Came back after I heard about the change in ownership. The shake up has made a real change here. The taps/bottles available are much more adventurous and interesting (one of the few places where I can get the great Pliny the Elder) than a few years ago. I hear that the brewers have been given a lot more freedom, which is good to hear because I am a fan of their beer knowledge. Bar trivia still captures my ADD-dominated attention, but I did notice that the burger has received an update. I had a gorgonzola/mushroom burger, and it was tasty. I don't know why it took us so long to eat here!! We lived in Tacoma and never tried it, it took a trip back to visit family for us to make it here. Great food!! Love the beer!! My wife and I split a flight of beer, I personally enjoyed the Rowdy Dick Amber. It was amazing. My wife enjoyed their IPA and BPA. For lunch I had the Rueben Empanadas. They were so good! And they came with a side of their beer cheese sauce. Perfect!! My wife had Rueben sliders with tater tots. They were juicy, had good flavor in the meat, served on fresh brioche buns. My daughter had their chicken strips and fries. She enjoyed them, though they weren't homemade. Preprocessed crap (hence only 4 stars). Overall, we'd go back. I just wish this restaurant, and others, would make kid friendly sizes/portions of homemade food like the rest of the menu. read more

This place is pretty sweet. Some friends and I checked this place out around 1030 on a Friday and it was packed! They had a very nice variety of beers on tap including their own brews and a variety of nice microbrews. We ordered a burger w/tots and an appetizer tray and both were amazing. Solid bar food. The decor in the place is pretty cool too. They have high ceilings with various decorations and I've heard that it used to be a fire department, hence the name. They have karaoke here although they didn't have it while I was there. They have a dart board and a game room which has some classic arcade games and a nice shuffleboard table. The only bad thing about this place was that it got pretty dead right around 1AM. Not sure if it was a fluke but other than that this was a solid 4 stars. read more

This is a very old firehouse converted into a brewery/restaurant. The building is beautiful. Location kind of sucks, and parking is horrible. I was extremely disappointed in their lack of vegetarian options, or meals that could be made vegetarian. Don't even attempt if you're vegan or have food allergies. Veggie burger isn't even a vegan patty. Our waitress was wonderful. Most of the staff was very friendly and seem happy. My bf ordered the country fried steak thing, and I had the veggie patty on a regular burger w/o the sauce. He thought his was excellent, and enjoyed their take on the gravy. Loved his side (a cream corn type thing) and potatos. We very much doubted the beef claims, based off the cost. Kobe beef of any type is very expensive. But, he did say it was very good either way. My veggie burger was quite cold, and the cheese hadn't melted at all. But our server was wonderful about it, and the replacement was much better. Onion rings were also great. It's also important to note th bathrooms are very narrow. If you are a larger person, it may be difficult. Overall, enjoyed the visit but not likely to return due to location and food options for me. read more

STRANGER IN THE WILDERNESS This is down the street from Hill Top. Think back to 1994-1996 and the reputation Hill Top had; not a very good one. Of course the neighborhood cleaned up and this area has bars, restaurants, and clubs down the strip. I came to Engine House No. 9 for a friends party. We were dressed up in dresses as if we were going out to a nice cocktail bar in Seattle. Instead we found ourselves in Tacoma at this bar, walked in, and felt like a stranger. Everyone was in sweaters and jeans. Everyone knew each other. Everyone was just different then us. Everyone was normal, but us. Finally we got up and left. The wait-staff was nice. Fast service. The people were so-so. It's like they never seen another life but that Tacoma neighborhood, although we did meet the table next to us and they were good fun, but the rest... stop starring!!! The menu online is different than the current but it wasn't a problem at all! We chose to sit in the bar area and the person serving us was super patient, answered all our questions, recommended drinks for us since we're both not into the taste of alcohol, and ended up making us a drink off the menu! We just asked for a blend of different juices and flavor and she whipped up something good for us! Outside of the customer service, the food was just as good! We ordered nachos and two burgers. I'm usually not a fan of pico de gallo but this stuff was to die for! Great atmosphere. Though, I must confess I am biased to fire house themed establishments. I came by here for the first time with our Pipes & Drums band doing a pub crawl for St Patty's day. The place was packed and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. I was the MC for the crawl, so my only complaint was the acoustics were awful for an MC trying to announce the bands. Considering that you will rarely have to come into E9 and yell loud enough for everyones attention, this should never be a problem for you. I really appreciated the wait staff. I was unable to get a seat, nor was I really looking for one as my job was more to keep the party going. One of the waitresses grabbed me and asked if I needed a drink. If you are in the area and you love good beer Engine House 9 is a must try. It is in the old fire house that served the area and was built in 1907. Great old feel in side and decorated to the nines with old pics and fire memorabilia. Having there own brewery they have a really good selection of beer on tap as well as a good variety of their own brew. I had their Dry Hop IPA on cask, which was really tasty. The one thing that caught my eye is that they had The Abyss from Deschutes on tab. I was driving so there was no way I was going to have a pint of it but I did get a taste, so good! My girlfriend and I were sitting at the bar and need a something to go along with our beers. We were informed that they have happy hour on Saturdays and that some of the apps were half off. We ordered Mac n' Cheese Wedges, lightly battered and fried golden brown. Served with fries and ranch dressing. Really tasty. Check this place out! read more

Came on a Saturday around 5 and it was empty. By 6 there was a wait. This place gets busy, and I can see why. Food 4.5/5: - calamari: very good! The breading was was just right and the inside was soft, not chewy, which some people like - garlic fries and tots: personally I thought the fry to tot ratio was way off, but that's me being picky. Could have used more garlic and the tots could have been just a tad bit crispier, but that's still me being picky. Very good nonetheless - meatloaf sandwich: BOMB. A little on the spicy side but tons of flavor. Super filling. A nice twist on a classic Service 3.5/5: a little slow, but I think it was mostly because they were busy. The waitress seemed kind of stressed, and it showed, especially since we were a table of 8. Also felt a little rushed to take our order. Atmosphere 5/5: how can you beat an old fire station?! BLTA to go first phone ordering was fast an easy. The person who took my order let me know when it would be ready and when I arrived it was a short wait to be taken care of. It's a seat your self restaurant so flagging down a server to check out can take a couple minute but they are always friendly about it. This place was actually a nice bar and pub. A converted Engine house with a bit of history. I am not a beer drinker but they had some choices of hard cider. I tried Anthem and I did not find it very tasty. Excellent tater tots here. Did not like the jalapeno popper pizza too much. It was like a deconstructed jalapeno popper with jalapenos, bacon, and a cream cheese based sauce. The toppings seemed a little on the stingy side. No heat to the pizza either. I think a crust really makes the pizza and the crust just seemed really chewy and bland. Enjoyed breakfast here last week. Their open faced omelette was excellent. They have a good mix of healthy options and substitutions as well. The coffee was a bit bitter and their homemade English Muffin was great--but came pre-buttered even though we asked for it dry. Good service and a great location and atmosphere. The restaurant had about 5 people eating out of the whole restaurant and it took 16 minutes for a waitress to bring menus. This restaurant was the second choice after a bad experience and not being served in a previous restaurant. However I am extremely happy that we ended up at this restaurant as they have a great atmosphere and absolutely delectable food. As I have a large selection of beers and a full bar. We went there to catch up with friends and grab some grub, while doing so the atmosphere was so laid-back and chill and we decided to grab a couple of drinks as well. We had such a large party and the restaurant was already busy they allowed us to pretty much take over the back room which had shuffle board and multiple arcade games in it. Needless to say it was defiantly fun and a great time. The waitress seemed to be pretty busy and didn't let that affect her ability to take our orders and make sure that we got our food in an efficient amount of time. Is really grateful to have such fantastic service. The food was fantastic and such a large selection normally when there's a large selection of items to choose from on the menu and typically means that they're not made well over this restaurant put that theory to shame. Now to their great menu and food...we had the following: Mac and Cheese Wedges Golden brown battered mac and cheese wedges with ranch. The Pumper Truck Pizza Pepperoni, onions, bacon, mushrooms, sausage, black olives. (Jalapenos optional) Both my boyfriend and I were extremely impressed with our food and how yummy it was!! If I could give this place a 0, I would. This "E firehouse 9" is not a real firehouse bar. It used to be one, and the owners are not only not firefighters but they are using the old house to falsly claim customers. Not only did I ask the staff about firefighters; but I knew more than they did. I went there for one drink, left for ann hour, and came back for a beer and the bartender, specifically Ramona refused to serve me on a bias. If I was a man, she would have served me a second drink. No questions asked. She saw that I was talking to someone older than me who wasn't into talking, and used that as an excuse not to serve me. I told her I was going to file a bad review, and she also refused to tell me her name.The trainee under Ramona was called Desiree. And they threatened to call the police on me if I didn't leave, when all I wanted was the bartenders name. read more

This is one of our favorite spots in Tacoma to get a drink. E9 has a fun, upbeat vibe and done great beer options to choose from. There's even a popcorn machine for you to snack on, and a room of arcade games. The food is also pretty good. They have just what your heart will want on a night out. A group fave of ours are the Mac n Cheese bites. But the karaoke... If you happen to be at E9 during the karaoke time, good luck hearing anyone talk even if they're right next to you. They have the speakers turned waaaaayyy up all the time. Even when nobody is singing. But if you like karaoke, or listening to people do karaoke, then check them out on those nights.
