15/10 -- an absolute gem! Coming from California and spending the entire day running around New York trying to find the best food, we somehow stumbled upon this absolute gem in Chinatown -- and I'm so glad we did. We had our toddler with us, and from the moment we walked in, we were met with the most incredible hospitality. The food was absolutely phenomenal, and I can honestly say this is a meal I'll remember and crave until the next time I'm lucky enough to have it again. Coming from the Bay Area, I thought we had pretty much tried it all when it comes to amazing food... but boy, was I wrong. Every bite was incredible, and the flavors completely blew me away. The restaurant itself was also so cute! And you can tell from the moment you walk in that dumplings are the star of the show -- they make sure you know it, and honestly, they deserve the spotlight. And a special shoutout to our waitress, Michelle, who was so incredibly kind and welcoming. She kept a smile on our faces throughout the entire meal and made the experience even more memorable. The dumplings were hot and steamed in 15 minutes like it was advertised. The staff is nice and it's fairly cute in there. The soup was delicious and it paired really well with the soy sauce and chili sauce. Both those together really elevated the dumpling. Went on a Saturday at around 1:30PM in a party of 3, the restaurant was almost full but we managed to get seating immediately. The food didn't really stand out much to me, to be honest but, it wasn't bad either. I think the dumplings could've been hotter. It was kinda lukewarm. I'm pretty sure the dumplings are made in-house, I could be wrong. I like the beef with the cucumber but they definitely could've given more beef. I'd be interested in trying the fried dumplings and other non-dumpling dishes next time but not sure if I'd be going back any time soon. The interior design was very simple and aesthetic, I liked it. After my party egregiously received a red card from neighboring Dim Sum restaurant for long wait of long line attaining a table to be blatantly ejected, we choose not to wait. This reminded me of SNL's sketch "Big Dumb Line." My party came to Grandma's by the lure of "dumplings" in the business name and the prospect of no wait time as this cafe was mostly vacant. The business name is the lure of grandma's home cooking for wholesome comfort food. My party are the only Asian Americans dining as all other patrons were non-Asians. I ponder with wary and discouragement if these non-Asians patrons received a red card from neighboring Dim Sum restaurant who are also discouraged and ejected from their big fat long line. Chinese idiom 門可羅雀 mun4 ho2 lo4 zoek3: "you can catch sparrows with a net right at the doorstep," illustrating just how quiet and devoid of foot traffic the business is. Despite the "Grandma" business name, this business is somewhat newly open cafe containing modern upgraded technology of remote controlled ceiling HVAC vents, and digitalized paperless menu ordering. Condiments issued at the table were aged dark vinegar, and Matcha green tea was complimentary served. My party only use aged dark vinegar as a condiment for dumplings. We have a strong predilection for mellow, malty sweetness of dark vinegar rather than the high salt content in soy sauce. Bill payment is printed which I did obtain a sales receipt. There is no printed takeout menu and no business card for grabs. The food for Chinese cuisine type is what my party refers non-Cantonese, Guangdong province 外省人 ngoi6 saang2 jan4 (noun) outside province; foreign person. Despite this business is northern Chinese cuisine, Cantonese vernacular language is noticeably spoken by staff. Customer service is accommodating. Grandma did served our party. I sorrowfully miss my grandmother, 嫲嫲 maa4 maa4. We requested to change tables due to the artic cold blast from the HVAC emanating from direct above our head from the ceiling and our male server turn off the air conditioner. I requested to keep the sales receipt which the female associates at the cash wrap re-printed a duplicate. At the bottom of the sales receipt there is a suggested gratuity intervals of 18%, 22% and 25% where customers do not have to perform math calculation. There are several large beautiful Japanese beckoning cats, (maneki-neko) which are adjacent to the cash register counter. Chinese bamboo is wrapped behind this Japanese beckoning cat. Restroom facilities are clean and modern. Dim sum bamboo baskets are hanging on the wall as decoration. Bakchoi (Chinese cabbage) pork dumplings, 12 pieces, $13.99 The dumpling skin was somewhat thin, but I wished for thinner. The dumplings were small size. I can surely consume dumplings all day. Beef noodles soup $16.99 La mian wheat based noodles were embedded and abundant. The quantity of beef slices were also abundant. The soup broth was not heavy in high level of cholesterol and fat content. I did not see any bubbles in the soup broth. This entrée ate my fill and sustained my hunger pangs for the whole afternoon. I have very high standards for authentic dumplings: their wrappers must be thin, their fillings must be generous, they must be piping hot when served, they must be accompanied by aged dark vinegar, and they must be digested by drinking the original broth in which they were cooked ... Only northern Chinese natives know how to meet all of these standards. I was not convinced by the two young waiting staff with southern accents who greeted me at the door, but I stayed because the two older women behind the transparent partition, who were making the dumplings, assured me that they were both from the north, and knew how to make authentic dumplings. One of these older women was the owner, the "Grandma", who opened this restaurant about a year and a half ago. She paid particular attention to me, explaining how fresh her ingredients were, how everything was handmade from scratch, and how she offered authentic condiments, including a small saucer of dark vinegar from the kitchen. She even brought me a cup of the broth in which my vegetarian dumplings were boiled (good sign that she knew not to boil vegetarian dumplings in the same water for the meat ones). As far as the dumplings went - although the wrappers could have been thinner, the filling itself was delicious. This was their only boiled vegetarian option, with eggs, vermicelli noodles, carrots, "wood-ear" mushrooms and nice seasonings. There is another steamed vegetarian option with eggs and zucchini, which I will try next time. Each order of dumplings includes 12 pieces, which is not enough to fill my stomach, so I asked for a plate of shredded potato salad. This turned out to be somewhat disappointing: for the price they charge, the portion was quite small, and it was too salty for me. The young waitress offered me a cup of barley tea in the end, "to dispel grease" - I guess their meat versions could be quite rich :-) All in all it was a very nice experience, and I do plan to bring my family there when we have a chance to be near this location. read more

REALLY delicious steamed pork and chive dumplings! Perfect ratio of dough to meat, and you could tell they were super fresh (and hot). The pork mix was juicy, and well-seasoned. Would definitely return here again for the steamed dumplings (the fried ones tasted a bit dry to me). read more

This spot has recently opened and I have been meaning to try it. In the middle of Chinatown, there is no shortage of flavorful dumplings as there is lots of competition. The dining area looks brightly lit and feels right, as our server brought us hot tea mugs. On a cold winter day, it was a nice welcome gesture. We ordered on a tablet, and the servers are happy to answer your questions. We had platters of dumplings that we shared. Soy sauce, vinegar and hot sauce were provided at the table. All of our food was fresh, and as a steamer full of dumplings were placed in front of us, they were piping hot. We had pork and chive dumplings, followed by a plate of beef and onion dumplings. They took the person after me, who received and ate her food; I then ordered food at the register like a normal person, and sat down in the chair to wait. Visited 2/21/26. Cannot say enough good things about Grandma's. It was very busy in Chinatown around lunchtime but they still bent over backwards to get four of us in for a walk in. Service was solid and ordering was easy using the machines. It was then confirmed by the staff. The big stand outs of the meal were the cucumbers in chili oil starter and the pork dumplings (so juicy and delicate), but you couldn't really go wrong with anything you order. I then decided to do take out and the waitress shooed me to go outside so that I can order at the kiosk. I've ordered before at this restaurant, I could order inside... Staff are very nice. Its right next to Joe's Shanghai #1 tourist trap in Chinatown. I imagine this spot is trying to catch that spillover visitors when lines and wait times are way too long over there. Everything was ok, but prices were high on all items. Selection was not great as if you went into one of the authentic spots all around. $12 for 8 dumplings. Go down the block and get 16 dumplings to go for $5 at Tasty Dumpling or Fried Dumpling next to Columbus Park. They have an open kitchen so you can see them making everything which is cool for a photo or 2. If you are visiting and checking a Chinatown box go for it. If you are looking for authentic old school chinese restaurant food and feel, tell Grandma raincheck. read more

The pickled bokchoi dumplings were the star of the evening, although the 12pcs were a close second. The bbq pork fried rice was fine but a bit boring, especially compared to the highly flavored tasty dumplings. The only small problem we had was that the waitstaff must have come by TEN TIMES wanting us to pay the check. We're not of a 'dine and dash' age, all we wanted to do was enjoy a leisurely dinner with friends - and without constant interruptions.
