Best vegan donuts on the east coast.

I've been going here more often recently to get my donut fix. Just love how light and fluffy the donuts are and they have a good selection to choose from. Coffee drinks are good as well. The only reason I'm writing this review is because the person working there today totally made my day better! So thanks again, whoever you are (since I didn't get your name). I'm giving 4 stars for the look and cleanliness of the place. I like the whole Pennsylvania auction look. Employees July 1 morning were weird. Donut was very good almost like old fashioned new york donuts not quite. Very unique flavors like peanut butter and jelly donut. They also have ice cream,coffee and a few other items. If you go here, the food really is exceptional. The customer service however, not so much. I would equate the cashier's attitude with that of the angry lady at the DMV. Management seriously needs to switch up some of the staff, they need a serious attitude adjustment. read more

While the donuts here are admittedly quite good- this a review based upon their awful customer service. I've heard from many different people that the people behind the counter are very rude- and this has definitely been my experience when I've been. About a year ago, I decided to have Dunwell provide the dessert for my wedding in Brooklyn and it ended up being the most stressful part of wedding planning. Everything about dealing with the two owners was simply awful. It literally took MONTHS to get a phone call or email back and one of them is a total ass over the phone. I got so fed up that I tried to find other options, but by that time, it was too late and I was forced to stick with Dunwell. Two days before my wedding, I still hadn't received a confirmation even after i had paid these guys several hundred dollars (I idiotically thought they would become more helpful and responsive after I paid them). While everything ended up working out at the last minute...I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone looking to hire them for a special event. While I do like their product (and my guests did too), their lack of professionalism and attitude wasn't worth it. read more

Very disappointing. Chocolat sprinkle donut was too sugary, didn't taste like chocolate at all. Peanutbutter jelly also not impressed. Sorry but I've had way more fluffy donuts then this. read more

Ive come here so many times. Doughnuts are always fresh and the service is always pleasant. I recommend the glazed doughnut, i guess i like simple things but it truly tastes WOW. Their iced coffee is also freaking amazing! Every time i go i have to get an iced coffee! read more

their doughnuts are amazing. period. folks who are saying they are 'weird' are also expressing some weird hang ups about veganism in general. these babies taste exactly like nonvegan doughnuts, so let the haters hate and let us eat fantastic doughnuts. the flavor combinations thought up here will not be found elsewhere! where else will you find an early grey doughnut? nowhere. because their doughnuts are so bomb, they can sell out closer toward the end of the day, just fyi. read more

Its just ok, i'm sure its the best VEGAN donut around, but as a regular donut, there are plenty of other great donuts like dough or doughnut plant or underwest (cakey variety). read more

We came near its closing time which meant two things, there were only a few options and also I kept trying to picture them how even more great they would taste if they were fresh! right out of the oven. But other than that, YUM YUM YUM YUM. I never realized how much I like donuts till I see them or have had my first bite of it. But Im glad I dont really crave for donuts like that for I will just have multiple visits to the doctor in the near future. I chose coconut crumbs donuts from my friends $14 box of donuts (6). It was made with perfection, the moisture and everything about this pastry! I was contemplating whether to get coffee but since it was self serve and I dont know how to make my own coffee for I make it too bitter or too milky, I just left my donut lonely. We did peep the different things to put on your coffee: rice milk, almond milk, soy milk. Thought that was way too cute. I want to go back! I need to go back! I shall be back! Must have more. I can't believe I hadn't reviewed this place yet! This is my neighborhood doughnut shop and I'm a regular. The doughnuts are amazing (cruelty-free!) and the coffee is good. Every guest I've ever brought here has been blown away by both the doughnuts' taste and how light they are, i.e. you don't feel gross after eating them. So lucky to have them nearby. read more

Amazingly delicious, super yummy flavors and good sized donuts... BUT a bit too pricey in my opinion. My biggest complaint tho are the workers. I was craving something sweet after my hard to beat lunch. This donut beat it. The whole vibe of dun-well is vintage and I love it. I was torn between the cinnamon sugar and the chocolate frosted, but in the end decided on the cinnamon sugar. I'm SO glad I did. If I didn't know everything here was vegan I would have thought I bought a regular donut. So doughy and delicious. There was no line but all the tables were filled up, so we took it to go. These guys really know how to make a doughnut - and I've tried nearly all of the notable doughnut names in NYC! The cake and yeast doughnuts are both perfectly textured, never overly sweet, and generally full of flavor. You would never guess anything was "missing" or that they were vegan. I was so impressed with my first Dun-Wells that I had to go back for more again and again, often picking up dozen boxes for my office. Their exotic flavors are usually the best. Unfortunately they no longer ever seem to have them. This place is way out of my way so I have to beg my boyfriend to drive me there (from Park Slope) and the last three times the whole trip was in vain as they had only the weakest flavors available. I hope someday they consider a Crumbs Cupcakes-Like business model and keep more of the fun flavors in stock more often. The new staff - perhaps the same girl others have had to deal with lately - is probably tired of having to turn hopefuls away, and it shows because she's lost all semblance pleasantness. I feel for her though. I'm also about fed up with the no credit cards thing. I'm an online business owner myself and do 100% of my sales in credit cards. It's a short-sighted thing of a business owner to do; it's proven that accepting credit/debit cards increases sales, offsetting the cost of processing fees. I have had my fair share of vegan doughnuts. In fact, I seek them out when I travel; I've had vegan doughnuts in SF, LA, Portland Oregon, Portland Maine, Seattle...and NY. These are BY FAR the best I've had. While many vegan doughnuts are the cake style, these guys have perfected the classic (almost what I think I remember krispy kreme being like) style. mmmm amazing. also great decor. read more

WORLD'S BEST DOUGHNUTS!!! Their doughnuts are extremely addictive. I'm very glad I don't live near them because I would eat their doughnuts everyday. The flavors are pure and intense, the texture is light but chewy with NO aftertaste. The flavors we tried were margarita, almond joy, jelly and peanut butter and jelly. All were off the chart delicious. These are the best doughnuts I've ever had and I'm NOT vegan. I look forward to future outings to Brooklyn to try the myriad other flavors they offer. Ordered a dozen donuts to try out at a party. My favorite was the peanut butter and jelly. I couldnt tell it was vegan. It was just an added bonus. The donuts were more yeast based than cake based. I don't know if they make cake based donuts but the variety I got were all yeast. It was good and I would recommend it. Extra .50 cent for donuts with filling FYI. read more

Fantastic doughnuts! I just went there for the first time, took the subway all the way from the upper east side just for a doughnut, but it was SOOOO worth it. I had the coconut chocolate banana mint one and it was amazing, I pretty much inhaled it! read more

I normally don't post negativity, but I need to say something about the atrocious way I was treated earlier today by Dun-well's staff member (blonde guy, his name may or may not be Chris). Before I placed my order, he was cleaning all of the dirty table tops with a soiled rag. When I placed my order, he didn't wash his hands before he began to reach for my doughnut - so I politely asked him to wash his hands first. He got an attitude about it and made the excuse that his hand wasn't going to touch the doughnut. It didn't matter if he was going to use a tissue to handle the doughnut - if you're serving people food, by law you're supposed to wash your hands if you've soiled them in between tasks. I had to politely ask him a second time before he would do it. THEN he wiped his hands dry on his jeans! In order to open up the doughnut's bag, he dug his hand around in it - gross. If I hadn't asked him to wash - he would have done the same thing with his dirtier hand. Afterwards, he threw my change at me which caused it to bounce all over the counter. I look at him and say, "Seriously?" He didn't try to help me gather it up. Then he said sarcastically, "That was an accident..." I tell him that I feel like he's taking my asking him to wash his hands personally and he says "Yeah. I am." Wow. Really? It shocked me that he would get so angry about washing his hands. I was completely polite, almost to the point of being apologetic. There was no justification for his response. Plus, I shouldn't have had to ask him to wash his hands in the first place. I am so disappointed in my experience at Dun-Well's establishment. I was really looking forward to trying their doughnuts because as a vegan, I haven't had one in years. I only found out about them a few days ago and made the effort to patronize as soon as I had free time. The doughnut was good, but their staff member's rudeness, as well as his lack of customer service, care, and cleanliness made the trip not worth it. read more

Donuts are really good. Wouldn't even know they were vegan if it wasn't mentioned. I try to go every Saturday as a small treat for myself. My mom and stepdad go there Saturdays when they first open to sit down since is less busy around that time. They're vegans so it's great that this place exist. read more

This place is right 2 blocks away from my parents home where i grew up. I was happy to see a place like this open up in that neighborhood and was looking forward to trying it. I went there one afternoon and tried the lavender-lemon doughnut and the strawberry doughnut. I an say i liked them,but wasn't crazy about them. I love love love sweets and i thought the glaze on the strawberry was way too sweet and the lavender-lemon was a little overpowering with an almost perfumy lavender taste. With that said i would give them another try due to the fact that the guy behind the counter was very personable. Next time i will try their coffee and a different flavor and will make sure to post a pic! read more

Stopped here after eating breakfast, so I only bought one donut to share with my husband--pb and chocolate with glaze. It was so good with hot coffee. I wish our trip would have allowed a return trip, but for vegans who miss donuts, this is the place to visit. read more

Best doughnut in New York City. Easy.

These doughnuts were very similar to Dough doughnuts because there were very light. To some extent they had the texture of a chinese fried dough stick... I still think it's a bit overpriced for what you get... $2.50/doughnut (but, I'm a believer in dollar doughnuts). These doughnuts keep well overnight. The lemon cardamom was unique. Being that I live in Staten Island, one would understand my frustration with this establishment being, "sold out of doughnuts" at 4pm on a Tuesday giving me no choice but to drive to Dough instead since they make doughnuts all day long. This used to be one of my favorite places that my sister and I would visit whenever we could (even though it is a 45 minute drive from our home.) I have nothing negative to say about them (the doughnuts and coffee are delicious) aside from the fact that they can't figure out a way to have doughnuts available ALL DAY. This is a business that has been on TV and won multiple awards. How do you not provide for all of your customers? It's extremely frustrating and I'm not sure that I will make the 45 minute drive to them ever again. It's a waste of gas and the toll. read more
