The first time I had Dumpling Xi was in Barcelona, and I've been thinking about it ever since. So when I found out there was a location in New York, I obviously had to relive the moment! The menus are noticeably different. The Barcelona location offers a wider variety, which I was hoping to see here as well. I ordered the boiled shrimp, fish roe, and pork dumplings. They were good and still very juicy, but they didn't quite match the flavor I remember from Barcelona. I also tried the spicy chicken leg combo. It was decent. The chicken was braised and tender, but overall a bit lacking in flavor. Service was great. The staff were friendly and efficient. That said, the overall experience didn't live up to what I had in Barcelona, which was a little disappointing. :( read more

Their dumplings are northern influenced, and have a really chewy texture. We got the pork + corn dumplings and soy-marinated chicken leg. Dumplings were dough-y and juicy, super delicious. Chicken leg was extremely tender -- the meat practically fell of the bone and super juicy. Came across Dumpling Xi, and decided to give it a go. To start, meals are super affordable here! Everything is ~$10-18 - nice for a quick and cheap meal! The only thing I'd say is that I think it is supposed to be partially self serve? I was kind of confused by how it's supposed to work - came in and a server told us to order via the QR code on the table, but then another server came and wanted to take our order. There were notes in the restaurant that some items were self serve and available at the front (I believe they were some additional sauces on top of the ones available at each table), so was a bit confused by the concept. To start, we got one of the mini hot pots to share - the Chicken Leg Combo Pot (comes with tofu skin, broccoli, and marinated egg). The chicken leg was SUPERR tender - literally comes right off the leg. At first, we asked for the knife, but after the server told us we didn't need one because of how tender it was, we ended up using our utensils. The chicken literally came off as I was taking it off the leg with my fork. I love how it also came with veggies (broccoli), and a full egg! The sauce was also savory and delicious - we ordered some rice which paired perfectly with the sauce leftover. The chicken leg was so good we ordered another chicken leg on the side (only ~$5!!) which was super tender as well. The dumplings were super affordable as well ($13/12 pieces of fried dumpling). They were interesting as I've never had corn in my dumplings, but were great as well! Overall, I'd definitely recommend coming here for a nice, quick, and affordable meal. read more

I had no idea this is a massively popular chain in China but I was super excited to try after seeing corn, shrimp, and pork dumplings on the menu! There's a variation of dumplings and most have shrimp but there is 2 options without (celery + pork and corn + pork). There are way more non fried options than fried but both times I got fried! The shrimp pork and chive fried option is so good and comes with about 12 dumplings for $15. They package to-go orders SO well - they have packaging to encase each individually dumpling and then an insulated bag as well. They include sauces and utensils. The shrimp tastes extremely fresh and the dumpling itself is juicy. When I dined in, they seemed to have a leaking issue from the ceiling but it didn't really detract from the experience other than having a few less tables. The fried pork and corn dumplings ($13 for 12) were delish!! The corn adds a hint of sweetness, and dine in you can mix your own sauce with soy sauce, chili oil, garlic paste, vinegar and sesame oil. We also got the beef and wood ears - portion was small for $7 but flavor and texture was fresh and good. They're really hot once you get them so wait for them to cool. A couple of us wanted to try some soup dumplings. We stumbled upon Dumpling Xi. We went on a Friday evening and it wasn't very crowded. There were a few groups dining in. We sat ourselves. The ordering was different--we had to scan a QR code to place orders. We decided to order three different items and share. I ordered the shrimp with chives and egg dumplings, while one ordered the celery and pork dumplings and someone else ordered the beef and vegetable soup pot with pinto bean broth. Then we ordered rice and beef mixed with mushrooms. The soup pot was the winner. It was so flavorful and I mixed some chili oil with the broth. The celery and pork dumplings were also a big hit with our table. The beef with mushrooms tasted good to me but my friend whose Chinese was not impressed. The service was good, very attentive. Tried this place on a whim. Overall, I'd recommend it! We ordered the edamame, beef and onion steamed dumplings ($14.99/20 pieces on one plate) and beef and onion fried snowflake dumplings ($8.99/6 pieces on one plate). The edamame was surprisingly delicious- just the right amount of salt as well as crunch to the bite. The steamed dumplings were what I'd expect: firm skin with some juice on the inside. Lastly, the fried snowflake dumplings (named for their snowflake appearance if I had to guess?) were not too heavy despite their fried nature. These dumplings are delicious! They are MADE TO ORDER. And their ingredients are made fresh every day! (Unlike some other unnamed dumpling places.). And you can TASTE the difference. Limited menu but my favorites are the 1) zucchini egg 2) shrimp and chives (avail in-store only) 3) celery pork. They also have a pork neck appetizer for like $6 that is so delicious. The sauce bar has finely grated garlic which is a nice touch. The only slight minus is I wish they had even one actual veggie dish (salad or boiled bok choy or something) not just those green seaweed salads. I will safely say - other than dumplings made by my mom, by hand, at home, these are the best dumplings I ever had. Place is really clean and service is prompt. Food comes out fast too! The ambiance is very nice + spacious ! I'm very disappointed that the menu has changed, you can no longer get 12 fried dumplings as one order which was a great deal when they first opened. Now you have the option to place 2 orders of fried dumplings which is more costly ! I have suggested most customers like to have a fried noodle order with their fried dumplings. Tho, they do suggest their broth noodles which I have tried several version and not very fond of the taste. For these reasons I will not rate my experience. Since this is a fairly new restuarant, I believe in supporting new local businesses.
