called but we hadn't responded. The hostess showed me where my friend's name was crossed out. Mind you, we were in the bar area just eight feet away. We had to have our names put back on the list and waited a while longer. Once we were finally seated, the meal went as planned. The food was quite good; we all enjoyed our burgers and the two of us who had never had it before devoured the truffle mac and cheese. I thought that given the sad attempt to notify us of our table being ready might lead to our being offered a round of drinks on the house or dessert or something as an apology, but that didn't happen. I'm not saying I won't give Duke's another chance at some point, but I definitely won't go on a Saturday night. Some of my favorites include: mac and cheese (literally the most perfect mac and cheese, consistency of the sauce is on POINT, shell pasta is also a great choice. Only complaint is that it comes out sometimes lukewarm - wish it came out piping hot!), corn elote (huuuuuuuge corn gal and this hits the spot), proper burger (cooked perfectly, toppings are interesting but somehow work together, super juicy and all around a good choice), and I personally loved the duck confit sandwich that was on the menu in the Fall (they told me they'd bring it back for the Summer). Can't wait to try the rest of the menu! Service is fine, nothing to write home about. Very small and they don't take reservations, so be prepared to wait. The first time I came to Duke's, I enjoyed it so much I went back the next two nights, too. The first time I came to Duke's, it was a warm weeknight summer evening, made even warmer by the fact that I was still stiflingly dressed in the suit I had worn to the office that day. I was in the neighborhood at a networking event, and, well, let's just say I find those socially exhausting sometimes. So, after a little while, I left red wine, quiches, and my name tag behind, and headed over to Duke's Grocery. Duke's is typically very busy around dinnertime, so if someone is joining you or if you want to seat a larger party, be prepared to wait a while. I hopped up to the bar without needing to wait and settled in for regenerative me-time. My bartender was extremely friendly and recommended the cubano. When it arrived a short time later, I was impressed with the portion size and found it to be the most perfect antidote to my depleted social energy reserves. The cubano is a beautiful mashup of German fried chicken schnitzel, with American sandwich elements like Jarlsberg cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado, then Italian capicola, and even spread with dijon and a garlic aioli for good measure, all on a Mexican torta roll. The result was, to me, a perfect sandwich. The very next night I returned. Yes! My bartender had recommended I then try the burger, so I came back and, lo and behold, there she was again and she even remembered me. A few minutes later, I was diving into the burger, which features gouda, pickles, charred red onion, garlic aioli, arugula, and--very interestingly--sweet chili sauce. The last bit I was most skeptical of, but it played against the rich beef and funky garlic aioli very nicely. And finally the next night I returned for the pork belly banh mi, and that was wonderful too, overall, but I prefer a more traditional french baguette for banh mi, where the inside is soft but the outside cracks and crumbles really easily. This bread was a little more chewy and toothsome, which made it a little more difficult to eat. Duke's is a beautiful gem of a restaurant, and if I were still in the DC area, I would not be surprised if I continued with additional three-night streaks there. The food is really good, interesting, and good portion size. And what's more, the service is very kind and the whole space is inviting and looks nice. read more

Easily one of the best burgers I've had. The Proper burger is delicious. The sweet thai chili sauce does really make one hell of a difference in the taste, and the fluffy brioche bun is the perfect choice. Topped off with pickles and gouda and charred onions, it makes it the perfect bite. I'll admit I used a fork and knife to eat this, mostly because it might have been messier to eat otherwise. My one big quibble is the choice of meat temp prep being either medium rare or well done. Why not the fine middle ground of Medium or Medium Well? I actually got very sick a day or so after eating here, so I'm not sure if it was the meat temp here that did it. Also the no fries with the burger? This is standard every where almost, why does a side need to be ordered separately on a burger that is already $12+? A friend came into town, and we wanted to find lunch before heading to the Renwick Gallery. I had bookmarked Duke's Grocery a year ago because they were supposed to have one of the best Mac and cheeses in DC. I hope they hit the food lists for more than just that because I really enjoyed this place! We arrived at 11:09 am and got one of the last tables for lunch in the upstairs area. We were even lucky enough to get fancy comfy chairs and the table by the window. We ordered a Truffle Mac and Cheese ($10) to split, and I ordered the Proper Burger ($13) for my meal. My friend ordered the Spicy Aubergine ($12), which was so large we thought they accidentally brought out two sandwiches. Everything looked amazing, and my food was so delicious. The mac and cheese is extra creamy and had the perfect amount of truffle. It's one of the best in the city, if not the best, hands down. The burger was delicious, and I rarely enjoy burgers. The two thin patties were cooked perfectly, all of the ingredients were delicious, and the brioche bun made it even better. For me to love a burger is a unusual, and I am still thinking about it hours later. The whole meal was wonderful, and I did not need to make dinner after eating here. Our server was very nice and attentive but not overwhelming. He later pointed out that most people like their menu because they can make two meals out of it. The prices were fair, portions great, and food delicious. What more could I want? I returned a few months later to get brunch with a friend, and he agreed that the burger was amazing. At 11:30 AM on a Saturday morning, we did manage to get two seats at the bar for brunch, but there was a wait when we left. I have nothing but good things to say about the food here, but I'm giving Duke's 4 stars because my order was not ready when I went to pick it up, though I arrived at least 30 minutes after it was supposed to be ready. I opted to try out Duke's RW this past weekend. Conveniently, RW is now offered for takeout because of COVID. The only downside? Toasttab (the vendor for ordering takeout and paying for it) did not specify that Duke's brunch RW goes until one time and lunch RW menu starts at another time. I ordered off of the lunch RW menu, and when I went to pick it up, I waited only to learn that they could not find my order because the lunch menu did not start until later. (My understanding is that lunch starts at 3 pm. I believe I showed up pretty close to 3, or at least by the time I left, it was almost 3.) The difference was that I ordered hummus as part of one of the three courses, and that hummus is not offered on the brunch menu. I was asked whether I minded have a potato dish (like latkes, I presume) instead. Based on the proximity to 3pm, it's confusing to me why the hummus could not be made to honor the order, but it wasn't a big deal to get that instead, so I said yes. Then began the waiting. I had also ordered the Proper burger and the rocket salad for the other two courses. Why weren't these ready? Or were they? I waited a decent amount of time, so it seemed like they were making everything from scratch. Was my burger and salad given to someone else? And, was anyone ever going to call me (had I not shown up) to inform me that the hummus was unavailable (for whatever reason) until later that day? Duke's was definitely busy, so I understand if this was not a priority, with servers constantly going inside and outside, passing by me while I waited. But it bears emphasizing that in this situation, it's up to the consumer to know when the menus switch. Now, onto the food. YUM. Duke's has been my go-to place for a burger since this summer. I frequently crave it, and it never disappoints. I don't know what about it is so delicious (maybe the sauces?), but the flavor is like having a party in my mouth I just downed it so quickly this weekend because I was famished. And as the first thing I ate that day, it hit the spot. The salad: just your ordinary salad. There's not much to say here. Some arugula I think and radishes with dressing. Nothing to die for or to write home about. If you want that, see the burger ^^ The potato boxty: this was described to me as a potato pancake. When I think potato pancake, I think latkes. They don't compare to the latkes I know and love, but they weren't bad. They were also sitting on what I believe was a bed of arugula. I'm not sure if I'd try RW here again because by Friday, the burger is what I want, but it was good to try some other things on the menu at Duke's instead of always ordering the same thing! read more

Duke's is on the busy 17th St corridor with tons of options, but it was on my list for some time. We went for HH on a Thursday and actually didn't have to wait at all for a table indoors. The patio looks great, too. Having heard and read so many reviews of the burger we had to get it, but we also tried a bunch of HH $5 beers, an appetizer, and a sandwich. The beet and salmon appetizer is very refreshing and interesting. The spicy eggplant sandwich has a great kick and texture, with the refreshing feel of rocket and cilantro. But the uncontested star is the burger: It is sweet and savory, and has the perfect bun. If you go, do not go off the beaten path and just try the burger, you won't regret it. read more

Went here on a rainy cold night and had a wonderful time. Is it cramped? Yup. Is it loud? Yup. Can there be a long wait? Yup. Is it fun? Yup. There are 2 floors, bar area and seating (bar-ish) downstairs and s bar and a bigger seating upstairs. It's a great place for groups, for sure. It's a rather young crowd as well. The food is good but the burger--yes! They even have some veggie foods for all you grass eaters :) we got the burger and the slow cooked sandwich. It's good but no fries :( What's Sunny w/o Cher? It's the the same with burgers and fries. For appetizers the corn and TRUFFLE Mac n cheese. Yeah, truffle. Truffle is basically a synonym for heaven. Mark my words. The drinks were okay, Moscow mule was plain but the bartender and the service is really good! Go here. Get everything, including the oxtail. I don't eat tails but this tail was worth it!
