I had been walking and desperately needed a cold drink to cool down since it's was such a beautiful Easter Sunday. The server greeted me with a welcoming smile amd warm hello. They have a ton of vegan options to consider. I tried the Vegan Veggie Bagel. A bagel sandwich filled with hummus on both sides of an everything bagel and topped with tomato, onions, cucumber, & sesame seeds. Additionally, I tried a plain vegan bagel that was delicious. I did the byob with an everything bagel + cream cheese. The bagel to spread ratio was perfect and I enjoyed the toastiness of the bagel. My boyfriend got the best damn bagel and he says it's the best damn bagel he's ever had! The egg was fluffy and the overall sandwich was not dry. Good amount of toppings. Ube banana matcha, sounded incredible...3 things I really like. It was actually matcha with banana syrup and a ube whipped topping. The drink was way more bitter than I'd like or even expected. Although I would have preferred a real banana over syrup (especially since I ordered it blended instead of over ice), with the syrup, it should have balanced out the match flavor. I went to this East Village cafe on a quiet morning--no line, barely any customers--and still ended up waiting over 30 minutes for a single bagel. That would be annoying enough, but it gets worse. I ordered from the menu posted clearly at the counter (apparently an old one), and no one told me it was outdated until I brought it up when paying. Instead of apologizing or honoring the price listed, they made me pay extra--on an already overpriced bagel. Not a great way to treat customers. Poor communication, slow service, and zero accountability. With so many better cafes around, I won't be back. read more

I ordered the turkey pesto bagel and I thought it was good, just a little salty for my liking. I also got a drip coffee to complete my breakfast and that I enjoyed. They did offer an array of sandwiches on their menu which sounded good and I think this is a good spot for a slower morning. With the seating and views would be nice to drink a coffee here. The store was nice inside with a lot of natural light. Sadly, the service was very slow and they forgot the drinks in our order that we had to remind them about. Stopped in for something small during my lunch break. I was specifically looking for a smoothie which is why I chose this place. The storefront is tiny and it's easy to miss if you aren't looking for it. But stepping in, it's quite cozy and quaint, and a very neighborly vibe. I love small businesses like this. I can only assume it was the owner behind the counter and who greeted me because he also said he makes the banana bread and scones in house. Very chill and friendly - my type of vibe. I went for the matcha banana smoothie and opted for the vegan banana bread. The bread was retrieved right away and the smoothie made from scratch. I glanced through the artwork decorating the walls as I waited for the smoothie. I love that they have film photos. Film is so underrated. I glanced through the books and they had a John Grisham book! The matcha banana smoothie and banana bread are both very flavorful and a really good balance of flavors. Nothing too sweet. It kind of matches the whole vibe - authentic, nothing too extravagant, very down to earth. The only downside to the DTLB area (in general and not a fault of this establishment at all) is the high concentration of transient individuals and disrespectful men. I've been harassed several times in DTLB so I'm not very keen on traveling around the area by foot. But being able to visit this cafe was worth taking the risk. You definitely feel safe inside. I would like to visit East Village Cafe again and give this place my repeated business. read more

We were staying in the area for a few days and this cute, charming cafe was very close to our hotel. They had the kind of breakfast that we wanted; nothing too heavy as we were about to take a walking tour. The self-service kiosk was such a perk for introverted me. It was easy to order our breakfast bagels and our iced espresso drinks. I'll note that I didn't see a box to select "Iced" for our beverages, so I typed in "Iced please" under Special Instructions. Service was prompt, accurate, and friendly. We received our drinks first and then picked our table outside (it was a beautiful, cool Sunday morning). Indoor seating is also available. My drink was an Iced Latin Spiced Mocha Latte and my boyfriend had an Iced Americano. I loved my mocha, though I may order it at half-powder/sweetness next time. My boyfriend and I traded half our breakfast bagels because I wanted both the Best Damn Breakfast Bagel and the Smoked Salmon Bagel. This review is in regard to the service here. Don't expect to be addressed or welcomed when you step into this establishment. Most of the staff behind the counter will ignore you and pretend you aren't present in hopes of you leaving so they don't have to actually work. The last time I visited I told myself not to come back here because of the terrible service. Unfortunately, I went back today and of course the blonde long haired worker stood behind the counter with his head down deeply concentrating on his phone as I stood there for 5 minutes being ignored. This place is a hidden gem for unique coffee, breakfast items, smoothies, and sandwiches. Speaking of food! I had the veggie breakfast burrito and the mean green machine smoothie. I preferred the green protein smoothie over the burrito, but both were filling. For the burrito would have desired black beans instead of brown beans--it made the texture too chewy. I used to come to East Village Cafe regularly when I lived just a couple of blocks away. The coffee used to be really good--definitely on the pricey side, but I understood that's part of the downtown Long Beach location. One thing I recently noticed is they charge a 35¢ fee for card payments. I've always paid cash, so I hadn't realized it before, but when your order is already over $5, that extra charge feels unnecessary. Customer service here has never been a strong point, which is part of why I stopped coming regularly. I still pop in occasionally for convenience, but the service hasn't really improved, and it feels like they don't pay much attention to customer experience. I also had a strange experience with their green mango tea once. It came out looking almost like plain water and tasted mostly like mango syrup--not really like tea at all. I ended up ordering something else because it just didn't feel right. Overall, the coffee isn't bad, but with the extra card fee, inconsistent drinks, and underwhelming service, it feels like it's not quite worth the price anymore. read more

Below average cafe - We came here during the Long Beach Ube festival since they were promoting an Ube Latte. The latte should have consisted of Ube Banana Milk Espresso The drink was $10, had NO UBE at all and was genuinely the worse coffee I have ever had. It tasted very watered down and was just banana milk with a hint of espresso. The customer service was also terrible and overall it is not worth your time or money. Love love LOVE! I've tried their iced lattes and chai tea lattes, both phenomenal. I also tried the "awesome bagel" and "best damn bagel." They make house-made vegan banana bread and have an impressive amount of (seemingly rotating) specials. Come for the coffee and bagels and stay for the fun local cafe vibe. Dexter is very kind and cool and makes the banana bread himself. It is clear that the staff here take ownership and pride in their jobs and really enjoy serving the local community of Long Beach. Mind you this cost me $8 for a frappe they pour from a machine and add ice to. The guy clearly looked at it and could tell something was wrong and just proceeded to give it to me. I got home and the bagel was not toasted at all like it said on the grub hub description . I had to scrape off the cream cheese and throw it in the air fryer. For $17 bucks with tip I expected better than this. I should have said something at the counter about the coffee but I thought maybe I was just visually wrong. Rock in food Ordered a burrito on Sunday morning. My first bite was good but on the second I just about broke my tooth. I thought it was a chicken bone or something so I rinsed it off. A dime sized rock made its way into my burrito. They tried telling me it was a potato, I used it to carve into their wood counter to illustrate my point. They still blamed the potato company. They offered me a refund and a free burrito. Declined the offer. I emailed the city's Health department with the details and a picture. To the Owner, I would install a camera in the kitchen and or keep the one with pink hair/ Asian decent out of the kitchen.
