Did not live up the hype, sadly. A few locals really talked this place up and I wish they hadn't: it was just okay. The best part about our visit to East of Suez was the somewhat uniqueness of the venue: a home turned into a restaurant. The menu was big. Too big in my opinion. I was a bit overwhelmed with choices, but ended up getting the Tonkatsu Jaeger Schnitzel. The pork cutlet did not taste freshly made - likely prepared hours before and reheated. The panko breading was damp even on the parts not touching the mushroom cream sauce. The sauce itself was so bland, and tasted like canned mushroom soup. Sadly, I cannot recommend it based on my experience and knowing how difficult it was to get a reservation here. read more

Atmosphere and dining area great. Service was great as well. We spent two hours there as a big family dinner and they were very attentive. Food was ok, nothing great. Maybe my expectations were too high but the food wasn't anything groundbreaking but it was cooked well and tasted good. read more

I really...really want to give this place 5 stars because I love the food. But the kitchen really needs step up there game. We've been here 3 times and enjoyed the food each time. However, the service is spotty and the wait for food is ridiculous. This time, we had a 6:00 pm reservation. We ordered our appetizer and main course at the same time. The main courses also include a salad. I ordered a coke zero and my husband wanted a regular coke. This is the third time that he wanted one and they've been out of regular coke. How the heck do run out of coke... especially since they don't serve alcohol. We finally got our appetizer, the lumpia, which by the way is delicious, 45 minutes later. The salad finally came out 20 minutes later. We asked the waiter about the main course. He said he checked with the kitchen and they said in five minutes. 15 minutes later still waiting. Looking around we noticed that almost every table is dealing with the same issue. Honestly as much as I love the food...I doubt we will be back. read more

Far and away the best menu in Wolfeboro, and they have REALLY improved the service, which used to be pi** poor. Good for them! Had a great dinner last night, esp the large dumpling appetizer. We enjoyed the appetizers the most, and the general ambiance. This was our second visit. Last year we ordered a short rib dish and it was too tough to eat. Sent it back. This year tried the flank steak. Terrible cut, too much gristle. Won't be trying their beef dishes again! read more

Actually I wanted to give it the rating of "only" 4.5 ;) They've got 3 important positive marks: 1. great food (those Philippino dishes were indeed wonderful) 2. distinct and pleasing character in their ambience and menu 3. being the only good place in Wolfeboro which was opened on Tuesday afternoon Yes, they came out short on service level, and that's the gap between 4.5 and 5. Wonderful food, interesting dishes, fast service, a unique staple to the Wolfeboro restaurant scene. And BYOB, so less strain on the wallet.

Great food. Went for the end of year buffet and it was good but pretty pricy if you're not a big eater.

My favorite place in the area. BYOB though and people fully to took advantage of this fact. The table next to us had a table of 4 women with a handle of Tito's and a 2 liter of tonic, a 750 of rum, a bag of ice, and a cocktail shaker. Great food and nice people too. read more

I am a knucklehead. Why haven't I tried this place sooner? I mean it has been there for 55 years. Only opens for the summer and it is a treasure. The food is not typical of any particular ethnic origin. It certainly is not the Americanized version of Chinese food. They serve a marvelously eclectic variety of dishes from the the pan-pacific. There is a variety of influences (Chinese, Thai, Filipino, etc.) in their menu. And they deliver deliciousness. The decor of the restaurant itself reminds you that they have been around for 55 years. If an older couple traveled extensively throughout the Far East and returned to their summer place in Wolfeboro every year, it would look like East of Suez. Eclectic, charming and slightly out of date. But don't expect a remodel. The staff is very young and only there for the summer, so service can be a bit spotty. Relax and accept the fact that in this day and age it is remarkable that they can get a staff together at all for a brief three months of employment. It is BYOB, which is awesome! Reservations are mandatory. Bring your wine, your tastebuds and an open mind and you will not be disappointed. read more

This is easily my favorite restaurant. I've eaten here dozens of times, brought friends from out of town, and can't recommend it highly enough. The specials always change, and they're very popular so there's always a chance to try something new if they are sold out of something popular (dumplings, scallops, etc), and the options never disappoint. It's an eclectic collection of glasses where you can BYOB, and the decoration is so full of life as is the service. You can tell the community has rallied around this restaurant for decades, because it's been open for over 50 years, which is nearly unheard of. The food is a mixture of pan-Asian cuisines ranging from lumpia to bulgoki to tempura to Thai red curry (my personal favorite), and all my friends have their individual favorites we come back to (try anything with longanisa if they have it, it's incredible!) but we're always excited to share plates with something none of us have had. read more

Welcome to FLAVOR TOWN!! Made a reservation for 3 a few days ago and dined at East of Suez at 5:30 on a Wednesday. No wait. Asked to be seated outside on the screened in porch and was happily accommodated! . Wonderful, tasty, fresh food that was kind of exotic! We shared an appetizer of goat cheese crab Rangoon - crispy (not oily) with a chili dipping sauce. I had Philippine Adobo (pork belly and chicken thighs. Very tender and spiced just right for me-I requested a number 4 spicy out of 10. Came with rice, banana and orange. My companions ordered beef Bulgoki. Tender and juicy beef on a skewer with rice and kimchi. We also ordered shrimp and vegetable tempura. Broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, carrots and sweet potato tempura that was cooked perfectly and came with a dipping sauce. Everyone loved their meal and left very happy! I would recommend any of the menu options that we tried. Also, the wait staff were über friendly and efficient! Thank you! read more

The food is incredible! You can not go wrong with anything on the menu. Service, however, is not great. We needed water and plates cleared. The server checked on our meals when we were almost done. We had to ask for utensils. Also, we were there early and asked for a window seat (not crowded) and were told they were reserved, but when we left they were still empty. By far one of the worst dining experiences I have had. You walk in to an unfriendly staff to a small uncomfortable chair with a stark table. Water was served, no ice. Several of us ordered ginger ale which came in a can for a charge of $6.00. Salads came with the entree which was green bitters, 1/2 of a cherry tomato with a sliver of cucumber. Entrees we're pricey and over cooked and battered. After a long night with heart burn, relief with Alka Seltzer. To say the least we won't be back. read more

Unique place with excellent food and wonderful, eclectic decor. It's like visiting the home of a well-traveled friend who's decorated their place with curiosities from all over Asia. The menu is a diverse combo of Filipino things like pancit, which is like lo mein; Korean things like bulgogi (garlicky beef); Thai curries; spring and summer rolls; and pakora (fritters of cauliflower and sometimes broccoli, with a really tasty dipping sauce). These are the things we've tried, anyway, and they've all been good. The only reason I deducted one star is they have almost nothing to drink! Not only is it BYOB, but even the soft drinks listed on the menu are often unavailable. So if you want anything other than water, bring it with you! Note that they are only open from late June to about Labor Day. Every June, we wait eagerly for the big yellow sign with the setting sun to make its annual appearance! read more

Another phenomenal meal yesterday evening - the flavors always beyond words. East of Suez has been our favorite place to go for a summer dinner. COVID was an unexpected challenge (to say the least), especially for those in the restaurant industry, and the way in which East of Suez has navigated these challenges is inspiring. It is clear that Liz, her family and staff have gone above and beyond giving it their all this year. The end of summer somehow has a way of sneaking up, but if you have the chance - order takeout or reserve a safely socially distanced table to eat in. You won't be disappointed!! read more

Went with a large party and had a good time. We had booked a room to sit on the floor with cushions but they accommodated us when we changed because of several knee issues. The food was good especially the goat cheese wontons. One in our party found a bristle of a wire probably from brush to clean grill in food. They comped the meal. I had a seafood curry and ordered it medium and was not spicy enough for me. My friend said the same about her dish. So be not afraid you spice heads, order it hot!! read more

I did not eat at this restaurant but wish I had. The chef from Pickering House Inn told us about this place. I think it is on the fourth generation. Small quaint space but best Pan American food. Chef went there for his birthday and another guest at our inn ate there and said it was great. First time, I've rated a place without eating there. We attended the end of summer buffet tonight. I don't usually rate restaurants low, particularly in this economic environment, but it wasn't a good experience. The food was mediocre at best, and the service was slow and disorganized. The chicken Satay had no flavor at all. The sauces were decent. They don't carry any Pepsi or Coke. We did bring our own cocktails, but it took them a long time to get us some glasses. On the way out, we noticed a politically-charged sign hanging on the front of the building that is often offensive to people. That was the nail in the coffin for us with this establishment. I was so happy when I came to the town of Wolfeboro to see an authentic Pan Asian restaurant as a food option. East of Suez opens every summer and is well respected and well loved by many of the residents here. As a Filipino coming into New Hampshire I was so excited to see a lot of classic Filipino cuisine there. I ordered the lumpia, the adobo,the sans rival and flan. Everything I had was absolutely delicious and tasted just like home! The people in my party absolutely loved their food as well and we all ordered different things from the menu. All the staff was incredibly sweet and my party got all of our orders very quickly. The restaurant itself is quirky, spacious and feels very homey. We usually have an excellent experience here. Tonight we had a young waitress, she didn't seem to have any experience. She brought our drinks after we got our appetizers. She never brought our salads, so when the main course came I told her to forget my salad, my boyfriend got his but it was beyond drowning in dressing. It's BYOB, and I asked for ice, which she never brought. We were never offered a second glass of our drinks once finished. The waitress never came back to see if our meal was ok. Food was good, but at 27$ a plate, you expect better service. read more

They're website says they open at 5:00. We called at 5:30 for a take out order. They literally said they cannot accommodate us. What? How is that even possible?! You're basically open part-time and when you do open, you're unwilling to actually operate the business. We were a small group and we wanted to place an average sized order. I've never heard of a restaurant refusing business. Clearly this isn't a business but rather a hobby for the owners. It's a shame because Filipino food isn't commonly available and it's really delicious so they could be so successful with minimal effort. read more

We went here to celebrate a wedding engagement but were disappointed with both the food and service. I had the Pad Thai which was terrible given the price. It is BYO so we brough some wine which turned out to be the best part of the meal. I would recommend so other restaurants in the area which offer better food at a fair price. read more

First visit of many -- we've lived in Wolfeboro for almost two years and so many people told us about East of Suez (and its BYOB policy, which is awesome). Last night was our first dining experience, and we loved it. The setting, including the screened-in porch, was fantastic, and we loved all the art. Food was delicious -- only advice would be for diners to know that the Phad Thai is a little thicker (almost gravy-like) than you normally get -- we liked it, but didn't expect it. This place cracked me up, in a good way. It looked and felt like the porch of an old hippie's house that had been set up as a thrift shop... literally, there were all kinds of random items for sale inside, it was like a tag sale-slash-asianfusionrestaurant-slash-hippie'sporch. Which just added to the charm IMO. The food is pretty solid; our party tried multiple apps and entrees, and everyone was pretty happy with everything we ate. The highish prices and smallish portions are more in line with a major city than a small lake town, but that didn't really bother us: it was ~$17 for my tasty pancit, but I could have made it two meals so the portion size was substantial IMO, and the price was reflected in the quality and uniqueness of the food. Also, it's BYOB, so don't forget that you're really saving $$ on alcohol. Bummer that it's cash only, so come prepared. A unique dining choice amid a sea of subpar tourist joints. As a local, I look forward to this place opening all year. Firstly, you do not come here for the service. College kids without little to no experience as a professional server, can be slow at times and slightly awkward. However, all that can be completely overlooked by the charm that this little gem has to offer. This place is so kitschy and retro I can't even take it. Its like being in your crazy aunts house minus the cats. Tie dyed sarongs adorn every table and big bamboo fans cool the room. Be sure to make reservations, ask to be on the porch. They have no ac so the porch is ideal on warmer summer nights. The food here is at times, unreal. I can't say enough positive things about it. I wish the regular menu would change every year but have a daily rotation of specials keeps it interesting. I recently had a salmon special that was wrapped in nori with a yuzu butter, served on 'Japanese' rice with baby tempura bokchoy. Out of this world. The Japanese rice I'm pretty sure was butter and soy sauce which is a blissful combination for any dish. The Pad Thai and Philippine Adobo are both tried and true dishes as well. Definitely save room for dessert. San Rival and the daily Tiramisu special are my recommendations. Bring a couple bottles of wine, some patience and an open mind and you'll be greatly rewarded. It's clear that this place is a favorite amongst those who have discovered it's quirky charms, including my Dad and his wife. I like it fine, but don't entirely share their enthusiasm, giving it a solid three stars: A-OK! The restaurant - on Rt 28 between Alton and Wolfeboro - is a ramshackle seasonal joint with slanted floors, a breezy screened in porch (no AC inside), Asian themed decor and un-comfy bentwood chairs. No credit cards accepted - cash or check only. I suspect that one reason this place is popular is because it seems SO VERY DIFFERENT than the majority of available options in the lakes region. They serve (and proudly mix up) a variety of Asian flavors from Thai (Curry), Korean (Kimchee & Bulgogi, which they spell Bulgoki), Phillipine (Adobo), Japanese (Tempura & Yakatori), Chinese (Canton noodles) and Indian (Samosas). For this variety of flavors I find the menu strangely limited, as there are only 6 apps and 8 entree choices including nightly specials. We sampled the appetizers including spring rolls, cheese Rangoon, and a wasabi shumai, leaving other ordinary options such as satay, yakatori, and hot & sour soup for another day. There is nothing special here; I thought the apps lacked the imagination and flavor apparent in the entrees, and they were priced higher than I'm used to paying for better quality elsewhere. The spring rolls were better with the sauce they served with the Rangoon. The free rice chips are, on the other hand, hands down addictive. I wished they had the Crab and Corn fritters that I've read about, but no on two visits. Their salad, which comes with entree, and tends to be delivered before the apps, is greatly elevated by tasty tangy house made dressings which you should order on the side. You can purchase them to take home. I love the ginger dressing. Speaking of bottles - bring your own if you want alcohol. Their service is not a strength by any means, yet is casual and friendly, so arrive with patience, and expect to have to ask for things like water, wine glasses, specials menu, fresh cutlery, and perhaps your entree. The waitress, when delivering our check, dryly and succinctly inquired "You Done?". I swallowed a chuckle... The entrees are the clear stars here - no disappointments amongst the several I've sampled including the Bulgogi (a Korean BBQ steak), Trout with delish tempura asparagus, and a medium hot Red Curry with Shrimp and Scallops (small quibble - last night the shrimp were slightly overdone, and the scallop under). They feature thoroughly enjoyable, strong yet well balanced flavors, pleasing textures, and nice presentations. Portions are reasonable, and you will either lick your plate clean or, perhaps if you've had several apps, take the leftovers home with you. We did a little of both. The desserts looked tempting - and on one occasion we tried a decidedly un-Asian yet decadent chocolate, coffee ice and Kaluha concoction. Another great meal at East of Suez. The goat cheese Rangoon is delectable, so I'm told by the rest of the party and the Tom Yum soup was tasty as well. The red snapper was delicious, as was the accompanying turmeric rice. My Red curry was packed with shrimp and scallops. The mango tiramisu was exceptional. Went early on a Sunday evening to celebrate a birthday. We had made reservations and requested some specialty dishes due to dietary concerns. The food was nearly perfect. The specialty items were flawless. The rangoon could have been better....most of them split and had no goat cheese in them. Still tasty, but not ideal. The staff were friendly and accommodating. We recently ate here on a Friday night. Service was lacking. We ordered the beef satay for an appetizer- it literally had no flavor despite having a peanut sauce and it was not seasoned. We ate a piece of one skewer and then notified the waitress that we didn't like the appetizer. She asked if we would like something else so we ordered the summer rolls (they were mediocre). Despite leaving 80 percent of the first appetizer we were informed at the end that they would have to charge us because we ate some of it! Our main course dishes were ok- I ordered a steak dish and it was properly cooked but the sauce tasted like it was out of a jar. My husband had a red curry that was just average and under seasoned. Overall overpriced and ridiculous to have to pay for a bad appetizer. Food is not worth the price and service can be improved. read more
