I honestly do enjoy buffet palace. They have a pretty good array of food types - it's not the most authentic by any means (esp the sushi; think HEB/grocery store quality - gets the job done but NOT really authentic). Nevertheless, it does taste good imo! Something that kinda sucks is how expensive it's become; my family has been coming here from time to time for about 20 years and it's at the point where getting a couple to-go containers ($12 per pound on weekends/dinner time) will end up costing you $60 or more depending on how much food you add. It's not more than if you went to a sit down restaurant really, but it's still just... pricey. It used to be less for sure, but price increases are ubiquitous these days. I hate buffets but keep getting convinced to come here sometimes when I'm in town. They have a low rating, but not the lowest in town. This place has signs saying they're celebrating their 25th anniversary and it shows. In fact, it's so rundown inside, you would think it opened in the 1980s. Their selection is decent and they do have a couple types of fresh meat grilled in front of you, the short ribs and the korean beef squares. Their fresh green beans aren't bad either. Try the raw blue crab legs if you dare. I did try some of the sushi since I needed to eat light due to a second dinner on my most recent visit. Most of their rolls are made with fake crab pieces or fake crab mix with various toppings across the top of the cut roll. There were like 2 with actual raw fish, one was a spicy tuna roll and the other had either salmon or tuna across the top. None of the sushi is very good quality, as you typically see at buffets. Their desserts are nothing to write home about either. Their sesame balls aren't bad. We had 14 in our group so we ended up getting seated in their very back room which is not very appealing and has no windows. Service is average at best for a buffet restaurant. You can tell some of the employees don't actually want to be there. I am tempted to give it 1 star but I feel bad because this place is nostalgic to us. We've been coming here since the original owners began this restaurant over 30yrs ago. We've had big events here bdays, grad events, family gatherings because it's nostalgic and yes mostly at nights. BUT every time I called to reserve that room that back room where we have had many parties the front person or host would brush me off saying don't worry it's a weekday we just opened no one here just come. I emphasized it's for a party of 30 and we need that room to decorate and seat us all together. He was adamant it's ok just come. I called a week later and the phone line kept saying busy. I called the day after during store hours no answers I thought this place was closed. I already sent invites out and guests were to arrive. I almost changed venues. I should have. We called again this past weekend on a Friday night then Saturday morning then Sunday morning um NO ONE answers the phone! It was busy all day???. I even texted. I asked a question here. No answer. I needed to know this place will be open and ready for 30 guests. Finally my daughter called yesterday during lunch lol and surprisingly someone answered. What a relief. He yawned while talking to her but he assured yes just come no need to reserve and you can have the room. We asked will you be ready for 30 people and fresh food? He said yes no one here noon on a Tuesday. Um ok. Well we got there the back room is closed. No AC. They quickly prepared tables for 30 outside. It was done. Fine. BUT the food was such a disappointment. 75% of the food is not fresh. It's like they reheated old food. Why would you do that? The sushi rice was crunchy. Hard. On some. The fried stuff was stale. Old. The chicken stuff was old and dry. The fried rice was stale. The soups were ok. Beef was gone in many beef dishes and they didn't replenish the food fast enough for the whole place. The place looked dirty and the tables are sticky. The floors were greasy and slippery. The whole place looked dark and dank and broken. Only the fried fish 2nd batch was good. That's all I ate! I can go on and on but it was just not good. And I think the Asian owner and manager knew it too. I overheard and even talked to them saying we've been coming here for over 30yrs and no one answered my calls when I wanted to reserve to make sure fresh food is available for 30. I emphasized it was important because I knew my guests are foodies and restaurant owners. I called too many times to warn them and have things ready. That's all they have to do. Is be prepared. There are reasons why I ask for this. 2 restaurant owners were in my group. Half the people I invited know the previous owners and knew how good this place used to be. Now all 30 will think twice before they come back. So it was not a smart business move to not be ready for a huge party no matter what time of day we come. It doesn't have to be a weekend. Lunch buffet still has to be fresh and available. Do not bring our stale old food to get rid of first. Where is the logic on this? Food has to be fresh. Host and people working in the front has to be attentive and cordial and working. The waitstaff was but not the host or hostess esp not the ones answering phones. They looked tired and checked out. And yes dropping calls for a week was a big warning. I thought they were closed due to health inspections or something. Anyways you get my drift. Sorry to say this was our last straw and attempt especially because we brought so many people and we hoped for a good meal and gathering but the food and atmosphere was pretty disappointing. Monday through Thursday their lunch buffet costs $14.99. On Friday Saturday and Sunday it cost $17.99. This joker handed me a bill for 1999 which said on top that that was the price for Friday Saturday and Sunday which it is not. So from that it looked like he was overcharging people and then probably pocketing the difference. So I didn't ask him to fix it I went to the hostess and showed her that I was overcharged and that it needed to be changed. My newish waiter with the black fingernails comes back to my table with panic written all over his face. Outstanding! My son and his family recently visited Austin and their hotel was right around the corner from this location, and it was chosen purely because of proximity and it had excellent reviews. It's located in an older but well maintained shopping center area. The decor is appropriate although quite dated but very nice. The staff is friendly, very quick to serve and get out of the way. the buffets were numerous and the food was sumptuous. there was a great assortment of sushi to be had. There was also Vietnamese, Korean, Thai food as well as all your standard favorite American Chinese dishes. There were numerous cold salads, 4 soups were available and very good. They have numerous desserts including your usual ice cream for the kids. It's located on West Gate just south of Ben White Blvd 290 & 71. It's really great stuff, hot and fresh. It's called an "all-you-can-eat" Asian restaurant, but there is neither freshness nor variety. Most of the food on the buffet looked dried out and clearly had been sitting there for hours. The sushi was completely inedible, both visually and in taste. The rice was mushy, and the fish smelled bad. Hot dishes were cold, and cold dishes were somehow lukewarm. The same trays just kept rotating with no real refills or updates. The whole concept of an all-you-can-eat buffet seems to be completely misunderstood here. Hygiene was the most disturbing part. Serving utensils were dirty, the buffet area was messy, and the floors were sticky. You genuinely start questioning whether it's even safe to eat there. This level of lack of control is unacceptable for a buffet restaurant. The staff were uninterested and clearly burned out. Asking a simple question felt like an inconvenience to them. Tables weren't cleared, and we were left sitting with dirty plates. The price, considering the experience, is a complete joke. This quality does not justify the cost in any way. Went here for my nieces 15th Bday. The host was rude and did not say anything, he just started walking away and with uncertainty that he was guiding us we followed anyways and were placed in the back. The floors are sticky, the tables are dirty, and it is disgustingly dim. The buffet is not well managed but it is full. People were using tongs and throwing them back into the buffet dishes and the counter stayed filthy. Overall I will never come back here and I'll make sure to let others know this isn't a place worth keeping open. What can I say about buffets? All you can eat. I've been to many buffets, and honestly, this is one of the best for the price. Everything was fantastic except the egg rolls. All the other food made up for that. All the veggies were fresh, and all the food was prepared well and at perfect temperature. I had to go back for seconds of the fried rice as that was absolutely perfect. The service was fast and friendly. There's a large free parking lot. Disabled parking spaces. Entrance into the restaurant has two wide doors, easy access for wheelchairs. I looked around at other patrons to see how they were enjoying their meal. And, yes, they had big smiles on their faces. It gets fairly crowded at times, but everyone seems to mesh together well and stay out of each others way. I'd be careful with some of the seafood, but the cooked Asian/American food is pretty good. This is a solid choice for a Chinese Food buffet given that few buffets are ever outstanding by the very nature of being food cooked for groups of varying tastes for long periods of time. They have a wide variety including your Chinese buffet standards along with a noodle bowl option, sushi, cold sides, and of course an array of desserts. The food was plentiful and they did a good job of refreshing the food during our visit. The sauces on the sesame chicken, orange shrimp, and green beans were very good. The fried foods were very crisp but some of the food did seem a bit overcooked. Our servers were nice and attentive and did a good job coming by to get drink orders when new people joined our party and kept your glasses filled and plates cleared. The food here has really gone downhill since my last visit several years ago. I'm not sure how they did it, but the crab & cheese stuffed wontons tastes extremely undercooked and stale at the same time. The egg rolls seemed to be mostly cabbage and had no flavor. I was excited to see Vietnemese spring rolls until I bit into the first one. it was basically noodles and lettuce and the peanut sauce looked and tasted like it was never changed, but just occasionally topped off. The fried orange shrimp were a chewy disaster coated in thick, congealed sauce. The fried rice was the best part of my meal which is really sad. We each got an ice cream cone, but somehow it seemed as though a lot of water and was added in. I've never had soft serve ice cream taste like this...how do you mess up a little cone with a bizarre ice plus some kind of white congealed liquid is beyond me. I understand pinching pennies, but it would be better to just get rid of the ice cream machine. The kicker was our bill for 2 people with no drinks...41.88 with a 15% tip! We did recently go there this past Sunday. Online it said the price was $14.95 a person. That was clearly wrong. We took our three grandchildren, 7, 9, and 13. When we got our bill it was $108 for the five of us. That included a discount for the nine and the 7-year-old. There was no printed receipt to let us know what the exact prices were per person. But the bill was shocking! They did have a very genuine variety of Asian foods and a lot of seafood and sushi. I can understand having higher prices for the kinds of food that they made available. However, not knowing all this we went there expecting to eat at a buffet with our three grandchildren. There was no way that they were ever going to be able to eat their money's worth or even close since most of the foods they served were not foods that children eat. We did not know that before going. We've been to plenty of Asian buffets before and never had this problem and paid a lot less. I'm sure it's a great deal for people who eat a lot of the kind of foods that they serve. However, that wasn't our family. We were looking for the basics. But nowhere in their online profile did it make it clear what we were getting ourselves into until it was too late. If you're looking for a place that serves a lot of seafood with legs still attached etc and several other more authentic Asian salads etc This place might be for you. For what it is, a high-volume, low-cost Asian buffet, this place is among the best, IMHO. Nothing is really exquisite, like made to order pricey places would serve, but it's all fresh, good, and satisfying. The sushi is fine, and mostly consists of various rolls. You won't find nigari or sashimi here, they just stick with what they can make in their parameters. Not too much cream cheese crap, and, if like me, you find cream cheese to be an abomination where sushi is concerned, you can avoid it entirely. I wish they had a good seaweed salad like you get at sushi joints, but the salads they do have are excellent. I especially like the Bean Sprout and Spinach varieties. They have the other standard Asian buffet stuff, including chicken wings and dumplings and green beans. They also have way better dessert options than their closest rival, Buffet King up north. Food is just ok but what really stands out is state of repair of the building. Flooring is completely worn out. All furniture is worn and dingy. Bathrooms, including the hallway to the bathrooms, have wet floors with fans placed to dry (and the fans look like they're permanent). The stucco outside is damaged and poorly patched. Ice cream machine "out of order" sign looked like it had been there weeks. Honestly looks like no serious repair or maintenance since the original opening years ago. In need of a full renovation. It was also very cold and had a very nasty flavor to it. The whole restaurant looked like it was in a state of decay, the bathrooms were vile, and the tables and chairs looked as though they hadn't been cleaned at all.
