My heating unit was not working properly. I thought it was the thermostat. I called Duke's and they came by, did a thorough inspection and found the problem was not the thermostat but a gas valve in the heating unit. They replaced it and I have not had any problems since. We've been dealing with Dukes due to our home warranty. First time, we waited a week, but they were able to diagnose and fix our issue. My wife was not happy with the attitude of the tech. He also left black marks on our thermostat and wall. Second time, separate issue and we asked for another tech. Waited another week for an appointment and they sent the same tech. He was able to diagnose a blown fuse. Three weeks later, and A/C went down again. Figured it wasn't worth waiting ANOTHER week for someone to show, so I bought a multimeter and pack of fuses at Home Depot. Noticed the weathered/used fuse (which was marked up over 500%, retails for 5$ and charge $31) they put in was blown less than a month later. So there you have. Some good, some bad. I'm going to start off by saying I like Duke. He shoots from the hip and is brutally honest while at the same time, he provides very good solutions that work. Duke was recommended by a friend that had his furnace repaired by him. The weather was getting warmer and warmer each day, and my A/C wasn't cooling at all. Duke came out right away and pointed out the horrible design of the microchannel condenser. These things SUCK, and I wish I knew that before I bought it 10 years ago.. He actually added a stop-leak chemical with the recharge of freon and checked for leaks-no more leaks! It's been working fantastic for the past several years since the repair, and the price he charged was very reasonable. When it comes time to replace, I'm calling Duke back! read more

My last review was 2 years ago for my air conditioning. I gave them 5 starts then. Fast forward, problems now with heater. Chava (same technician) came out 3 times trying to troubleshoot. Because it was "intermittent" problem, hard to troubleshoot The unit is 20 years old and decision was made to replace. Quote from Duke himself was far less than the two other quotes I received. One company wanted to replace heater, ducts and air conditioner. His crew, Jesus and Amador were excellent and worked hard to insulate ducts, seal vents and install heater. Immediately the next day the house was warmer in the morning. It passed the duct test today which two other companies said it would not and ducts needed replacing. Duke is honest, fair and gives Senior discounts. I will be recommending him to everyone I know. read more

Our AC went out and first we called the company that installed the AC; the owner looked at our furnace, saw it was 20 years old, and decided right away that was the issue even though we believed otherwise. He left us with a quote for $$$$ to replace the furnace. We called Dukes for additional troubleshooting and the gentleman came out, determined it not to be the furnace, within 10 minutes fixed our problem and charged us $100. We were very pleased not only with the money Dukes saved us but everything from scheduling the service call, notifications when the tech was on route and being on time, and lastly the service we received. My furnace was not working correctly, and Dukes Heating & Air Conditioning fixed it in ~30 mins. But soon after, the problem came back. I called back in and they said since it was past their 1 month warranty, they will have to charge another $100 flat service fee + any additional work hours. I was already unsatisfied with the fact that the amount of work they did was very minimal yet they still charged me $100 flat service fee. I would never work with Dukes Heating & Air Conditioning. They do not care about their customer, and they are not flexible with their terms. And the amount of mess they have left at my place was unbelievable. Their after clean-up just shows poor attitude to their customer(s). By the way, these guys seem to have no idea what they are doing nor do they check their surroundings because there was an air leak (if he paid attention to his surrounding), I am sure he would spotted that couple ducts were disconnected or not properly sealed. read more

Duke's installed our A/C system and later returned to upgrade some duct work. In both cases they did a fine job, and I got a lot of respect for Duke and the way he works. If I were writing a review of just those two experiences, I would have given at least 4 stars, maybe 5. But in mid-June I asked Duke to come back to estimate a smaller project in our bedroom. He said he'd get me a quote within a couple of days. Three weeks later, after many attempts to get the quote, and a promise more than a week ago to have it in one or two days, I still have nothing. Now I have learned that part of the delay resulted from some of his installers testing positive for COVID. But we're only talking about putting together a quote for a small project. I told Duke a few days ago that, while I wanted to work with him, if I didn't hear anything by Friday (today), I would assume he didn't want the job. No response. Bottom line: if you can get Duke to do your project, it will probably turn out very well, but you may have problems with that first part. read more

I'm not sure why the negative reviews? Of course he has to charge a service fee and of course he is going to mark up parts. He is trying to run a BUSINESS. In a BUSINESS you need to make a profit. You certainly can't do that by performing work for free or supplying free parts. Duke came to my house today, fixed the problem and replaced my filter. He said if the problem happens again he will need to replace a part but didn't think it was necessary UNLESS the problem happens again. If it happens again, he will order the part for me and install it free of charge within 30 days of his initial service call. Duke showed up within an hour of my call, was extremely polite and personable, fixed the problem quickly, and charged me a very fair price. No problems here, Duke is great! read more

He called to keep me posted on his ETA and when he arrived, was wearing a mask and very courteous. We prefer to keep our money in Fremont. 2. Duke came out himself to provide the bid, listened to our concerns and gave advice that actually addressed these issues. Others were clearly trying to sell something. Both, my wife and I appreciated this experience and agreed that if the price came in comparable, we would go with Duke. When it came to the install, Jesus and his team could not have respected our home and community more. We had a complete HVAC system install (heat/AC/Duct work) and each day they left the house cleaner than when they arrived. They were professional, kept us clearly up to date on next steps and were respectful of our neighborhood. Called them for a quote. Got a written quote that didn't include model number for the AC and furnace. Guy claimed he uses "Carrier Day and Night". Carrier, Day and Night are two different brands from United Technologies. While one is a premium brand the other is more mid market. They are NOt the same. When we decided to put in air conditioning, we had a hard case. Our ducts were old and too small, and we have an addition on a slab with no heat or air conditioning. In fact the first guy we asked for an estimate never got back to us, I guess because the job was too tough. Duke gave us a good solution. His crew was at our house for a week. They cut a lot of bigger holes in our floor and holes in the ceiling of our addition. All the vents look like they've been there forever. They fit perfectly. Every night they cleaned up. They were all nice guys, we didn't mind having them in the house at all. One little extra touch. I went to the side of the house and found one of my sprinkler heads there. I asked where they dug it out from so I could cap it. No worries. They had capped it when they put in the unit. We live across the street from an elementary school and our street gets very crowded at 8, when they came the first day. So they came earlier, before the parents arrived. That's service! The A/C works great, Duke took care of the state and local inspections, and I couldn't be happier. Give Duke a shot. read more

After another service company came to our house to fix the air condition an initial quote of around $700 (repair) or $10.000 replacement, Duke provided a 2nd opinion. he fixed the issue in 2 hours and for half the initial cost he fixed the system. $125 just to show up...... but on a Friday night, when its 90* and you're A/C is out, you'll do what you have to do. Nice enough when he (Duke) came out. Replaced a capacitor and said it would last the weekend (it didn't) Set up an appointment for the next Tuesday to install a new fan/blower. $90 service call, $220 for the motor. We'll check your attic as well to make sure things are OK nice I had some insulation clogging things up. OK fine. Seems fair. Never heard back until Tuesday as scheduled, (they were late). Started to unload their truck to start work and I asked for a quote since I had not received anything in writing to this point. Will say that he did not charge me that Friday when he came out. Would add it to the bill when the job was done. Again, fair enough.... So I ask for a quote. The repairman knows nothing and has to call Duke. (Here's where things get sticky) They must have lots of trouble hearing each other I guess because it took quite along time to get a simple number. $620+ dollars. Ever hear of Bait & Switch.??? After I got up off the ground (I fell over) told them to pack up an leave. Called Alton A/C. They were very busy since this was the hottest weekend/week of the year so far, but they managed to get a tech over. Confirmed the motor was in need of replacement and had a motor, but the mounting bracket wouldn't fit right. They took everything back to the shop, made an appointment for the next evening so I did not have to take more time off work and fixed everything. Pretty cool. (no pun intended) Oh yeah. Their quote, over the phone, $320.00. The bill I received. $320.00. Imagine that. An honest A/C company. I'm sure his version of the story will be a bit different, but much like the capacitor he installed, it won't hold up to the heat. PS. It's one star because you cannot give NO STARS.!!! read more

103 outside. AC was not working. 95 inside. Family hot and cranky. I was quite sure my good old AC Condenser just needed a freon charge. That's what "The last guy" did for me three years ago when I was worried I needed a complete new $6k system. This time around "The last guy" said the condenser was finally shot, but could sell me a used one for $2500 to avoid a complete ($8k now) system rebuild with the new refrigerant type. He was positive the freon level was fine. Sounded genuine and my notes said I liked this guy. Anyway, a second opinion seemed prudent. So: I called my favorite plumber for a recommendation of a different HVAC guy who could give me a second opinion. Enter DUKE. Duke is the real-deal honest businessman who explains everything well and fixes what needs to be fixed. He explained how the big service companies want to buy out the smaller guys and then push them to drive revenue by selling selling selling. One small freon charge and $250 later, my AC is cranking and family is comfortable and happy. Oh, and he said my good old AC unit is fine for years to come. Duke is friendly, personable, and a pleasure to work with. He told me he works hard to make sure the technicians who work for him follow his values. Not recommended. Go somewhere else. Our furnace was broken before Thanksgiving and we called around for a heating contractor. Duke's Heating was recommended by a cleaning duct company. We called Duke's and the man on the phone said he will be there the next few days without mentioning a charge for a service call. We checked Duke's heating website and we saw this "CONTACT US TODAY FOR FREE ESTIMATES ON OUR HEATING AND AIR-CONDITIONING SERVICES." on every page of their website. Duke's owner, Milton, came over to our house and he didn't present a contract for service call for my wife's signature before taking a look at the furnace. He went directly to the furnace and found a bad valve part. He told my wife the cost for repairs was like $425 and my wife text me for my approval. I told her no and we needed to find another company for a second opinion. Milton told my wife that she had to pay $95 dollars fee for service call. My wife was puzzled that she didn't know this before. She didn't sign anything before Milton looked at the furnace. I had no choice but gave him an approval to do the repair. He charged us least $425 dollars. Almost $250 bucks for that little valve part that you can buy the same part on line for $130 dollars. That was a huge mark-up! We tried to work this out with Milton Duke to settle this issue about $95 service call and Milton refused to cooperate with us. We weren't able to contact a second contractor for a second opinion. We filed a complaint with the California State License Board. Few weeks later, my wife came to the house and smell strong gas all over the house. My wife went to the furnace and heard a very strong hissing sound. She turned off the gas valve. We called PG&E and they sent a gas technician to take a look at the furnace and discovered that the valve part, installed by Milton Duke, was faulty. I emailed Milton that our furnace is broken and we want our money back. Milton came over to pick up the part and gave us a refund check. I will never use Duke's Heating again. read more

We have had Duke's do other work for us and we were extremely happy with their work at a very competitive price. So when our thermostat went dark last night and the air conditioner stopped working we of course gave them a call this morning. They had a crew out within an hour! They found the issue right away (blown fuse on the controller board), but kept digging until they found the root cause of the problem. A wire had worn through out by the compressor and was shorting out. I'm very impressed with their thoroughness and professionalism. I wish I could give them 10 stars. read more

Duke installed AC and new Furnace back in April. AC worked perfectly during the hot summer. Winter came around and time to turn on the heat. No heat just air. Called Duke on Monday and he came the next day. Turn on the heater and everything fired right up. Root cause possible air pocket in the pipes. Service from Duke have been excellent from the original installed to this one time service call. He also checked the air filter while he was here and reminded me to change it. Would recommend!! Duke helped us twice in two days. This review is for both times. For the first time - we tried to install a Nest thermostat and for some reason could not get power/connection from our furnace to the Nest thermostat. We called Duke in the morning and he was able to come out that afternoon. He helped us with our Nest issue, recommended a different WifI thermostat for compatibility reasons, and made some minor tweaks to our furnace. He was extremely nice, helpful, and responsive. For the second time - after installing the other Wifi thermostat that same day, there was no longer any power to our thermostat. We again called Duke (in the evening) and he was able to fit us in first thing the following morning. Duke came to our house, was able to fix the problem, and was extremely helpful.
