However, there's a basic principle that businesses sometimes lose sight of: customers may initially be shocked by a price increase, but if the quality remains consistent, the price is usually forgotten. People don't necessarily remember exactly what something cost one, three, or five years ago, but they absolutely remember the experience. When I got my lobster roll, my first thought was, "This looks like half the lobster they used to give you." I figured maybe I was remembering it wrong, so I went through some old Yelp photos. I wasn't. The rolls from a few years ago had easily twice the amount of lobster, if not more. Judging by some of the recent reviews, I'm apparently not the only person who has noticed. I would have genuinely rather paid twice the price and gotten the lobster roll I remembered than pay what I did for what I received today. And truthfully, I couldn't even tell you what I paid three years ago, because it didn't matter. What I remembered was the quality. This has always been a premium establishment, and I've never had a problem paying premium prices for it. Unfortunately, the price is still premium, but the experience no longer is. And $6 for a small bottle of Coke was just insult to injury.

Lucky's Malibu announces its impending failures via a badly designed imitation of the facade of the original restaurant grafted onto the cut and paste flat wall architecture of the far side of the Cross Creek Mall. Upon entry, the main dining room / bar demonstrated the ambient noise level of a 1940s German steel mill during an Allied bombing raid. There is zero intimacy, warmth or charm offered. in case you didn't know, very loud dining rooms are almost always a design / business choice. They promote stress, encourage the heavy drinkers who relish these types of environments (a choice that is good for the bottom line but not diners), and create rapid table turnover. Not a great combination for an alleged "fine dining" establishment. intimate conversation disappears after about 45dB and at 70dB people start to experience physical reactions (including higher cortisol levels, muscular tension and vigilance) that make customers want to get up from their table rather than linger over dinner. The food was "OK". My wife ordered lamb chops and I had a bone in New York. The prices were quite high, but not astronomical, assuming the meat had been better prepared. It was "OK". The appetizers were a disaster. Grilled peach and prosciutto yielded peaches that were not grilled, low quality grainy ricotta and mediocre prosciutto. Bland and over priced. The iceberg wedge salad was large but was bland and ungenerous, with the allegedly associated salad dressing and other assorted salad ingredients. Service? Adequate. Polite, but rushed. Our server was hurried and conducted "big smile" performative check- ins that felt as if they had no discernible purpose other than to move us through courses and turn tables. I always assume that this style of service is not the server's fault, but a management choice. I am also willing to admit that the server was likely unable to conduct anything close to a genuine interest in our dinner experience because of the noise. Lucky's in Montecito attracts a very different crowd. More professional and reserved. The night we were at the Malibu location, it seemed to attract a lot of obnoxious, rude and badly dressed people who were advertising their real or fantasized connection to "the industry" by wearing t shirts, shorts, hoodies or otherwise dressing like slobs. We were profoundly relieved to exit Lucky's. Not my idea of how to drop $400+

New to the SoCal area, Duke's was recommended to me as a fun place with good food and a good atmosphere. My in-laws were in town and with the weather finally being nice again, we decided to give it a shot. We heard the seats by the window facing the ocean fill up quickly, so we opted to make our reservation at 11:30AM for when Duke's opened. Duke's has valet parking (what restaurant off the PCH doesn't) which made it easy. We checked into our reservation a little early, and the employees at the host stand pointed us to the bar area where we could wait and get a drink if we wanted until our table was ready. We had a quick drink in the bar while enjoying the view, and the bartender was friendly and efficient. Shortly after, our table was ready and we proceeded to the host stand and was brought to our table. We had a table with a gorgeous view. We ordered more drinks, appetizers, lunch, and of course the Hula Pie, which we thought we wouldn't be able to finish but amazingly it was gone in an instant. While the food was fantastic and the view was great, that alone doesn't make a restaurant excellent and automatically warrant a review. What made this an exceptionally wonderful lunch were the employees. All of the employees we met were fantastic, but the two we interacted with the most were Cody, our server, and Calee (sp?) the floor manager. These two were the epitome of what excellent customer service is. They managed to constantly check in on us (even though the lunch rush was in full swing), give us recommendations, joke around with us, and were just all around genuinely nice and caring people. As someone in the hospitality field, I find that you can teach people how to execute without much difficultly, but caring is something that most people have to be born with, and Cody and Calee had it in spades. The fact that they genuinely and sincerely cared about us is what made our lunch memorable. We haven't tried many of the restaurants in Malibu yet, but the level of service we got at Duke's has set the bar high! Keep up the great work Cody and Calee! read more

We found ourselves stuck in extreme 4th of July traffic on our way from Palm Springs to Malibu. What was supposed to be a 2-hour and 30-minute drive turned into a never-ending 4-hour ordeal! Exhausted and hungry, we decided to make a pit stop at Duke's in Malibu. Now, it's not exactly a foodie paradise, but we were desperate. The fish tasted way too fishy, and the "champagne" was downright dreadful. Since the wait for a table was an hour long, we settled at the bar, gazing out through the huge windows that showcased the expansive ocean view. If you look closely, you'll notice that Duke's is perched on massive rocks, making it impossible to access the beach from there. If you want to set foot on the sand, it's better to head to one of Malibu's beautiful beaches. But hey, sitting there and not being stuck in the car was a relief. Would I go back? Probably not, but if I find myself in a traffic nightmare again, I might give it another shot, thanks to the easy parking (though it costs $7.00). You can basically walk in, grab a cocktail, leave the restaurant, and leave your car there for a few hours without any worries. I've heard their happy hour is fantastic, and Taco Tuesday is supposedly awesome. However, my friend and I both agree that the food quality is somewhat lacking. But during those happy hour times, you can score a great deal! Plus, considering nothing in Malibu comes cheap, you can kind of put Duke's on the list of "cheap eats" during certain times. So, grab a good parking spot, enjoy the deals, and relax during the chaotic times of Los Angeles traffic. read more

For many years my husband and our good friends spend every birthday, anniversary with each other at Dukes in Malibu. The location is great, the view is super and the food has always been good. However, tonight we had the worst service we have ever had at any restaurant I have ever been to. Our server was disheveled and could have cared less about serving us. She never smiled once (nor did the other servers who were there tonight). After the first drinks and starters arrived, the server passed by no less than 5 times over the course of 20 minutes or so without making any attempt to see if we wanted anything else. Our starter plates were never cleared and when dinner arrived, she tried to set down the dinner plates without clearing the used plates away. We objected until the used plates were cleared. That's the way the whole dinner experience went. Extremely poor service and management was nowhere to be seen, so there was no opportunity for him to see or help remedy the situation. We were extremely disappointed and although we may go back, if we experience this again, we'll be looking to celebrate all our important occasions elsewhere. read more

Had Sunday buffet brunch here today. The restaurant has a dated old Hawaii feel, but was clean. Maybe the other reviewer had some odor herself. The quality was good and the dishes well prepared. The french toast with coconut syrup, yellowtail ceviche, ahi poke,caesar salad and eggs benedict were all excellent. Quite a combo. The roast beef was just OK. There was also a chicken teriyaki and salmon hot dishes I did not try. Plenty of bagels and lox too. Desserts were topped by chocolate dipped coconut macaroons and chocolate dipped strawberries. Service was fine although our server disappeared at points during our visit. My Bloody Mary was tasty. Anyone looking for a gourmet dining experience right on the water is looking in the wrong place. Duke's is casual, family style with a price premium for the on the water location. It's touristy, but the quality and price is not unreasonable for the location, in LA terms. I was thrilled to discover that LA has a Duke's. I first experienced this restaurant while visiting Hawaii. Reservations are recommended, and valet parking is the best option when visiting here. Alternatively, parking on Street is available, but it can be challenging on a busy street. The customer service was excellent, and our server was extremely friendly and attentive. Duke's offers amazing ocean views, which enhance the dining experience. The ambiance is laid-back with a Hawaii vibe, which adds to the charm. I tried the banana nut pancakes, which were delicious, topped with berries, coconut syrup, and macadamia nuts. The breakfast sandwich was also tasty, featuring crispy bacon, eggs, avocado, and tomatoes. The potatoes were slightly cold and could have been crispier, but they were seasoned well. The food is 5 stars. I had a salmon with rice, avocado, grapefruit and Harris's and ginger sauce. The food was very delicious.i had a few drinks (black salt Bloody Mary) and I enjoyed it!!the service wasn't that great. The table in front of me got a very good service but not us. I asked fora few small things from my server and she completely forget. After 10 min of waiting I asked a different worker to bring me salt and paper he said no problem and never came back. In the end of my meal, I found out that I had a black hair ( mine is brown) in the Harris's sauce. The manager didn't even came up to the table which I think is very unprofessional and send the server to ask us if we want any desert in the house. My son & I went here for lunch yesterday at around 2:30pm. They told us there was a 30-45 minute wait--sucks. They never mentioned that there was hardly any wait time @ the Barefoot bar which also had many tables including a patio overlooking the ocean. I had to find out from one of the busboys. Anyway, we got seated outside on the patio-nice. My son ordered fish & chips & I ordered the Fish Special which was Herb crusted Opa. My son's fish was burned! My opa was very good, so I told the waitress that my son did not like his fish, which was burned & ordered the opa for him. The bill came & she charged us anyway for the burned fish. I also had to ask her twice for a glass of water. This was really bad service, so I cannot recommend Duke's, even though the Opa was very good. I came in last night with my family for thanks giving dinner. The food was great the staff was nice. But this morning I realized that valet parking guys took my Mark Jacob black bag and Chanel sun glasses. Took my employment check and very wired some paperwork from side pocket which included my car insurance and registration. So no matter how good the restaurant is, or how well they treat u if guys steal from ur car and u come home feeling robbed that restaurant to me sucks. Do not ever go even near it. DUKES IN MALIBU IS NOT THE PLACE TO REST AND ENJOY YOUR TIME. So if u ever decide to visit make sure to take all ur belongings including car seats and floor mats. I am sure when u come back all of it will be gone. If I had a choice I would give that place and the service zero star that is how upset I am and irritated. read more

My family has been going to Duke's for the past 6 years. We celebrate almost any and every special occasion here. The view is spectacular. The atmosphere is fun and casual for Sunday brunches on the patio. Dinners we like to sit inside at a window booth. On a clear night you can spot dolphinswhile enjoying your dinner. We've never had a bad meal here. The food seriously never disappoints. The caesar salad is fantastic, as is any parmesan crusted fish. There's a dessert that tastes like pancakes and it's amazing. My only complaint would be the service on Sunday's the past few times we've gone has been slow. That won't stop us from coming back though. We love it! read more

This was my first time coming to this place and my overall experience was okay. It's right by the water, which is very helpful. Valet parking, which was mandatory, I didn't like. I like parking or choosing what I prefer to do. The staff in general was good.I got the Arugula & Farro which is always safe, and the vegetables were done well. Then I got the Roasted Duke's Fish which was fresh and good. It had a nice lemony zing to it, which I enjoy and a tinge of vinaigrette. Prices were decent for the area. The main issue is the actual traffic since the PCH is always packed, since there are so many lights, and people that come to the beach in the summer. read more

I absolutely love this place and miss it more than I can say! It holds such a special place in my heart. One of the things that makes it stand out is the spacious private room they offer for celebrations, it's perfect for hosting birthdays, intimate gatherings, or special occasions with friends and family. Their menu has so many great options, especially for vegetarians, which I really appreciated. Everything I tried was flavorful and thoughtfully prepared. Customers Beware: This restaurant is full of thieves who will steal your property and refuse to do anything about it. My wife's purse was stolen at this restaurant from the back of her chair and when the issue was brought to the manager's attention, he did nothing about it. In addition, the manager lied about the restaurants past about no robberies, but after a quick look on yelp all of his lies were exposed. It is baffling how such a high end restaurant is filled with thieves in place of staff. Awesome atmosphere, great food. We were seated quickly and treated well. Only drawback was portions seemed a bit smaller for the price. Quality was good, though, and service excellent. Chelsea was awesome - kind, friendly, bright smile, attentive to our whole family, and even chased down an answer to an allergy-related question we had regarding a possible food additive (which turned out to be absenr - furthering how impressed I was with their food quality). Duke's Malibu is hands down one of my favorite spots! From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with stunning ocean views that set the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable meal. So happy the stay home orders have been lifted. Dukes was the last restaurant we visited one day prior to Stay Home Orders and Dukes was the first restaurant we visited as soon as restaurants opened. Yay! We start off our meal with a cocktail. 805 for him and Wine for me. Then we order their delicious nachos and soak in the view off the cliffs. Service was good and we got seated right by the window. Spectacular view!!! Drinks were great especially Bloody Mary and Poke tacos . However, main dishes : Opah fish, and mahi mahi were like $28 each dish !!!seriously , Opah was no taste and both dishes are small portions, unexpected decorated...so so simple .. I used to come to Duke's in Hawaii and came here with a fried for quick lunch. Parking was impossible to find, we went up and down of PCH three times and could find a single spot, ended up paying $6 for valet. Now for the wait. Ended up waiting for almost an hour to get a table. Our server was too busy waiting on other taken and we felt ignored most of the time. We ordered nachos, which were fine, poke and some tacos. We were a large party and gratuity was already going to be included so guess he didn't care at all about manners and having a nice interaction. Food and setting were great at least!

Gtfoh... Neptune's Nut is not worth the stop unless you like being bent over like a Las Vegas hooker. My suggestion is to drive down the Pacific Coast Highway (it's one of the most epic drives in the US), go right past this hell hole, and stop at one of the highly rated restaurants in Malibu... Even a basic amount of salt would have made a huge difference. The burger came with their house-made potato chips, which again looked great, but unfortunately had the exact same problem. They tasted like plain fried potatoes with seemingly no salt or seasoning at all. I don't know if the kitchen was simply having an off day, but overlooking something as fundamental as seasoning, especially salt, is pretty disappointing for food at this price point. There was clearly effort put into the presentation, but presentation only gets you so far when the food itself lacks flavor. Great location, excellent hospitality, and very friendly service, but based on the beer and food I had, there's a lot of room for improvement in the kitchen and brewery.
