I love Asian Buffet's. I've been to bad ones before, I've been to great ones before. East Buffet is definitely top tier. The General Tso's chicken is crispy and covered in a spicy sweet sauce, the Fried Rice and LoMein are also both flavorful and cooked to asian buffet perfection. They have a sushi roll section witch you don't see at every Asian buffet and always scores extra points with me! They also have a Mongolian grill.. another plus and a hard to find Austin Asian buffet feature. I cant help but think in the overall scheme of Asian buffets this is one of the best in town.. the only other buffet who can even compete is Buffet Palace and I don't think they are better just different. I love Yelp almost as much as much as I love Asian buffets.. reading some of my fellow Yelper's reviews for East Buffet however left me almost disillusioned with the review process in general. You look at the review by Michael B. by "Two stars because they don't make even a token attempt to accommodate vegetarians," such a bullshit statement. There's plenty of steamed vegetables and items that would work for any vegetarian. You might wanna keep an eye on the Mongolian grill cook. I've had them use the same plate that had raw meat on it to serve the finished product. And the dude tonight (12/5) was super rude. He was impatient with me deciding which steak I wanted so he was gonna hurriedly pick one for me and just throw it on the grill. I had to assertively tell him No, I need to salt n peppa that hunk a meat before you go an throw it on the grill. That irritated him immensely and he scoffed at me. I mean seriously?? Anyways, it's sad really because the Mongolian grill is becoming the only thing worth coming here for. I feel the quality isn't the same as when they first opened. At that time they had clams, but no more. Sadness. And I swear some of the dishes like the beef and broccoli were more flavorful. Now they taste really bland. On the positive, for the time being it is still way cleaner than the Harbor place across the street. So there's that. read more

This buffet is ok. I tried several buffet dishes and nothing stood out. It was a packed Wednesday night and nothing seemed fresh. Everything was just warm. My 4 year old loved the fried rice. I'm surprised I didn't liked their rangoons which I usually love mostly everyones but theirs lacked crunch and flavor. The only treat here is the Mongolian grill. You can get fresh prepared food and I highly recommend the beef and shrimp lo mein. I would say I came on an off day but it was packed in here so I would expect them to keep the buffet fresh and hot. The sections are very clearly labeled and the buffet is clean. At the very baseline, that's pretty decent for a buffet already. At the price that it is though really does put it a cut above many other buffets in Austin. Food is what you would expect at your typical chinese buffet. Everything is a-ok from the mongolian grill to sushi to fried foods to desserts. Nothing truly outstanding but nothing to dread either. Personal favorites include the chicken wings - they're crisp, seasoned well and a joy to munch on, lo mein even though they're mostly filler, they season it well. This buffet is identical to Buffet King at 35/290, from the set up to the food offerings to the font on the sign, so it's clearly run by the same people. That means the Southside now has a pretty solid Asian Buffet, with a healthy Mongolian-type grill, good choices in fresh and canned fruit, yummy chicken wings, good soup that doesn't rely on MSG, decent though dull sushi, and other good choices. The downside is the same as it is at Buffet King: weird prepackaged-type cakes for dessert, Sesame and General Tso Chicken that both taste like they came from the freezers at the dollar store, and the inexplicable compulsion to melt cheese over things like salmon and creamed spinach. I understand the desire to duplicate a formula that's working fine at the other restaurant, but at both places, I really wish they'd up their sushi game (Volcano Rolls!), reformulate the General Tso's, and rotate some new dishes in occasionally. read more

A waiter came around often to fill my water and remove used plates. But the food is average Chinese buffet food. Similar to other buffets, such as the one across the street. For that price, I do not see how they could have high quality Chinese food. Such as entrees that would be purchased at a traditional Chinese restaurant. Good location, good food, ok prices and clean restaurant; but the cook at the Mongolian BBQ grill was a douche. Ordered through Uber Eats for delivery and wasn't very impressed to the say the least. We ordered orange chicken, general tsaos chicken, and egg rolls. The chicken in both dishes were nothing to write home about and were wayyyy too overly sauced. They were drowning in sauce that wasn't very good at all. The chicken which should have been easily delicious and fried were overall pretty soggy and full of cartilage which is pretty disturbing. The egg rolls tasted awful. I live in San Marcos and I've been to a bunch of Chinese buffets and yesterday was my first time at this one. And I want to say that this is the best buffet i've ever been to. I promise you its worth the $14! They have so much options to pick from. First thing is they have a stir fry were you build your own plate by making your own sauce, picking your meat, picking either noodles or rice, then they cook it in right in front of you. It took maybe 5-7 mins max. They also have a sushi bar right next to it. Behind it is the regular buffet you see normally but with so many different options. They also serve seafood with different options from just crawfish . Also regular american food, then your dessert bar. I'm definitely coming back again. read more

Southeast Austin definitely needed a good Asian buffet on this side of the interstate. I might be a little late to the train but I'm glad I finally discovered East Buffet. They say they are the biggest buffet and that is probably true. There were so many options which was impressive. They have something for just about anyone here - even those picky eaters ... I saw pizza on the buffet. They have a nice sushi bar where you can watch the chef roll and prepare the sushi. Another feature to the buffet that you don't see in most places in the Mongolian grill. The seafood section was expansive and impressive too. Most everything I tried was delicious. The buffet was kept clean and serviced throughout my entire visit. Just had my 1st visit here and was VERY pleased! Upon entry, the ambience and cleanliness were quickly apparent. It is extremely organized and it's obvious they've an excellent staff of actual Chinese citizens who speak both Chinese and English. The food...just wonderful. I usually eat at a different buffet (see my other reviews). But today, we decided to try something different and were extremely happy with our visit. The manager, Stephen, was an incredibly professional, kind and overall great person as well. He took the time to speak with me personally, shook my hand like a man and just a terrific guy. That may not mean anything to other's but when someone takes time to speak with me peraonally and give a good honest handshake, they have my respect. Parking is good. Food is terrific. Two stars because they don't make even a token attempt to accommodate vegetarians, then reduced to one star because the owner's response completely missed the point. (The problem isn't that they're not a vegetarian restaurant, it's that the don't make the *smallest effort* to accommodate them, unlike just about every other place in town. e.g., Threadgill's is so meat-heavy they're practically a slaughterhouse, but they still offer a few veg*n choices and the menu labels them clearly.) That's in sharp contrast to East Buffet, which doesn't offer classic Chinese dishes which also happen to be vegetarian, like anything with tofu, or Buddha's Delight (steamed or stir-fried vegetables), vegetable spring rolls, etc. Almost every buffet I've been to that serves sushi has vegetable sushi, but not here. The best vegetarians can do here is lo mein, green beans, fried potatoes, and a custom stir-fry on the Mongolian grill (using the same grill and utensils they use to cook meat, but at least they clean the grill & utensils very well between orders). Decor exceeds Buffet Palace. This is probably the nicest-looking Chinese buffet restaurant in the Austin area. I didn't feel queasy here as I have every time I've eaten at the similar China East Buffet in Round Rock (formerly Ye Star Buffet), though it's probably the same owners, since the setup and offerings were rather similar. read more

You can do a lot better in this area for Chinese buffet. I ordered General's Chicken, my friend ordered chicken and broccoli. I couldn't tell the difference of the two in spite of General's has a brown sauce and Thai peppers. My General's chicken was hot, the one good thing. Three trees of broccoli was all that was in there. No peppers. My friend said his chicken and broccoli was no better. Plenty of chicken, in one mass cooked together. If my sinuses are correct, there is a mess of MSG in there. I also ordered spring rolls, which became wontons. It's a buffet restaurant, but maybe the food is better on the bar, but I doubt it. This place has is a ridiculous business practice to charge someone who has a smaller stomach size the same price as their grownups. We were charged the price of an adult for my 11-year-old, who is way shorter and skinner than us. In fact, I think all of my son's classmates are not of the size of their parents, rarely do they get adult size at 11 years old. Also we didn't see the price listed at the waiting area/door/entrance. If you're coming here for fresh seafood just go ahead and forget about it. Sushi is just a mountain of rice with an old, smelly, razor thin slice of what looks and smells to be nasty fish. Came for the crab legs but turns out they're just deep fried. Asked if they had a steamed or boiled option but the lady acted as if I was speaking a foreign language. Even the clams are soaked in this gross sticky, sugary sauce- inedible. Tried the baked salmon but it defied all preconceived notions I had about reality. It looked halfway decent, but upon biting into it, it just turns out to be this disgusting brown mush that was NOT fish at all. I will probably spend the rest of my life contemplating what exactly that is. I feel bad for the regulars here because they are all so overweight & sad because they eat the deep fried, oil soaked, sugary fake foods that this place does so well.
