Okay soooo...I totally understand why Mr Bao ends up with some pretty average reviews. This is not a place where I would tell you to walk in blind, point at the menu, and expect magic. Some things are definitely better than others. BUT - after going a few times, I really think this place is a case of learning the menu and playing to its strengths. Once you know whats worth it and whats just ok, you can put together a genuinely great meal here. This time around, the star of the show was the Chef's Choice jiaozi which gives you one of each dumpling they offer. That was a GREAT move. They were colorful, satisfying, and even better with a side of the spicy chili sauce which I highly recommend adding. I also want to give credit where it's due: the soup dumplings here are delicious, and I have also really enjoyed the fried rice and the spicy noodle dishes on past visits. So yeah, I get the mixed reputation....But I think Mr Bao is one of those spots that rewards a little menu knowledge. Bar Fried Rice with shrimp, steamed pork soup dumplings and create your own rice bowl. Her rice bowl had the following : jasmine rice, 48-hour braised Galbi beef, and garlic cucumber salad. The total was $40.00 with the added fees. Upon arrival, everything was sealed tight and there was no spillage. They included forks and knives, but no condiments. The soup dumplings were fairly decent, but the flavors weren't distinct. Now, my fried rice took me off guard, it was better than I expected for a late-night meal. The only thing I would have changed is no egg. My co-worker said she thoroughly enjoyed her rice bowl. Mr.Bao was a late night eat after heading home from the Barclay Center. It closes at 11pm despite the time stated in Yelp. Even when we came in around 10, the owner greeted us so kindly and happily. The dumplings are the flagship for a reason. I have never been able to settle on a favorite so I always order their sampler. That said, the classic pork soup dumpling is pretty good. Tried their general tso's chicken and it's fine. I don't recommend it, but only because the flavor and quality is in line with most hole-in-the-wall takeout places (which are good!) but the price is much higher. If you were looking to splurge on a more carefully made version of a Chinese-American classic, look elsewhere. I will probably try at least one more of their non-dumpling items out of curiosity, but for now I can only recommend the soup dumplings - they're good in any style. read more

My least favorite was the wrap, I felt that it was pretty "small" in size from what I'm usually used to! Cost: cost want too bad, in total everything was roughly less than $50! I wish there was sauce for the popcorn chicken (I was expecting some sort of aioli sauce, or sweet chili sauce, or even spicy mayo would be delish) but it is good on its own as well. I was in the area and was deciding on something to eat for lunch before I stumbled on this restaurant. I was craving some popcorn chicken and decided to also get a spicy sesame dandan noodles to compliment it. I'm glad I did because I really enjoyed the noodles. I've made something similar at home and wanted to see what this dish should actually taste like, and it was delicious! It was very saucy, with the sesame sauce at the bottom and the meat/chili oil at the top of the bowl - mix well before eating! It was very fragrant and had a good amount of spice, not too much to the point where it's painful. The popcorn chicken, however, was mediocre. I was hoping for some big, juicy pieces, but found that they were small pieces and were a little too salty and dry for my taste. The ultimate modified dumpling for the western consumer. It pains me to think that someone will have their first soup dumpling experience here. A Taiwanese culinary masterpiece in McDonald's form, maybe even some of the ingredients as well. Ouch. Anyway, the first thing you immediately notice is the size of the dumpling. Call it shrinkation or what have you, they are smaller than what you would expect at an authentic place. I would have been a bit more lenient if only the skin of the dumpling was thinner, but it is not. Thick as it is, I can not say that there is a balance between dough, meat, and soup. Having the dough so think impacts the real estate inside in a way that leaves little or no room for the soup. One order, which includes 6 pork soup dumplings, will run you $9.95. Compared to an average restaurant (Shanghai Cafe) in Chinatown, you would get 8 dumplings for $6.95, and don't forget they are larger in size. Also, I don't know if they are saving money or just don't know, but from my experience, fresh ginger is essential in the dipping sauce, something I did not see here. Regular pork and chive dumpling, you know, the famous street food item that usually runs $1 to $3 is actually $9 here. Look, I understand that prices are heavily affected by rent but listing all of the reasons above, I can't see the justification to operate and charge in such a way. My one order of pork soup dumpling, cucumber salad, pork and chive dumpling, and 1 ginger ale cost me $33 and still left me hungry. If you want a good dumpling experience than drive another 10min to Kai Feng Fu Dumpling House at 8th Ave and 48th Street in Brooklyn where an order of dumplings, hot and sour soup, a scallion pancake and a drink with cost you exactly $8 and will not disappoint in anyway. A very family oriented neighborhood and this tiny dumpling location was definitely deceiving to the eyes at first - but in a good way. This place has a spacious seating in the first hall dining area near the counters and kitchen. We came here on a nice day and decided to go further back for their outdoor backyard area. This place is a nice quick pit stop if you want some very flavorful dumplings and need to head out for business in the neighborhood. There are some dim sum dumpling items still ready late afternoon, total win for me. But my favorites has to go to the steamed buns - the fluffy ones and the taco shaped ones. No need to make the long visit to Momofuku for those pork belly buns because this place can hold it's own. The containers used for serving are in plastic if you're in a hurry - at least that's when I came. A reliable choice for dumplings if you need to get your fried and fluffy appetizer fix. Delivery review! Great flavorful and filling meal but a couple misses Four of us ate together in total. We each ordered a bowl and then some dishes to share in the middle. It came out to just over 100 after fees and tax and tip. There was so much food and it was so tasty that it was well worth the cost! I got the braised pork bowl and it was super flavorful and well seasoned. The lean parts were a little dry but the fatty parts made up for it. The baos had a lot of stuffing and came with enough for everyone in our party to have 2 of each. The fried chicken had a great flavor but they kept the container closed so the trapped steam lost a lot of the crunchiness. My other qualm was with the wildrice. I know its inherently got a weird texture but I was hoping they would finesse it so itd taste better. It felt very dry and almost like leftover rice, had to mix soy sauce with it to be palatable. Great spot for non-traditional comfort food! I love getting their rice bowls with salt & pepper shrimp and wood ear mushrooms. It's truly a complete meal. Their rock shrimp and shrimp dumplings are also great! The only downside is that I wish they had some sort of sauce to go with their rice bowls otherwise with the salt & pepper shrimp it gets to be a slightly dry meal. Mr. Bao took my soup dumpling virginity. So let's get into it shall we? This was a delivery order so unfortunately I did not remember to take a pic before I started eating, I do have a few leftover dumplings though so maybe I'll update this later. I've been wanting to try soup dumplings for quite some time now, it just so happens that I am very much a homebody and rarely go out anymore. I've been discovering a lot of new places on Ubereats. Sometimes, you have to manually search for something on the app for ALL of the possible options to actually show up and last night when I searched up Dan Dan noodles, this place popped up. With a deal I might add, "Spend $20, Save 10." I'd never seen it before yesterday and it never came up when I had searched the 'Latest Deals' section so I was pretty excited. They had Dan Dan noodles on the menu so I got them obviously and an order of pork and crab soup dumplings. I did search through this Yelp page before placing the order, the noodles looked pretty good. Lots of reviews said the dumplings were great so I had high hopes. Like I said before, this was my first time having soup dumplings so I don't have anything to compare it to. HOWEVER, the broth in the dumplings was extremely similar to every chicken rice soup broth I've had from countless Chinese takeout spots. If that's what it's supposed to taste like, then they did what needed to be done. But if I'm being completely honest, I felt that the flavor was extremely tame and basic. The filling also looked like mostly pork. Blue crab has a distinct flavor, I could not place it at all. Idk what I was expecting but I feel like I just wanted more flavor all around. The Dan Dan noodles needed better and more thoughtful packaging, kind of like ramen. I did not eat them right away and had to heat them up in the microwave. They put the noodles and the meat sauce in the same container so I had to heat it up that way. It was either my microwave that overcooked them or the restaurant but either way, they were a little too mushy for me. I like a little bite and bounce to my noodles. The ground pork had a really nice flavor to it though, I just probably wouldn't order again because I prefer Dan Dan ramen. Mr. bao offers a good amount of variety: all the different style dumplings, including steamed, boiled, and pan-fried, pockets, rice bowls, veggies, and of course baos. I really wanted to try this place and love it, but I thought it was just fine. We tried the pork baos, pork and chive pan fried dumplings, pork soup dumplings (yes, I love my pig but also when evaluating dumplings you need to compare the basics, am I right??). For good measure, we also had boiled beef and onions dumplings, a side of string beans, and the braised beef rice bowl. The good: the packaging is way cute and relatively environmentally friendly. Mr. Bao is big on presentation and organization and there is no question which dish is which-- helpful when people want to try a little bit of everything, like us. The soft seasoned egg that came with the braised beef was delicious. The bad: well, nothing was bad but I wasn't a fan of the beef and onion dumplings. Braised beef was a tad on the dry side, and I think the overall dish needed something to tie all of the components together. Soup dumplings had nice flavor, but as with most soup dumpling take-out, the texture of the skin too hard on top and too soft on the bottom. This is not the restaurant's fault, some foods are best eaten onsite. Baos were cute and decent, but nothing special. The pan fried dumplings had good meat-to-wrapper ratio and were fried delicately. I am a little disappointed that I loved the packaging more than the food, but if you're craving dumplings mr. Bao should suffice. read more
