I went in last week with my family. I had already been dying to try this place for awhile. My dad came down from New Jersey and I knew they had vegan options. I had also been eyeballing the Cuban style sandwich. Well I wasn't disappointed. It was almost as good as the ones from my childhood in Tampa. The soup of the day was great. We arrived at eat cetera late on a murky Saturday afternoon, for an early dinner. We had the place to ourselves for quite awhile. The atmosphere was very peaceful, with simple and spare decor, with pleasing background music from diverse cultures. (They offer a variety of music CDs for sale as well and will play any you request.) The proprietor was our server and was helpful in describing menu choices, which are the same for lunch and dinner. I settled in with a glass of quite good Cabernet from the short but adequate wine list. My friend enjoyed ice tea. They have an interesting selection of beers as well. We were brough a sample of flavorful blue cheese cream spread with crostini. The crostini were tenderly perfect, toasty on the outside and soft inside. We both started with soup because the day's selections sounded so delicious. My sweet corn soup with chipotle sauce was creamy and just spicy enough for me, with an intriguing smokiness. It was as good as any I've had (and I am a fan of anything with corn). My companion tried the "gypsy" soup, which was a multitude of vegetables and garbanzo beans in a tomato broth, also with a smoky flavor. He reported it to be on the spicy side which was to his liking. Both were delicious and perfect for a cool, wet evening. For my meal I chose the smoked chicken breast salad, with roasted red pepper, olives, tomato, and thin-thin cucumber slices, on tender greens, with a sun-dried tomato vinaigrette dressing. It was such a beautiful presentation that I hesitated to disarrange it! It was as tasty as it was attractive. Accompaniment was the perfect crostini, this time with a sun-dried tomato spread. Salad was just the right size, not one of those huge concoctions with enough lettuce for a family of four. My friend ordered a sandwich special, Boursin cheese with grilled zucchini, grape tomatoes, baby spinach and Black Angus roast beef on a toasted Cuban roll. The creamy cheese gave a gentle garlic flavor to the delicious combination of meat and veggies. He proclaimed it to be excellent. We had to experience dessert, and they just happened to have a special of warm apple tart with organic vanilla ice cream. It was not too sweet (the ice cream provided that!) and had a very tender crust and delicate apple flavor. It went well with the French-press decaf. It is so satisfying to have coffee freshly prepared at the table. This dinner was a pleasing evening out. The atmosphere was relaxing and friendly and the place is understatedly elegant, though casual. The health-conscious menu items provide a dining alternative for vegetarians as well, as most of the offerings can be served without meat. This is such a gem in Galveston. I found it thanks to Yelp! The service is nice and I love the minimal contemporary decor. They also have a modest but nice variety of beers, wines and beverages. The melon gazpacho was great as was the bean soup. My goat cheese panini was a bit underwhelming though as it was just a lot of unbalanced tartness. I wish they'd put more veggies in their paninis to give it some more depth and heft in flavors. The desserts were ok but not worth the price. Everything my hubby got was really good though. His sandwich and soup were excellent. Definitely worth a visit again if we are in Galveston. I have to admit, I have been stalking this restaurant. Yes that sounds like a very difficult thing to do, and no it does not include loitering. After checking out Yelp reviews for places around the island, Eat Cetera made the list of "10 places to try." So I've been checking their website for daily specials. They actually update it daily, amazing I know, so you can find out ahead of time if there's a tasty soup being simmered in the kitchen, the special panini of the day, etc. Well today I was finally able to cross this place off of my list. But don't worry, it's now taking residence on the "places to go to all the time because it's delish" list. The Thai Pumpkin Coconut soup was the perfect thing on this chilly fall day. The salad was equally as delightful. At first the dressing looked too thick to be poured on my Feta/ Red Pepper/ Cucumber / Kalamata Olive ETC salad. But it combined perfectly with all the ingredients on my pate. Who knew you could make a vinaigrette out of sun dried tomatoes? Eat Cetera did. The whole place is very charming, and I'm sure if it had been warmer my friend and I would've sat outside. The staff was great as well, very attentive without being annoying or bothersome, etc. It's located not too far from the Strand, so if you're visiting on a cruise and looking for a fab place to dine.... So I found this place via yelp and decided to try it. Last time. I was here at 2:00 pm, so way past the lunch crowd. Walked in, not greeted, finally found someone who said "sit anywhere". Ok, so sit I did. Just lil' ol' me, by myself. Wait. Wait. Wait. Finally I get up and ask for a menu. Was thrown a menu. Wait. Wait. Wait. Finally got the Prickly Pear Iced Tea. Yum. Um, a refill please? Can't even locate a person to refill. Got up, went to where they have the tea pitchers, refilled myself. THREE TIMES. Not once was I offered a refill, and NOT ONCE did someone even say "Oh I'm sorry, we'll get to you in a sec". There were 3 waitresses here, so it's not like they were short-staffed (tiny place). OK, so the food: Took about 20-25 mins for my salad. Got a salmon salad, pretty good actually. OK, so liked the food. Check was thrown down. Eat Cetera is a great lunch spot off The Strand in Galveston. I'm visiting from Dallas, and after reading the reviews, I ventured in solo. I ordered a cup of one of their daily special soups (hominy & potato) and it was amazing!! Next time, I would get a bowl. For my entree, I ordered the bacon tomato mozzarella panini (based on prior reviews) and it was great! I would never think to add bacon to a mozzarella sandwich, but the flavors went perfect together. The side salad was a great compliment to the meal. My husband and I tried Eat Cetera for the first time only about a month before we moved away from the island. We definitely regretted not trying it sooner (at least at the time the place closed at around 7pm, making it difficult for us to get there for dinner, and we had few opportunities to go for lunch). We liked it so much that we decided to make a repeat visit shortly thereafter for a goodbye lunch with some friends. This place definitely has style. It reminded me of NYC in a good way, being a small, skinny rectangle of a place with a definite concept and a streamlined menu of good and interesting choices. I also really like the art. I thought it was a nice touch that even though the menu basically consists of sandwiches/salads/soups, a small complimentary appetizer of bread and tomato-y spread was offered before our entrees. The sandwiches are really great. I was impressed by the variety of flavor combinations. On my god, the soups! They are so inexpensive and soooo good! Made from scratch every day and the owner will call you if there is a soup you like and she is making it that day. She makes two different soups for each day. The last time I went, I had both and still got outta there with a drink and two soups for under $10.00! I also got a free magazine. I stopped by here for lunch while in Galveston with a friend this past Tuesday, and I am so glad we did! I always check Yelp before venturing out to see where to eat, and again I was not dissapointed. I had the taleggio, slow roasted onions, green apple and arugula paninni with salad, and it was amazing! Taleggio is an Italian soft cheese similar to Brie, and it paired wonderfully with the crisp apple and mellow onion. I started with a cup of the gazpacho, and it was so yummy! Just the right blend of tomato and green pepper and spice. It was very refreshing since it was pretty warm out there! I also had the prickly pear ice tea; in fact I had 3 glasses! Very light and refreshing. We were served costini with a wonderful blue cheese cream as an appetizer. I could eat the blue cheese cream by the spoonful! Amazing! We stopped here for a light lunch, expecting it to be a typical low-key sandwich shop. Much to our surprise, it turned out to be a pretty nice restaurant. The decor is trendy and the food is way above standard deli fare. The complimentary bleu cheese and baguettes are a nice touch and serve as a good indicator that you're about to enjoy an excellent sandwich. And boy, did we! I'm glad the previous reviewer had a good experience. This place is the best!! Its kind of tucked away from other places, but it walking distance from the Strand and Postoffice Street. Every time I go I get the Cuban panini. So delicious! The spicy mustard causes my nose to explode, but its really worth it. With sandwiches and paninis you can get chips or side salad. I've had both and either one is great. The salad is simple but with a light house dressing that is yummy. Also, I would recommend trying the prickly pear iced tea. Another yummy treat here. Another attribute of this cafe is that if you get take out they use environmentally responsible containers. All plastic wear and cups are made from biodegradable corn material. Came down to Galveston, TX for fun and was looking for a place to eat, stumbled upon this place (through yelp of course) and decided to give it a try. I"m not a sandwich person, so I was a bit skeptical. It's located on 25th & market and it's next to a modern art museum, so the restaurant had a lot of modern art in it, so I thought was pretty neat. It's also located close to the port where the cruise ships leave, so it's a great place to stop for lunch. I got to try their chipotle soup w/ sausage, Thai curry coconut pumpkin soup, sun dried tomato spread, the panini cuban style ham & salami sandwich, & their Norwegian salmon w/ cured onions and capers. The food was really good, I really liked the chipotle soup (wish I got a bowl instead of the sandwich), the cuban (they have different mayo for you to choose if you don't want mustard), and the salmon sandwich (I didn't like the capers, but it wasn't my sandwich, so I can't complain). The waitresses were all very nice and attentive. Looking through the previous reviews, I realized that we didn't get the creme brulee cheesecake!!! we even said we were going to try it before we ordered our lunch... oh well, gives us a reason to go back next time we're in Galveston. read more

The Yelp profile says good for kids, but don't believe it unless your kids are over 7 and well-behaved. Our younger kids are better than most their age but we got some nasty looks by other patrons. Then again it was a weekday at lunch hour with lots of business types and otherwise quiet until we showed up. The staff was very nice about it however and went out of their way to make some more kid-friendly nuts-and-bolts sandwiches for them, because most of what was on the menu was a bit sophisticated for little palates. Service was quite good. We were surprised at how small it was on the inside. I'd say it would be an excellent place for a date for the single types. The decor was modern and artsy, and the place was meticulously clean. I had the Norwegian salmon sandwich and my wife had the Thai salad. They were excellent. And the chocolate pyramid was amazing. In anticipation of doing a fatty ridiculous amount of fried seafood eating on our "getaway" trip to Galveston, we decided to start our off with lunch at Eat Cetera as an exercise in moderation. What fools we were. Everything here was incredibly fresh and delicious, and by no means did we feel deprived. The crostini with sun dried tomato spread they give you as a starter reminded me of eating a grilled cheese sandwich with cream of tomato soup, in a comforting way. I ordered a lavender soda which had just a hint of lavender and really came to life once I threw in the lemon slice. The boo got the prickly pear iced tea which had just the right amount of pear flavor. As our entrees, we got one of the special salads which had smoked trout, and this was divine. We also got a panini with taleggio and ham which was pretty darn tasty. Our server was nice and attentive, and the decor in this place is just the right blend of modern and quirky. My wife had a feta cheese salad and a potato soup. Both were very good. Our meals were served with crostini and blue cheese "cream cheese." It was so awesome that I want to make it at home. LOVE THIS PLACE!! The atmosphere is bright and airy, even though the space is relatively small. I ordered a veggie panini and some African Peanut soup. While waiting, my friend and I were served bread that had been lightly toasted in the panini press. I was so happy to learn that my friend doesn't like blue cheese! That meant I got to finish off the blue cheese cream spread that came with the bread. Yum! My peanut soup was extremely thick, and it was delicious. It was sweet and hearty, and it was exactly how I had wanted it to taste. The salad that came with my sandwich didn't have any dressing, but I'm pretty sure if I had asked for it, the owner or the waitress would've happily brought me some. The veggies were so good that I didn't need anything on it. Also, the panini was very good. It had bell peppers, arugula and some sort of cheese. There seemed to be a mix of people in here. There were some doctors from UTMB, some guys in uniform, 2 ladies who seemed to be long time friends, and a couple. The owner and the waitress worked non-stop--serving food and cleaning tables. Stupid me. Being my first time here, I wanted to try everything. We started with a seasonal beer and enjoyed soup as an appetizer. They also gave us a sample plate of blue cheese and crostinis. yum! We each had a sandwich, one ham with chipotle and one bacon mozzarella panini. Both included a side salad of fresh spring greens. yum again! I'm a big Yelp fan, but I have never actually posted about a restaurant until now. We've had a beach house in Galveston since 2005 and eat out all the time here. We've passed Eat Cetera many times but never stopped here. Seems like a nice place from the outside, but seemed a little too unassuming to get me to stop there I saw their ad in an island publication and the picture of the fresh food made me decide to try them. Wow, this place is seriously good. To say it's soup, salad and sandwiches sounds so pedestrian. It's a small, but very clean and modern inside. Our server was very courteous and asked if we'd been there before. When I said no, she happily gave us the rundown of their specials of the day. I had a smoked salmon sandwich that was easily one of the five best sandwiches I have ever eaten. My wife's smoked turkey panini was just as delicious, as were the soup and salads that accompanied the sandwiches. That salad dressing was excellent. I can't wait to go back. There is a reason you are seeing so many four- and five-star ratings of this restaurant. Eat Cetera is delicious. When is the last time you said that about a casual restaurant? I saw one of the other reviewers ranting about being "uncomfortable" because the owner was, in his opinion, unfriendly. Ignore this. I met her and she doesn't seem all that outgoing, but let's face it - she's creating great food and isn't that why we go to restaurants in the first place? Called them at 5:23pm to make sure we could park on the street before we v walked in and we were told by the female that answered the phone that they will be closing "soon" and that they couldn't seat us if we came in. Are you serious? Their business hours state 11-6pm!! If you don't want to let people in at 5:23pm then change your closing hours to reflect that! This is unacceptable. read more

A local took me when I came down from Houston and it was a great choice. Neat space, excellent sandwich and it appears the owner's family all work there. Highly recommended. Having just moved to Houston and never being to Galveston this was a nice place to start. My sandwich was just perfectly flavored with the pickle, too. Gaspacho (sp) was super tasty but too spicy for me. Yes, they contradict. If you like a bit of a bite, you'll love it. The funky art and postcards were nice touches to the overall decor, too. We hit The Strand, without knowing where we were going for lunch. A quick check of Yelp resolved our dilemma. We had to walk about a half mile from where we parked, but I must say it was well worth it! We ordered the Lentil & Sweet Potato soup with avocado salsa, to start. It was AMAZING!! I ended up getting the Thai Beef, Carrots & Daikon Radish sandwich. She got the Sun dried Tomato Spread with Zucchini Ribbons & Baby Swiss sandwich. Both were absolutely great! Mine, more so!! LOL!! I've ate at almost every restaurant on the island. There are many who say they have great food made with quality ingredients but really only about 20% actually deliver. Eatcetera was a pleasant surprise. The place itself was really cool and had a great vibe. Not too stuffy but still had an elegant, sophisticated feel. The service was very good as well. I was taken care of and I didn't feel at all judged even though I most likely reeked of a dank weed smell, seeing that I am celebrating my birthday on the island today. I ordered the Smoked chicken sandwich (vegan option), with kettle chips. My companion ordered the Thai beef sandwich also with kettle chips. Both were so well done. The bread was excellent and the sandwiches were tasty, flavorful, so refreshing considering all the food from restaurants that water it down for the masses. The dining utensils for to go orders are biodegradable, every box of food hand stickered, and the to bag deep and easy to carry. Attention to detail! We were riding around looking for lunch and I went to Yelp really quickly and found a place with 4.5 stars and there were quite a few reviewers. I was so excited that I forgot to read the reviews. We just went right there. Had I read the reviews, I would have seen that the sandwiches here are "New American" and healthy. My partner and our friend were not impressed. They were polite and ate, but they did not like this place. I loved it, but I guess it isn't for everyone. The server suggested the Norwegian Smoked Salmon, Cured Onions & Caper Cream. I ordered that. The others ordered, ummm, something like ham and cheese and a panini. Lol...I had to get past the first bite before I decided whether or not I liked my sandwich. I wasn't expecting the texture of the salmon. As I was chewing it and enjoying the taste, I had a very quiet moan. It was really, really good. So why just three stars? I didn't enjoy the experience at all. It was such a sterile environment. The staff didn't do anything to make you feel welcome. It was almost a "what are you doing here?" feeling. No one smiled and the lead server had such an attitude. It was as if she would rather be served than serving. They sell a very eclectic collection of CDs. I vaguely heard the music in the background. The building is really cute and the decor is something along the lines of modern ikea chic. I'm a fan. It's a little small inside but sometimes that's the best kind of restaurant. The staff was very nice but not very good. I felt like I should have flags to wave them over just to get a water refill. It's not that they were inattentive, they just didn't seem to know what to do. I got the beluga salad which was incredibly underwhelming. The endive was quite bitter, the portion was small for $10, the spiraled carrots were the equivalent to tangled Christmas lights and I felt like I was eating pretentious food for the sake of it being pretentious. What a wonderful find just off the Strand. I'm a lover of a good sandwich and this sounded like a place I had to check out. Free 2 hour parking is everywhere, beware of the lot next door (the menu even warns you not to park there). Small interior so get there off peak if possible, probably sits 20-25 with 3-4 tables outside. I had the Cuban and the fiancée had the goat cheese/kalamata with salami. She actually started with a green Indian coconut soup that was delicious. Her sandwich was savory and perfect for her, good flavor and free substitution on the included veg. The Cuban was pressed and grilled HOT, exactly the way it should be! Warm all the way through with a wonderful Dijon mustard and homemade pickles. A short walk to the Strand for a stroll or ice cream treat is an added bonus. Great service and food make this a don't miss. read more

Finally got a chance to try this place i had bookmarked a while back. I get to galveston fairly regularly and this will certainly be one of my go to places. I had the noodle salad, my husband the smoked chicken salad. These were absolutely great. The interior is trendy, quiet and clean; the wait staff is very friendly. The food is pretty common tasting, nothing to write home about. The salad was sour so we asked for chips instead and the obliged. Sandwiches we had: Cuban, Turkey with Bacon and white cheddar, hot and cheese. The bread is crisp and similar to croutons. The whole meal for my family of 3 cost $30 not including tip and I felt this was not a very good evaluation as we left still hungry. Came during the last day of restaurant week for lunch with some friends so I got to try a three course meal. I started off with a small cup of potato minestrone like soup and they gave us a sun-dried tomato cream cheese spread with bread. The soup was ok, but the spread was really delicious. Wish they gave more of this because this was one of the highlights of the meal. I got a panini with eggplant, mozzarella, grape tomatoes, and basil for my entree (along with a side salad).
