OMG -- we were looking for a place to get something quick and easy . . . and Cafe Ohia was recommended by the owner of the B&B where we're staying . . . all I can say is yum, yum for the tum, tum!!! Their sandwiches are made with homemade bread, fresh vegetables and some pretty tasty deli meats. The 3-seed bread with turkey and provolone is a must-try. Go for the half-sandwich because the full sandwich is pretty hefty. BUT . . . . save room for what has to be some of the best desserts around. My favorite? The chocolate pecan tart -- I'm about to eat my second one of the day!!!!!! Joyce, the brand new owner, is keeping it real with great customer service and delicious food. Cranberry bread pudding, which I have yet to try, to sandwiches ($6.95) to tiramisu. Granted the baked-goods selection varies and consists of maybe 6 things. It is a small place. FANTASTIC idea to stick a massive sandwich in your backpack on your way up to Volcano though they do have a few decent sized tables outside. Today, tuna sandwich on Volcano 3 seed bread with Swiss cheese, Dijon mustard, and all the veggies (lettuce, tomato, sprouts, pickles, cucumbers and onions). Massive and satisfying. A small family owned road side café, it has outdoor seating only. You go in and order your sandwich and it is made to order. We ordered a ham and cheese on mac-cranberry bread which was $8.50. The sandwich is twice the size of a regular sandwich so it's not a bad deal. You can top it according to what you like - sprouts, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, etc. The bread was good - the macadamia/cranberry bread had a nice flavor to it - a bit different from your regular sandwich offerings. The vegetables were good too. The proteins however were a little scarce. There was only a relatively thin layer of ham/cheese in the sandwich and it tasted like regular ham/cheese you would get at a conventional supermarket. It was okay - not great. I highly recommend stopping by Café Ohi'a, which is tucked away off Old Volcano Road, behind Kiawe Kitchen. The women who work here were all very nice and it sounds like they try to get as many of their ingredients as possible locally. Our first experience with Café Ohi'a was on our first day in the park. Stewart and I split a sandwich, which was a good call because it was one big sandwich. Cranberry Macadamia Nut bread, ham, turkey, just a bit of mayo, and all of the veggies. It was delicious. Since the sandwich was so good, we went back to Café Ohi'a the following morning for breakfast. Stewart and I split a homemade cinnamon roll, which was awesome. Less sweet than most cinnamon rolls, you could eat a lot of cinnamon roll before being overwhelmed by the sugar. My mom got the croissant breakfast sandwich, which was also very tasty. read more

We called in lunch to go so we could eat it in the nearby Hawaii Volcanoes National Park today. I got the shoyu chicken plate with rice and macaroni salad. My husband got the huge turkey sandwich on oatmeal white with provolone cheese and a side order of Doritos. I told them we get a 10% discount as members of the Volcano Community Association and they said OK. The order was ready when we got there in about 15-20 minutes. The food was great, chicken was nice and tender, 2 thighs in a wonderful sweet/salty shoyu sauce. I was so full I took half of it home to finish later. My husband got full also but kept eating the sandwich because it was so fresh and delicious. We saved the chips for later. They have 2 special plate lunches every day. The shoyu chicken comes with a choice of salads; macaroni, potato or 3-bean. I wish there was another choice like a coleslaw or green salad. Price was about $23 for the 2 of us. If you're on your way to or from the Volcanoes National Park, this is a great pit stop. They serve breakfast all day, and I chose the fried rice breakfast bowl with Portuguese sausage. I didn't expect a ton, and I was impressed by how fluffy the egg topper was and by the overall taste. That said, don't knock a shop by its cover. Breakfast bowl is normal paper soup bowl filled with rice - brown or white - two types of meat - Portuguese sausage ham or bacon - and a pancake size of scrambled eggs. All for about $6 My wife had the breakfast croissant. It all good. Normally I am not picky about seasoning but it seems everywhere very little is done. I added salt , peeper and a little hot sauce and then had a much better meal. They provide lots of the above in small paper packets or bottles. Hard to fault a place for things you can easily adjust to taste. I would give a 3.5 but since other rated it higher I went lower. I would go again. read more

Eagles Lighthouse Cafe is a small cafe near Volcano National park. The seating area is outside, which was great for us when we went on a sunny and beautiful day. I got a breakfast bagel sandwich - bacon, egg cheeeeeeeeeeese. It was so good I got another. My girlfriend got a Portuguese been soup, it was pretty good, but not nearly as satisfying as the breakfast sandwich we shared. The coffee here is from a machine, there's a general store maybe 5 minutes away that's supposed to have good espresso. I got confused and tried to get espresso from the general store that shares a building with Eagles... they have a drip coffee maker - it was just okay. I got a sandwich to go and went out hiking around Volcano National Park. When I ate it, I was exhausted, but I swear it was one of the best and most satisfying sandwiches I've ever had. I think Eagles is definitely worth swinging by if you're around Volcano. read more

Get the Heartwarming Chili in the bread bowl - So Ono it comes with a side I got a potato salad cup! It's just over $10 and it will fill you up! Not the best but one of the best chili's I have ever had. The sour dough bread bowl was good but not great, it was also a little too soft for sour dough. They also cook Lau Lau pork, soups, sandwiches, and plate meals. There is something for anyone and everyone. Food is cooked fresh right there! I have not been here for breakfast yet but I am hoping too in the future! This is family owned and operated just the way I like it! They are so nice they even have a television outside you can watch while you eat with covered seating - protection from the sun and rain and this area gets plenty of both!
