    MACADAMIA NUT HUMMUS
    Olesya P.

Came here for Sunday brunch with some friends. We didn't have a reservation. But we were seated without a wait. We never been to Duke's since we are not from California. Ambience was very vibrant and fun. Definitely the place was busy. The view was amazing, definitely enjoyed the view. Service was nice and friendly. Food was decently priced for the area, since everything is much more expensive, compare to other places Duke's was deftly priced. We had some crab wontons (they are deep fried) so I don't try them because I don't eat deep fried food. We had some sashimi that was pretty good. Also we had macadamia nut hummus that was great. I think was my favorite dish. For the main I had tuna bowl which was very good, definitely a large portion. I had a mocktail that was made with passion fruit juice and it was very good. Overall very good experience.

We were able to walk in and get seated with a great view of the ocean. We ordered a cocktail and tasted great! We got the banana pancakes and the fish tacos for brunch and they did not dissppont. Calamari appetizer was great too! Highly recommend this place for great food and great views

Finally got to try Duke's in La Jolla and I was pleasantly surprised. These establishments by the water like George's at the Cove (vomit) don't even try anymore. The service was great and we had Joey to thank for that. We came during lunch for a corporate event for a colleagues baby shower and the crab ragoons were the best I've ever had not to mention their other apps. I ordered one of their plate specials and I was impressed with their bok choy side and Mac salad. Nothing was bland and the chicken breast was great. My dirty martini was as it should and the desserts were fabulous. There's no diversity there but that's La Jolla for you. Be prepared for ladies clutching their purses as you walk by. *rolls eyes Great ocean view and plenty of nice seating everywhere. Arrive before the lunch to dinner rush if you can!

Stunning location. Tons of families with young children. I have my own kiddo and wow was it loud - even outside. I sat outside with a lovely view of the sunset. I had the macadamia crusted White Sea bass. It is a yellow on seafood watch if you care about those things like I do. They were out of the ahi sashimi. The veggies were fresh and yummy. The fish was perfectly done. It was a small piece of fish which was fine as I wasn't very hungry but boy was that expensive. Nice wine selection. Service was friendly. Seagulls were even friendlier and very bold trying to steal food. Giving it 3 stars because the price wasn't worth it. I agree with previous reviewers.

    * catching up on old backlogged drafts so this review may be a bit out of date After our morning dive we wanted to spend the day at La Jolla so we stopped by Duke's before our beach day to grab a bite to eat! The restaurant was big and we were seated right away. We got drinks and food to share. We got the fish tacos, coconut shrimp, and Korean sticky ribs. They were all yummy but the coconut shrimp was my favorite! The restaurant is located in a nice area walking distance to more shops and the beach!

We dined with a large party, and requested weeks in advance to sit outside but they were unwilling to accommodate. Sitting in the restaurant is so hot. If you're vegan or vegetarian, don't dine here for dinner. The only veggie dish that wasn't a salad was ravioli and it was the weirdest ravioli I've ever tasted, I couldn't even finish it. The waitress was kind, however she split the checks wrong so we had to pay for a dish that wasn't part of our check. Personally, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant and will never dine here again. However, many people in our party did enjoy it so you might too

We came from out of town and went on a detour to Dukes based on a recommendation Food: came out fast and fresh and clean Service: very sweet and helpful checked on us frequently Ambiance: you can't beat the view !!

Visited La Jolla cove and wanted a light dinner and a drink. Our friend had recommended this place so we made reservations on a Sunday at 5ish and had no problem. They have a bar upstairs that had a burger special, but we sat downstairs and had a nice view of the ocean. We were well taken care of by our waiter, Jacob. I ordered a mojito which was so good and refreshing, and ordered the crab cakes which were also very good. They had an amazing meyer lemon remoulade sauce and pickled seaweed on the side which was amazing. My friend and I split the rocket salad with beets and goat cheese, and it was good as well. Our whole group split a hula pie for dessert. Very yummy with extra chocolate sauce and macadamia nuts. I would definitely go here again!!

5-star for the view, our food and the service. I wasn't impressed by the cocktails unfortunately (tried both the hibiscus Paloma and margarita) but overall it was a good experience. My seared ahi tuna bowl was delicious and the view over the ocean was fantastic!

I've been to the Duke location in Malibu and since visiting SD was able to snag a day of dinner reservation. Quickly sat once arrived and got a beautiful view overlooking the water. It was a chilly night but nearby heaters kept us cozy. I tried the lavender pina colada - tasty and refreshing, we all shared the crispy coconut shrimp and crab wontons. I ordered the roasted lobsters - I can never say no to a lobster. And for dessert the three of us shared a slice of hula pie - perfect end to the night. A great meal at Dukes!

Update We returned on a packed house night. The teriyaki steak was great again and i had the fish of the day. Swordfish. Excellent Ambience. Total Surf Vibe.

We made a last minute reservation for lunch on my sons birthday, and I'm so glad that we did! They were so accommodating for a last minute request, they even had a birthday card for my son! The view on the patio is worth a visit, even though we didn't have a sunny day it was still so beautiful. We ordered the Poke Tacos which were my fav, all fresh ingredients, Korean Sticky Ribs had great flavor and tenderness , Crispy Coconut Shrimp just so yummy right amount of crunch, Crab Wontons we all agreed this was a crowd favorite, Caesar Salad, and Fish Tacos were really good too.

    Happy 31st anniversary to us!!!!

Dukes was stop one on our 24 hour whirl wind anniversary trip. Right on the main strip in La Jolla and unbelievable ocean views made even better by great service from Gracie. We've been to I think every Dukes on the planet and we love this one. So you have to start with their famous mai tai. That drink combined with the view is just the perfect start to a great 24 hours. We had the pork wontons delicious. My wife had a crab and shrimp salad equally delicious and I had the Famous Dukes burger, which I loved so is the perfect first stop on this crazy 24 hours.

Duke's La Jolla Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Duke's La Jolla

    Can I request outdoor seating?

    Yes

Will they make brunch item on weekday?

    Best to call. Christmas Season!

What is the cost of valet parking?

We didn't have to valet park as there was plenty of street parking so I'm not sure. Lots of metered parking all around.

    Is parking difficult for disabled?

There's street parking for handicapped but it's not easy to nab a spot. We had to park 2 blocks away and roll there.

Does Duke's air sports on tv?

I'm pretty sure I remember TV's at the bar.

    Is the restaurant dog friendly?

I have been there several times and have never seen a dog in tow. It is kinda fancy , and there are stairs. Also , it is open to the water , so may not be very safe for a dog.

What is the price for Sunday brunch?

    Price is a la cart.

    Do you take reservations?

Yes! Make reservations on Open Table!…

Do they take walk-ins or must be a reservation?

They take walk ins. But it's better to do it during the week.

Do they serve breakfast food during the weekdays?

I would say no... they open at 11

    Any vegan options?

zero options. they were able to remove the cheese and sour cream from the nachos... so for $13 you can get tortilla chips with 2 tablespoons of black beans and a tiny scoop of salsa and guacamole.

    Is dukes dog friendly?

    No dogs allowed :(

Hi I tried to call for reservations but no one picked?

I made my reservation online. Try using their Website or open table.

    Can I make a reservation?

Yes, we usually make reservations because they can get busy.

    Is Duke's dog friendly?

No dogs. Keep them at home.

Do I need to make a reservation for this weekend? Thank you

Restaurants with ocean view outdoor patios are at a premium during the pandemic. You could get in, but don't take a chance. Use Open Table-- very easy.

Do they still have happy hour during COVID? I don't see it on their website

No, as of 8/18/20 they are not doing happy hour.

How is the parking? Do you have to pay or is it validated?

Park on the street, or at the local paid parking lots.

Do we have to reserve an outside table?

You can try, but it's not always guaranteed.

Do I need to make a reservation if I want to sit outside during happy hour on Friday?

Upstairs outside is first come first serve no reservations

The ravioli was the standout of the night, thin pasta with just enough filling for a delightful bite. The bucatini all'amatriciana wasn't quite what I'm accustomed to, the guanciale was ground rather than diced, and the sauce leaned more toward a meat sauce with an oily finish, not really my style, though the pasta itself was cooked well al dente. The steak, on the other hand, was excellent. Cocktails were great, and the staff were attentive throughout. For dessert, the trio was a nice way to sample a few things, though I wish they offered smaller sampler portions instead of full-size pieces. The Basque cheesecake was excellent and the semifreddo was perfect with a nice crust. The chocolate torte was good but couldn't compete with the other two. Overall a strong dinner spot in La Jolla, especially for pasta lovers and sunset views.

We called an hour ahead to reserve a table and luckily they had availability. We ordered the crudo and octopus as appetizers. For our entrees, we ordered the pistachio pesto pizza, raviolli, and beef ziti. The pizza was my favorite (i love anything pistachio) especially enjoyed the pistachio pesto. I appreciate the thin dough of raviolli and the ziti was good. Overall food was good. Our server's name was Kevin, he was friendly and gave great service.

However, Jade ensured that we enjoyed our meal at the Shorehouse Kitchen. At brunch, my go to dish is the French toast that will tell me the quality and care from the kitchen. I was blown away at how delicious the French Toast was. The name is the "CARAMELIZED TAHITIAN VANILLA BEAN FRENCH TOAST with Fresh Blueberries or Bananas and Chantilly Cream, or a Grilled Pineapple". Jade gave away the secret ingredient to me and I was impressed. An applied Maillard reaction with brown sugar brought the French Toast a new level of yumminess. The Chantilly Cream took it over the top, not to sweet and very creamy. Yum!!! Also tried the "RASPBERRY TRUFFLE MOCHA St. George Vanilla Bean Vodka. Raspberry Liqueur, Callebaut Belgian Chocolate, Espresso, Steamed Milk, Chantilly Cream" . AMAZING!!! The Shorehouse Kitchen is a gem with fantastic food and service. When I arrived, the server was about to seat me even though my family member hadn't arrived yet. However, the manager asked me to wait outside until my entire party was present. She explained that because they serve food quickly, they didn't want to seat me or have me order coffee while I was waiting for the second person. Once we were seated at 11:00, it took about 25 minutes, and me having to flag down our server, before we were able to place our food order. What made this especially confusing was that the table behind us, a party of seven, was seated with only two people present. They were served coffee while waiting for the remaining five members of their group, which seemed inconsistent with the explanation I had been given. The food itself was good, although the chicken sausage I ordered was not served hot. During the meal, no one checked on us to ask how everything was or whether we needed anything. At the end, we also had to get the attention of another server in order to receive our bill. The service has always been excellent on previous visits, which is why this experience was disappointing. That said, we've enjoyed this restaurant for a long time, and it's one of our family's favorite places to eat. Because of our past experiences, I'd be happy to return and hope this was simply an unusually busy or off day for the team.

The restaurant is located at 1235 Coast Bivd; while street parking is available there, it was extremely difficult to find a spot due to the heavy traffic from visitors to La Jolla Cove-you can essentially consider parking there impossible. Instead, we found street parking on Prospect Street, just one block away, and walked about five minutes to reach the restaurant. My friend and I ordered the Lemon Blueberry Ricotta Pancakes, the Cove Combo, and the Plain Pancakes. The location of the restaurant is beautiful as you are right on the beach and you have a great view of the ocean and the seals that hang around the area. Supposedly people have complained about a "fishy smell", the ocean does smell fishy and the restaurant can't control the environment. Megan was our waitress and she was amazing. She was full of energy, polite, professional, and checked on us often to make sure everything was going well. I ordered the Fig & Goat Cheese Burger, medium rare, and a Vanilla Italian Soda. The soda was refreshing and wasn't like your usual soda. The vanilla flavor was not overpowering and I enjoyed it. The wait time for the burger was a bit long, but I didn't mind as I watched the seals play on the beach. Unfortunately, the burger was not medium rare, but that wasn't a big deal as it was full of flavor and juicy. The meat itself had a nice hearty flavor that pair nicely with the goat cheese. Surprisingly, goat cheese on a burger is a great combo that brings it all together. The sweet and savory with a creamy texture made me craving for more. The bun was soft and firm as well. I ordered tater tots on the side and they were perfect. Golden and crispy on the outside while being soft and fluffy on the inside. They make their ranch in-house and it was one of the best tasting ranch sauces that I've tried. The ranch was light, refreshing, and had a dill flavor. Overall, I enjoyed my time very much. The meal was a nice refresher that didn't make me feel guilty or tired afterwards. I will be coming back.

After enjoying Nine-Ten for over 15 years and close to 100 visits, it has been a pleasure to…read morerediscover it once again. After a stretch of time, particularly during the COVID period, when dining out was limited, returning has been especially rewarding, including experiencing their breakfast and lunch offerings. The service remains excellent, and both the coffee and dishes stand out. The pancakes and short rib panini, in particular, feel like signature items well worth trying. We made our 6 PM reservation well in advance and were promptly greeted and seated by the hostess in a cozy, romantic spot--perfect for me and my hubby. The presentation throughout the meal was beautiful. The ambiance was relaxed and casual, though the décor felt a bit loud and slightly outdated. To start, my husband enjoyed their homemade sourdough bread with whipped butter, and they thoughtfully provided a gluten-free bread option for me--which was absolutely amazing. We also shared the hamachi sashimi appetizer. While the presentation was exquisite, the sauce it was served with was a bit overpowering for our taste, as we're more accustomed to sashimi without added sauces. For our entrées, my husband had the ribeye and I ordered the lamb. Both dishes were outstanding--cooked to perfection, incredibly tender, and easy on the palate. We couldn't even finish our meals, but they tasted just as delicious the next day. Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely recommend this place.
