My son's high school friend lives in Germany but graduated from a local private school. We took her along with another friend and both our kids to East Side for an authentic German meal. We went for lunch on a very cold Sunday. The place was fairly empty with a few other groups braving the cold. Inside it was warm and welcoming and it quickly became easy to see why this place is so popular! We started with a couple 1l Warsteiners and some mixed drinks. The Apple strudel shot was amazing! A few appetizers for the table. The stuffed mushrooms and I know it's cliche but the Bavarian pretzel were outstanding! It was such a cool experience checking out this restaurant! The staff is very energetic and you can tell they love their jobs! You have to order the big beers to get them to do the chanting and my god is it a blast! The sauce of the stuffed mushrooms were fantastic, we really enjoyed the pretzel with the mustards but weren't a fan of the liver pate with it. They always have specials so I tried the duck. Many years of seeing their advertisements, I finally made it to the New Britain institution. What took me so long to get here? What a great place and atmosphere! It included an accordion player, servers dressed in authentic German attire and chanting with the crowed. The service was spot on! Food was authentic German cuisine and it was delicious! We started with potato pancakes, corn fritters and large pretzel. We were served liter mugs of Oktoberfest beer! "Ticky Tocky Ticky Tocky HOY HOY HOY!" Happy Thanksgiving 2024 Yelpers, and I hope you are all having a great time! Normally, I do not eat out for Thanksgiving, but I did have a brother visit from Florida for the day, so my mom made a reservation for us at this restaurant to have our Thanksgiving dinner. While I didn't quite remember the place at first, it turns out that I have actually been here once before. I know this because of the spanker they have here. Parking can be a pain, and the exterior don't look like much, but once you set foot it's another ball game. You will be asked if you prefer it to be quiet or loud; we ended up choosing loud. Right when you're seated in the loud section, you get a sense for how festive it is inside here. It's actually quite spectacular when you get to the chants. There is a lot of food and drink to get to for our Thanksgiving specials. We had the Hot Spiked Ciders that were special for the holiday. You can get a Das Boot for your beer which my mom got, and my brother and I each got a beer flight. The Wurst Platter was the Starter we went with, and we were also given saltines with sauerkraut and cottage cheese. For the main course, mom got the Thanksgiving turkey dinner with spaetzle and a German Wedding soup, my brother the Half Roast Long Island Duckling with the potato pancake, and then I had the Pork Tenderloin with potato pancake. For dessert, there was the pumpkin pie and the chocolate creme pie. To sum it all up, we all were impressed with what we ordered. Normally, I would not have gravy on food and that won't change in the future, but this time around the gravy was good. My brother is normally not one for mustard, but he thought it was good. All around everything was delicious. Their only blemish is the dunkel that was one of the drinks in my flight, but I will just chalk that up to the fact that dark, bitter beers are just not my thing. The lager and wheat ones were really good. Service was on-point too. We had our waitress check in on us as we were eating and was nice basically throughout. Wait time wasn't too bad given we were far from the only people who came here. Remember, when we got here, every parking space was taken and we had to wait for someone to pull out before we could park. And in here it did almost feel like a kind of party going on in the establishment. If you come here often enough, you can join their loyalty clubs. I didn't get a chance to see much of how they worked, but you can count hundreds of beer glasses hanging from the ceiling piece. There is also a mural you can look at from your table on the wall if you are more the kind of person to appreciate the artwork in this place. Best place to go for excellent German food, amazing entertainment, and authentic German ambiance! My sister said it looked just like the German bier gardens when she was in Germany. The hosts are amazingly warm, friendly, and funny. The Ticki Tocki Ticki Tocki Hoy! Hoy! Hoy! cheer can really only be fully appreciated in-person. It was so much fun. The potato pancakes were spot on - just the right flavor and crispiness. I ordered the Jager Snitzel based on the recommendation of our server, Maddie (who was wonderful!). I'm not a fan of pork normally but it was super tender and the brown gravy was to die for. I asked for extra and finished that with a spoon. YUM. My sister ordered the sauerbraten and loved it with the spaetzle. I also really liked that they had three types of NA beer as I don't drink alcohol. The Claushaler was delicious. I also participated in the bier stien holding contest, which was way harder than I thought it was going to be. My only complaint is that I didn't start coming here sooner!! East Side Restaurant is a German restaurant and biergarten that opened in New Britain, Connecticut in 1934. It was founded by Steffi and Eddie Walters. The location was formerly a grocery store. It was transformed into a German restaurant at a time when trolley cars still ran down Dwight Street. The restaurant was later sold to Bill and Ruth Bloethe. Steffi and Eddie relocated to Old Saybrook where they successfully ran the Dock and Dine for several years afterwards. The Bloethes ran East Side for over 40 years while they raised their children. They expanded the dining room and commissioned a beautiful mural inside. Just prior to 2000, East Side was purchased by Nick, Barbara and Shari Augustino. They worked closely with the Bloethes to ensure that the important East Side traditions would continue for decades to come. The Augustinos have made two renovations and expansions to the restaurant in order to capture the look of the Hofbrauhaus in Munich, Germany. My wife and I have enjoyed visits to East Side a number of times over the years. It's always nice to get an authentic taste of Germany. We stopped in for dinner with our two sons this past weekend in honor of Oktoberfest. Of course, at East Side it is Oktoberfest everyday! I own my very own East Side beer boot which the staff are happy to fill every time I visit. On this occasion I filled my boot with Spaten's "Oktoberfest" while my wife had a "Mango Tango Martini" (Tito's Homemade Vodka, Absolut Mango, Fruja Mango). For appetizers, we all shared a plate of "German Potato Pancakes" (side of applesauce and sour cream) and a "Giant Bavarian Pretzel" (side of Bavarian Obatzda Cheese, zen mustard and liver pâté). For entrees, I had the "Wiener Schnitzel" (breaded cutlet topped with a sunny side egg and a wedge of lemon), my wife had the "East Side Reuben" (slices of corned beef layered with homemade sauerkraut, melted cheese, tangy Thousand Island dressing, grilled marble rye bread), our older son had the "Burgermeister Plate" (knockwurst served over sauerkraut and topped with demi-glaze) and our younger son had "Spätzle" (with marinara sauce). Growing up in the Farmington Valley, my Dad had one of his offices in New Britain so we would come over here once in awhile since it was really the only German restaurant in the whole region that we knew in the Hartford area. Strange neighborhood on the east side of Route 72... not dangerous or anything just sort of in the middle of an old working class community. The restaurant is now owned by Polish guy which makes sense in New Britain... honestly not the best German in the world (mostly predictable stuff wursts schnitzel sauerbraten) and increasingly a lot of non German stuff like baked stuffed shrimp, but it's a lot of fun and a good memory of growing up in the area. Glad it's still around since New Britain is pretty dismal nowadays. read more

Barbara and her team knocked it out of the park, our company LOVED the food and it couldn't have been easier to pick up. Fun and unique experience. The food was good, but it was really for the space and staff. We went for my fiancés birthday and it was a great way to celebrate. The beer glasses were HUGE and so were the flight portions. There is a call and answer the staff does when they bring them out. I liked the beer they offered in the flight. My fiancé also got the paddle of shots which came with a t-shirt and a spanking. Yes...I said a spanking lol. It was pretty funny. One major downfall in my book is the fact that they would not/could not do separate checks. I asked at the beginning because we had such a large group. It was a hassle to break up the check and pay on all the cards and cash. It would be great if they were able to update that system. It looks like big groups are extremely common. Parking is always a problem, they have a very small parking lot and tonight they were blocking one of the sides as the restaurant was unloading soda, bottle of liquor and other items from a car and bringing them into the restaurant. The ambiance was very German and we were pleased that Walter the accordion player was there. My boyfriend had asked for a coke and was told they didn't have any soda, but he told the waitress that we had just seen them unloading it from a car in the parking lot, and she said she would check, she brought back a coke which had been watered down with extra seltzer. We haven't been here in years, but the menu has changed, the prices have gone down but they no longer serve a full dinner, which used to include soup, salad, family style vegetables and starches and dessert. Everything is now ala-cart and they no longer have their barley soup. There were the saltine crackers on the table that were served with a little dish with the horseradish cottage cheese and a bowl of German coleslaw. Enough for each of us to each have a package of crackers topped with the cottage cheese and a few bites of coleslaw. We started with the Bavarian pretzel, which was served with guldens mustard (not the beer cheese it used to come with) It was nothing special, especially for $12. My boyfriend had the turkey dinner, which had two very small slices of turkey about 3 inches long and 2 inches wide, it was served with a spoonful of stuffing, a spoonful of mashed pots with gravy and 3 slices of carrots. I ordered the baked stuffed shrimp which was a special for the night, as I had seen a plate with jager schnitzel at a neighboring table, with a very tiny piece of meat and a few mushrooms. I guess that should have been a sign. I asked if the stuffing was real crabmeat or the "fake" crabmeat and I was told it was real crabmeat.... Well what I got was 4 larger cocktail shrimp, not stuffing shrimp that had a gooey sour type topping, with fake crab meat, and not real crabmeat, then they were dosed in lemon juice, it was served with 2 slices of carrot and a nicely flavored spatzle, which was the best tasting of all the food we were served. The prices have gone down, but so has the food quality and portion sizes which have substantially decreased as well. read more

Very unique 87 y/o, spot for German food where you will also see steins of beer and waitstaff in Lederhosen as well as hear drinking mantras and accordion music. The place is decked out to the nine's and it is a one of a kind experience I came with my GF and we started our dinner off right with one of their many different shots each. I had their apply pie shot and it was definitely a double or tripple shot, but it was so tasty it still went down like water. Apparently they have a shot flight that you get paddled after, so I need to come back to try that lol After our shots we also both got a drink. My GF got one of their margarita's & I got their Octoberfest beer in a 1liter stein. Believe it or not this was actually one of their smaller options, as they also had 2 & 5 liter steins as well. When they came and delivered my drink to me they led everyone in the place in a little chant/cheer, which was very fun. The beer was also delicious and I finished the whole stein...I am always up for a challenge Ok, onto the food...Rather than having your typical bread and butter they have cottage cheese and picked radishes, which were both very tasty! Also, the menu is fairly large! My GF and I split their sausage plate, pretzel, and a stuffed mushroom dish. The dishes were all very large so I got to bring 1/2 of the pretzel home! Our last visit was over a decade ago with the kids and this place is still going strong. Covid really set a lot of businesses back, and East Side Restaurant has reopened with limited hours and menu. As soon as business picks up again, and they can get back to full staff, they will get back to 'business as usual'. Both our visits we sat in the Heidelberg dining room which sports a full wall mural of the name sake city. The room décor includes warm tones of red, deep green and dark wood along with stained glass windows of the same pallet. Tables are set for large parties, and this is definitely the type of place to visit with a group of family and friends. They offer a selection of German beers in either liter or half liter sizes. When a liter beer is delivered, the waiter/ress gives a hearty "ziggy zaggy, ziggy zaggy" to which the room responds "oi, oi, oi!". When you order a half liter, you get a lesser reception: we asked the waitress to whisper it, and she did! It's all in good fun. They have a full bar so no worries if you are not a fan of beer. The sauerbraten was quite tender and the gravy sour indeed. The red cabbage is a bit sweet, bit tart, the carrots sweet and the spaetzle firm. The paprika schnitzel definitely passes muster. You can choose from spaetzle, fries or mashed potato as a side with any entrees. The fries were good while they were hot. We ended the meal with a Black Forest Cake. This is a dense, rich chocolate cake smothered in whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate with cherry filling between the layers. More decadent than sweet, while still soothing that sweet tooth. Upstairs is an outside beer garden and two indoor bars. It's quite the place on a weekend night. German music is pipped in throughout the restaurant and the staff keep it fun. read more

We are very familiar with German food and this restaurant disappointed us. The food was just OK. The service was barely acceptable. We arrived in the afternoon and were seated in an area where they have booths. At the time, there was only another couple there. It was quiet and nice. Our server was friendly and everything went well, at the beginning, as far as the service goes. The food was good but far from what we consider excellent. When we finished our meal we waited for our server to come by for quite some time. He had disappeared. We were not in a hurry and we are very patient but, after having waited a while, we asked another server to please let our server know we needed the check. He said our server had been assigned to another area of the restaurant. He agreed to bring us our check but then left and wouldn't come back. We then waited for someone to come and get our credit card for what we considered to be an unacceptable length of time. We never saw the server who initially helped us, again. Before leaving the restaurant, we noticed that in what seems to be a big dining hall, there were lots of people, there was singing and a very festive environment. Dinner for six tonight at East Side early in the evening. Found two parking spaces and got a great table in the rear of the room without waiting [had reservations]. The room quickly filled up with many hungry and happy patrons ready for the HOY, HOY, HOY chant. As usual, the service was super. We ordered three appetizers: Corn Fritters [the best], Potato Pancakes [the ones you never forget] and the Fried Mozzarella [the least likable but hey it's a German restaurant! I had a half liter [no Hoy Hoy for me tonight] of a Weiss beer [FRANZISKANER-HEFE WEISS] which was just perfect with my meal. My son and I went here for his birthday. The only good things were the turkey rice soup and wings that we had for appetizers. It rapidly went downhill from there. Both of us had different schnitzel--meat for both entrees were tough. We only took 2 or 3 bites due to the GRAVY. I have never had such awful gravy in my life. I cannot describe how awful it was --absolutely zero seasoning and a bitter taste. Then, dessert-son had German Chocolate Cake-took 2 bites and could eat no more. I had apple strudel--smallest strudel I have ever had--apples were not cooked thoroughly and not sweet (they didn't even put a teaspoon of sugar in it)-took one bite than that was that. This is a fun place to have dinner. There is an accordion player who begins with performing some German songs, then goes table to table and asks if you would like to listen to any specific song. I went with my favorite one "falderie faldera". My girl friend went with "Edelweiss". Its definitely fun to have an accordion player sing your favorite song on your table side. I went with a 1 liter das boot. It is fun to see the way your beer comes to you. All the waiters starts singing "tikki tokki tikki tokki hoy hoy hoy". And the whole restaurant celebrates your beer. By the way, if you order das boot, you are actually buying the boot. 1 liter boot cost $30. You can take it and bring it back next time when you return (if you want to continue drinking in das boot). 1 liter beer in das boot cost $15. So in total it cost me $45. Food is 30+ dollars, but it is for an entree, a side and a dessert. If you have the stomach to eat everything, it may be ok. Otherwise it is expensive. Potato pancake was very nice. Apple Strudel for dessert was nice too. Sauerbraten and jager schnitzel were our entrees. I like both. I should have taken their spatzle. Spatzel is german version of pasta. One of my favorite places to grab a meal in New Britain. The servers and owners are always very friendly and the food is hearty and tasty. I usually order the sauerbraten with the awesome potato pancakes. They also have an extensive desert menu. The East Side isn't just a restaurant though, it's an experience. I love the large old building, the Alpine decor, the giant mugs of beers, the beer songs and the oompa music. It's hard not be happy at the East Side. On the day of the day of The USA vs. Bayern Munich international friendly Soccer Match last Fall 2023. I was asked to arranged a pre game festival at the East Side. Perfect site and then travel to Rentschler Field. The owners accommodate every wish. Great parking. The Festive Heidelberg room filled with soccer fans. Barbara was a gem handling the menu selections and opened early just to take care of us, Thanks. Nick was on hand to help us get in the spirit with multiple German cold draft beer chants and songs.
