The atmosphere was so much fun! Especially being a daughter of a retired Firefighter, it was so cool to look around and see all of the antique and collectible for fighting tools and equipment around the place! We arrived later in the evening and were welcomed in by the super- friendly staff and we opted to sit in the bar area. After looking at the listed tap menu, we were told that the peach & apricot brew was sour, but we both like those featured flavors, so thought we'd give it a try! Bonus that its made in-house! I remembered later that we should have just asked to try it first, as it really was sour as we were told! But there was no hint of peach or apricot that we could detect. To us it tasted like sour heartburn. We each finished only half of our glass, and then I opted to order the amber ale that they brew, as it's one of the two darkest beers that they have on tap. The other being a Brown ale. I went back and forth on what to order - I thought I wanted the Fish&Chips at first, but then decided I didn't want such a deep fried meal sitting in my tummy. I ultimately ordered the soup & salad combo. My options were the Firefighter chili (I know how hot that can get, and I'm a total wimp with heat in food) or the option I chose of French Onion soup. My husband ordered a burger. Guess I should have, too! He said his burger was really good! It was messy enough that I thought it couldn't be anything but good! My dinner, however - I ordered ranch on my salad. The ranch was flavorless. At least I like veggies - and I could add salt & pepper for taste. My French onion..... well, I'm not sure if the way they make it is an E9 Firehouse tradition? Maybe it's the way some Firefighter thought it was supposed to be made back in the day? If it's not a fairing, then the chef simply didn't know how to make French Onion soup. The croutons were placed on the rim of the bowl (vs in the broth as normal) and then sprinkled with cheese, and then a big handful of cheese dropped directly into the soup before placing it under the broiler the melt, resulting in a big blob of a rubber like ball of cheese in the middle. I tried putting the croutons into the bowl and cutting up the cheese, but it was just a big mess. On top of that, the broth tasted burnt. I couldn't eat it. I should have just taken all of that cheese out before trying to eat it. Our server was so kind in removing one of the peach-apricot sour heartburns off of our tab. On one hand, it's on me that I didn't complain about the soup - but also, as a former server, I would've thought that she would have seen that I barely touched it and maybe asked about it, at least. I felt like I had already complained of one thing we ordered and had that removed. I didn't want to feel like I was being suspected of fishing for a free meal. For this reason, I may go back and give it one more try sometime, but I'll do that when I feel like eating a burger! read more

Ew ew ew ew! We ordered their food off of uber eats (i am factoring in how long it took the food to get to us) and it was incredibly disappointing. The pasta (the famous fire pasta) was a nauseatingly greasy pile of flavorless crap. Ontop of the the portion size was waay too small for fifteen ( 1 5 ! ) dollars. My partner and I (plus his two girls) met my mom here as the halfway point between us for a lunch visit that could accommodate our diets (I'm GF, my partner is GF and vegan). The staff were friendly and put us in the back covered area where the shuffleboard table was, which was great because we could let the kids get up from the table a bit without disturbing other guests much. The waitress was very friendly and patient and didn't mind our ordering for the kids first to get them fed while we found food choices that worked for us. The meals were okay - they didn't have as many gf/vegan options as I'd hoped, but that happens. My gf tuna melt was pretty good; my mom's salad looked a bit anemic but she said it was fine. My partner ordered the beyond burger on a gf bun and the waitress specifically marked it as vegan, but it came out with cheese on it. I asked to have it remade (my partner doesn't like to "be a bother," but I know how much dairy genuinely upsets his stomach), and when it came out again, clearly rushed, it had regular mayonnaise on it. At that point my partner just decided to eat it because the rest of us were basically done. The waitress spoke to the manager and we were comped that meal, which was thoughtful of them. There was also a mix-up with the beer - we thought there was a bar error but it turned out the beers just look...and taste...exactly the same? Anyway, we ended up buying an extra beer because it wasn't clear. The floors of the main room were strangely slippery and I had a hard time walking on it without falling. Still not sure why. Anyway, those things are neither here nor there; none of them is terrible but altogether it seems like maybe they're still...well, finding their footing, as it were. We will probably visit some other options in the area and try this place again in a few months to let them get their rhythm established, as they said something about new management or owners. Their menu has changed and it wasn't for the better. I came in with some friends and the service was okay for a busy Friday night, and so was the food. My sandwich came out room temperature and so were my fries. I miss all the delicious apps from the previous menu. I'll give them a try again soon. read more

Went for brunch. Great breakfast. I had the pumper. Eggs meat potatoes and do I mention the homemade English muffin. Wow My wife had the veggie omelette. Ate it all! The potatoes are unique. Country style with peppers -similar to O'Brien. Then they added cheese. Great place. read more

This place was laid back from the getgo. Really liked the atmosphere, especially COVid times because you get to see humans work together for humans with the masking and social distancing. Simply excellent. TL;DR Just go already. It'll be good. I swear. ---------------------------------------------------- Went to E9 a little hesitant, but I will not be hesitant again, and neither should you. The staff was super friendly, and was very responsive. They seemed to genuinely enjoy working there. The restaurant is based out of the old fire station, and they have all sorts of cool firefighting relics. (Ladders, alarms, mats, etc) They also have stalls for the 4 horses that pulled the engine, and have a few drinks named after aforementioned horses, which the staff mentioned were buried on the premises. The food was phenomenal. I ordered a cheese pizza, the chicken tenders w/ fries, and a maple bourbon ice cream for desert. I'll start with the pizza. Nice and crispy on the edges, but not burned. The sauce gave it flavor without completely controlling it. The pizza was sweet, and crunchy. The only downside with this was that the center pieces are hard to eat, and don't fold well, but that can be expected of a square cut pizza, which they do excellently. The chicken rivals major brands like Popeyes & Chick-fil-A. Perfectly seasoned & breaded in store. The fries were salted, but not too much so. The fries had a slight spiced taste I couldn't quite place, but they are just as good as any other fry you can get from traditional fast food places. The ice cream is a league of its own. Enough said. Get yourself in here and try this, I cannot believe I ignored this place for 15 years. The restaurant has easily accessible parking, and is hard to miss, being a big brick building right on 6th. 10/10 will 100% be bringing my friends here next time we're looking for a nice place to eat in the central district. Wow, this is good food. Fresh in house made meatloaf topped with a fresh made cheesy sauce next to fresh made mashed potatoes with a garlicky cheese sauce and a bacon corn side dish. The meal comes with a side salad, I ordered the homemade ranch. Outstanding!! My daughter ordered a bacon cheeseburger with batter fried French fries. Kid-friendly! My 2-yr old was starving, so they took my order for him even before our drinks and got his food ready ASAP! There is a very nice changing table in the bathroom too. The staff were so friendly too to both my kids, who can be very loud at times. Booster seat or high chairs available, kids menu and crayons without us even asking. My husband ate his fill and he is on the Keto diet! They accommodated very well to his needs. The parking lot makes it easy to get the kids in and out. We had a great time. read more

I was so sad when E9 closed last year for COVID reasons. After nearly a year, I was stoked to come back. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed in basically everything besides the service. The staff was really nice and tentative, so that's why I gave it 3 stars. Otherwise I would've given a 1 star. I ordered the fire pasta 2.0, and it was terrible. The previous fire pasta was so good, everyone I knew would go there for that dish in particular. If it's not broken, why fix it? I don't get it. The others at my table got the other "popular dishes" and were also very underwhelmed. They changed the whole menu, and unfortunately for the worse. I will not be coming back. I went here for the first time last night for drinks and apps with friends. I would give it 5 stars for the atmosphere but unfortunately the food fell a little short. I ordered a bloody mary which was good, nothing out of the ordinary, nothing special. It came skewered with two olives and a little pickled pepper. I was excited to order the patty melt which came on rye but when I asked the waitperson if the bread had caraway seeds she gave me a quizzical look and then said, no there's no seeds. Since I'm allergic to them I had to ask her if she knew what caraway seeds were. She said no but she would check with the kitchen and low and behold, the bread did have caraway seeds, so at least it was an educational experience for her. That said, she was extremely nice but it was a half an hour before we received our food. I ended up ordering the quesadillas with chicken. Again, nothing special. In fact the quesadillas were so flat I wondered if there was any chicken there at all. A friend of mine had the wagyu burger and he said that was good. Another had the nachos is said the refried beans had the funky flavor. After looking at the breakfast menu I think I would come back to try the eggs benedict. Not being a beer drinker because that's what they specialize in, I probably would not be back for dinner unless I was in the area. read more

First visit since revamp and pandemic. Stopped in for lunch on 9/18. We were seated within 5 minutes. Staff was very personable. We had hesitated for months to come in since the seemingly big menu change (Loved the mac & cheese balls and nachos...). I am glad my husband was so persistent! We ordered the queso with homemade potato chips. O. M. G. It was so good! I would still prefer tortilla chips but the dip was yummy! Husband ordered fish & chips. I had the french onion soup & salad combo. Husband really enjoyed his food. My soup was perfect especially as it was slightly cooler weather and the rain was beating down at times. Salad was a nice portion with tasty blue cheese ( tasted homemade). To top it off- hand held pie with mixed berries! What a fun Place to eat. Started out with a deep fried Mac and cheese nuggets which are a must. The blue cheese chicken sandwich is deep fried and has boers head bacon on it. The fries are absolutely phenomenal. Lots of beer selections and the wait staff is extremely friendly and helpful. You can even join the beer club and get your name on the wall. Everything you could want in a brewpub restaurant! Ambience, service, menu choices, brews and a beautiful bar. Extras were Outdoor dining, TV's for sports fans, and good background music so you could converse without yelling. As a low carb eater traveling with people without diet concerns, they had great selections like the bison burger and their Engine 9 cheeseburger perfectly cooked with a little pink for "medium",with grilled onions and lettuce wrap available, oh my goodness! Top it off with a side salad that had all types of greens, baby tomatoes cut in half and sunflower seeds plus Bleu cheese chunky dressing definitely homemade topped it off. Attention to detail plus a great dill spear, yummy. My party especially enjoyed the split pea soup, not over salty and definitely homemade plus the 4 x 4oz flight of beers from their extensive selection. Now they have a second location of the brewing operation serving pizza in downtown so we'll have to check that out next time we're up from Portland. read more

This is a very old firehouse converted into a brewery/restaurant. The building is beautiful. Location kind of sucks, and parking is horrible. I was extremely disappointed in their lack of vegetarian options, or meals that could be made vegetarian. Don't even attempt if you're vegan or have food allergies. Veggie burger isn't even a vegan patty. Our waitress was wonderful. Most of the staff was very friendly and seem happy. My bf ordered the country fried steak thing, and I had the veggie patty on a regular burger w/o the sauce. He thought his was excellent, and enjoyed their take on the gravy. Loved his side (a cream corn type thing) and potatos. We very much doubted the beef claims, based off the cost. Kobe beef of any type is very expensive. But, he did say it was very good either way. My veggie burger was quite cold, and the cheese hadn't melted at all. But our server was wonderful about it, and the replacement was much better. Onion rings were also great. It's also important to note th bathrooms are very narrow. If you are a larger person, it may be difficult. Overall, enjoyed the visit but not likely to return due to location and food options for me. read more

I have seen this place pop up when searching for breweries in Tacoma, but since it was a lower star I decided to wait on it. I was in the area on Saturday grabbing ice cream and decided it would be a perfect opportunity to try it. Unfortunately this place reminds me a lot of most breweries/restaurants. First let me mention that I am 100% reviewing the beer. When we got to the restaurant I had just finished up the blazing wing challenge and we just had a little ice cream. So I didnt want food, just beer. We grabbed a flight, which was cheap. Its a predetermined selection of beer for like $5 and it was 8 different beers. The price is right, unfortunately the beer is only ok. Everything tasted like a pretty generic beer, no real flavor or depth. With one exception. The IPA had a really weird taste... I mean really weird. I dont know if it was the bottom of the barrel or what, but it just didnt do it for me. The beer at this place reminds me of the Ram or Harmons, pretty generic beers with no real depth of flavor. I unfortunately dont imagine I will be coming back here. I hate to leave a review like this, but it just didnt really do it for me and the place is just far enough away that it isnt really worth the drive. I do want to leave one positive note. These guys hover between three and four stars. The only demerit is they still have some kinks to iron out in some of the house beers, but their brewing game is clearly coming up quickly, so maybe they'll remedy the problematic older recipes soon. They're in an old fire station that dates back to the horse-drawn days. There are still visible arches in the brick walls with name plates at the top; this indicates where the horses were stalled. You walk past some cool old windows and a nice patio seating area to get to the front door; you don't necessarily feel right at first that it's a genuine old fire station, but it does have a historic feel and you might notice the former purpose. Inside, there's tons of brick and some nice carpentry. A great restored rustic feeling with the perfect balance of ambiance and showcase for days gone by. There are ledges between some rows of tables, and a collection of old brass nozzles in many sizes line the tops of those. There's a bar, a family-friendly dining room, and an atrium space off to one side. Many different seating areas here for all types of parties. There's darts if you're feeling sporting, and TVs for watching the game. The daytime crowd is truly all comers; people of every age from all over town pile in. I haven't come in on a weekend night in years, but it used to be a flood of college students drinking beer on Friday and Saturday evenings. Probably still is. The menu is HUGE, and the food seems to be pretty good. We had the workingman's fondue, which was great melted white cheese served with salty pretzels and little smokies. Little smokies! Awesome. We didn't try anything else, but there were 30 other items on the menu. The house beer lineup ranges from pretty broken to pretty damn ambitious. The amber and IPA had some flaws, as they have for years. Those recipes should probably be cleaned up. But they're doing a lot of Belgian and barrel-aged stuff these days that can be pretty amazing. Their guest lineup of taps is very generous, with lots of fantastic choices, and they maintain a great cellar of guest bottles. Only a couple dozen guest bottles, but all really good stuff, both import and domestic. The staff here is very charming; they clearly emphasize hiring young and very attractive women, which is probably wise in this neighborhood. We didn't hit them with very many questions, but they happily gave us the info we needed and the service was always on point. Prices were fair, and you really can't beat the ambiance of this place. It's hard to imagine what you'd change about the layout, and the menu was great. Will definitely be back. read more

In Oct 08 OBC Beer Judges walked away from a whole line-up of unfinished pitchers we'd ordered, because Host brews had off-aromas and flavors - that pinched faces and skewed what the otherwise attractive full-bodied Ales might otherwise present. I think no one in a group of 40 poured or orderd a full Pint after tasting their Brews. It was a real downer. ..as we'd pre-ordered Pitchers of their house ales, and made this a planned stop on our annual OBC Bus Tour of NW Breweries. We don't expect parity out of Portland's Beervana, but significant Off-Flavors and aromas are something we beer judges warn others about. Something is just was not right with these Brews. Adjusting temps, procedures and ingredients to new equipment can be responsible for the off-flavors - so do return later to give them another try. Be certain to smell and sip a sample before you order a Pint. and remember that for awhile,..maybe a YEAR, Guest Taps may be safer for this location. To be fair, i will update this when an experienced beer Judge tells me the line-up won't make me queasy anymore. For now - ordering perhaps only the Engine 9 Barleywine..or Guest taps would be my recommendation. read more

3.5 stars. I would go back but this restaurant did not impress me as much as the other restaurants Steven and I hit up in the past week. Steven had a head start on me by about eight months living in Tacoma and visiting Seattle. He already went to Engine House No. 9 which used to be an old fire station. I guess the locals call it E9. Steve was not that impressed with their beers but he said the amber was good. I just cut to the chase and went to that and indeed it was tasty! I got the E9 taco which has all of the stuffing that you come to expect from a taco but wrapped in a tortilla and looked like a large burrito. It tasted ok but was not as inspiring as it sounded. Service was nice and friendly and the ambiance is quite fetching! read more
