Buffets at this price point usually have a bad rep, but I'm here to tell you that if you have any doubts about visiting this E Star location remove them right now. First of all, the contemporary decor and the dim, somewhat romantic lighting in this establishment makes you forget that you are at a Chinese buffet. We arrived this past Sunday after church and after being seated to our section I immediately went to the bathroom to freshen up. All the fear that I had of what I would find on the opposite end of the door quickly melted after discovering how clean it was. Keep in mind, this was on a busy Sunday afternoon. I'm one of the ones that believes that if the bathroom isn't well kept, then the kitchen isn't too far behind. The thing about the food here is that it's actually flavorful! Some of my favorites were the wings, shrimp, fried crabs, crawfish (please keep in mind that it's not crawfish season, so it's not to be judged harshly), and the sushi. So many varieties of tasty sushi! The food was fresh, it was always replaced quickly, and they keep the buffet area clean! Jennifer, our waitress was pleasant and very attentive to our drinks. I wish the rangoons weren't filled with chives and I wish there was more of a variety of desserts. There's mostly fruit, which I didn't get a chance to try (mainly because at a buffet I'm never concerned about my daily fruit and vegetable intake) but some family members commented on how sweet it was. There was a variety of pudding (which I've never been a fan of), and a sheet cake with coconut icing (nothing to rave about), and of course the standard ice cream machine with cones (my little cousin ate 3). Since you can't get everything you wish for I still won't take away any stars. Everyone was still full several hours after (uncanny with Chinese food!) and no one got food poisoning. What more could you ask for at this price point? ($12 dollars for the buffet and $2 with a drink - I'm picky about fountain drinks because they never taste like the real thing, but my Dr. Pepper actually tasted like Dr. Pepper) There's something for everyone so you can't go wrong satisfying a big group. Mother's day, sometimes I spend it just with my mom, like last year when I took her to Ruth's Chris steakhouse. Well this year we did the other option in our family. We have a huge family dinner with my uncle and my cousins. So imagine a bunch of kids and grownups of all vary ages trying to agree on food. Yeah...that's why we decided on a chinese buffet instead. Since I was going to be picking up the bill this holiday, I was glad it was a more budget friendly place. It was about 10 bucks a person so that was already a plus in my book. This place get very crowded so we came at a good time. 4 pm right after the lunch rush and before the dinner crowd. The buffet is huge. I started out with the sushi/rolls section. I didn't drool over any of their rolls, but I must say their sushi was super fresh, since it's only out on the buffet for a few minutes before it's all gone. Most chinese buffets also offer crawfish on their line, but usually it's small, dead, bad flavored mudbugs. This place actually has them fresh and with a decent flavor and size to them. Other good items on the line are the calamari and the korean bbq. I totally got my money's worth. The other chinese food was actually pretty mediocre, skip all that other stuff. If I could rate a place 0 stars this would be it, I'm not the type of person to write a review but paying $75 dollars for 4 buffets and drinks I felt like I got robbed. I came in not expecting it to be that great and for it to be mediocre but when I took a bite out of the food I instantly regretted coming here. All of the food was cold and not properly cooked. After trying to eat I decided to try some fruit and in my head I was like there is no way they could mess up fruit but I was bamboozled. If they could choose the worst fruit in the store I am sure they did. I'm not sure what they did with the melon but I felt like I could taste nail polish in it. Nice selection but could offer better service! When my Wife and I are feeling in the mood for some Chinese buffet we always hit this spot. What we like about this place is that they offer a huge selection of food and the price is decent. There are several Chinese buffets along i-10 but this one seems to be the one we come back to. They are the only buffet that I'm aware of out here that offer fresh oysters, along with sushi, and other delights. If you want to be superduper full and satisfied come to this place. I never judge a place on a once visit.... Tried them before and walked when the food and service was so bad. That evening all 3 of us had upset stomach. But I always give a place a second chance. Kinda wish I hadn't! Service still not so good, Still had to hunt waiters to just fill our drinks or any other needs! Food seemed a little better (just a little, not worth the money) Was seemly enjoying our dinner till I saw the chicken still had feathers. I was so grossed out couldn't eat anything else. I hunted a waiter to inform him and all I got while he took the plate around was "ok" really no apology no nothing but just ok. Not even a manager came to table to apologize or anything. They just didn't care. Food was just warm not really hot as food on a buffet should be. Most buffet tables are so hot they have steam rolling out and hot to the touch. Although food looked good and a good variety. it just lack the taste expected from a restaurant. Also had just a strange taste even some (chicken) tasted a little freezer burn like it was not packaged safely while frozen. Although were did not get sick as before but did have a bit of upset stomachs. Left not happy. Will not be back and will not recommend to any of my friends let alone frinamies. This place has gone downhill!! We got here two hours before closing. Sushi rice was super hard, from being left out. The crab was super dry and incredibly salty, despite being a "fresh" batch. The rolls were rock hard, not exaggerating. Pretty much most of our food was extremely gross and we used to really enjoy coming here and getting the crab. Do not recommend. The service is really good and the people are super attentive, but the food is so super bad. Not worth it!!! Find another place to eat. read more

I have eaten at Chinese buffets across the East coast and the Midwest. The E Star is definitely up towards the top of that list. If you are in search for a respectable Chinese Buffet near Katy, TX, then look no further. Great food and A+ service. I do not think my drink got half empty before the server filled it, and he brought extra napkins which seems to be a necessity when you are diving headfirst deep into chopsticks, sushi, lo mien, and General Tso's chicken. I came here for lunch with a couple of co workers. One of which like buffets. They have the standard buffet fare and it was fresh the day I went. You can really get full here! Unlike my co workers I only had one full plate lol. It is a combination of Chinese food and american food and I thought it was reasonably priced. Besides the buffet food they offer soup and desserts. Such a great DISAPPOINTMENT! Should have known when I walked in. It stunk. Walked through the buffet area. Pork only. No variety. Where's the orange chicken, chicken egg rolls, fresh noodles and vegetable rolls? Panda Express would have been a superbly better experience. At least the food would have been fresh, "healthy," and hot food experience. The fried calamari was stale. The fried whatever-it-was (thought it was shrimp) was uncooked. Spit my food twice at least. First of all, I never go to Chinese buffets. I've had bad experiences in every one of them and never felt the need to go again. My mom selected the restaurant since she said it was good the last time she went. I went on Yelp and was surprised to see a bunch of 4 starts, so we checked it out. It was Mother's day, and foolish us didnt think it would be packed. Wrong. It took us at least 30min to get a table. The food selection was pretty good, I'll give it that. The food itself... meh. I was actually surprised the sashimi wasn't smelly. Clams were overcooked. Mussels were okay. Wonton soup was gross. Hot & Sour wasnt bad. The seafood bisque was blah. The standard Chinese entrees were ok. I believe it was $11/person that evening. Meh. Def not worth the 30 min wait. And man, this Yankee can eat some buffet. Typical over-the-top neon interiors, glittering lights and lots of open seating make this look like the same Chinese buffet you've seen elsewhere. The food is comparatively good, actually. A decent selection of basic sushi, tons of fried goodies, vegetable dishes galore, Asian-inspired cuisine. All at affordable prices. The service was excellent. My water glass never went completely empty. For the price, the place is a pretty good value. Their food is pretty good and their selection is just broad enough, though not like a Vegas buffet or anything. On good thing though is that the food is never lacking as the servers promptly refill the food on display. This place is definitely a cut above the standard Chinese buffet place. Lots of seafood, and surprisingly the oysters and the crawfish are tasty, which seldom the case at buffets. Everything is very clean and the servers are friendly. I have been eating here for years and years and today a waitress comes to my table in the middle of our meal to inform us the items on our plate are an additional charge because the dinner menu has changed. Not only are there no signs posted about this new charge, no one said anything while being seated. The manager was no where to be found to discuss this $4 dollar up charge per item on the plate. Today my dad and I went here. I used to love E Star (a different location, though) when I was younger and wanted to test out the Katy location despite the negative reviews. I planned on writing an honest review so we got there right after the restaurant opened so the food would be fresh. The second I opened the restaurant door we were hit with a thick, nauseating odor. The smell seemed to be emanating from the walls and restaurant was warm which made the smell worse. I can't even place what the smell was- like something was rotting. The only place where the smell was slightly avoidable was the actual buffet. My father and I heavily considered leaving but decided to roll the dice as the buffet looked palatable. I did ask the server to move us closer to the front as we were placed in the back where the smell was overwhelming. For the most part the food was okay if you stuck to it the standard Chinese buffet staples like lo mein. I only dared to try the sushi that was cooked and something tasted off. My dad noted that the crab puffs also had a weird fishy taste. After my first plate I stuck to the regular buffet fare and avoided any meat. Our waitress was attentive and the restaurant looked clean but there is a serious problem that should probably be investigated by the Health Department. My dad and I agreed that if we don't get food poisoning then this adventure will have been a success. I had to wash my mouth and take anti nausea medications when we got home. There's a lot of waiters so if you need anything you basically just get anyone attention. Since there's always so many people the food is always coming in and out , so it's always fresh. Upon arriving, they looked really packed. There was literally no space for parking, but still had some space for parking. Anyways, they are really clean compared to other buffets in Houston and sugar land. They are quick too change the food trays at the buffet when food is empty or not empty. The food has always been fresh, and it's a plus for me. I only go too these places for the boiled shrimp and sushi. I love shrimp. That's all. The minute I sat down the server was trying closing me out even told me if i was going to continue to eat and put my bill on the table. Have been coming here for years because I love their crab but will no longer be going here after one employee REFUSED to put the fresh crab out. He brought out the tray with the fresh crab and I waited for him to fill the plate up but instead he walked away from me standing there.
