I was caught off guard when my friend walked up the stairs to the house because from initial appearance, I wouldn't have thought this was the restaurant! Upon walking in, the host greeted us and told us his name was Dan and that he was the owner of the restaurant! It was really cool to see that the owner is truly passionate about his restaurant and will show up to put in the work, even during the later hours. In terms of the food, I went with the Hungry Hokie which was a mashed potato bowl with with bits of meatloaf and chicken, green beans, macaroni and cheese. It also came with a biscuit or cornbread, I opted in with the cornbread. The food was absolutely hearty and had pretty good flavor! The one wish that I had was that it came in a bigger portion as it didn't fully fill me up. If I was in town again, I'd definitely consider going back to try the other items on the menu!

I started with the orzo tomato spinach soup with feta ($3.99). I wasn't sure what to expect as I get a pasta salad done similarly but I can tell you that I was highly impressed with the tomato based broth, the depth of the broth, creamy consistency of the orzo and pieces of fresh spinach. A side of crumbled feta accompanied it to toss in - and it definitely added to the flavors!!! I originally came here for the fried catfish - and it did not disappoint! Two pieces of fish, two sides (collards and broccoli cheese) and hushpuppies was $16.99. I had originally gotten the squash but I'm not a fan of breaded and fried. My server was gracious and let me swap it out. My service was quick, my server was the absolute sweetest and I'm already trying to figure out my next visit!

Proper is just that, a quaint and popular restaurant that features the chef's special select menu each day which means reservations are highly suggested. We were lucky enough to arrive right before peak dinner time and was able to score a spot to the front overlooking the chefs garden where ingredients are home grown. We started with their carrot and apple soup with coconut milk base. I know this is tmi but I'd be satisfied swimming in a pool of that delicious soup. Fresh, fresh and fresh. I decided on the baked catfish with olives, tomatoes and thyme together with green beans potato casserole and side salad while my partner enjoyed fried chicken breast with potatoes and gravy, steamed cabbage and cornbread. Very few can take a boneless fried chicken to taste like it's still on the bone. Excellently done. We then savored on their recommended dessert chocolate chip bread pudding with homemade ice cream. If you're in the neighborhood give this quaint little house a try you won't be disappointed.

Not many dining choices in this area. Ample parking and a large dining area with tables efficiently serviced so that they turn over quickly. Our wait for a table was only 10-minutes, following a group of 18! The service was the star of the experience. Very efficient, helpful, attentive servers. Shout out to Suzanna. The large staff worked well together and seemed to make everyone feel comfortable. The ambience is southern, hometown casual. You feel like you are visiting your large family from start to finish. Nothing pretentious. Clean enough. Comfortable. Pricing....in this time of food inflation, this restaurant still offers amazing prices. My husband and I had two large dinner entrees with water and our bill came to just under $24.00. Our portions were generous as evidence in the photo. Our waitress recommended the grilled pork chops which were hot, juicy and seasoned just right. They came with two veggie sides from a long list of choices. I chose collard greens and Mac and cheese. These items were just average and only luke warm as was the biscuit (from a choice of about 5 bread options). Had the sides been hot and a little more flavorful, I would have given 5 stars. For vegetarians and all-day breakfast eaters, Cooper Pot is your place; so much to choose from on their menu. Vegans might struggle as most southern cooking includes dairy and it looks as if they cook their sides in large quantities and keep them in a warmer to serve. The ability to respond quickly to large numbers of travelers and locals, with solid, well-priced, filling meals is the gift of the Copper Pot. We will return when traveling their way.

I ordered an extra side of dressing for both my sandwich and the chips. I just cannot rave enough about how amazing my entire meal was! Those chips were PERFECT!!!! It was very cold where we were sitting and the server allowed us to move to a warmer spot. We ordered a fried mushroom appetizer. This was very good. They came with ranch and I think it was the horseradish sauce. The orangish sauce was very good. I ordered 1/2 rack of dry ribs with mac & cheese and green beans, and 2 hushpuppies. You get a choice of Texas toast, hushpuppies, or rolls. My coworker ordered salmon. When the food came out, my ribs were wet. I told the server that I had ordered dry rub. He stated they were dry but had sauce on them. I'm sorry, that is not a "dry rib", in my opinion. The first piece of rib meat I ate was soft and juicy. The next two were super dry and I could not eat any more of them. My coworker joked that that was probably what they were referring to when they said "dry rub". The green beans were ok. I added a ton of pepper and some hot sauce. I saved the mac & cheese for lunch the next day. The hushpuppies were dense and needed a little more flavor. My coworker commented that her salmon was ok but nothing to write home about. I should have went with my first instinct and ordered from the kids menu. The prices are very reasonable and the atmosphere is nice.

From the perfectly seasoned fried fish to the smoky, flavorful jerk pulled chicken, every bite tasted like it was made with pride. And then came the surprise star of the meal--the hush puppies. His passion for cooking is contagious. As he shared the story behind his recipes, his cooking process, and his vision of serving both his community and the world, it became clear that this is more than a restaurant--it's a story of second chances, reinvention, and purpose served on a plate. Pretty much everywhere we have tried in the SWV area is mediocre at best. Finding good properly slow smoked brisket, ribs and pulled pork is getting harder and harder to find, or at a decent price. Well, you can stop looking if you're near the area and stop into Bluegrass! First, the brisket is fantastic. Not overly fatty, well smoked, grainy and very tasty. I had it with a dollop of the Bourbon Sauce and Traditional BBQ sauce. Absolutely near perfect. Next up are the Ribs. These dry rubbed smoked baby back cut style are meat falling off the bone delicious. Again, I drizzled just a small bit of Bourbon & Traditional Sauce on them which enhanced a nice sweetness. Next up we tried the Pulled Pork with a bit of vinegar and molasses which was succulent with a great taste through and through. For sides we had the beans, Mac n cheese, sweet potato casserole & hush puppies with butter. As I said, by far the best we have had in over a 100 mile radius. This is authentic slow smoked meats, dry rubbed, not drenched in sugary sauce. You control any flavor of sauce you want at the table with several great selections. The Bourbon and Traditional were my favorites. Because of the rarity finding honest and authentic smoked bbq like this, I wish I could give more than 5 stars, as it's the closest to Texas Slow Cooked you will find in the Southern Virginia / West Virginia area. Lucky for us it's not far, as we will be coming back to enjoy this wonderful family geared place, with amazing service tucked away in sleepy ol' Pembroke VA.
