Yo! Ive only have one thing at the East End Grill for years. I've ordered the exact same thing which are the wings. This time. They were horrible I mean, horrible! I will never do it again. They will never get my money again. The chicken wings were dry hard and could barely be bitten through Not to mention these mofos charged a service fee and extra sauce fee a takeout fee and nobody likes this particular bartender let me just say that including me yuck I didn't see our people in the kitchen. I was invited to come out, and it was worth a visit! It's been a while since I've been to a dive bar. This one seems to have all the notes of a low-frills open-late bar. I've visited East End Grill before and found it to be quite a crowd pleaser because of the diverse menu. I was pleased to see they were open during an ice storm when other parts of town had been forced to close. This was my husband's first visit and he enjoyed the catfish platter. He found the French fries to be just the thick style he liked with a great creamy potato texture. I really liked the chicken breakfast club. So often burgers are topped with egg, but rarely chicken. The chicken was juicy and properly cooked. I opted did they potato skins and they were tasty too. The server was friendly and attentive. I called in an order for the 4 strip catfish basket but I don't think that's what I got. First off, they were overcooked. Very overcooked. Three of them were hard to even bend. . They also tasted like and had the consistency of fish sticks like cod or pollock in my mouth. (Maybe swai?) Only one of them was corn floured. The other three looked as if they were maybe beer battered. I ate one because I was starving but couldn't finish the others. They were just too burned. I'm a big fan of "hole in the wall" places and East End Grill is not your shiny polished venue. It does have a ton of character and personally, I like the vibe. Lots of locals show up here so chances are you'll look like an outsider, but still a good watering hole. I'm a huge red beans and rice fan and they've never disappointed me here. Great flavor and came out piping hot. I sat out on the patio and after the first 5 minutes I was the only one sitting there around dinner time. Waitress was friendly and fast and ordered and had my food in about 10 minutes. I'll be back for more. read more

The positive: the waiter was friendly. But, I cannot tell you how bad the food is here. I ordered fish and chips. With one bite the entire piece of fish came out of the breading whole. It was tough as shoe leather and tasted older than Memphis. I then ordered a $13 turkey burger and fries. By the way, read the menus carefully, even though it looks like it is written in 9pt font. Did you know their burgers DO NOT come with fries? Well, they don't. The turkey burger tasted like a piece of pressed sawdust dipped in chicken broth for a nano second. I piled on salt and pepper. It was utterly unredeemable. I cannot believe how bad the food has gotten in these restaurants since COVID. And, I paid $24! No beverage. Just water. By the time they tacked on $3 for a few greasy fries that tasted like they had seen too many days, and $1 for a slice of cheese. People, unless all you want is a beer, I would try another place if you want edible food. I paid for my meal and gave the manager feedback. This place is a Memphis local original. East End Grill has been in my life as long as I can remember. My Dad used to take me here when I was a kid. They had the best damn fried cheese balls in the world, served with an awesome Honey Mustard. The original location at Mendenhall and Knight Arnold was where I have the most memories. Too bad it's a damn Title Max now! A big blue eye sore and a mark of social injustice where I had so many good times. Oh well. What to do? On to this location... we used to come here pretty frequently when it first opened. I'm not sure how it fell out of our rotation but it did. I've been back maybe three or four times in last decade, mostly for lunch by myself. My most recent visit was with the family and I felt it was time to review. I will say that after looking at the menu this time it has to be the biggest, most diverse, bar menu I have ever seen. Let's face it, this is a bar, first and foremost, without a doubt, a bar. 15-20 people drinking at the bar at noon on a Sunday, bar. It is a pretty impressive food line up for a bar I must say. They still have cheese balls but they aren't the same. If my memory is correct they used to be Monterey Jack cheese originally, and then it was a mix of Jack and Cheddar, now it's just Cheddar. They still have the Honey Mustard though. I've had the Red Beans and Rice and it's pretty good. I've had a bunch of burgers that were all solid. My French Dip was great last time and the onion thingers were really good, the sauce that came with them was great. My wife had a boring BLT with Egg. My youngest had pancakes and I was ready for a disaster. They arrived and were some of the best I've ever had. She didn't even put any syrup on them at all. The only bad part of the meal was her bacon. It was obviously cooked in a fryer, probably because someone forgot to cook it before the other food was ready. Regardless it was limp and chewy and not that good. Anyway, it's worth a visit, especially if your drinking and looking for a place with pretty good bar food. I wish they could identify the source of the sour smell in there though. It would really help the vibe if it was all cleaned up in there. Whatever you do, don't look inside the duct work in here. Ewwww. Remember this place used to be thick with cigarette smokers chain smoking for years. Combine that with all the grease and yuck! My experience here was not nearly as good as what I've gotten from Bartlett. Maybe I could have ordered something better from the menu, but I thought soup and sandwich would hit the spot on a rainy day. The grilled cheese was partially burned. Not too bad though. Maybe only a quarter of one side was inedible. They played it off by serving it good side up as if I wouldn't discover it. Then the chicken noodle soup wasn't hot at all. It might have been 100*, but it wouldn't have burned a baby's tongue. It would be a good serving temperature for a nursing home, but not a restaurant. And instead of noodles, there was some kind of pasta which was more akin to dumplings. And when I chose a bowl over a cup, I was surprised to see that the bowl is no more than the size of a cup. Nothing impressive at all. In fact, if I spend $20 for soup and sandwich for lunch, I expect a lot better than this. And it really does bother me that the owner chooses to forbid firearms. To me, this disrespects all the efforts of courageous heroes who have fought so hard to preserve our freedoms. I have tolerated it at Bartlett and have a friend who likes to meet there, but I've at least been impressed by their food. At this point, I'm willing to try it just one more time. read more

I've been to the one in Bartlett, which is better, so this is for the location on Winchester in Memphis. The signature burger I had last night tasted literally rancid. I think it's possible they either cooked the onion rings in oil that has turned bad or the burger on the same spot as some sort of bad fish. I couldn't get the taste out of my mouth for hours. Between the food never being better than mediocre and the automatic 18% service charge that they do not tell you about, I will not eat here again. read more

18% SERVICE CHARGE FOR WHAT?? The food is what you'd expect, the service is usually slow but I can handle that because it's generally a busy place. The reason I'm giving them two stars is the 18% service charge on every order. The sign that states this is really small, you don't expect that charge to be there except for with large parties. I dont mind a service charge but make it known. We tipped 20% on top of that charge and so we paid 38% on top of our regular bill. We have plenty of family and friends who had no idea of this charge and have been going here for years. read more

We had the barbecue nachos and southwest egg rolls for apps... the nachos were very good, the egg rolls tasted like something i could've gotten from the frozen section of Kroger! We also had philly steak sandwich which was ok... not really memorable. The pop boom po boy was pretty tasty but it wasn't really what was described! It was supposed to be shrimp tossed in a sauce, but there was really just some sauce drizzled in the top Of it! My niece had a patty melt which she said was dry but flavorful, the fries were really good! We also had a 19th hole and a margarita which were very good! They automatically charge you 18% gratuity which the waitress said is split among all the staff! The only staff we seen the entire time was her! So i guess the cook gets half? The food must have been microwaved. My husband ordered chargrilled redfish and the stuffed potato. The fish was rubbery and dry. It needed to be cut with a knife. The potato must have been over blended and tasted like it came from a box mix. It cost an additional $6.50 even though a side was supposed to be included with the over priced $17.95 fish. My husband recently had teeth implants and needs to eat soft foods. He had to send his back unfinished. I ordered the red pepper cheese soup and a French dip sandwich. The soup was lumpy and the beef on the bread was bland and brown. Last night I had the worst acid reflex I have ever had. We did mention our concern to the waiter. He became defensive and told us he had eaten the fish and potato often and it was always good. He offered to bring out something else. However with both of us having a bad meal, we chose not accept his offer. They were busy as they have a big Happy Hour on Fridays and the bar was filled with lots of people drinking. Ok, this is a bar and grill and isn't a five star restaurant. But I wanted to at least counteract some of the ridiculous stuff I've seen on here that almost kept me from going. 1. They don't automatically add an 18% gratuity to your tab. When your check comes, it is one of those that offers suggested gratuity's and they range from 18-22%. I chose the 22% option which actually saved me money. 2. The bartender is most certainly not some kind of rude a-hole. I didn't interact much, but he was very polite, knowledgeable and accommodating on the few requests I had. 3. The place doesn't smell, no sour smell, no disinfectant smell. 4. The bar menu was huge. I had the red beans and rice- very passable for Memphis, in fact the best I have had here outside of Popeye's. I don't stay on this side of Memphis often, but when I do, I will certainly be back.
