If you're looking for a great meal, you should come eat here. East Wind Drive-In is an amazing place to eat out. My family and I are from Iowa and were in Portland a few weeks ago. We saw this spot on the way home from some sightseeing and decided to go try it out. Our expectations were blown out the window. The staff were all friendly and our food came fairly quick. The burgers were amazing, even to the point of the staff toasting the buns. Everything from the fries to the ice-cream was delicious. If we lived in Portland, my family and I would for sure come here more often. read more

Flavor burst!!!! Seriously it's amazing!! You must try! I have been wanting to try this place since I heard about their super tall soft serve cones. Seriously the photos I saw had been haunting me for months. So when finally had a chance to be slightly close to the drive in I made my husband take a detour. And so happy I did!!! It was by no means an ice cream, kind of day. But the line never went down. And everyone was getting cones! Most were getting smalls, only saw one medium! They have a drive thru and a walk up window, with a tiny parking lot. The staff works quickly and efficiently. And they were super friendly. The cones come out quickly which helps keep the line moving. The food on the other hand takes awhile to get to you. I didn't mind so much since I was perfectly content devouring my strawberry flavor burst while I waited. The food itself was nothing super amazing. It was good and hot, so hubby was happy with our detour. I'm just super happy I finally got to try a flavor burst and hopefully it will not be my last!!! read more

I would give this place 3.5-4 stars. It's a small shop that most people stop at to get a quick bite, and the biggest appeal here is obviously the soft-serve ice cream cones. I tried the BLT on texas toast ($4.75) and thought it was pretty good, the bacon was more thick than crispy. The service was fast, and there are a few stools inside at the countertop to sit down and eat at. Most people order from the window outside. read more

This is our family favorite for treats when driving in the gorge! We particularly love the shakes (make mine a blueberry malt please!). But when we were younger, we especially were amazed at how tall they make the ice cream cones! The curly fries are great too! read more

Decent burgers, gluttonously-proportioned ice cream cones, terrible service, and limited seating. There were three different teenagers working here who were neither fast nor friendly. The food was fine, especially the onion rings, but the only place we could eat was outside in the ridiculous wind. I won't go out of my way to stop here again. It's nothing special. read more

I've been going to this place since I was a kid. Burger, curly fries, milk shake. I don't care how many calories it is -- it's a splurge and it's good. I know some people love their ice cream cones. Yes, I've had my share but I'm not a big ice cream person (put it in my shake with chocolate, please). Maybe it's the tradition or the mythology but there is something about those burgers. The not-so-secret sauce. You have to get a shake to go with it. And then the curly fries balance everything out. That's what I tell myself. I don't get to Cascade Locks much anymore but you better believe that first thing I do is pull into the drive-in and get this holy trinity. For faster service, call ahead. We used to have them on speed dial (back in the day), no joke. Be patient. Good food takes time. read more

After a picnic along the River, we decided ice cream sounded like a good idea. Last time we went here was about 4 months ago. We always get the cappuccino or mocha in a waffle cone. The portions are usually way too big for one person. So, we decided to share a cone and we're surprised at how much the portions shrunk! It's $5.95 for a "specialty flavor" in a waffle cone which only comes in one size. I guess they determine how much the "one size" is. I think this time we got an extra small....not enough to share. Next time we pass through, we will drive on by and stop at the store for a pint of Ben & Jerry's and a box of waffle cones for less than $5.95. Now that's a real treat!! read more

Didn't try the soft serve, not sure what would make soft serve ice cream from here so great. Will need to try it some time. Burger was average to good, line as long. Too long just passing through trying to grab a quick bite. The service was annoying. They all seemed to be running around with their heads cut off and the attitude was like the customers where in their way. read more

My husband and I are on a little road trip and saw this place and the colorful cones from our childhood. The ice cream cone is worth stopping for and the crispy q fries. A perfect day on the river includes a bacon cheese burger and an ice cream cone from these guys. Its literally right next to a very well kept park which has picnic tables (covered and uncovered) and an amazing view of the river. I get the small chocolate & vanilla swirl cone which I would consider a large anywhere else. A large icecream cone is really like an icecream tower of pisa and a challenge to keep from dripping down your arm. They have tons of flavor add ons to the icecream such as strawberry or blue goo. Floats, milkshakes, they got them! They have coffee and breakfast stuff as well. They have a big menu with lots of options. They do accept credit cards but I would recommend bringing cash. Stopped in here after a long and hot hike at Punch Bowl Falls.. and there was a HUGE line outside. But, little tip, if you go inside, there's most likely no line. But still a wait. My friends and I stood there for awhile, un-helped, un-greeted as well. But I get it, they're busy. Just cause you go inside doesn't mean you get to cheat the line either. After a little while, someone comes and takes our order. I ordered a milkshake, and my friends order a milkshake and an ice cream cone. It may take awhile for us to get our orders in, but it sure didn't take them long at all to get our orders out. First comes out our milkshakes which were great, I mean you can't really screw up a milkshake.. Then... a large ice cream cone comes out. And I mean large. I wish I had a picture of it. So the cones come in three sizes: small, medium and large. And the large, is HUGE. I want to say just the ice cream part is at LEAST a foot long! Not including the cone mind you. You really get a bang for your buck here! read more

The ice cream is great! I would definitely recommend going through the drive thru to grab some! The staff is super nice, but who I assume is the owner (older asian man) was very abrupt and rude when asking about ketchup automatically barking that it was in the bottom of the bag. I then went inside to look for my dad who was using the restroom and he then looked at me like I shouldn't be inside the restaurant. I had just bought food from him and was waiting for my father. You think he could've been a little nicer. Anyways to avoid weird interaction I recommend going through the drive thru. The burgers were very mediocre and fries were ok. read more

Strange fame/movie hype due to Wild, but this is really just a drive through diner. So, it's good, but not amazing. As a kid I got lots of things; recently my kid and I got a chicken burger and onion rings. Worth going, certainly, but nothing to write a screaming yelp review about one way or the other. read more

Once upon a time I would have given this quaint & iconic place 5 stars, even with insanely long lines that take for - freaking-ever, but once in August & once in September, their Flavorburst machine was broken. (Never fixed) After waiting 30-45 minutes in line just for (albeit amazing) soft serve only to discover it's unavailable is so disappointing. Would it kill them to post a sign that can be read from farther away than 3 feet from only ONE of three places to order??!! read more

I love this place. As far as I know, not much has changed about it in the last 20 years, and that's fine with me. The food is predictably good, the ice cream portions are intimidating, and the service is always fast, but never bad. It's a great place to stop on a day out exploring the gorge. read more

I have been coming here from when I was a kid. My girls played tournament sports and we would stop on our way back from a tournament with the whole team. They loved it and so do we. My wife asked for mothers day to go and get an ice cream cone from your drive in and I was more than happy to make that happen. Keep doing what you do, it is so good!!! read more

I've heard of this elusive ice cream store in Cascade Locks before, but finally the stars aligned so we could finally meet face to face. And I'll tell you what, it didn't disappoint. Here's the thing not to expect: anything spectacular. It's good ole fashioned ice cream and shakes that are reasonably priced for a tourist stop. They have deep fried foods and lattes too. It's a tourist stop, but its great for kids and families and I'm glad it was there! Seriously friendly service too - and fast. Although there's pretty much a consistent line, they won't keep you waiting long. I had a Strawberry Milkshake that had real fruit in it and was creamy and awesome. My kids tried the ice cream cones and loved 'em. If I'm in the area again and don't mind waiting in line, I'll definitely stop in. read more

My wife 8 month old and wife were driving through cascade locks and decided to grab a burger, we were told to wait in the small parking lot for our food, we did so, my 8 month old started whining and needed to be breast fed so my wife was doing so as the owner rudely came out and said "you need to leave you've been here to long". Amazing and right off of the highway! You have to try the ice cream, I got it with a cappuccino flavor mixed in and it was to die for! They told me my wait for food would be 30 mins, but I don't think I waited longer than 15, and the food was top notch! I got a delicious chicken sandwich and tator tots. Awesome shakes; I like a blackberry shake that actually has blackberry seeds (occasionally) in it. The only drawback is the slow line, exacerbated by the method of waiting on customers. The person taking your order is often the person who makes your ice cream or shake, despite 5 other people in the kitchen. Regardless, we stop every time we're in the gorge. This is my favorite place!! My family has been coming here for years after we go hiking for the day. Their ice cream cones are HUGE and delicious! The last time I went here, one lady who was working told us her favorite was a root beer and marshmallow shake. We thought it sounded weird but ordered it and it was THE BEST shake I've ever had. The Good: It's a cute dingy spot by the road, just like a drive-in should be. Expect cones piled high with scrumptious soft serve and other typical fast food. They gave my companion free ice cream in line which was a wonderful surprise! We didn't run into a long line when we were there, but the staff was efficient nonetheless. The Bad: Their ice cream will melt all over your hands, face, and possibly your clothes. This will happen regardless of how fast you try and eat it, so don't give yourself a brain freeze for nothing and grab a handful of napkins on your way out instead. Don't Forget: To grab a freshly caught salmon from the natives in the parking lot! Best fish I've ever had. If you're in the Gorge, you owe it to yourself to come by. read more
