I had a very good experience with AJ Heating and Cooling. I had received several quotes from different companies and AJ was not the cheapest nor the most expensive. He was the only one who recommended we not only replace our 50+ year old ducts as he said we were getting significant loss from the ducts, but also move the registers to get more efficient heating and cooling in each room. The ducts had asbestos tape on them, so his team had to do a proper abatement, and they replaced our ducts. We also upgraded from a gas hvac system to a Mitsubishi heat pump system. The owner was there every day and personally responded to our questions. He came by to fine tune our 444 which is the piece that talks to the current ecobee thermostat. As a bonus, when he found out we wanted to replace our old gas water heater with a larger heat pump unit, he built an extension to the heat exchange platform and moved the hvac system over enough to give us the extra room without also needing to do a huge change to the hvac location. Additionally, his team's finishing work was very good. Because the registers were all moved from the walls to the ceiling, each register hole had to be patched and textured. When we color matched the wall when they were gone, the texture is so perfect we can't even see there is a patch there. Finally, they were very clean and tidy even using a vacuum while cutting the holes in the ceiling for the new registers. read more

Based on the yelp reviews, I expected AJ Heating & Cooling to be a good choice for an AC estimate. Boy was I wrong. Jose told me the ducts needed to be insulated which would cost some money after seeing the crawlspace and attic. The other AC contractor had told me my ducts were already insulated and he had taken photos showing it wrapped w insulation. I knew ajose was making it up. When I asked him about city inspector choking out the AC after it is installed, he asked if my 1 yr old Furnace had by been inspected by the futy. I said no. Then Jose said tge City would charge him a fine of at least $2500 when he went to file for an AC permit bc tge Furnace had jot been inspected. And he said he would have to pass on tge $2500-3000 fibs to me. I said that sounds strange Jose looked very nervous telling this. I knew he was lying. Last spring, I had AC installed, furnace replaced and all new ducting installed. Had 4 different contractors visit to give estimate. Only one physically went into the attic and foundation crawlspaces to inspect for quote--this was the owner Jose. He was on time, communicated well and and answered all my questions. Jose also pointed out that the same 6" duct running to our small bathrooms was the same size duct supplying our two largest rooms: the family and living rooms, noting this was not very efficient. They increased the duct size to the large rooms, including our master bedroom, and added additional vents. They also installed an additional return on the far side of the house; the results have been extraordinary. The house cools and warms quickly and temps are well balanced. They were done in two days. Having personally installed skylights and sun tunnels, I can say it takes some crawling and contorting one's body to get to our vents; but these guys got it done without any damage to our ceiling. I will note power was knocked out to a bathroom and a light fixture was dropped and dangled by its wiring--they fixed both these issues immediately on the 2nd day. They were clean, timely and passed the first inspection/home energy audit with flying colors. Their quote for just ac install and furnace replacement was actually the low bid. Going with them for replacing and adding duct work put us at 17k. I will note that due to "supply chain issues" the price went up to 1k, but having worked in general contracting for 30+ years, I felt this was reasonable--they were the only contractor to note that pricing on the ducting was going to increase. We're coming up on a year since the install and everything Jose installed is working well. read more

Jose and his team were very professional and prompt. We hired them to replace the ductwork in our house. They wore masks and booties, laid runners down throughout the house, and covered our belongings with plastic to protect them from debris. They vacuumed after they completed the work. Jose was very knowledgeable and answered all the questions we had. Prior to the duct replacement, the air flow to the master bedroom (located furthest from the furnace) was very poor. Jose said that our 50 year old ducts had a lot of leaks and weren't positioned properly. Jose also replaced the registers throughout the house with high flow vents and was able to double the airflow to our master bedroom. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Very professional, honest, informative, great communication and paperwork, and very quick turnaround. Our furnace died on us last weekend and we called AJ on Saturday to setup repair visit. Jose showed up on Monday as scheduled and diagnosed the problem. He thoroughly tested the system, explained the problem and offered 3 options: 1. Repair the 35 year old inefficient furnace by searching for an old, out of production, relay. 2. Install a new efficient basic single stage furnace. Comparable unit to what we had but more efficient and stronger. 3. Install a new efficient basic dual stage furnace. Together we discussed the pros and cons of each option - efficiency, direct costs, long term savings, etc. We touched on some higher-end options, but quickly agreed that they were beyond our need and budget. I had Jose redid the whole AC, Heater Furnace and duct system about 3 years ago in Fremont. It has been good so far with no problem. I'm very happy with it. My gas furnace wouldn't start, so I tried troubleshooting, following online videos and help, and couldn't identify the problem. I sent request for quotes to several vendors individually, and AJ was the first to respond. After reading reviews thoroughly, I chose AJ, even though they didn't have many recent Yelp reviews. I made an appointment, Jose came out and diagnosed the problem in 2 minutes. Even though the thermostat display looked good, it wasn't sending a signal to the furnace. He said I could replace it myself, or he could sell and install one he had with him, and indicated the price difference. He fiddled with the thermostat a bit more, removed and out back in the same batteries, which caused the thermostat to reset. So now it works again. He just charged me his standard service call fee, which was the lowest among the vendors I contacted. I very strongly recommend Jose and AJ heating & cooling. read more

I hired Jose twice. Both projects went pretty well. The more recent project especially impressed me. 1. They found the old air duct contained asbestos. They coordinated with Synergy, an asbestos company, to remove asbestos without having me talk to Synergy. Other contractors I got quotes from all asked me to hire an asbestos company by myself. 2. The leak test (required for city permit) showed a borderline pass, which later turned out the test was inaccurate. They could have done nothing because they passed the test anyway. However, Jose and his folks were disappointed by the borderline numbers, came to my home again with the leak test company and re-did the test. During the procedure, they found the leak test company didn't seal one vent correctly, which caused inaccurate test results. After the test company fixed that, the numbers looked much better. 3. I got quotes from two other companies. The price Jose gave was 25% lower than the others, and it includes asbestos removal and city permit application. read more

Can't believe I never wrote a review back when I had Jose and his crew out to replace my entire hvac system. My old system was for sure on its last legs. I had multiple quotes but Jose was the only one to sketch out my house. I remember when he did that my general contractors and I looked at each other with a look of "we got a real one here" I had a string of "used car salesman" types trying to sell me HVAC systems. It had become a joke between me & my contractors. Jose was different. He took it seriously and we could tell. He was honest and told me I needed new ducts (which I knew, but some companies tried to tell me they were fine, they were not). Turned out Jose was able to squeeze me in same day and was able to diagnose and do a temporary fix. My air conditioning unit has been broken for the last 2 years or so. I had it checked by a couple of people, 1 said it was a busted motor, the other said the unit was too small. Costs for each fix was too expensive to me. Last few days the heat was unbearable so I called AJ and they set me up with a same day appointment between 5 to 6. I get home at around 5 and Jose was already done with the repairs and checking the temperature of each vent.
